Man, this is so good! Even after 22 years of playing, I’m still finding new things to learn so I can get better! Thanks Scott for all the amazing content you’re constantly putting out!
Started playing in February and have been gigging every Friday for the past 4 or so months. Been focusing so hard on my timing, but hard to do this SUPER focused training with a regular met, thanks for sharing, this is going to kick my rhythm into OVERDRIVE.
It's been months... well maybe years, actually, that I've been thinking I should try and find nice drum loops to develop my internal rhythm rather than playing on full tracks. Listening to the drum loops you guys gathered up almost forces me to grab my bass and play! Thank you for that. And I see the interface is quite ergonomic, with the play/pause button linked to the space bar. Great Job, SBL.
@@devinebass thanks even more for replying. I'm honored sir as I look up to you. Your fingering technique in playing those scales and runs look effortless. I have to learn that in this coming year.
Great app! Im a bit adhd so when I did just beat 4 i noticed i was slipping slightly ahead, which is interesting as our band often speeds up live. Thanks Scott!
During gaps in the beat I usually play dead notes to keep my timing solid, and that works pretty well. Even in songs that don't have dead notes, I'll put 'em in there so I stay locked in. I will definitely be getting this app, it look great. Thanks, great lesson as always
Really love this exercise!! 🔥👏🏼 And man..you made probably the best app for bass players’ practice! P.S.: the sound of this Furlanetto…ohhh, come on… 🔥🔥🔥😃
Thanks Scott. I've recently retired from music but still want to shed. Thanks so much for all you do for us. I'm going to get this SBL Groove Trainer right now. I'll let you know how I do.
Thank you Scott and co. for creating in 1 FREE app what I've needed 3 PAID apps to do before today. I've used techniques like this in teaching students and in self-practice...the fact that you made this available to all for free means they (my students) can now do this stuff at home with their phones (and you've made it available for every conceivable platform!). You've done an amazing service for Music education worldwide with this app, so once again THANK YOU!
I downloaded this metronome when I got the email notice and been using since. Very nice and been using that sequence as well. Have to keep that internal metronome going. When I started playing i had a very cheesy digital metronome and would sleep with my earbuds plugged in and everyday was a different timing. 👍🏼
GREAT app! Another is Live BPM, especially for a group setting. I host an acoustic jam and it just runs in the background , but you can see immediately as soon as someone starts to rush. Thanks Scott - just saved the page to my favorites and will download the app
Back in the days we were using a looped tape with a single clap recorded, so the period between two claps would vary between about 5 and 15 seconds depending on a tape speed. It was an extremely difficult exercise. And, to complicate things even more, we would sometimes mute the sound for a several turns while playing and turn it back on to see how devastating the result would be :)
I want to say in the most humble way possible, this was easy for me on the first try - but I have so so much more to learn on bass!!! For real. I'm psyched I have decent time but that's not the whole picture.
Something that surprised me was when I was playing in a popular dance band back in the 80's, if the bass stopped it would stop the dance floor every time. This was when nady first came out with wireless systems for guitars and I had to have one. Well when it quits there is no warning, it just stopped transmitting. If the Bass stops so will a 300 person dance floor....
That's why when your outside a club or pub and the bass is pumping inside, people feel it and there's a vibe. Without it, as you mentioned, it's like loosing your pulse.
This reminds me of when I started learning reggae/Police/Sting bass lines. It’s actually all about learning to trust yourself. One Drop type drums are basically saying “Bass…it’s up to you now”
incredible the sbl application entered my head thank you thank you you are the best ... just for that jesto I will become a member thank you very much scott
Nice lesson! Learned a similar one from Master Kai. Just fired up the metronome, and there's another monster of an exercise you can do with it. What you do is first go through the subtractive exercise shown here, but then, switch to 5/4, and first use just the first two pulses, but play it in 4/4, and see if you are nailing each of the beats, as it will cycle through them. Then set it to a single pulse and do the same. It will help you nail each of your beats, and build your internal sense of time even further. You can do this in signatures other than 4/4 as well.
Scott and co. if you're reading this: add a "count off" feature to the speed training section. You can get around this by tell it to loop every 5 bars for a 4 bar groove (for example), but that also requires you to pause for a bar with every loop. You might want that some days, you might not on others. Would make it more flexible. Otherwise this is a godsend of a training tool!
That is killer! I just gave the app a quick listen after downloading it and that is totally going to take my playing next level.. Thanks for sharing Scott…Legend!
I would like to see more exercises on things such as the metronome and groove trainer. Is there a maybe course on the academy with more stuff like this? I've had metronomes for many years since I was taking piano as a child and never got much out of them (mostly collected dust). Just mainly used them to keep up the beat. Lately, I've been turned on to how to really use them and just keep getting more and more amazed how useful they are.
There's absolutely a course in the SBL membership focused on lot's this stuff... this lesson is only scratching the surface. Just login and search 'time and groove' and you'll find it. I'm the tutor for the course... Scott :)
Great stuff as usual, man! When you and Ian talked on the podcast about someone just focusing on a simple groove before performing, I made note and added it to my daily routine.
This is something I have added to my practice. It wasn't hard to get used to it since I have played drums before. Don't get me wrong. Once the 1 and the 3 dropped out, I had to start over a few times 😂 Awesome tip. Thanks
Hi Scott, the trainer's a great tool! don't know if you're still checking this thread, but reggae is my thing and I didn't see a reggae drum loop on your groove trainer. Can you either add one, or suggest a loop that'll work for a reggae beat?
In highschool I took orchestral band and was given many jazz pieces in that class on top of classical pieces, and I took a class where we wrote and performed our own music. In those classes my teacher had remarked that I was the reason we stayed in time because I was so devoted to maintain a rythym, and the drummers wanted to speed up but I refused to let them lead 😂😂. I was and still do practice with a metronome, usually for an hour or so every week. I dislike it, just like chords and scales, anything with theory I dislike practicing for more than 30 minutes or so but it helps immensely so I do it. Still working on my ear as I struggle to listen and repeat melody or harmony but the rythym is very easy. One day I will no longer use tabs, notation, or chords charts but today is not that day
Keeping just the 2nd or 3rd beat is savage on me, that's too much to handle 8-0. This will be THE exercise for the rest of my life, nice effort Scott with the app, a VST would be still more nice. F
I lack confidence in my timing (I think it sucks, but drummers have complemented me???). I have felt this way for my 40+ of playing. I keep telling myself that I need to work on it and have seen Scott's exercises before.
Good lesson, great bass and tone. At first glance, didn't think you had your glove on. As well as use a metronome, learn how to count. And those things on the side of your head, ears, learn how to use them. Combine that with the Nome and your internal timing will take you to the next level where you'll just hear it with out thinking. Also if you have the time, learn how to read, the time invested will reap rewards. You get to a stage where you can see it, feel it and isn't as hard as you might think. Much better than trying the short cut, with tabs etc. Your ears are the most important tool in the shed. Merry Xmas. Cheers 🍺
This is a great app! I have it on my phone. My humble request: please consider making it compatible with Intel Macs? I have a brand new macbook pro, bought this year before M1 pros released, so I can't download your desktop app. Sad lol
I downloaded your excellent since its debut. I think it is the best along with TimeGuru. I would ask you if it si possible to add a feature to change drum patterns speed. Thank you so much!
Great addition to the website, dude! Maybe expand the metronome grid to 32 or 64. See how good your internal time is with 1 out of 64 beats being heard.
The app has a feature under the Rhythm part of the training settings where you can select how many bars you want on and off as well as select if you want to randomize this. If you don't randomize it you can have do things like like play 2 bars on and 2 bars off. It has a maximum of up to 10 bars on/off. So between selecting which beats in the bar you want to play and the on/off feature there are many ways to relax the click dependency and check your timing. I have started using it for walking bass lines by choosing to click on beats 2 and 4 and then doing things like 4 bars on followed by 4 bars off (so you get the entire A section of a typical 32 bar AABA jazz song. Try doing this on a ballad played at 60bpm.
Just downloaded, went straight to the Mark Giuliana loops, and the very first one (“Looms Large”) has a sloppy loop point. Listen to it. Its pretty jarring. Ironic since the app is supposed to train groove.
My time is decent enough at 2 clicks, but drop down to one and I have a harder time placing the right note on the 4th...it always feels like it should be the 1st!
Moving your body along helps a lot in keeping time
100%!
Man, this is so good! Even after 22 years of playing, I’m still finding new things to learn so I can get better! Thanks Scott for all the amazing content you’re constantly putting out!

You'll say it again 22 years from now.

Such a simple and fantastic practice technique. I’m going to use this for drums as well.
