  • Indra Tamang, originally a Nepalese immigrant and longtime housekeeper, inherited two luxurious apartments at The Dakota in New York City from his employer, Ruth Ford. Ruth Ford, an actress and socialite, developed a close bond with Tamang, who served her faithfully for years. Upon her death in 2009, she bequeathed her significant estate, including the prestigious apartments, to Tamang, a gesture that dramatically transformed his life. This unexpected inheritance drew public attention and highlighted the deep, personal connections that can form beyond traditional employer-employee relationships.

Interested in books about the architecture and history of the Dakota, Friar Park, and Tittenhurst Park? I've written a bunch about them. You can find all of them on Amazon and elsewhere. Buying my books helps support my research and productions. Thank you! tinyurl.com/DakotaHistoryCardinal

I cannot help but suspect the relationship between Charles Henry Ford and Indra Tamang was as much personal as professional. Tamang became effectively the life partner of Charles and brother-in-law to Ruth Ford.

If you wanna know what I think .... well .... ummm .... I can't really say. I wouldn't want Tamang's family to read this, but .... well .. it kinda sorta maybe seems like .... ummmm .... Oh, I don't really know. Know what I mean?

@@StrangeHistoryX Okay, so how would you explain that a cook/butler live-in got everything?
It is not clear how many years Tamang lived in with Charles, and then Ruth. But somehow he was able to marry his own woman and have his own children. Some people are very flexible....
I grew up in a time when homosexuality had to be hidden. Keeping a lover/life partner as an employee was just one subterfuge. Rock Hudson and his agent being another.

Temang was a trusted friend, servant, and caregiver to both Ford’s. He saw them at their best and cared for them at their worst. No wonder he was left everything. Of course, we don’t know the full story of Ruth and her daughter, but maybe there was a good reason she was cut from the estate…who knows?

I wonder if Shelley was her biological daughter or the daughter of Zachary Scott. Not that that should matter but look at the difference in treatment between Julian and Sea by Yoko Ono. It's night and day.

Why did Ruth disinherit her own children in the first place? Did the children disrespect their Parents? Did the Parents Disrespect their children? Were the children some form of criminals?

I'd have done the same thing. The daughter had all the benefits of the mother's wealth from birth. The butler/caretaker/friend was with her til her last.....she trusted, depended, and loved him, and wanted him and his family to be taken care of financially for the rest of his life. Often, our chosen family's bonds are stronger than our birth family's. Congratulations to him!

Those of us who live in Brookhaven, MS, know that Miss Ruth and Mr. Charles Henri were born in our town. Their father owned four hotels across our state and the brother and sister were raised in their father's property in Columbus, MS. Hazelhurst is best know as the birthplace of the great diva Lypsinka's alter ego, John Epperson.

I work with the elderly. They only remember the things people dont do.
You could show up 6 days a week for your parent and they will remember the 1 day you didnt and talk badly about you all week month long.
Its not their fault its all new to them and confusing.
Allowing this man to inherit everything is not real.
Everyone should figure out by 40 what way things are gonna be and not give their best things to the nicest person infront of them before they go to heaven

Well, he may have been the only person who treated them as human beings and not ATMs. His demeanor showed who he really was and it wasn’t a money grabbing greed-monger. He probably never, ever expected to be the heir and they knew it. Humility, respect, integrity, sincerity and loyalty go very far in these cases. I applaud their efforts as well as the spirituality to know you really can’t take it with you. Bless us all! 🙏🪷❤️

What happened to the saying you can choose your friends, but not your family? What about people who are kind but have no family? Are they to be dismissed in favour of some distant relative or entitled child just because they share a few genes? We're ALL related in the end: we all arose from the same mother.

More then likely Charles took him under his wing to groom him. Sadly it happened all the time. In the end Tamang was rewarded for his loyalty and service but usually the groomedchild was discarded and another taken. I'm not saying this to be rude but it is and was reality for a lot of foreign children.
