And just to add to this song. Arcade Fire were adored by David Bowie for their musicanship and originality. Tunnels is quite difficult to explain, because Win Butler (that guy singing) uses tons of metaphors.. almost in every song. This song is about living in bleak and empty society ( snow buries my neighbourhood) and his parents not loving each other. He uses children's imagination to express feelings- digging tunnels from window to another window, to get away from this bleak and sad life.. to go for the girl he likes. Then he spends his life with this girl in the middle of the town, alone, doing what they want and not being judged by people ( growing hair long... you know how society felt about it in certain times). They were getting stronger together ( skins getting thicker from the snow). Again, he repeats how much this girl means to him- day grows dim, but she sings the golden hymn. She changed his life and they forgot about their past- "we forgot all the names we used to know", but then he tells how they can remember bedrooms of their parents and friends.. so there's still something. Then he gets sad about his parents and not knowing what happened to them (Win Butler, guy singing moved from his home town to Montreal)... and again, admiring this girl. He and that woman on drums are actually together, so there's quite a big chance that it was about them.
I heard that when Bowie heard them for the first time, he immediately went to every record store reasonably close to him, bought all their available albums and passed them out to all his friends. He really dug them, and even guested on Reflektor. That’s one hell of a statement of approval
