I was never under the impression that Elidibus was prohibiting us from changing the past. I understood his warnings as simple statements of fact that attempting to change the past was futile because it's been bound to the present all along.
It’s sort of a closed loop. The events that occur in our time there have and will always happen and set things in motion, bringing us to the moment where we go back to the past and return to the present. It’s a brain bender, but it makes sense.
@@raisylvaine8398 Not necessarily as Raha's actions in Shadowbringers showed that the "flow" of causality could be changed. Although the initial causes were present in both timelines (the flood of light and black rose) the effect (eighth umbral calamity) didn't come to pass because the First didn't pass the critical point as it had in his original timeline and created a new branch. That means it should be possible to prevent the Final Days by preventing the creation of Metion or the memory wipe from occurring.
It doesn't matter in the end though because one way or another their civilisation would still fall, whether it be because of Athena or another person like Hermes who saw the flaws in their "perfect" society and refused to wilfully ignore them like the rest of the population.
@@steweygrrr I will be honest, the 8th Umbral timeline does throw a minor wrench into the machine and I feel like they’ve kinda…retconned that part of SHB for Endwalker to work. However, Venat clearly knows that we’re going to travel back to Elpis at the beginning of Endwalker, and we explain the events of Shadowbringers, meaning she knows what is to come in the initial timeline.
It’s mind bending but Venat’s actions wouldn’t make sense without the knowledge she has after our visit, meaning that our visit has to be a form of closed loop.

@@steweygrrr When Hydealyn split apart Zodiark, it also split apart space and time of Aetheryte. That the only reason why Graha was capable of changing the past, because each shard is their very own timeline he only gone to the past of the First and not the source. The fact that we can't change what happen to Elpis is because it happened before the spliting, that why we cant change a single thing of what happen there even if we tried
Even after all this time since EW came out... I still cant get over how charismatic Venat is. We saw next to nothing about Hydaelyn/Venat as a character before Elpis... Yet all it took was a single zones worth of storyline to carve her character into us. Having what was possibly the single greatest cutscene in the game doesn't hurt either... XD
Seriously. I was skeptical of her in the boat scene at the beginning of end Walker. And by the end I was apologizing for ever doubting her.

Garrett is like the player getting blown away by the story that a DM was just throwing at him.
Kyle: Well Kyle was acting like a DM who was playing, but was like "Damn, this DM can tell a story".
Both appreciated it, but your facial expressions and body language told different stories.
27:20 --- Common "consensus" is that all the hurts comes from the previous calamities. And since this game is still rated T, they cant show that amound of blood... so they made it black goo. We all know what it is...
I love Venat so much.
She even admits that she put people though things. So "Evil Hydaelyn" makes sense when you do not see the whole picture.

suffering exists because hydaelyn knows that the only way to beat meteion is for man to learn to live alongside despair and not see it as something to get rid of...
So she has to sit there and watch as all these people cry out for an answer as to why they have to suffer, knowing that SHE is the one that caused it. But its for the greater good.
She knows someone visited her in the past, but doesnt know who, so shes been waiting for you this whole time, not knowing when or where you'd appear.

Also to mention that, Venat knows and wants suffering exists because when she heard meteions report, there was a civilization that they removed suffering and sorrow, that they found eternal joy and bliss, but later succumbed to ending themselves because they found their lives to not have joy because of the lack of sorrow. Perhaps they grew bored or something. We'd be repeating the same mistake.
The very last scene of the "Light of Hope" mission that's part of The Crystal Tower has a set of noises that sound like Morse Code. You should look into it because it's a brilliant bit of foreshadowing.
Oh? Is this right before the WoL goes to Elpis? Returning from Elpis? Or another time?

@@starofaetherius I think in this case it was meant to be foreshadowing for something else entirely, but like so much else it was repurposed for the MSQ.

This is one of the few stories where it feels like they had it completely thought out BEFORE the beginning instead of establishing a world, then keep writting for it as it goes.
The story, time travel is so well handled that I was speechless.
i believe the devs have said before that the ideas for the storyline up to Endwalker only came about during Stormblood development

Yeah, this was an insane and unexpected sequence to see for the first time! I was awestruck

Why is Hydaelyn cryptic?
I think it's because she's a Primal and the WOL is a Primal slayer. As such, she realizes that the WoL has little reason to trust her unsupported word, so she creates scenarios for you to learn the truth first hand. It's only after you learn enough to really trust her that she's finally open and frank with you.
Just like a time traveler story, she can't explicitly spell out the future you told her to you, as she might change the future outcome. The wol survived the hardships because of faith, not foresight.
Too much influence may prevent you from going back in the past to tell her - so she's cautious with what she tells and reveals.

Man I fucking love this game so much.
I say this not to knock the finale of Endwalker which is absolutely excellent, but this is still my absolute favorite cutscene in all of FFXIV. The cinematography, the symbolism, the use of music, they were really firing on all cylinders with this one.
A day may come when I can watch that cutscene and not tear up. Today is not that day.
YoshiP was forced to make Venat's blood black by the legal team to keep the game's PG rating, much like Yoko Taro had to be "verbally restrained" to not wipe the players characters at the end of the ShB Nier raids.
Don't worry about your opinion of Venat, while there were some of us who did trust her a lot did not. To the point where a streamer I watched said she was evil right up until the walk. Plus this is a JRPG, it is a common thing to have to kill god. So I can see people picking either side.
Yeah at that time we're meant to be wary of Hydaelyn. We recently learned what she really is, and had been radio silent for a while. Even on NG+, though it pains me greatly, I still tell her I can't trust her, because at this point the WoL was given every reason not to trust her.
If I am a good and kind person that would want to help. However, I knew the future, and if I acted more than what I have been informed. If I saved someone, or exercised my power to protect others more than I was told I did, I could change the future and the quest fails. Not only do I have to hold on knowing the future is already written, but I can't even expend my power to protect others, I have to literally watch as things come to pass that I had the power to prevent...
I think that'd drive me to madness.
Such an amazing expansion and I didn't know if it could live up to Shb, but in many ways it did =) Excited to see your reactions to the big finish of 6.0 =)
From the moment you first encounter her in Endwalker, i had a bet with myself as to whether or not she was gonna turn out to be evil. So don't feel too bad that you had the same questions.
Random question: did they figure out why he calls you “new old friend” way back in Shb yet? I remember them contemplating that before.
Isn't that because you are azem(their friend) and at the same time you are not. That why it new old friend for you.
Its because Hythlodaeus had already returned to the aetherial sea and got his memories of you back, being a shade knowing you arent from that time *yet* he calls you "new old friend" @@dragonboyexz
@@GhostNishiki well at the time he would've been with Zodiark not back at the aetherial sea. He doesn't recognize you when you meet him on the moon.
Plus the shade was entirely made by Emet, it has no actual connection with the real hythlo other than being built to imitate him in personality and form.
@@nahuel3433 What exactly do you mean by he would have been with Zodiark? He sacrificed himself to bring forth zodiark yes but his soul still went to the aetherial sea. It is said by Hythlodaeus' shade himself that the shades are perfect recreations of the ancients right before the final days, however for some reason this shade remembers you from your time in Elpis hence him calling you "my new old friend"
@@GhostNishiki We see him still being with Zodiark and not in the aetherial sea when we go to the moon. The sea is a different place that the soul must travel to yet he is on the moon. Many souls are as not only seen by us walking around the moon but when fandaniel supresses the masks and tells them they should be silent.
Indeed they are perfect recreations of what Emet remembers about them. That's how creation magic has worked in every instance, emet selch cared about his fellows enough to have amazingly accurate concepts of them.
The Hytho shade is self aware enough and has some Emet memories too because he went too far with it accidentally. To actually give it hythlo's actual memories he'd have to fish his soul from zodiark (or the aetherial sea which I don't think he was in) and either put it inside the shade (which we know he didn't) or copy it.
Plus he'd also know Hythlo shade is aware enough for the scions to make conversation and get information. He wouldn't have left him unatended.
Regardless. Hythlo only calls you his "new old friend" after he sees your soul's color and tells you that before the sundering there was a person with that unmistakable color. A friend of his.
So after the sundering you are a new version of his old friend. A new old friend
So, Kyle. Have you drawn the comnection between Elpis and Azys Lla yet?
I understand why people were suspicious of Hydalyn, I even had my own suspicions as well, but on the boat scene, I decided to trust her the whole time.
