  • What $5,000 per month gets you in los angeles: east side vs west side! We're taking a look at two different complexes. The first is located in Hollywood, the second in Westwood- both really nice luxury complexes and pretty standard of what you can get in LA for this price range. Comment below which you liked better!

Kelly M isn’t it crazy tho! How different the cost of living is in different states! Always so wild to me to see the difference. I live in Florida, which is one of the cheaper states to live, and my parents are paying about $2500/month for 5 acres of land and a 4000 sq ft house.
To pay 5000/month around here is living very luxury, whereas paying 5000/month in LA seems to be like flying business class or comfort plus.

@@TheKoko71895 We have the equivalent in Northern Indiana, close to the Great Lakes and we pay less than 2K for 3.5 acres and 3400 sq ft home with woods. That seems to be pretty on par with Florida. I don't have to worry about earthquakes or hurricanes though...but that is my preference though. I do think a lot of people think, "Indiana?...I wouldn't want to live in the middle of nowhere." Thing is, people are extremely nice without being intrusive and there is little to no traffic. It is much more laid back while having a lot of cool things to do. Maybe I would think "middle of nowhere" 20 years ago but with technology making so many advances, it won't be long before cross-country travel is a super common thing. I mean, saving 3K a month, I can afford to travel and pretty much go wherever I want, when I want and come home to a friendly, cool community.

I think it was in April where she tried to find an apartment for under 1,500 a month which I guess in LA is considered low income......she went to Santa Monica and she could only find one place at that price..... and it turned out to be just a room....not a one-bedroom but just a single room with no kitchen and no bedroom, it did have a bathroom but nothing else......she did find some pretty nice places in the 2500 to 3500 range which she says is why everyone tries to find a working roommate to share the rent ......which is not an easy thing to do.....because people are not always what they seem.

Ok.. just to let people know. I have an apartment in Marina Del Rey. 2 Bedroom / 2 bath.. OVERLOOKING THE MARINA / HARBOR / BOATS! - 1450 sq feet.. at $3400. Yah. $3400. I split the rent with my bf. Sun roofs and everything. I would NEVER pay $5995 or whatever was shown here. We don't even need AC. The breeze keeps the temp in the 60's nearly all year long.
We've been here for a year. Love it!

Woaaaah I'm kind of stunned how small the first unit was! I'm not sure if it was the odd shape with the patio or what. You didn't mention how big the second unit was, but it just seemed so much larger. If I had to pick I'd probably pick the second unit, but I wouldn't really choose either of them.

Here's also what I don't understand about rent. If you are a working person, meaning you work 35+ hours a week, YOU'RE NEVER HOME!!! Why spend $6000 on an apartment you rarely actually see? Because that's taking into account you're a hermit who stays home at all times before and after work.

Omg I got super confused when I saw the “why I left la” video from Monica. I’m so glad you haven’t moved from here cause I’ve been watching your LA series before moving here (I’m from Mexico City) and I’m living in the east for... you’re not going to believe it... 300 usd per month in a house!

So glad I live in vegas. 2k a month gets you a nice house. I'll be buying an RV soon and where I'll be parking it is 500$-800$ per month with all utilities included. So my budget is 20k for the RV but looking at a 20-30 year mortgage on it so it will be extremely cheap especially compared to LA. And the best part being that if I don't like my neighbors i can move easily. And vacation is easy since I can bring my house wherever in the USA that I want to go.

So that first unit at a modest 1200 sq ft rents for 72000 per year. Add another 8k for utilities, cable, etc. and that brings basic expenses for that apartment to 80k per year. Because is't rent, you cant deduct a cent of it from your taxes. Factoring in a nominal combined tax rate of 35 percent you'll need an income of at least 122k per year just to pay your rent. Not shocking that 10s of thousands of California residents are living on the streets. Unsustainable and very sad

Why is USA so expensive? We own our house in the UK! It's a 4 bed, 4 bath, detached with a double drive on a quiet cul-de-sac and cost us £185k when we bought it!

This high rent apartment shopping is really cool. I lived in LA all my life, but it's almost impossible to see it all. Especially, if you can show more of the neighborhood around it. I'd recommend hitting the best downtown spots both north/south. Also, the quieter beach areas like El Segundo, San Pedro, Torrance/Redondo beach. Keep on.

  • @sarahbiernat3630

I live in the Chicago area and the apartments in the really nice neighborhoods are half, even 3/4 the price, of some of these LA and NYC units. A one-bedroom in Lincoln park is around 2,500 a month. It's insane how living on a coast can really impact the value of a home.
