I remember this unfortunate incident very vividly. I still remember my Grandfather talking on the phone multiple times day to Gavin Cato's parents saying he would help them get justice. I could hear them both crying through the phone. I cried watching this, not only because it brings back memories of me watching this play out as a 14 year old teenager..but I saw my Grandfather's name in the newspaper article shown, and a clip of him speaking at Gavin's funeral. Next week will be 22 years he's been gone. On my 15th birthday, I went to court with my grandfather for the Lymeric Nelson trial. Prior to going to court that day, Lymeric's lawyer purchased me a beautiful gold chain from the expensive jewelry store in Downtown Brooklyn, for my birthday. So many memories involving this case..Gavin story will always be so dear to me. He and Yankel were so innocent. Thank you Jose for continuing to keep their names alive. ⚘️

I lived 3 blocks away from this tragic accident. The Jewish ambulance that arrived first tended to the driver ( who was indeed intoxicated) and not seriously injured. Instead of tending to the children who were the victims and were seriuosly injured. The driver should have definitely been charge for driving under the influence that led to the death of a person and injuring another. The driver didn't flee the seen of the accident. His car stayed where the accident happened. The children were pinned underneath the car, when the crowd arupted. The Jewish ambulance took the driver for his safety from the crowd. A breath alcohol test was done after the crash and determined there was no alcohol in his system as shown in court papers and documented several times. His blood alchohol level was 0.00. A reading of 0.10 was legally drunk at the time. Not drunk. However, Lemrick Nelson who stabbed Yankel Rosenbaum, said he was drunk when he stabbed him. He said that in court. I'm aware he didn't flee the scene. Never said he did. I said he wouldn't face charges for fleeing because people felt he should, and that was a real possible charge, hence the news articles included. I had just came to this country from Trinidad. My birthday is August 19th and we flew up the 21st and settled in Prospect Heights which is literally blocks from Crown Heights. Being 8 years old at the time, in a new country, new city, this was such a scary, surreal & unsafe time. I remember this story like it was yesterday 😢😢 RIP Gavin.
New York was like a completely different city back then. If some of you were zapped into NY back then you’d be shocked how wild it felt. Everyone would be outside, all day long, nothing like the amount of ppl you see out n about in the summer now, 3 times more ppl..especially kids..kids hardly play outside nowadays, but back then dozens would on the streets. In the 90s there were more riots than in the last 50 years altogether. And there were a lot of corrupt policemen, which caused some riots too. When there was an injustice there were rarely peaceful protests, it was meant to be peaceful but things got crazy real quick. Something I remember about the Yusef Hawkins story were the Italian dudes saying, “If I had a black girlfriend they’d definitely jump me in her neighborhood, if me and my friends were to go hangout in a Black neighborhood you think we would be safe?” Back then he was 100 percent correct. Some hoods were backwards like that. NY is still dangerous today but back then I think back then was a bit more than today. Anyway RIP Gavin and Yankel ❤
The compassion, in which you provide details to illustrate the funeral scene of Gavin''s mother sobbing, moved me to tears. Thank you for sharing this story. 💐💐💐💐💐💐 💐💐💐💐💐💐
It’s just so sad! Paused at 24:53 as both Gavin and Yankels images are on the screen to know these two, stranger to each other in life, are forever joined in death. Also, important to note, not much has changed with how social justice and human rights remains 31 years later. RIP to these innocent victims!
I have relatives that lives in Brooklyn. They lived down the street from Gavin and his family. Very tragic on what happened to Gavin. Thank you for sharing his story. RIP Gavin Cato

Sure did. Jewish people helped get Dinkins elected too and after Crown Heights it was a wrap. Giuliani kept saying "pogram" and used the riot to get elected. He even started the police riot on city hall by hooking up with the police union. Giuliani is a damn devil
Easy for them to charge ppl for the stabbing and riot...as they should. But couldn't charge the driver eith fleeing scene of an accident? Some JUSTICE...smfh

I just love your voice and the way you tell these stories. So much passion and respect ! I am learning so much about the new place that I now call home, new york. God bless ❤
Once again, Jose... You told us of this story, with such respect and dignity. I can't believe that I was never aware of this ever happening. 2 innocent lives lost. A city/neighborhood ripped apart. I, as a Mom of a bi racial child, (she's 36 years old, and fortunately, she, never had any problems. I, on the other hand, was told that I would have many issues raising a child that was half black and half Caucasian. I NEVER had issues!). THOSE individuals were entirely wrong! Anyway, my point is, I don't think, (at least in my lifetime), will ever see the discrimination and hatred that this world still brings. We've see a lot of progress, but this needs to end. No matter what race or religion we are, we ALL bleed the same color. I don't get it. I don't understand it. And... I never will. Rest in Heaven to this little boy and that young man. I don't want to use the "cliche", that they were in the wrong place, at the wrong time.... But, unfortunately they were... Thank you, Jose... For everything you do. I, and alot of others, appreciate it very much. (Going to watch the Law and order episode), right now that you referred to. 😢

All of us marginalized people/global majority are trying to overcome so much systemic oppression within our own communities sometimes we lose sight of each other’s griefs. An innocent child and an innocent man, along with their loved ones didn’t receive any solace even after other people took matters into their own hands. It unnecessarily escalated things. We need to be better. We need to do better. Collectively! Rest In Peace Gavin and Yankle 💐🕊️

Ok but how is it this man caused the entire situation and offset a series of events and got off Scott free not only murder but the injuries caused to poor baby girl. SMFH!! He also fled the country clearly aided by multiple people couldn’t he be charged for that ??!!! That makes me so angry
Im not from New York City or Brooklyn but from the City of Yonkers in Weschester County and I was 11 years old in (1991) . As a New Yorker I remember when this happened in the summer of (1991). I actuly went to the neighborhood where thos happened in Crown Hieghts Brooklyn in June/06/2017 visit the New York City , Crown Hieghts Public Libary and President street and 8'Th Avenue where this happened then. Into history stuff especially New York City history stuff.❤❤❤ R.I.P. to all thosed involed in the Crowne Hieghts riots of summer (1991). Its kind of like the South Central Riots in Los Angeles riots of April of (1992) . This remonds me of the riots of Bedford Styvesant Brooklyn of "Sal's Famous Pizzaria " in the Summer or (1989) movie by director Spike Lee " Do The Right Thing " then I even went to that neighborhood on 09/25/2018 a block party to tribute the birthday of and life of the late R.I.P. Mr. Micheal Jackson then.❤
I can’t speak for Gavin’s family. But I would feel horrible if an innocent man was beat to death in the name of my child’s death. Like it would add to the pain.

Remember this well was living not to far from the incident it was a CRAZY time....thank u bro for sharing this video....and rip 🙏 to the ones that lost there lives.....my condolences to the familys.
Personally, what happened to Gavin was not some tragic accident but a very poor choice of someone driving behind the wheel. Trying to catch up to the other cars is one thing but having the common sense that pedestrians all around should be apparent. That man was reckless and his actions destroyed lives. Rosenbaum's murder was so tragic and senseless. What also pisses me off is the rioters. Maybe some were legitimately angry but I feel like others used the tragedy as an excuse to cause chaos and loot. A powerful lesson from these tragedies is how important it is to think before you act. The driver should've thought about how he was driving instead of speeding, the ones who killed Rosenbaum should've thought how senseless it was to kill him when he had nothing to do with the situation and the riots thinking how selfish they are by destroying the neighborhood.
I understand that this was a tragic situation all around and there was no excuse for that little man’s death nor the other man’s death but audacity of the rioters was so absolutely not needed! I’m sure the families appreciate the love and respect you show them with the love and kindness you show them with how you represent thier story❤
The driver should have been charged with fleeing the scene and reckless driving. This blind justice of the scale was unbalanced ⚖️. May the 2 innocent victims rest in peace 🕊️

Born and raised in BK, this was truly a horrible time for my borough. Amongst many others.
Gavin would've been my age today. RIP young fella
Mine too! This is crazy. Smh
❤😢🙏🏾
The compassion, in which you provide details to illustrate the funeral scene of Gavin''s mother sobbing, moved me to tears.
Thank you for sharing this story.
💐💐💐💐💐💐
💐💐💐💐💐💐
It’s just so sad! Paused at 24:53 as both Gavin and Yankels images are on the screen to know these two, stranger to each other in life, are forever joined in death. Also, important to note, not much has changed with how social justice and human rights remains 31 years later. RIP to these innocent victims!
Well said I agree with you 100%.
I’m not American but I’ve just found your channel and the link at you portray these stories made me sub straight away.
Amazing channel .
I have relatives that lives in Brooklyn. They lived down the street from Gavin and his family. Very tragic on what happened to Gavin. Thank you for sharing his story. RIP Gavin Cato
These types of events will never stop if we can’t get past our hatred of others. We need to celebrate our differences! So much senseless pain and hurt.
This is tragic! So sad! May they both rest in peace 🕊️ I'm thankful Angela wasn't killed and what a horrible thing to see and go through at her age. ✌🏼
The riot did Dinkins in, and paved the road for Giuliani.
Interesting observation.
Sure did. Jewish people helped get Dinkins elected too and after Crown Heights it was a wrap. Giuliani kept saying "pogram" and used the riot to get elected. He even started the police riot on city hall by hooking up with the police union. Giuliani is a damn devil
So very sad and tragic such needless deaths, thank you for remembering these poor souls 🙏👏👏👏👏
Definitely 1 of the best channels on RUclips. Thank you
Thank you for that!
Easy for them to charge ppl for the stabbing and riot...as they should. But couldn't charge the driver eith fleeing scene of an accident? Some JUSTICE...smfh
Thanks for the upload😢RIP😔😔😔
New to your channel and I’m loving all these videos especially being a New Yorker Never knew about alot of these stories thank you so much for these 🙏🏾🙏🏾 rest in peace to the families
I just love your voice and the way you tell these stories. So much passion and respect ! I am learning so much about the new place that I now call home, new york. God bless ❤
Thank you for that. I appreciate the kind words!
I remember this incident. I also remember Bensonhurst and Howard Beach. Those were some terrible times in NYC..
Yeah, those damn greasy wops 😤
I went to Gavin's funeral. He lived a few blocks away from me. R.i.p 😢
Thanks Bro.. You Videos Are Outstanding.. My Mom Told Me About This Story In Nyc.. We Lived In Jersey City Nj..
28:35 my favorite moment of this video. The dads were able to build a friendship from a tragic event. ❤
Great video Jose, you handle this case and the topic of racial tensions with great care and thought. 🙏
Good evening !! Thank you for this video, appreciate your compassion for these victims 💓. Condolences an prayers for the family. 🕊️R.i.p Gavin 😔🙏
Thank you for watching! I appreciate the kind words.
@@EvilIntentionsI agree. I love how you are able to tell the stories no matter how brutal and show compassion and respect to both the family and the victims. I wish there were more folks with your compassion this world would be much better. ❤
I remember when this happened. I remember that really hot summer. I started 9th grade a couple weeks later and we spoke about it in social studies. It was an uneasy time. Thanks for covering this.
I was born in crown heights, raised in east Flatbush and coney island.... I remember this incident vividly. I was 17yrs old that summer. The summer I met my first love. So many emotions during that time in Brooklyn as a teenager. I remember reading about Gavin and Yankel losing their young lives senselessly. RIP to both of them🌹some of us never forgot.
Idk why this channel doesn't have at least 1 million subs. It absolutely should. This is the best channel on RUclips. The way you give respect when you make these videos...❤
❤❤❤love your voice and how you tell the stories 😊you need to be on the big screen
I was 9 at the time. I didn’t hear about it. And never learned what happened. These videos help me.
I will tune in 🙏🏾 this channel journalist is compassionate.
I never heard of this story. Thank you.
I grew up in Brooklyn (Flatbush) and my grandparents worked at pa 221 by chance I ended up working with his sister (Lyndica) later on .. i vividly remember this story .. very sad time in Brooklyn... thank you for covering it so well !!
You cover these tragedies with such compassion and respect. God bless yoh always young man
Nice I w@s waiting for your video for Sunday .
Another amazing well put together video 🙏🏽
An amazing job again compadre, from FL, nothing but love. Smooth voice tells these stories with compassion. Thank you !
I wonder if the hospital intentionally let the Jewish man bleed out? How could the miss an entire stab wound bleeding? Not possible
Doubt it they had a jewish hospital over there
Thank you for this new perspective, l didn’t realize another child was involved. I never forget this case. I just came to America a few days later after the incident. I was so bewildered at the time, such a sad situation all the way around. RIP to Gavin and Yankel and l hope their families including Angela found some peace 🕊️🙏🏽
I STILL haven’t been able to bring myself to watch your last video. I DO want to hear the victim’s story, it’s just too hard for me not to get upset & have thoughts that aren’t normal, but I can’t help not wanting to hurt someone who can hurt a child! I’m just going to keep saying prayers that something will change & innocent children will no longer get hurt &/or killed by POS’s!! Thank You for ALL you do!
Damn. We need to revisit this periodically
It actually took me longer to get through this video than it’s ever took me on any other of your videos idk if it’s cause I live in Brooklyn (Flatbush) but chill in crown heights and im from Guyanese and I’ve seen/see the divide in the communities till this day !!!! I was born in 1991 so this I never heard of this story till now but it’s heartbreaking fr
Great documentation and story telling. Very sad case.
Ok but how is it this man caused the entire situation and offset a series of events and got off Scott free not only murder but the injuries caused to poor baby girl. SMFH!! He also fled the country clearly aided by multiple people couldn’t he be charged for that ??!!! That makes me so angry
hello my man, from Scotland...respect
Mr. Micheal Jackson then.❤
Love your work and how you give a voice to the innocent victims ❤
I can’t speak for Gavin’s family. But I would feel horrible if an innocent man was beat to death in the name of my child’s death. Like it would add to the pain.
Old school Brooklyn was crazy
Imagine sending ur baby off with their father to the states for a better life and get the news that ur son was now gone 😖😓
I remember this case back then. I was 13 years old. That is so messed up the driver that killed Gavin Cato did not get charged for this 😭😡
Thank you for sharing an awesome yet sad story. Aloha!
Again I say, how you bring the untold stories to life with humility, understanding, and empathy. Thank you Jose for what you do and who you are, as well as the important role you take on behalf of the victims and their families...❤
Remember this well was living not to far from the incident it was a CRAZY time....thank u bro for sharing this video....and rip 🙏 to the ones that lost there lives.....my condolences to the familys.
No Words Just Tears ❤
Animals
Wouldn't have happened if the guy who ran Gavin Cato down had been tried and convicted. Unfortunately Yankel was a scapegoat. He was sacrificed.
I remember this day. I was 14 years old at the time. This bought so many memories. Rest in peace to both ❤🙏🏽
I understand that this was a tragic situation all around and there was no excuse for that little man’s death nor the other man’s death but audacity of the rioters was so absolutely not needed! I’m sure the families appreciate the love and respect you show them with the love and kindness you show them with how you represent thier story❤
I remember the Law & Order, kinda neat it was filmed so close to you, so so sad how the episode came aboit
Yeah, it was crazy. They're always filming in the area till this day, but this was a crazy scene.
This was very well done. I admire your work. Thank you.
