- This mixing tutorial will show you how to properly use EQ while mixing a song in FL Studio. EQ is extremely important when mixing and mastering, in order to get a clean, crisp, and clear-sounding mix. EQ is perhaps the most important mixing tool available to you as a music producer, so it's important to learn how to use EQ properly if you want to get a good-sounding mix. When mixing a song, you want to ensure that all the sounds in the mix have their own place in the mix and that there are no clashing frequencies. That's not always possible though, so you'll typically have to use an EQ (equalizer) in order to take out some frequencies from some sounds, and boost other sounds in order to fill space in your mix.
You typically want to roll off the low-end on anything that's not intended to be a bass sound. You want to ensure that you don't get any build-up in any part of your frequency spectrum, like in the low-end, midrange, or high-end. That's why EQing is so important. Without EQ this becomes almost impossible to do. This mixing tutorial will show you how to properly use an EQ in order to get a crisp and clear mix that sounds professional. Learning how to EQ is by far the most important thing when it comes to mixing.

EQ stands for "Equalize". is one of the most important tools available to you when it comes to mixing. This video will teach you the most important aspects of EQing.
EQ is extremely important in order to make a mix sound good.

such a great tutorial man. 6 years ago when i began producing this video would have been super helpful! When I started making music in the 90's, there were no such thing as tutorials. RUclips didn't even exist yet. Now days it's a totally different game. We now have daws and tutorials. But I found out that a lot of the tutorials had very little useful information, and tended to drag out the time a lot...
Some youtubers prefer to talk about their life, their dog and so on. And other tutorials are just simply plain wrong!
A friend of mine was struggling with this problem, so I decided to help him out by making a tutorial just for him. A tutorial that was as short, simple and straight to the point as possible. No babbling, just informative. Eventually other people started taking note of it as well.
And that's how it all began. Even though I loose money on every video I make I keep on doing it because I find it rewarding to be able to help people out, and get feedback like yours!

why the huff did i go to college, ive learnt more in 17 mins than i ever did in 4 years of college. ive been following along editing the eq of a song and it sounds so much more full and and polished. im glad ive stumbled across this. new sub and ill be watching the whole series. i do like pro-q3 as you can use side eq and is faily essential when making hardstyle which is what im learning to make

These guidelines are all excellent and your videos are very high quality in terms of efficiently explaining and demonstrating the topic. I've been producing for 20+ years, but for those first 10 the technicals of mixing and mastering, beyond level setting, were not even on my radar! But then for these past 10 years I've progressively understood and applied mixing and mastering on a surface level. Now I'm at that point where I'm understanding the need to take it even deeper because I want my music to really stand out and have that polish and sparkle. Mixing and Mastering really is an artform, a knowledge-based skill, and one that can only be perfected through much experience. (I have huge respect for the masters!) I'm not at the level I want to be yet but I've come a long way (and for anyone reading this, if you are new to producing, make sure you take note of mixing and mastering off the bat cuz it will go a long way in helping you improve your sound). As for you Firewalk, Thanks for your videos man, I'm gleaning a lot from them, and with each one I can feel my skill arsenal becoming progressively more refined! Power levels approaching 9000!!!!
I impulsively bought FL studio a few weeks ago. I have no fucking clue what I'm doing mix/eq wise. This video was very helpful and I can tell a huge difference in the rendered sound quality from what it was before I touched the EQ. I'll keep watching the other videos on this playlist most likely. I can totally understand the confusion! The thing is, I had already started making a tutorial about how to EQ. But then I changed my mind and decided to make a "how to mix" series instead, which will consist of 4-5 tutorials. That's why the order is messed up.
Part 1 hasn't been made yet. Part 1 will deal with getting the levels right, gain staging and such. :)

I knew Eq was powerful, but i could and still cant find the right spots for the Eq's.
People like you, make it look so easy, that i feel like a complete idiot every time i watch a video like this.
Last time i wanted to make a remix or bootleg, i ended up deleting everyting i worked on for like 7 days, just because i could not get everything work together.
i hope i can start creating stuff that actualy sounds nice, because you have put a huge load of effort into this tutorial series, and what could be better then get projects from subscribers back, to show their results.

Thank you for the tutorial, it will help me as a beginner. I dislike mixing and mastering tracks because I never seem to make it sound how I want it. Your explanations were better than all the tutorials I have seen. The good thing is that you tell us why we are doing something and the benefits of performing the task. The way you split the eq into low, mid low, mid and high was fantastic because the eq doesn't show the different frquency elements so a beginner like myself would not know.

Unfortunately this is not a released track. I rarely use released tracks in my videos in order to avoid any copyright strikes on my channel. The thing is, even if I use my own tracks in the videos, they will usually be released by a record label, which basically owns the rights to it from that point, and then it's often out of my hands if they want to put a claim on the video or not. Therefore, I usually either use old unfinished projects for my videos, or I just come up with something for the purpose of that video. Typically just an 8 bar section or something. :)

Had a piano beat track already mixed with all the knowledge I gained by myself/trying stuff out while watching the "How to mix" series. Wow finally some quality tips on working with FL Studio. Actually I wanted to watch just one video but now I have already seen 4 and I can't stop because they are so understandable and professional explained with good examples. Hi FireWalk! Glad to see someone providing sound advice on using the FL Studio Parametric EQ2, there are many RUclips Videos out there that are totally misleading.
One suggestion I'd make to "speed up" the workflow, would be to show how to set up quick use presets.
For example, setting up a high pass preset ready to go with your preferred roll off steepness (on the parametric "1" "Band Token").
Same for a "Low Pass" template with the "7" Band Token set with your preferred roll off steepness.
Additionally I also have things like a "high/low pass" with both of the above in the preset.
I know you were giving a simplified tutorial for EQ, maybe adding the preset idea for users would be a bonus - food for thought.
Re the steepness, I'd suggest the stock standard "gentle" slope I'd personally prefer for actual sound files of for example instruments like guitars, bass, horns, strings, and also vocals. Depends a lot on many variables as you've outlined, and personal style. I just find with sound files of real instruments/vocals, the steeper gradient can be less pleasant, but fully recognize there are many views on this.
Anyway, upshot is I think the videos you're making are excellent, and a very welcome addition to the growing knowledge base for how to effectively use FL Studio 12.x, as well as providing sound principles on Mixing/Mastering in general.
Well done! I'll make it a point to alert developing FL Studio users about your videos, and recommend them subscribing to your channel.
Rohan, first of all, thanks for your comment. That's absolutely right! You're spot on on everything. I wanted to show all the steps involved. You're also right about why I don't use shortcuts in this video. If I did, beginners wouldn't know what I did. :)
Your suggestion is an excellent one. I'm planning on making some more workflow related videos like that for various things. Using shortcuts and presets can really save a lot of time in the long run. I have a long list of things to do, and it's just getting longer every day :D
I always try to make my videos as short as possible. I'm not here to waste anyone's time. However, EQ is such a substantial topic. No matter what you say, someone CAN contradict you. Because what's right in one situation might not be right in another.
For example: Live instruments like guitars, pianos and such should be rolled off gently to sound the most natural. However, again, it depends on the circumstances. Is it a lead sound? Is it a background sound? Is it in a quiet part of the track? is it in a very busy part of the track? Is the sound sidechained or not? And if it is, how aggressively is it sidechained?
Another example:
I said that you should try to avoid massive EQ boosts. That's a general advice, and a good rule of thumb. But as you know, there's no rules in music. if it sounds good, it sounds good. Depending on the sound, and where it sits in the mix, it might be necessary to some times apply a huge EQ boost, and there's nothing wrong with that.
There are so many things to take in to consideration when applying EQ. Making an EQ tutorial is extremely difficult, you can only give general advice, unless you want to make a 20 hour video. :p
For this reason I was originally reluctant to making this EQ tutorial. But people kept asking for one, so I had to try my best to condense this huge topic into as short a time as possible.
Unfortunately for new producers, it will take years of experience until they truly master EQ. A lot of trial and error. :)
Even seasoned long time professional producers will find themselves learning new things and techniques all the time.
As producers, we can spend a lifetime learning something new every day, and still we'll never be able to know all there is to know. :)

In my experience, low cut filter on kick or bass tend to introduce phase shifting on each element. I started using shelf filters instead to lower certain part or take the time to make them sit good together as good as I can before the mixing session (in sound design stage focusing on synthesizing the kick and the bass to fit certain frequency spectrum - exactly in the key of the track). Then I add multiband saturation on both kick and bass with bands split according to harmonic interval of the track (crossover points). When I start to EQ, i'd do it on a bus group, not separately to avoid phasing on separate elements.
Using osciloscope can be really helpful in seeing how excatly low cut filters change the phase of kick/bass. Using linear phase EQ parameter could lower the impact of phase shifting. I made this technique my default go-to recently and started hearing better results than when I did low cutting. Maybe it helps someone to try it :)

I was using eq wrong for probably 3 months before I learned really what eq does!...I had no clue what every video was talking about when they said to cut off frequencies and low range,mid range,and all this stuff...I had no clue what people were talking about and it felt too complex ,however I really feel like I'm grasping onto what its supposed to do now...its supposed to cut off certain unneeded sounds/frequencies in order to make room for other instruments in the mix...if anyone is struggling to figure out what this means,don't worry you will figure it out,even if it takes a few months...I've only been making beats for about 7 months or so,so don't think I'm professional or anything but I just wanted to help anyone out who needed it
There's a lot of videos out there about EQ, but it's often made much more difficult than it really is. It's all about making room in the track. Think of it like bandwidth. You only have so much bandwidth, and you don't want to use any of it up needlessly. The kick and the bass takes up a lot of bandwidth in the low end, so you don't want any other elements like leads or hats to steal any bandwidth from the kick and the bass. Therefore, we can cut out the low frequencies from those elements. That will make the bass come through better. The same goes for the other bands as well. You boost one thing and reduce another thing to prioritize what comes through. :)

I have 3 requests which I consider quite interesting you could do tutorial about.
1.Creating those complex groovy trance percussion loops.
2.How to manipulate various parameters on sample of any perc and tonal instruments like Clave,shakers,congas so you mimmick changes like someone was playing on live instrument.
3.How to make real choir pads without buying expensive plugins if possible ( I know there is a lot of precessing related to it )

To bypass a lot f EQ you could use control surface button and link the on/off button slot of mixer track. Use the multilink to internal control.
