Yea reminds me of So. Cali summer morning, dew still on garden leaves and the sun threatening to rise......... a new day dawning with so much promise. In many ways I was part of a very unlucky generation at the same time a lucky generation. Simple yet ugly times, and the backdrop of some of the most beautiful music ever created.

That ~2014 biopic about Brian Wilson was what first awakened me to the fact that he was a straight-up genius. All those sounds that fade into a perfect, poetic representation of sunshine and waves and sandy beaches didn't just spring from nowhere - but their very brilliance lies in the fact that it's so easy to forget that they're even there.

Its funny because even though this song is a cover, i think of Sloop John B as a Beach Boys song because Brian made the best rendition of it of all time. The arrangement with the 3 harmonizing guitar parts and the vocal harmonies is just amazing.

I really appreciate this video. Rehearsing is a process most people don't know much about. For me, some of the most spiritual moments occur at this time. Yes, the final performance is a great achievement however, the process of getting there is remarkable. Thank you for sharing this.
_May I make a small suggestion? It is something I have noticed more with most films that have come out in the last decade or so. When displaying text which you want people to actually read, give them more time to do so. I recommend extending the time by at least 25%. When there isn't sufficient time - and for some there isn't it becomes a distraction. It robs the film. Your text is well researched and well written - informative. Don't cheat it!_
    Other than that, great video!

Man, drums, bass guitar, upright bass, baritone saxophone, glockenspiel, piano, three 12 string guitars and three flutes! You'd almost think by that time Phil Spector would start thinking "overproduced". For all the years I've listened to this, I never realized how much is in there. Just amazing.

When I finally got to meet Brian and Al in 2017, my parting comment to them was "Thank you for Sloop John B." / I appreciate yet another look showing how the song has evolved to how it's played by Brian's band and the Beach Boys in recent years. Brian is one of the greatest music producers of all time. The first time I got to hear Brian's Band in concert, in August 2005 on his "Smile" tour, with the Stockholm Strings and Horns, Darian Sahanaja, Jeffrey Foskett, Probyn Gregory, Bob Lizik and Taylor Mills, among many others, has to be in the top five of my life.

Brian had so much confidence in his abilities that he had no problem telling these amazing musicians, who were much older than him, what to play. And they recognized his genius! He wasn’t a dictator, he just considered them all as equals.
And that bass line in the second half!! I swear Phil Lesh heard that and incorporated that approach, ie, don’t play the root note 😁 Truly a monumental bass part. And as much as I love Carol Kaye, I think Brian told her exactly what to play

The bottom end supplied by Carol Kaye on the fender bass and Jack Nimitz on the sax really make this recording. Bottom end in folk music was unknown due to there being no cross-over path for musicians who played these instruments in the genre. Its still unlikely with only a few historical exceptions like Steeleye Span.

Enlightening on several levels... also proves that the recording process hasn't essentially changed in 50+ years. Many thanks for posting this.

Actually, it's changed enormously. ProTools and digital editing/mixing/mastering has irrevocably changed the recording process.

Technology has really changed things. However one still needs the ability to craft the song, no matter the song and how it is made.
