Michael Sheen v Anna Soubry on jobs in steel - BBC Newsnight

  • Tata Steel has confirmed it plans to cut 1,050 jobs, including 750 at Port Talbot, the UK's biggest steelworks. It has been losing £1M ($1.4M) a day - and has swallowed £3M of investment in the last four years. The reason for the difficulties are not particularly new ones: slowing demand and a seemingless endless supply of cheaper Chinese commodities - plus higher energy costs here.
    Emily Maitlis spoke to actor Michael Sheen who grew up in the Port Talbot area and has made a film set there, and Industry Minister Anna Soubry.

    There's a lot of stick on this report for Michael Sheen for being an actor and living in LA and campaigning for foreign children (what?!). Sheen is often a spokesperson for his home town and Country and has appeared in commercials for foreign charities also. You won't find him on a Nivea advert or an advert for Walkers crisps. He doesn't seem to care about those things. I've first hand experience of Sheen's priorities. Because his job is titled 'actor' and he's been successful, it does not mean that he is not concerned about current affairs, world hunger and certainly not the family he has living in his home town and the strong bond he has to home. Talent and money does not diminish the way a person divides their attention on important issues.

    Far less support to our steel industry than Germany or Italy, which also have much lower energy costs, and they have not imposed taxes on Chinese steel which is subsidised. The Tories have no problem with very large subsidies going to other privately owned industries such as large landowners/farmers (Tory mates), the railway systems (which were sold off to, and run by Tory mates), or the Banks (owned and run by Tory mates). The banks will never be able to pay for the damage they have done, because they simply could not pay the interest on the amounts which have had to be written off by ruined businesses and the public.
    The Steel industry will not be bailed out because the fall out to thier own class will be negligible. The Tories only ever feather their own nests, and will rob the nests of others to build theirs bigger. They are "powerless to do anything" until the effluent effects the affluent, then money magically appears in abundance. This happens all the time such as was witnessed in the floods of few years ago.
    If hypocrisy or lies had a smell you would not be able to enter the houses of parliament without breathing apparatus.

    "the price of steel has halved" says the Industry Minister. Well, yes, that's because they also told us that China has been dumping cheap steel in Europe. Did she not realise this statement? If HS2 is driven forward, there is no guarantee of UK supplying the steel because the first option put forward will likely be that cheap steel from China.....Or am I missing something?

    Does it matter if he’s an actor and has a few bob in the bank? He’s using his high profile to reach people who normally give politics a wide berth.
    A class act, in my opinion. If he ever swaps acting for politics I’d like to see him offered some measure of power.

    She said it all, we can't help the steel industry under the rules, who's rules, not ours but European rules. Another reason to get out of the union, who does not allow our people to help ourselves. Yet she promotes an undemocratic re-run of the referendum to try to keep us locked up in this economy restraining institution, while the rest of the world particularly in Asia prospers. There is only one country that prospers in the EU and that is Germany.

    One of the biggest reasons for the huge losses in steel and other industries is the law Blair introduced requiring at least 20% of energy come from renewable sources. Alaistair Darling, then then Chancellor, told Blair not to sign up because "it would cost us an arm and a leg". Blair ignored him and signed up. He later said he thought it meant twenty percent of electricity, not all energy, a huge difference. So now consumers, from ever household to giant users like steel mills have to pay vastly more for energy to pay for the new renewable sources that will take decades to return their investment. Companies like Tata are losing money because of Blair's vanity and stupidity. Shame Michael Sheen portrayed him in The Queen as little short of a saint instead of realising the damage he was doing to British jobs.

    This discussion by Anna Soursbery is pretty much irrelevant! Chinese dumped tons of inferior steel in the international market to depress the world price of steel. Because of European Union rules, it was not possible to bail the industry out. So then the Chinese bought British Steel for a song. Wake up. Britain!

    Having a job is all good but the reality is the resources to supply those works are finite. Not everything is sustainable, especially not with the unrealistic immigration levels and demand from people who want growth in the manner of keeping their seed alive. That's selfish and childishly unrealistic.

      Michael Sheen, who is home in Port Talbot on a regular basis and has poured a lot of money back into his home town and has never forgotten his roots a la Sir Anthony Hopkins. Yes he was in America for this, is he meant to put his acting career on hold forever to look after Port Talbot? No.

    • @TheQ-Continuum
      @TheQ-Continuum 7 лет назад

      It would appear that Michael has set one of his trolls onto me! The problem with MS is that he is supporter of the EU, like all those other celebrity "Remoaners". The EU, due to it's state rules prevents the UK government from bailing out the nations steel industries. British steel is too expensive to sell abroad, which means it cheaper to buy cheaper dumped Chinese steel. You can't have your cake and eat it. Anna Soubry should also know better, but won't admit it. But there may be hope for British and Welsh steel, once we leave the EU and are free from EU rules, then maybe we can save our steel industries. (Which is Michael wants) It's either in the EU (which Michael wants) or leave (which Michael doesn't want). You can't have one without the other !

    • @NorfolkEnchants
      @NorfolkEnchants 7 лет назад +2

      I am not a 'troll' on behalf of Michael Sheen, I have better things to do with my time believe it or not! Your comments are interesting but according to this www.walesonline.co.uk/business/business-news/uk-steel-industry-welcomes-eu-11705767 they don't make much sense, unless of course that article is a complete lie.
      If you think us leaving the EU is going to help the steel industry, think again. The Conservatives have been responsible for pretty much destroying our once proud industrial heritage so why would they be bothered about saving the steel industry? We will wait and see what happens as that is all we can do now but I am not foolish enough to go into Brexit thinking it is going to be all sunshine and rainbows and a happily ever after fairy story.
