Adding iPads to Apple School Manager or an MDM

- In this video I show you how to add iPads to an Apple School Manager account that weren't automatically added by Apple through purchasing through an Apple account. This can be done with any iPad that is purchased privately or received through grants as was the case in this instance.

Thank you so much for this video! I was struggling for days to enroll our organization's IPads before I found this video.
So glad I could help!!
Super helpful! Thank you! I was able to enroll an iphone by connecting to my hotspot and then following these steps
Awesome!
great video.
now only if apple made it easier for school admins etc, to remove activation lock on ipads that have lost management profiles/missing from ASM
I know this video is 1 year old but thanks for posting. I can't believe where I was going wrong was trying to activate the ipad before assigning the intune MDM. I thought once it was in ASM it didn't matter when it was assigned. Cheers.
So glad I could help out! Some of my videos I post are literally for my own reference. i.e. so when I do this a year later I can think, "how did I do that again?, oh yeah, I put it up on RUclips, I can check there!" LOL It's great when others can benefit. I've got a bunch more stuff I've recorded, it's just hard to get the ambition to edit and post for the average of 15 people that watch them. :-P This video is one of the exceptions. HA!
Have you ever encounter this type of issue upon setting up the device it says "invalid Profile" and on Apple configurator 2 "[MCProfileErrorDomain - 0x3E8 (1000)]"? thanks
Yes, I believe I address that in the video actually. It's a common issue and one I ran into several times. If you follow the process exactly as I laid out in the video it will work. :D

Is the mdm device enrollment program written into the device firmware or is it stored in the hard drive software? Thank you
It's all stored on Apple's servers. Effectively you are building a package of information about the iPad that you are sharing with Apple and asking them to use whenever the iPad 'calls home'. When an iPad first boots after reformatting it 'calls home' and effectively asks "who am I and who do I belong to". This prevents someone from stealing the device and reformatting it and setting it up as their own. iPads & iPhones will not finish their setup process until they connect to the Apple server. You setup your MDM on your Apple School Manager and then assign devices to that MDM (you can actually have more than one).
@@masterofnone8065 Ok thank you. Does the administrator have remote access to view files, folders, or applications history on the device? I know that they can add/remove apps, change desktop background, or even do a total remote wipe but I'm concerned about potential eavesdropping.
@@hippo-potamus Nope. Predominantly just for adding/removing apps, theft prevention and the like. Another thing you can do is apply licensing to groups of iPads. Example, an organization (like a school) may decide to purchase a paid verison of a specific app. They can purchase the licsense and assign those licenses for a specific group of iPads in their fleet.
@@masterofnone8065 Ok. Thank you so much for all your input. -Cheers mate
Do you need a mdm to enroll devices? Or can i just use apple configurator? Whenever i try it, its say the configuration for your ipad could not be downloaded from "my company" and The request timed out.
You would need some form of MDM for this process, yes. In this example I am using Securly (previously TechPilot, Previously TabPilot).
@@nickster0007 So its not possible to only use apple configurator to enroll devices into apple business manager?
@@edvinbjork4819 Yes, you should be able to do that. You would have to configure that differently under Apple Manager first however. Go to school.apple.com and set it up there.
Does the iPhone or iPad need to be in recovery mode for this to work?
It will need to be reimaged, yes.
Any way to do it only on iPhone
Not that I can think of. You pretty much need the Apple Configurator to accomplish it properly. Maybe with proof of purchase/etc. you *might* be able to get an Apple store to do it.
I don’t have a MacBook for apple configuration I have a pc but i like this video.
Thank you!
Mine says profile can only be installed on a supervised device but how can i make it supervised if i can't install the MDM!? I honestly hate MDM and Apple.
That means it's already associated with an organization. If its a School, login to Apple School Manager and find the device. Then reassign it to the MDM that you want it pointed to.
But when I try to sign up they don’t approve me
By 'they' do you mean Apple? You would need to get a hold of Apple support for that one.
I don’t like iPad mdms
Believe me.. none of us do. :-P But they are necessary.
@@masterofnone8065 I removed mine
And I have a real school
do you se11 apple school account
