Are you learning WordPress? Do you use WordPress regularly as a developer? Let me know in the comments what you think about WordPress!
Quick question Dorian. Should I purchase a Mac book air? (I need a new laptop and I'm not sure if I should get a windows or Mac)
Wordpress is great for small business and ecommerce platforms. I love how I teach clients where they can change text and images using acf blocks and seeing their mind blown away.
I’m about to graduate bootcamp so naturally I started looking for freelance jobs lol 90% of the web dev are Wordpress jobs…. Hurts my soul because I enjoyed react but seeing how easy this is just leaves me thinking… 🥹
I have been avoiding Wordpress as a self-taught developer for YEARS, partially because of the blurry lines in the dev market and partially because influencers said it was not valued by employers. I changed my tune (much like you it seems) over the last year and have decided to FULLY embrace it. I noticed that a lot of agencies and entry level positions actually prefer that you know Wordpress because the time to value ratio for Wordpress is actually really high. Knowing how to code actually gives us as developers and edge over "Wordpress Devs" that can't even write a line of CSS. Lastly, for anyone that's had to write or rewrite and authentication API.... need I say more? Wordpress comes with authentication out-of-the-box and a highly extensible platform that allows you to build custom functionality for your clients or leverage pre-built plugins that other developers have spent years perfecting. It really is the best value out there for developers and non developers alike.
do you use jquery or vanilla javascript?
I'm glad everyone hates on WordPress, it just leaves more jobs for me. I got my first dev job a year ago with WordPress making 60k, and now, 1 year later, I just landed a 90k WordPress job. So only 1 year into my dev career WordPress already has me at 90k with no degree at all, all self taught.
💯 dude - everyone has their opinion about learn this or that - I'm going hard into WP for my local business community. Eventually I'll go full stack but first need the 💵💵
@@jay_wright_thats_right WordPress hate is super common. I see it from many people constantly.
"You can't make more than 60k as a WordPress dev"
Seen that or something similar many, many times.
"WordPress development isn't real development"
Seen that tons of times from many people.
Honestly, I don't understand how anyone HASN'T seen people hating on WordPress.
@@jay_wright_thats_right The hate I'm talking about isn't from any RUclipsr at all. It's just random people.
You must be living under a rock.
@@jay_wright_thats_right When the topic of a stream or a thread or a video is WordPress, there are plenty of people that comment on it.
Those people that comment hate on WordPress ALL the time.
Again, you're living under a rock to be unaware of this.
It's like I'm telling you that the internet exists.
David so did you learn WordPress from beginner(no knowledge on web dev) in only one year? If so how many hours per day did you spend on this journey? I'm going down a similar path and have been stuck in tutorial hell.(being a loser just smoking weed and not actually putting in the real work to become a proficient dev)
I'm a web developer for more than 20 years using pure native PHP coding. Most of my clients' web pages requires lots of algorithms for computations and conditions. Because of that, I have learned so many techniques in placing separate and independent php pages in a single php page and make it work like they are one whole php page. When I switch to WordPress, I got bored of the pre-made templates and the drag and drop routine. I missed the challenges that pure PHP coding gives. I really enjoyed watching smart web pages work as it was intended to work, made by me without using ready-made templates.
I've been preaching this for years to new devs. WordPress can do MANY THINGS! Creating custom templates is a great way to build your own business as well.
Like codingphase pointed out, wordpress is an excellent start for a self taught programmer. The barier of entry is not that high, many experienced developers try to move from wordpress to new technologies and thats why the competition is not that aggresive. And once you got your first job in the industry switching to something else after 6 months or 1 year is doable, and in the meantime you are getting paid.
I think WordPress is not that hard to learn. I've been building and maintaining WP sites for a few years now. Recently, just started learning how to code.
If you learned WordPress ,why do you still need to learn codding,..please can you explain more...thank you
@@arberqamilllugiqiart3078 with a little bit of coding skills, you can do a lot of customization to the WP sites.
What you've learned so far In 11 months ?
Now it has been a year... Do you wish you had learn-to-code first or are you happy that you learned WP?
People don't usually admit when they were wrong, nice one buddy !
this dude also made a video saying "Dont Learn Wordpress"
He mentions that in the beginning that he's changed his mind. Pay attention
I went with the don’t learn Wordpress.
Like it's so confusing
Could you make a video about how to make a resume for a software engineering position (especially for those who don’t have a CS degree/ didn’t go to a bootcamp). Did employers care/treat you differently because you were self taught? Thank you. I love your content.
As a self-taught Front-end developer, WordPress was a must do for me when I started out. Just got done with core frontend technologies courses last month with React being my main tool for developing component UIs.
Just got started with WordPress this month to cement my web dev skillset and I'm happy with the progress I've made with WP development so far, particularly in customisation of themes and the plugins. I believe it will also be a high time for me to learn PHP for WP runtime and MySQL for database.
Looking forward to building low-code projects with this fantastic software.
I think wordpress is DEFINITELY worth learning. It's 30% of the net and you can make a living literally just doing wordpress sites/development and plugins.
This is exactly what I needed to hear Dorian 😆 thanks!
Glad I could help!
Good to see you on again Dorian!
Hope the recovery goes well.
And video quality is definitely going up too, I can see the effort is starting to pay off.
Thank you very much!
WordPress is the reason I got my first dev job!
How did you learn WordPress? Any specific materials?
i've never looked at wordpress for a decade and now i'm looking at it to get a job with my php skills, laravel just isn't cutting it anymore
I see plenty of job postings asking for wordpress. I gave up on a bootcamp last year and am currently refreshing my mind in html css and js(and now i am actually getting it) and I will learn wordpress right after as i want to code my own blog to use for my portfolio and revenue. And move on to other skills. Your story always keeps me motivated Dorian
That sounds like a great plan! I honestly wish I would have documented my learning to code journey when I first started learning. Big regret for me but I still highly recommend starting a blog and yt right now, content creation is a great way to make some passive income through a creative outlet. Anyway, thanks for watching and keep working on improving a little everyday!
Wow that's just like me. Goodluck!!
@@daniyellaharmon yeah but I just turned 36 and i want to quit my job. Lol
Wordpress is awesome, I was so blown away by how much good Wordpress plugins are able to do
It's highly opinionated, but the difference in starting up cost is staggering to say the least
it's a great job to add arabic subtitles ..you have a lot of followers love you in the middle east
It’s mind blowing that sites such as TechCrunch, Disney, Sony music, Zillow, Bloomberg were made with Wordpress.
I'm kinda torn because on one hand I wanna learn Wordpress since so many job listings seem to require it but on the other hand I don't wanna get stuck being a Wordpress developer.
A year later I’m in ur shoe 😂
So what did you do…
I took a course with Brad Schiff, the dude is a genius with PHP and how Wordpress works...
I have used Wordpress when I hosted a blog and imorted all the contents from Blogger, although I have little knowledge about HTML but not other programming languages. Now I'm going to dive in into this as an alternative to make a pivot.
Hey Dorian, great vid. I currently know html, css at a basic level still wrapping my head around JS, if I had to jump onto Wordpress to perhaps freelance would you say it’s wise or Should I learn JS abit more then jump onto Wordpress?
There's all types of WordPress freelance work out there and some of those jobs don't require any coding at all. Knowing js won't hurt and better playing jobs might require it but you should still be able to find work with just knowing the basics.
@@DorianDevelops Thanks for the advice bro 👊🏻
Hey Dorian what knee injury are you suffering from?
I just had surgery roughly 1 week ago for a patella tendon rupture and ive had to stop learning to code for now (TOP, Self Taught), due to rest. Once i'm feeling better and can concentrate a bit more, I will pick up where I came from before my injury.
Stay Safe! :)
I had a meniscus repair, I honestly didn't expect it to be this bad. The first week was rough to say the least but now at week 4 I'm starting to walk around a little and hoping to be out of the brace in 2 weeks. Mine was a planned surgery, I've had issues with this knee for a while. Your injury sounds intense and I hope you're doing a ok. Just rest up and get back to it when you're feeling better. Good luck and thanks for watching!
I really don't understand where this whole "WordPress Developer" dichotomy came from where "the real devs" call anyone who works with WordPress a phony or not a real dev. WordPress is just a tool - like the browser itself! Just because the backend is all sorted for you, doesn't mean WordPress devs don't use JS, or jQuery, or React, or any of the other languages that "the real devs" use. I just don't get the need to put "WordPress Developer" in quote marks. It's ridiculous.
honestly the real devs are the people creating the technologies, we are just peasants using their tools haha
@@davidomar742 true. The real Engineering is the actual physical execution of code.
@@davidomar742 very true. We just consume the functions created by actuall engineers. Does it matter if we code to call the function or just use a GUI ? Both the same.
WordPress seems fun, but I feel like I will be stuck with making pages with WordPress instead of actually learning HTML/CSS. I want to build some pages with vanilla HTML/CSS before I start to use tools like this.
That's a great plan and I wish I would have focused a little more on the basics of html/css/js before I moved on to other things. Pick your path and stick with it, I honestly jumped around between technologies a bit too much when I was learning.
@@DorianDevelops Yeah. But I need to fight my own issues - mostly depression, procrastination, asperger and ADHD.
I avoided Wordpress as well, especially after my first experience with it in a web agency. You become a code/wordpress monkey . It's all about plugins plugins and more plugins. You don't learn code. You learn wordpress. And that's not what I wanted to do, especially being a junior dev. I felt like WP dumbed me down for than anything. I prefer do applications in JS or a JS framework. WP is for people who want to piss code and put projects out fast and easy, with as little code as possible and make quick money especially for freelancers.
@@remix2die4 This isn't accurate. I do custom WP theme sites as my job, and it's ALL code. You are only describing one kind of WP job/path.
Thanks for posting this video Dorian! I've been studying some HTML, CSS and PHP (plus a little JS) and am tired of having it just be study time I'm doing on the side. I want to do this as my job. Therefore, I am getting into Wordpress.
How did it go? I am wondering where to start
@user-hf1qm8hj6x it's going. I've had a few clients over the past year. Only 1 of them was very very profitable because it was a big client, but the headless Next.js Wordpress website was rejected by the CEO for purely bureaucratic reasons so I can't really showcase it as a major win. Fortunately me and my partner still got the $$$.
For now, I am currently still working in Wordpress and have a WooCommerce Elementor client, but it is not very profitable, but working hard to win my next big client and still grinding away on Upwork. We'll see what happens.
In the meantime, I have learned much more about UX/UI Design, Cross-device and cross-browser testing, Cybersecurity, Content Strategy, SEO, performance optimization, the Wordpress ecosystem, and the CMS market in general.
@@KevinLopez-rl6wq Nice job! I'm curious, how much work with WordPress development is just drag-and-drop and how much of it is actual coding? And what are your thoughts on the claims that WordPress is an insecure mess made of a bunch of spaghetti code that will give you very bad habits?
Hi Dorian!!!!!!! Hope you are well..
Can you help me Please, how can i post any HTML code on the source code..I only know on the front page.
Thank u
Hey Dorian! i posted on your last wordpress video. and i thought to try and learn it and make some side money with it while i'm learning to code. so i did some research and then tried to help my friend make a portfolio website for his architecture "buissnes" i discovered that i also have to learn design so also took abit of time to do that. and then i saw how much time it takes out of me and how long will it take till i will start making money out of it so i actually stopped with wordpress and got back to learning javascript just that this time i have to go abit back cause i didnt remember it all.
This is weird. Been learning web dev for a year now in my spare time. Mainly React and Next JS. I avoided WP like the plague and never used it. I wanted to do freelance work and originally planned to work in Next JS and Node but the logistics of getting clients hosting and managing the site plus the time spent building it were ridiculous.
I decided to learn WP a week ago and I'm loving it. I'm picking up the concepts quickly because of my previous experience and it is so much better for clients to work with.
hey man! we chat a few minutes? please?
Wordpress is King for freelance doesn't pay well for getting a job at a company
How you are learning wp?
@@laxmiprasanna4092 the Udemy course called unlocking the power with code. Its the most powerful WordPress course ever I was able to land my first job with that.

It’s a hard lesson that I learned with Siraj Raval, another youtuber believing that machine learning is something anyone can do, even something easy (when it’s not).
It’s important to not let this kind of people influence important decisions in our lives, they are not our friends, just people sharing their biased perspectives about certain topics.

I'd like to know what would be hard to do with WordPress.
Which theme would you recommend for an interpreter as a freelancer and If I would want my picture on the home page , thank you

@@DorianDevelops nah, man. I genuinely love your monitor.
My opinion: If your building on Wordpress you should use Dockerized Wordpress
Question is word press need hard coding like old days or little coding need?
Get well soon bro .
The problems with WordPress is that
A - making too customised is tough
B - Today's free plugin might become tomorrow's paid plugin. Today's supported plugin might become unsupported tommorrow.
C - sometimes really good stuffs on wordpress can be too costly and as a beginner you make website to make money, not pay money. So paying instead of making money as a not earning person sucks.
D - You don't learn anything. And sometimes you have to use custom coding anyways. So why not learn code in the first place ?
There maybe other problems as well which I didn't mentioned here.
Thank u so much I was thinking of learning WordPress
thank you so much.i think i mess up cuz i paid some $150 to learn webdesign not knowing that knowing that what i paid for is a wordpress class
Hey Dorian ! Should I learn html - css - JavaScript - react / in that order ?

you're genuine guy
Ok....i don't understand a thing here but here I am.... I'mma start learning all this now
These videos are so incredibly helpful
Thanks for watching glad that you're finding them helpful!

If WordPress can make such amazing sites, why is there a need to learn programming? Will it kill coding in the long run?
WordPress is not always the answer to any question. It’s true that it has 28% of websites, but it is not out of the box solution for every site. For example:
What if you need to have a specific functionality, that it’s not built-in in WordPress and none plugin supports that?Or there is a plugin, which you need to modify some part of the code?
You need to use programming languages like PHP and/or MySQL at Back-End and HTML, CSS and JS on Front-End.
There is no plugin for every requirement, trust me. My clients had needs that I have never imagined. It’s cool because it needs from me to make something new, especially for them. It caused that these websites are unique and I could be proud of them.
But it is true, that you don’t need to know how to coding if you know someone who knows that :)
I hope it helps! ❤
I think it’s really important to learn Wordpress. Like 30% of the internet is built off of Wordpress? So as a *web developer*….. for something that builds over a quarter of the internet, don’t you think you should learn Wordpress??? If you don’t thats fine more opportunity for me
I love your monitor
That is why your make this video nice plug man
How to learn all that wordpress functions?
In a good way is okay to use Wordpress but if you want to make some changes as you said, it's great if you learn how to code. So, in my opinion, I prefer to learn code first and then using another websites builder like Wordpress, Joomla, Wix, etc. and the frameworks too. Companies now, they asking you if you know how to learn to use Wordpress and also if you know how to code from 0 for they can hiring you. If you can programm by your own to make projects, it's okay. Hope you're doing well after you knee operation.
How did you learn to code? I was programming in the 80s and trying to figure out how to get into things.
80,000.00 plus a year is not bad especially with a skill you can free lance with and probably make another 100k plus a year.
Engineers who can't code + Designers who can't design = wordpress
Why would you learn an application instead of the "programming language' ?
Your voice is perfect . You should do Udemy courses.
Yep. Way better than Max.
2 years ago, he said don't learn WordPress
Don’t use Word Press. Why? Because when you’re building your site and then when it’s finished, WordPress is screwing with your website schema in the background all the time. My site is 4 years old and there is constant wreckage of lost footnotes, broken links, fonts breaking, media lost and on. WP never takes responsibility to fix any of it. Then they do not support your template choice after a couple years. Do you want to build your site again?! Their support commonly does not solve problems. It’s just a crap platform.
Wow
