  • This week we review and install the popular Ford Duraspark 2 upgrade on our 1965 Mustang hardtop. Of course this upgrade will work on Cougar, Falcon, Comet, Fairlane Torino, Montego and F100 as well. And we show you what to do if your distributor is stuck in the bore as well as how to neatly wire the National Parts Depot Ford Duraspark 2 harness into the chassis. We also show you a quick way to determine if your cars resistor wire or ballast resistor is working or installed.

    The rotor will go clockwise major. You'll have to kind of bump the oil pump drive shaft a bit to get it to seat.

    Use the V8 box just to be sure. We kept our spark plugs at the stock gap and they seem to be doing fine. BUT you can open them up. Some folks recommend doing that. We'll be keeping an eye on ours as we tune in the 302.

    TheNeumeister92, they are. We apologize for not make that more clear during the episode. Thanks for bringing it up so we could clarify. Those connectors we used are available at most home improvement centers in the trailer section or at a trailer supply.

    Titan, actually those are getting harder to find. We hit our local Pull-a-Part frequently and Granadas are few and far between. However, there are kits out there like the one form Rod and Custom Motorsports that use 11" rotors and will bolt right on to your drum brake spindle. And best of all, it runs around $400 for the set with all new parts!

    Good video guys. Covers some thing that alot of people just dont know when doing this upgrade.
    I generally use some assembly lube on the gear of the dizzy and the orings because it doesnt drip all over.

    There was a lot of information on the web, much of it confusing. The harness and our guide make this an easy thing to do...well unless your distributor gets stuck in the bore...

    Thanks for posting this. My 302 has all new ignition parts and is waiting on me to replace the wiring for those parts. This vid will be most helpful.

    My Msd ignition box when out on me while driving, and right now I can't afford a new one for $220 so I went with the duraspark ignition module.
    I couldn't figure out the wiring so I googled it and found this video, My 66 mustang is all wired up and running again, Thanks for posting.

      I have a '90 5.0 engine that's been converted from fuel injection to carburetor, the distributor is stock from a '85 mustang 5.0, I think it was the last year of the carbureted Mustang. The distributor was only about 50 or 60 bucks, new.

    It did, and it was functioning well, but we wanted to show an alternative to stock That Pertronix is now serving duty in another 302.

    Thanks for watching Shannon. The DUI will install much like this accept the coil is on the cap. However we will look into doing a DUI.

    Should. Booster should not make any difference. You might need a new master cylinder brake lines and proportioning valve. It will also depend on application. Check with Rod And Custom Motorsports and see what they require.

    Wow, neat. Do you think it would work with my brake booster? I just replaced it and it seems like an awful waste to have to go buy another. Some kits seem to require a new break booster and some other weird parts, specifically the SSBC conversion kits. I just want modern brakes.

    those connectors were trailer tail light extensions cut in half weren't they? they are identical to what i used when i wired in new hid head lights on my 65. i also wanted to have a plug.

    Duraspark II is supposed to make more electricity. So you can open your plugs wider. How far open should you open your plugs?

    AutoRestoMod, i appreciate what you guys are doing, and your info has been very helpful, thus far, i had a question tho. you were saying that when the ignition is on and not running, the coil should be getting between 6 and 7 volts, mine is getting 7.5 and what my question is, is the voltage supposed to be any higher while the vehicle is running, and the reason for my question is because i keep going through ignition coils ( the orignial plus two direct replacement coils ) while running its getting 10 volts to the coil and at about 1500 to 2000 rpms it goes up to 12+ volts. thanks in advance

      Lee, we'd check the wiring to make sure that you either still have the original resistor wire or a ballast resistor in the system. The coil is burning out due to a hotter than needed spark. If you are running a resistor wire, remove it an install a straight wire from the ignition switch to a ballast resistor and see if that drops the voltage to the coil.

      Okay, thanks also I neglected to mention that the chassis and drivetrains is an 81 f150 but the cab is 84 with a computer controlled ignition for six cylinder, my guess was that it didn't have one to begin with, so I was just gonna put a resister block from a Chrysler inline to the coil, but I will also double check the wiring under the dash. Thanks again for y'alls help.

      Great video! Looking to upgrade my i6 with DS2. Do I need to bypass the pink resistor wire in order to get the coil a full 12v?

    I hope you guys still monitor comments on this older video. The American Autowire harness I received from NPD has four non connecter wires, red and white as you addressed in the video, yellow for the Tach. This leaves a pink wire. The schematic shows the pink wire to the coil side of the ballast resistor. If I am still running the stock resistor wire instead the ballast resistor the pink wire connects to the resistor wire? If so what if so do I still run the red wire to the harnesses red/green wire?

      The ballast resistor replaces the pink wire.

      @@AutoRestoMod Thanks, the pink wire in question (shown in the schematic that came with harness you recommend) is going from ballast resistor to coil. The wire you mentioned to that is replaced by the ballast resistor is the resistor wire in the dash. I guess you did not understand my question.

    Great video wish I would have seen it sooner! I am also doing a duraspark swap on my 83 bronco with a 351, can anyone tell me more about the vacuum advance on the distributor? Is it necessary? It didn't look like there was a hose on the vacuum in the video. My truck idles fine but feels hesitant when taking off from a stop i'm not sure if that vacuum is affecting the timing to cause it. I also put on an aftermarket Holley carb and just want to make sure everything is working together like it should.

      We recommend vacuum advance on street engines, so hook it up. Make sure it goes to ported vacuum on the Holley. The hesitation could be carburetor related; possiblt an accelerator pump issues. We have a "beginner" video on tuning Holley carbs. ruclips.net/video/bOJki5u5VdQ/видео.html

    Can't you just disconnect the brown wire from the solenoid and run the white wire over to the post where the brown wire was connected? Leaving the brown wire disconnected.

    Hopefully you still monitor the comments on this video, but I have an issue that hopefully I can get some input from you guys. I have a 66 Mustang with a 351 Cleveland that has a Duraspark 2 distributor hooked up to a MSD 6AL box. So right now I have a problem where if the engine is running at a RPM above idle, for example with the choke engaged or I hit the gas, its making an awful non smooth sound at each revolution, I guess would be the best way to describe it. I’m not really sure what knocking, pinging, detonation, or spark knock sounds like but I was wondering if that can be the sound that I’m hearing. My exhaust is kinda on the loud side since my engine is slightly beefed up and has 3 inch pipes w/ flow masters. So its a bit hard to compare the sound in RUclips videos, plus video doesn’t give it justice. Anyways I was wondering if its a timing issue I’m having? I haven’t really looked into yet, as far as inside the distributor or what the timing is currently at. I don’t really drive it took much or at all but the last time I drove it on the street which was about 3 years ago, timing was fine. And if it is timing issue, how does timing get off if it hasn’t really been operated? Can it be cap n rotor, vacuum advance issue like the springs being stuck?
    A little history since I last drove it on the street. I had fuel getting into the oil pan, which I thought was the fuel pump went bad. But after several fuel pumps, I believe I discovered that the power valve on the Holley double pumper I had was bad, and allowing fuel to just dump. Anyways I replaced the power valve, meter block seal, and float bowl seal and started up and ran, at idle, with that repair. After that , is when I noticed the current issue I’m having when I tried driving it around the block or even every time I move it from the garage to driveway. Sorry for the long post, LOL. Hopefully I could get some input. Thanks

      @@AutoRestoMod so I purchased everything for a 85 mustang from OREILLYS, what year coil would purchase? I know on the video the coil part # matches the coil I purchased for the 66 mustang.

    I came to your video because I have a Ford 300 industrial motor that doesn't use a firewall solenoid. The solenoid is on the starter. This video was useless for me because I was unable to determine where each wire was to be placed. I was looking for a video that says "connect white wire to this location and red wire to this location and so on"...It would have been nice if you would have gone through color by color for those of use that are having to make our own wiring harness...didn't get that information from your video and still lost.

      No way to do what you are asking bud. Ford changed colors on wires on the Duraspark at least once that I know of. This set up us an over the counter unit. It is why we harp on getting a wiring harness diagram for your truck.

    instead of guessing on the distributor timing and the orientation of the rotor "button" as you call it, why dont you take 2 extra minutes to set the motor at tdc and do it properly?

      Mike, good point. And that is a valid solution to the problem. In reality, there is no "guessing" and our way is a fast method for arriving at your solution. But we agree that your idea is an excellent one!

      its guessing, when you have people who are watching your videos to learn, and might not notice it being a tooth off, and think they did everything right. now they have no solid reference to check it too when they start the car and it runs like crap. next stop, expensive repair bill for a simple issue.

      Mike Miller Well MIke we've done it this way for years and so far, as long as the line on the distributor and the electrode on the rotor line up, they all start fine. As we said your solution is valid.

      i got a 71 f100 truck , 302 3sp auto and its got the duraspark [blue] box and trying to wire it correctly , it was already converted before i bought the truck , but it wasent correctly done .

      i have all the wires that go to the distributor correct , im trying to figure out the red/white wires , i have the red going to the brown that runs to the Ing post on the solenoid , and the white wire is not hooked up at all , and it seems to run just fine and volts to coil seem to be about 9v while running , i know this is not correct tho and want to wire it correct , and also know what the white wire is used for.

      the Ing post on the solenoid does nothing but make the connection for the wires , there is no power going threw the solenoid to power the Ign post so whats the point in hooking up the white wire the the brown that connects to that Ign post

    Some more Tips to remove a stuck distributor on an American car:
    if it's a points style like the one here, remove the rotor, and spray penetrating catalyst down the center opening where the wick is located. This is a lube point on the distributor and a service that is rarely ever performed. This frees it up a good portion of the time. Cranking the engine with the hold down bolt removed will also lodge it out. Using an engine hoist with a chain carefully wrapped around the housing will pop it off too. Anybody know anymore?

    What parts should I order to do this?
