    I saw them live in Copenhagen 1980 (I think), and it was great. OK not THAT great, but an ok night in Odd Fellow Palæet. (before it burned down)

    Listening to the early part of this album you can hear the consant influence of Brian May and Queen. May was one of the most influential guitarists ever. You can also hear snatches of the Police and Steve Harley. The problem is, bands like City Boy simply didn't have the creative genious or poetry of Queen. Power pop was short lived because the likes of Adam Ant and Duran Duran had taken hold of the singles market. Having said that, City Boy are grossly underated.

      yeah, thanx a lot - i already downloaded an older album of them - i think i missed them im those days, because i was on punk, new wave, new ska and the like then, completely different feeling - now i´m on a revisiting trip - all my old heroes, and they ARE quite many, haha - so now these guys fit in better than before...
      cheers... :-)
      btw. the other day i listened to bo hansson again, he was one of my faves in the 70s - still fascinating...

    City Boy are a good example of "to many cooks" spoiling the broth...too much talent, great writing, singing playing etc....they should have placed Mike Slamer in the limelight more blazing "guitar god" solos, something as a focal point would have helped their marketing a lot....instead they concentrated on arrangements and great hooks...some more self indulgent "rock" infused soloing (something Mike is totally capable of) would have put a brighter spotlight on the band as a whole.

      Have to say they sound like a band with too many identities struggling to be heard, and so probably finding a target audience was difficult, they didn't fit into a particular genre.

      I'm not sure if you knew this, but Chris Dunn was the original guitar player and he got Mike Slamer to join as a bass player. However, the band soon saw Mike's talents on guitar and Chris then switched to bass. I learned this in the extensive interview with Mike that I found on RUclips.

    • @robdisner
      @robdisner Год назад +3

      @@mrbill1390 Chris was out of the band by the time this album was recorded. Mike played all guitars and bass on the last two albums.
