I also think there could be some fixes to the Mentor System:
    - Include in the offense reports an option that says "Conduct Unbecoming of a Mentor". Its punishment should be the temporary or permanent removal of mentor status.
    - Get rid of the Crown icon, or change it to a water can.

How very curious! My experiences are different. I find that the trade mentors on my server tend to be the more knowledgeable ones. The PvE mentors also tend to be not awful, even good at the game sometimes (not always, but sometimes!). It's specifically the ones that wear the full crown that are awful. If they have the hammer, then they probably don't care about the prestige of the full crown. If they have the sword, they probably care more about actually doing good than the prestige since it makes their crown smaller. But the full crown? "Ooooh, big shiny crown me want." It's the most flauntable one, and thus people that have the ego go for that.

in FF11 there's a system for rating mentors that you interact with. This in addition to the volume of content the mentor has completed then reflects on the "mastery level" and type of chat icon that mentor has, with the icon ranging from a bronze, silver, and gold flag. I think something similar in XIV would be an effective way of encouraging mentors to not just bum around in NN and give poor advice and instead attempt to complete more challenging content, become more knowledgeable, and be more constructive and useful towards other players.

Cactuar's Novice Network back in Heavensward & Stormblood was great, actually. There was definitely some general chatting, but it wasn't toxic or combative. Questions got answered, people were nice, I often saw mentors offering free crafting/items to sprouts that needed them, or offering their time in a dungeon, etc. But since Shadowbringers and the server becoming the 2nd or 3rd most popular server on NA, it's done a complete 180. I've only ever seen ERP mistells in there, never actually using it for that. On Zalera, there's usually not too much drama from what I've seen. There's a fair bit of really dumb, bad information though. Such as someone trying to tell players that BLM and SAM offer party support because they have Feint and Addle, when the entire point of the conversation was to compare them with others within the same role. Yes, SAM has feint. But so does literally everything else. If you don't factor in the buttons *everyone* has, then they offer nothing while other classes offer things to the party.
That's not to say they're not useful, that was never the point. The point was a sprout asked for job recommendations that have a lot of party buff and support options. Two mentors (SAM mains, go figure) were trying to insist SAM is a good support to the party. It was astounding. If you want to get technical and say they do have a support ability, fine, but if you have to strip the entire context of the question away just to preach about your favorite job because it not being what someone else wants is hurting your ego too much, maybe just stop talking. I wonder how many chicken nuggets they bought when they went to get their crown.
Also that "Anyone that cares about the story will have already done it" bit is bullshit. It's. Novice. Network. You literally *lose* the novice status when you reach Shadowbringers unless you boosted through the story. If they're in there, then there's a good chance they're not there yet! It's literally a chat meant for people that are still new! What the hell backwards logic is that.

Don't even see the need for the NN. So far in every dungeon or boss fight, if we did die to some mechanic we didn't know, there was ALWAYS some guy that knew the mechanics and simply explained what we needed to know. Everyone was happy about the advice and we usually beat the dungeon/boss right after. Everyone said gg and all was fine with the world. No feet pic requests so far either.
Fixing it is rather simple. Make guidelines the mentors need to adhere to or they get permabanned from mentoring and can never reapply again. Being a mentor is not a right, so weed out the trash. Don't have rewards or, if you have them, make them dependend on sprout feedback. E.g. sprouts rate you and you have to get a specific amount and ratio of positive ratings.

I was in there for a while as a "Returner". Wasn't a bad experience. Mostly. There was one guy in there who liked to "stir the pot" a lot and the Mentors liked to ban that person before they even did anything quite often.
Honestly, I ended up providing more help to the sprouts than many of the actual Mentors did. The only stuff I couldn't help with was duties I didn't yet have access to. I provided a lot of free stuff as well as advice on how to change the UI and how to go about leveling up quickly as well as other stuff. I think I even provided the "pre-requisite" items for Relics 3 or 4 times (for free) to players who wanted to start the Relic Questline. Even affixed the Materia for them.
I think the issue with the Novice Network is simply that the Mentors in it aren't really willing to "help" anyone. If someone asks to run something unsync'd, they'll go along. But, if you ask them for help doing nearly anything else... or obtaining anything else... yeah, good luck getting help.
I would like to get into the NN just to provide more help. I had a lot of fun answering noob questions, helping people run dungeons, and providing crafted items to players who couldn't make them. But, the uh... requirements are a bit steep for casual players.

They really do need to drop the novice network and mentor system. I always say they should turn that mentor roulette into an “all content roulette” which gives you the possibility of all content you unlocked in the game, (besides savage and ultimates) and tie the reward mount to that. Then make mentors have a watering can icon only visible to sprouts and have that system be opt in for people that want it and quite possibly have information for sprouts to know about mentors.

The philosophy behind it was that people would be chatting and talking. All spoilers were prohibited, and whenever anyone asked a question, everyone stopped conversation to help answer it.
We helped sprouts/returners do dungeons, we helped ferry people where they needed to go.
I dropped things on multiple occasions to go and help someone find an area, or gather aether currents, or finish a quest. It was fun.

The few times I've seen mentors there, they've seemed like they're just sick and tired of explaining things to people and get frustrated. I kind of get it, though, especially when you have people who wipe on the same mechanic every single time even though they fully understand how it works. It's like, maybe there's some people who just don't have the ability to react quickly enough for certain fights.

I was doing a story quest dungeon and was watching the cutscene before the boss but I heard screeching; I was worried they were doing the boss without me, I started skimming the dialogue as quickly as I could. When I got out of the cutscene the boss was already dead, the rest of the group had left, and I did not even get a chance to look at the loot (which was surprising since the cutscene was not long). Fortunately there two mentor statuses (Combat and Crafter/Gatherer). I became an omnicrafter (all gatherers and crafters at lvl 80) before I decided to strive for Mentor status and I did it because it gives party members an exp boost if they're below a certain level on their crafters and gatherers; a bunch of my friends were low level and just starting out crafting so I wanted to help them with that, boost them to lvl 20, and afterwards they could level however they wanted to (completing class quests, working through Ishgard restoration, farming shit in Diadem, or just by making stuff in their crafting logs).

I used to play Lord of the Rings Online. I intentionally created a human Loremaster and kept him in the Archet introduction area where new players go after completing the solo introduction. I'd watch brand new players struggling with their early experiences, and would jump in and offer support if it looked like a fight was going badly for them. I was in-character as a traveling scholar who quickly realized that dark times were coming, and that it would be the common folk who would have to rise up to face it. It was my goal to help new adventures take their first steps on their great journey. I'd stick with them through the archet introductory quest, and would tell them to keep their wits about them in the battle to come, and should they survive, to get word to my main character, who would surely help them continue their journey.
I'd then take myleave, the player would do the battle of Archet event, and then join the full multiplayer part of the server.
For those not familiar, LotRO eased you into the multiplayer aspect. Your first step was entirely solo as you learned basic controls and how to interact with the environment. Each race had its own solo introduction. The next step had a storyline that connected two of the four playable races. There was one fore Hobbits and Humans, and another for Elves and Dwarves. After that, all four races could interact. I had planned to create and elvish loremaster for the other branch, but never got around to it. I only stopped playing that game because my PC crashed, and I couldn't afford a new gaming rig to replace it, and what I got never would run it...
I've got more than enough machine to handle it now, and since it's free to play, I may have to jump back into it, and see if mentoring new characters is worth the time it used to be.
I wanted to form a fellowship that was dedicated to helping out other players in various regions. The game's title system would reflect an area of focus. I was going to make my main embrace his "Watcher of Roads" title and actually make back-and forth journeys between settlements, always walking, unless he joined a group. But my unplanned hiatus from the game cut those plans short. But I was going to require that anyone who joined actually earned the title for the role they wanted to play in the fellowship. It would have been about roleplay as much as guiding lower-level players. My loremaster was actually several levels higher than a typical new player in Archet would reach. I wanted him to be a Gandalf of a sort. A clearly powerful individual that could keep his charges alive and make sure they succeed.
Anyway, I'm rambling. Sorry. Listening to stories of mentors, even abismal ones like this video presents, awakened my sense of nostalgia... I think I'll go play LotRO again for a bit...
    Peace!

Whatever wow does with newcomer chat worked for me, I didn't end up playing the game past lvl 60, but I asked questions probably a dozen times in newcomer chat and no one was ever rude and usually got an answer.

You remember those kids in high school that were somehow always with everyone between classes but were never in anyone's class. Those are the people in the Novice Network

I’ve never seen a mentor once to even have this problem lol
