Underrated movie and underrated car. Even 35 years later the car still looks badass.
hell yes
Damn Straight
In the hands of Charlie Sheen, this car was unstoppable. It was as if the car was fueled by tiger blood.
I thought it looked cool back then now to me it just looks stupid
@@Baka_Oppai nah. It's cool
35 years later and I'd still LOVE to have an M4S in my garage!
You might get you wish.
Chip foose found the car in a school yard. And is fixing it and remolding the car
I'm a Chevy guy, due to the fact that my dad worked for the GM plant in Anderson, IN, but I'd own this in a heartbeat!!! Yeppers!!
440 horsepower out of a 4cylinder back then is insane. Even now would be considered a powerhouse
i wonder if they still had the emisson problems that they did in the 80's to make these car's street legal, i bet yeah today you could crank out almost 1000 hp out of that motor. Well at least i would hope so =)
If I am not mistaken, this car with a weight of 2,500 lbs. could reach a speed nearly 200 mph.
440 was high for the time but it wasn't insane. European rally cars were producing the same reliably in a race setting.
Now it can be bought in a showroom car with warranty
@@JeremiahDouglas not at all
Everything was barely OBD1, so very primative emissions controls, like 1-wire 02 sensors 🤢
It's not so much the number of cylinders, it's the displacement and RPM. It comes in at 200 hp per liter. At the time, that was pretty good. Although, it's now obsolete. Even my Kawasaki ZX-6R makes 204 hp per liter naturally aspirated (636 CC at 15,000 rpm with 130 hp). No turbocharger required and just 91 octane.
"It's Outside, Turbo Interceptor. The only one In existence".....Jamie! *The Wraith*
I was probably 11 or 12 when I first saw the Wraith in the early 90s. Even as a kid and still to this day, I think it was such a good movie with a great story, a great soundtrack, and decent acting.
Agreed and same!
195mph out of a 4 cylinder, 2.2L (135 cubic inch) engine....back in 1986! Go Dodge!!
I heard in the past on another video that covered the car they claimed that the engine was a cosworth. I really have no idea which is correct.
@@waynetate9895 IT's a Chrysler 2.2 135 cu in engine with a 4 valve per cyl. Cosworth head and twin turbos.
but they had to put it in a Pontiac frame
Wasn’t even a Pontiac frame. The frame was a custom built chassis for making a fiero lighter to be able to compete in road racing designed by a racing chassis builder . They used that chassis but stretched it out . There for not even the same as the fiero either
Go Dodge? You mean Go Cosworth, they made that engine go.
“Before we had CGI, everything was real”
That comment really got me 😂
So true. They might have save a crew member’s life had CGI existed back then.
I'm sure the bullets were real too.
@@reanetsemoleleki8219No Joke. IRL If it was a Akira Kurosawa movie... well we know the arrows and horses were real. AND he intentionally killed at least one horse to make an epic shot and shot live arrows at actors without telling them.
It wasn't computer, but it was drawn on cel paint effects if done before Industrial Lights and Magic became a known studio.
In the movie they did speed up the frames to give the appearance that the car was going faster than what it was. This was very common in movies back then, particularly low budget ones. So yeah the car was real but multiple scenes in the movie the car was not going as fast as it may look.
This is a Classic 80's Movie. Dam Shame it's Underrated

I don’t care what anybody says, I was alive when that movie came out and it was one of the best chase scenes, I’ve ever seen in my life. I instantly fell in love with this movie, and been a fan since
WOW! This was so nice to see!!! Bob would love this!!! I was a designer at Chrysler for 11 years. Bob was my first design manager in the studio in Highland Park for 3 years before we moved to Auburn Hills. He showed me this car and some of the development as the car was completed. What doesn't come across in the photos is how stunning the root beer colored paint is on the car and how generous the curves really are. These were the last of the themes before we got into the LH cab-forward cars and after the K-cars. Bob was an absolutely terrific guy, awesome car designer and very much a car guy through and through. I designed the exterior to the first generation Neon with Bob as my manager. I couldn't ask for a more terrific guy to work with. You should seek out his son Dean who could probably add to more info. I saw Bob about 4 years ago at a friends funeral. Another awesome designer, Michael Burton (look him up too!). Bob was having a lot of health issues but was still his same vibrant self. It was so nice to catch up with him. Thanks again for showing this.
Thank you very much for all your info. After a number of years being interested in movie and tv cars, I have been learning more and more about people behind the scenes who helped design and build this magnificent cars of our past and one thing I wanted this channel to be is as respectful and informative to those people who rarely get a mention and to give them as much recognition as possible for all their work. I am glad you liked this video. There is always a chance that one day a follow up may happen and I will remember to seek your advice when this does happen. Glad I was able to help bring back some fond memories for you. Cheers.
@@MFPMapFilmProductions Happy to help. I too would like to be respectful to the "actual" people who designed the vehicles. Often times in our business the real story gets lost. All the best!
I love that some of the design elements of this car can be seen in other cars now days and this film rocks

I used to watch it everyday on HBO as a kid. Was always trying to figure out what kind of car it was. Way ahead of its time.
Never mind the car itself, I fell in love with the engine sound from the movie. Not sure if that is the engine's original sound. But the movie engine sound is what I will always remember. I would imagine that is what most people will remember. The Engine Rev Up Sound. Yes this is very much a cult classic. Thank you Dodge for making a difference.
The sound of the engine was a combination of the engine itself and the bubbly sound of the Jetson Sky cars in my opinion
Yeah it had a very distinctive growl to it.
Sorry, The sound in the movie was an over dub. Made to sound other worldly. Personally, I Thought It Sucked ! The cars real sound was much better. I heard it run one night they were moving it around the basement level at CTC. My wife worked there and volunteered at the museum some weekends. 👊😎👍
This is my favorite movie of all time! In the early 90s, I used to go out to Tucson, to cruise around, looking for the locations. In 2009, i had the opportunity to do a scene with David Sherrill (Skank) in In/Significant others. I hollered "Skank!" at him from across the floor, and everyone went silent, thinking I had just insulted their star, LOL. You can imagine how relieved they all were, when he hollered "Yeah! Man, I haven't heard that one in a LONG time!" back at me. We shook hands and started talking. We suddenly realized that everyone was just standing there and watching us, thinking we were old friends, LOL. Really nice guy.
Jake!!!!....Jake.......Jamieeeeee!!!😂😂😂...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! love it
The wraith is my absolute favorite movie. I've honestly watched it at least a 100 times over the years.
I love this car and the movie. As a 5 year old seeing the movie I instantly fell in love with it. It was so far ahead of its time in so many ways, too bad it never entered production. I think it deserves more recognition among car enthusiasts. Thank you for the video as there is not much stuff about it on YT.

I remember seeing a classified ad for the original molds for the body in the back of a kit car magazine circa 1995/96/97. I wonder if they are still out there.
First time I ever saw that movie I noticed the Dodge logo on the front.
Maybe the 2 time I watched it i saw it .I remember thinking wow. I need to figure out what that is ? I was shocked to find deaths car was a dodge lol

AWESOME FILM, I WENT TO THE MOVIES TO SEE THIS 3 TIMES; AWESOME FILM ALONG WITH ANOTHER CALLED THE CAR....GREAT....
Pure 1980's feeling and the best of the 80's.
I was 16 years old when that came out. I loved that movie. I even watched it a couple of weeks ago as it is here on RUclips for free! The Wraith/Turbo Interceptor inspired a different Dodge creation that no one really knows about. A few a blocks from my house in the Indian Hills neighborhood of Hopkinsville, KY there was a guy really into late 60s and early 70s muscle cars. There was one car from the 1980S he liked the styling of but not the complete package. The 1996 Dodge Daytona Turbo Z. The factory car was front wheel drive, 2.0 L Turbo with double overhead cans. The cars total output at the crank was like 160HP. The interior had a lot of plastic parts that would get brittle over the years and break. The seats ripped quickly, the headliner fell after just 6 mo.
Well this guy loved the looks of the 1st generation Daytina Turbo Z but hated everything else. I'm not sure who he knew for pulling what strings but he managed to get an 87 Daytona Turbo Z complete body but with a transmission hump, drive shaft channel, and the rear shaped out for a rear axle. He built it with a 340ci block, alloy heads and a 6pack of 2brl carbs custom drive shaft. Customers drive linkages as well as A arms. I was crazy fast when he was done as it should hive been putting 350hp to 380 to the ground
I seen that car at the Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills a few years ago.
I just looked into it. Permanently closed.
Dam, I live very close to there, wish I got to see it.

Then I never saw it again for years and years, and I never knew the name of it to look for it...it was always a faded memory to me. Little note to the "twin over head cams". Normaly its called DOHC Double OverHead Camshaft.
And for the people they like crazy cars with massiv wings should look into "Zakspeed Capri group 5".
This beast was first raced 1980 with a 1,7 Liter Turbo 600hp engine.
The predecessor had an 1,4 Liter Turbo with 460hp.
And on the Japan side of things there where the silhouette formula.
To be honest the Dodge M4S Turbo was pretty late to the party.
Cheers for the extra info. When it comes to movies and cars, I am somewhat balanced (or at least try to be) I know there are people out there that know a way lot more than me about a particular engine or car and sometimes, if I try to be too much of a try hard and get very technical where I can't fully confirm something or it changes from model to model, I try to keep it in check. I have seen the DOHC label before, though not fully aware of what its all about I must admit. I do agree I think that the US got into the 4 Cylinder game late and did not reach its full potential sooner. Ackerman had mentioned, though others were happy with his 198.4 MPH speed he got, he knew it could have made 220 had they put more time into it.
@john jones I diden't compare the engines.
