A footplate trip on the Bluebell's Q class from Sheffield Park to Horsted Keynes

- A trip up from Sheffield Park to Horsted Keynes hauling a Santa Special.
The service was running at a lower speed than normal so that Santa and his helpers could visit all the travelling children.
Even with the reduced speed, hand holding the camera was quite tricky. Think a gimbal is required!

Great video. Fantastic to see how a crew works together and also to hear the locomotive from a totally different perspective. Lots of little sounds you don;t normally hear.

When I drove that engine the steam reverser kept working towards mid gear and had to be constantly corrected.
It feels refresh after seeing these type of videos in which they again start and run those old steam engine like how they use to drive it in older times😉😘👌👍

Nice film Mike. I think the movement with the camera gives more of a 'feel' to the activity on the footplate. Have a happy New Year when it pulls into the station :)
Cheers Brian. Moving around the footplate does allow you to see more of what the crew are doing but I wish I could be a bit more steady!

When I went last Christmas with my family, this was the locomotive that pulled us on the Santa special. The ride was very smooth and the loco itself is actually remarkably “calm” compared to some other ones. Thinking back to the days of Thomas the tank engine and all the adventures the engines in the stories went on and the antics they got up to, I decided to revisit my childhood and think of my own name and gender of the loco and what kind of personality she’d have if she was from a Thomas story. I know the Bluebell has the real Stepney who was also featured in a Thomas episode, and they have another named loco, Fen Church, I think. I wonder what people would think of the name Queenie for a Q Class.
Thanks for watching. The infrastructure team have been relaying a lot of track in recent years and their largely unseen efforts do make a big difference to the ride

This good video reminds me of my dual trips between Ammàn and Maan in 1952 and 1968 about 220kms were done in about 7 to 7 30 hours through wild desert mostly not populated the train was the Linley mean of transportation to South Jordan in 1962 the desert road was established easier and faster than the train 3 hours by baved road instead of 7 hours by train but the train was more safe

Regulator: determines the amount of steam admitted to the cylinders.

@@pra2221 The regulator controls the amount to steam entering the steam chest and the reverser controls the amount of steam admitted to the cylinders from the steam chest, determining the power the cylinders can deliver and therefore the speed of the loco.
These controls are analogous to the throttle (accelerator) and gearbox of a car. Obviously, the speed will be affected by the load the locomotive is pulling and any gradients it encounters.

China i think, but im not sure.
I remember watching a show about engines in 1999, I think the host was Robbie Coltrane. In one episode they were still being used in a country in Africa, Zambia or Zimbabwe if my memory serves me right. Why? Because labour there is cheap and the country has plentiful coal reserves so the economics favour steam over diesels. I recall they had a few newer Chinese built locomotives, from Datong Locomotive Works, in their fleet. I don't know if they're still using steam power now in 2020.
The railway which is shown here is the Bluebell Railway, a heritage railway that operates steam & old diesels in the UK, there are many heritage railways in the uk.

Does anybody know what the fireman is doing with his shovel at around 2:02?
Harry, thanks for watching. Don't quote me but I think he was checking how the coal was banked up in the firebox.
He's using the shovel to direct air around the firebox to look for holes in the fire.
He might also have been stoking it a little
@@joshneville8254 not shovelling at the timestamp above. Don't quote me but in the past I've seen firemen using the reflection off the shovel to check the state of the fire under the door.
