Madonna was really feeling herself during this performance... as was Oprah. _Ray of Light_ was her first solo musical project following the _Evita_ film and soundtrack, and it really showed in her vocal abilities.
In one of her interviews from that era she said she has the joy of living. I feel that joy is visible in this performance in every way; she’s all smiles, looks so relaxed carefree and I really feel the joy is is affecting her voice too. I am glad you are visiting her live performances. She is such a versatile artis on stage and it’s great to co-watch these performances with someone who hasn’t yet seen them.

I think this is one of the only times she sang ROL live in this key. On the Drowned World tour and other subsequent live performances she sings it in a lower key. The flip side of this performance is the VMA performance of Ray of Light in '98 when Lenny Kravitz played guitar - vocals are off throughout. But I remember taping this Oprah special and I watch the ROL performance to death!

Such a nice surprise to see today. Love your Madonna performance reactions. When Madonna made Evita in 1996 she began vocal training with one of the top vocal coaches in the world. She discovered a different part of her range. The singing is almost operatic. I think I remember Madonna saying that she laughed because for her to go that high in her vocal range made her laugh (could be wrong about that). Yes the entire point of this performance was to do a very basic performance where she just focused on the vocals as she was known for the big production performances. Interesting thoughts regarding Taylor Swift. Taylor said that the 1989 album was inspired by songs like Like A Prayer and other 80s songs. When Madonna performed Living for Love at the Grammys in 2015 Taylor was singing and dancing in the front row. She loves Madonna

I’ve watched this epic live performance a million times and I’m still blown away every time. Her look her sound her AMAZING vocal performance 💯 it was like a total reset for her as an artist. This was the era after Evita which was another major milestone for her and of course the birth of her first child.
Omg haven’t seen this performance in a long time and wow this is a great example of Madonna’s strength as a performer. She can just walk onto a stage and captivate and energize an audience! It’s like she puts a spell on you it’s natural and casual at the same time and you can’t look away! Def watch her 2015 Grammy performance of living for love I always thought that was among her best especially in more recent years. It’s a different vibe than this of course it’s more stage art and whatnot but she still is able to pull off that natural and casual vibe despite all the theatrics. It’s really what makes her stand on her own. Flawless stage presence!
I think Lola, her daughter, came to fill the emptiness she experienced growing up without a mother. She definitely matured (a lot) through these few years, she already was a super star but I would say after ROL, she became the legend she is today. Loved your reaction, as usual 🤟
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS. I LIVE FOR THIS PERFORMANCE. You gotta understand: Madonna was hitting 40 YO, bringing a whole new sound (Electronica) to American mainstream, in a moment in music where women were considered old at the age of 29 ("old" as in, radio will not play you anymore so you better retire) and also Madonna was representing women who became mothers for the first time later in life (this is very common today but back in the 90s it was not as much) so she was back with her first born daughter, and just rocking the stage with her post-Evita well-trained voice, just effortlessly SLAYING on live TV. Just amazing. And what can I say about the song? I mean, fucking anthem.
Also babe, look for the performances and type "4k" next to it, and they'll have been remastered to the best quality and it won't look blurry, and it'll sound better :)
Oh Beth I’ve been sooo looking forward to this reaction 😊. When you said dam I’m like yeah😂. Not gonna lie I’ve rewatched some of your Madonna reactions they are always so insightful and fun
This performance and song for sure are so good that people don't have choices but dance it away like there's nothing more to happen on earth. It seems like Madonna was literally brainwashing the audience. And this is a big conquer for her, because of the constant criticism after Erotica's era. We are all Oprahs at this point 😂😂. Madonna is so versatile that she has a performance of Hung Up as a mashup with Feel Good Inc (Gorillaz). These songs seems the same when put together. It's awesome! Hugs Beth! Anxious for next Madonna's step journey ❤

That Oprah studio at 4pm was THE rave for soccer moms visiting Chicago. You have no idea. Lol. But honestly that was a pretty rad performance. And Oprah could get her demographic worked up to a fever pitch like no other. Also fun fact; she got very thin out of nowhere in 2004.
Oh shit! I agree with you 100% about Madonna and Taylor. Back when Lady Gaga was really big and everyone was saying she's the next Madonna...I thought nope, if anyone has the full Madonna package, it's no doubt Taylor Swift.
Taylor and Madonna are both great, but I do think they are very very different performers. Taylor, I think, is, overall, more warm in her performances, and would miss a step to hit the right note. Madonna dances more (you’ll see this in other, more choreographed numbers, this one isn’t really one of them) and has more of that “look at me now” vibe (although is sometimes warm), and would be more willing to miss a vocal note than to miss a dance step.
This performance overwhelms me with joy. Everyone looks like they’re having so much fun. The millennial optimism was too much. You should definitely watch the music video. All of them from this album though.
On that same day, she performed Little Star, voice and piano. It’s a pity you didn’t react; I’m sure you would have been impressed. But you’ll be even more impressed by the performance of Live to Tell on the Confessions Tour. It has everything: art, flawless vocals, and a socially impactful and relevant message.
Madonna's best performance of Ray of Light! I love that you compare her to Taylor - I think Madonna is a better vocalist, but both of them have received the same criticism regarding their live vocals. In the end it doesn't matter, they're both great, and one doesn't cancel out the other... so everyone chill lol
Yes!! I too get Happy to see another Madonna reaction 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. Next should be her live performance of “Music” Grammy Awards 2001 with those Famous Squats that went viral this past year on TikTok
If you want to watch performances where Madonna's voice is in the foreground, and not the production of the song or the instrumental of the track or whatever, then you should watch these performances: Fever (Live at The Arsenio Hall Show 1993) The Power of Goodbye (Live at the VH1 Fashion Awards 1998) Take a Bow (Live at the American Music Awards 1995)
My favourite live performances that I hope you would react to: 1. Ellen Show - Madonna's Joan of Arc 2. Confession Tour - Live To Tell 3. Confession Tour - Erotica
Not a fan of Taylor's, but her success speaks for itself. She and Madonna do have gargantuan success in common, so your comparison is astute and thought provoking. Makes me want to consider Taylor a little more. Thank you, Beth!
From award shows I would suggest Hollywood at the VMAs which has a reference to Like A Virgin at the first ever VMAs, Express Yourself (VMAs), You Must Love Me (Oscars), Living For Love (Grammys), Hung Up (Grammys). There are many great performances at mini concerts but you can do those after the tours, which are the major deal.
To me, the light thing you referred to as an allegory is meant to capture the star/light symbol used on the cover art for Ray Of Light. It's also found on every page of the CD booklet liner notes.
Oprah was all of us when she saw how amazing Madonna is on the stage. You have to watch the second performance now of that episode which is 'Little Star'
You’re spot on when at the beginning you likened her entrance with a bright light, radiant aura-like behind her-evoking the apparition images/paintings of her original namesake that of the religious icon of the Virgin Mary. She envisioned her artistic persona and advocacy as the modern day secular opposite of the religious saintly Madonna who was pious, meek, obedient and submissive to male authority figures, while the pop music Madonna is outspoken, irreverent, militant feminist, and a liberating free spirit. To illustrate this, she portrayed a subversive version of the Black Madonna religious icon In her dramatic opening number of her 2012 MDNA Tour, during which she came through a confessional box from inside a medieval gothic cathedral setting after reciting the Act of Contrition wearing a gold queenly crown over her black-veiled head and all black tight-leather outfit-where she shattered the glass enclosure around the confessional box with the butt of an AK-47 assault rifle she was toting and menacingly pointed it at her perceived enemies-the demonic looking gargoyle male dancers who appeared to be tempting her outside the front door of the cathedral. She then proceeded to perform the number Girl Gone Wild. Suggest you check this out.❤😊
@@karl5070 Thought about that but I wanted to tease her to start covering her tours at least. At the limited rate she’s sampling her vast videography (official music videos, tours, guest performances, benefit concerts, interviews, docufilms, etc.) she may never get around to covering all her 12 tours. But your point is well taken.
This was truly exciting back in the day. The context was a whole new Madonna, a whole new sound, voice and attitude. It was the end of the millennium and people were sort of needing something hopeful and soulful. No social media and Madonna was still THE most famous woman on the planet. Oprah was huge and it was just all capturing the zeitgeist of the time. It was electrifying. Also, I completely agree with the Taylor comparison. I’ve thought they exist in the same realm for a while too.

Mwah!! ❤❤❤❤ this was awesome ❤❤❤❤
Epic performance ❤ Epic reaction as always ❤ M 👸
I wish Madonna would just go on tour with a band, a stool and a microphone. Just a tour where she just sings.
@@christopherwalsh3945 That’d be so cool
She did that with her Tears of a Clown show (2016).
If you want to watch performances where Madonna's voice is in the foreground, and not the production of the song or the instrumental of the track or whatever, then you should watch these performances:
Fever (Live at The Arsenio Hall Show 1993)
The Power of Goodbye (Live at the VH1 Fashion Awards 1998)
Take a Bow (Live at the American Music Awards 1995)
@@rony1642 Thanks!
I'd change TPOG for You Must Love Me at the Oscars
My favourite live performances that I hope you would react to:
1. Ellen Show - Madonna's Joan of Arc
2. Confession Tour - Live To Tell
3. Confession Tour - Erotica
@@BonnieBenjaSim I hope to do the full confessions tour after mvs :)
@@BethThereseReacts fantastic. Have a blessed week ahead and get well soon.
Girl you need to watch the tours!!! Also her newest tour the woman is 65....still has so much vision and energy!!! I was there surreal moment
@@gustavvigolo4480 after the music videos! hope to start the mv soon lol i just keep putting it off bc it’ll involve more editing 😂😭
Not a fan of Taylor's, but her success speaks for itself. She and Madonna do have gargantuan success in common, so your comparison is astute and thought provoking. Makes me want to consider Taylor a little more. Thank you, Beth!
Taylor's music is so boring compared to Madonna... All her songs sound the same... Madonna is on another level
This was the first time she performed the song on TV
From award shows I would suggest Hollywood at the VMAs which has a reference to Like A Virgin at the first ever VMAs, Express Yourself (VMAs), You Must Love Me (Oscars), Living For Love (Grammys), Hung Up (Grammys).
There are many great performances at mini concerts but you can do those after the tours, which are the major deal.
React to the Bedtime Stories video.
I've never asked you for anything. Please do this.
@@meltingsmile666 I will get into music videos soon and will do them in chronological order! 👍🏻
To me, the light thing you referred to as an allegory is meant to capture the star/light symbol used on the cover art for Ray Of Light. It's also found on every page of the CD booklet liner notes.
Her live performances are my favorite. Her tours she sings and dances at same time. Not to many performers do that.
Oprah was all of us when she saw how amazing Madonna is on the stage. You have to watch the second performance now of that episode which is 'Little Star'
This video made my day

Suggest you check this out.❤😊
Ehm excuse me.. why are you spoiling the mdna opening? Let her experience the future performances without all these details.

Thought about that but I wanted to tease her to start covering her tours at least.
@@ianhaddock6057 no social media yeah that’s crazy to think about! glad you feel the same about madonna x taylor!!
