All these posts are a bit amusing...I still live in Compton, and in my 60's so...whatever...quiet city at night now, so the former image is gradually going away with the few crackheads who survive and drink and smoke near the shop where I buy my Backwoods...but don't smoke weed, just for after supper as I don't hear the helicopter as much as a few years back. We just have a few city council members refusing to vote on bond measures to get our messed up streets repaired now. Zurita, Galvan and McCoy are not reading their packets and refuse to support either one of three, well developed plans proposed by the city manager's office thus we still have to drive around a bunch of potholes and streets that haven't been paved since I was in my thrities here. So if you drive around the city, that's what you have to really watch out for, these stupid potholes all over the town. WIlmington Ave has been partially redone as well as Central Avenue and part of Compton Boulevard, but side streets are still either patched poorly and you damage your car driving them or you detour, to avoid some streets here that are horrible totally. So my "reality" seems different from that of lowriders hanging out..our Sheriffs and the Highway Patrol keep our streets safer now, and vehicle checkpoints are random on certain weekends and I see lots of cars getting impounded for just cause here. Safer streets, fewer gang incidents because the city is in the process of moving forward, despite weak council members who want a raise after losing parts of nearly $3K each month for sitting on meetings held before weekly council meetings doing nothing at all. Our mayor, Aja Brown is great for our city but the other members who are holding up the repair of our streets are terrible representatives for all of us here. Shug Knight is over and faces maybe up to 28 years after the incident at the Tam's restaurant where he ran over Terry Carter and shouldn't have even come here in the first place. They were filming scenes for SOOC at Centennial and Universal security didn't allow him on the shooting set, so he goes to Tam's and that was his biggest mistake that day. All history now, and we've got UPS and businesses thriving now, as opposed to the days of NWA and their time making music underground. People used to buy their mixtapes at the former Compton Swap Meet, that's now a thriving new super Walmart and I love shopping there for things I used to not be able to find in local stores. Still have gangs and some losers joining them but what a time waster considering we're a small town that has it's own history and I've been here since the early 60's as a child growing up and taking piano lessons, going to catholic schools and finally attending USC on a full academic scholarship. So you think you know Compton from this video, do you? Interesting...you only know part of the story of this city with nearly 100,000 good residents. Got your knuckleheads, that's anywhere but the past mystique is going away as new people move in and call our city home. For me, it's definitely home, though many I grew up with I see visiting their mama's house and others just moved to Diamond Bar, Lancaster and Palmdale, desert. Took their problems with them, thank God so the city is getting better overall. Low riders on weekends but LEO's try to let them know this is not the place to just cruise at night. attracts trouble when people who don't live here come here and start trouble. LA County Sheriffs are cleaning up the city, town and that's been a good thing. Still got tagging but often when I see it I know it's only one individual having a moment, you can tell from the way they write, that it's the same person on a rage. They leave it up for a minute then paint over it quickly so school aged kids won't join loser gangs here much anymore. Why risk your car grabbing loose gravel and maybe going into someone's house during such stupid maneuvers? I have no clue, but I hear them less and less since the Sheriffs patrol and own our streets here and every sworn officer does their best for the citizens here to keep us safer than ever. Knuckleheads do what they do but with the next bond issue there will be cameras at all intersections. If they come from Watts, to do bad things a unit will respond before the tires are warm, to invite them to leave here...so now you know what's up in the "Real" Compton of 2018...we're moving to better and wait until you see us in another decade, new streets, new street signs and we're getting an Aldi's Market in the Gateway Town Center soon...parent company of "Trader Joes" coming....the new Compton will be much better than ever...Wish you were here? Nope....got enough traffic on Rosecrans and Compton Boulevard and El Segundo already during peak periods as people go to their jobs to pay mortgages and rent and car notes. The best areas near us are in an area known as "Rosewood" unincorporated Los Angeles County, just off Rosecrans near the fire station I like to ride past on my urban bike, to Food 4 Less for cat food and hummus and pita bread. People here are either new home buyers looking for a safe community to raise kids in and working class or seniors who are well retired and living well. I know the gang areas but many are in jail or prison who used to be part of the problem here. And we voted to say no to dispensaries, except on our outskirts. They tried to open a few illegally, but the Sheriffs and city attorney's office denied them business licenses anyway... got enough across the borders of LA County and Gardena so if you got a car, drive there instead. We suffered much during crack cocaine's epidemic in the late 80's and I worked in a level one trauma center not far from where I live now, so I saw the damage AK-47's did to human bodies and family's lives during that time up front and personal. The new MLK Community Hospital in Willowbrook along with the Medical Magnet HS, the Willowbrook County Library and apartments for seniors near the teaching hospital and new E.R. are the nicest additions to our area and many have been treated at the newly built and staffed facility but in the days past, I saw many die due to GSW and trauma. Now I work in both music playing for ministry and working in IT, a skill I learned at the Watts based, Maxine Waters EPC that got me a job working with Dept of Commerce as an Asst Network Admin and later on the Sony Columbia lot installing and configuring software for Xerox on that account. So from Compton, many of us do work that's satisfying, professional and pays well. Still think you know Compton from this video? Sorry, different vantage points, more romance than actual fact if you know this city like some of us really do. We live here, our families thrive here and it's not what you think at all, Just good people, some azzholes who act up and get arrested, but mostly good people who like to have a good time just being themselves. Plus some nice cars too, folks who love to fix up and show off their whips sometimes. Main Street in Gateway, unincorporated LA County is the "strip" for street racing on weekends and has been for generations. Sometimes the cops leave them alone since no one it causing a problem...other times CHP does get them to leave due to the noise and resident's in the area complaining at times...so I see the real city, instead of something done for clicks and such...different perspective but I remember when it was crazy here...and glad things have been changing, though we're a bit rough in some parts...like a bad haircut at the local barber joint...one on Compton Blvd, legendary spot and the other off Central where generations get their weekly touch up...fun spots to hang out and listen to the trash talk while waiting to here, "Next!!". Been here for a very long time...and I love my city, despite the bad politics plaguing us at present. They'll get voted out if they don't blink too hard eventually, and if Dr. Dre keeps his word, and I'm sure he will...we'll have a movie spot of our own and a performing arts center. Aja Brown is the best thing to happen to our city since anything and she ever brought the William's Sisters back to our city to help us with those who have lost loved ones to street violence. I met them and their father a long time ago when I used to work in City Hall doing video production for the city and yeah, met EZ once while they were shooting a video in one of our alleys. Shot video but I think I know who has the 3/4 master tape and can't wait until he comes back from being a director and film editor in his present gig. We talked and he has the stuff we shot, that's never been seen since we shot it...in the alley during the "F the Police" video they were shooting and Eric and he were good friends back then, E stepped up to our cams and we shot some footage...that's my Compton. What's yours? Seriously...people imagine all sort of things from afar...we're just normal folks trying to get our city further ahead as a nice place to live and we tackle our problems here together. This isn't a movie set, it's real daily life around here. Just people, being themselves and getting on with life. Just like everywhere else. Nothing special, when you live here 24/7/365 and know it as well as I do. My parents are buried here and maybe one day...so will I be. So you think you know Compton from this video, do you? Interesting...you only know part of the story of this city with nearly 100,000 good residents. Got your knuckleheads, that's anywhere but the past mystique is going away as new people move in and call our city home. For me, it's definitely home, though many I grew up with I see visiting their mama's house and others just moved to Diamond Bar, Lancaster and Palmdale, desert. Took their problems with them, thank God so the city is getting better overall. Low riders on weekends but LEO's try to let them know this is not the place to just cruise at night. attracts trouble when people who don't live here come here and start trouble. LA County Sheriffs are cleaning up the city, town and that's been a good thing. Still got tagging but often when I see it I know it's only one individual having a moment, you can tell from the way they write, that it's the same person on a rage. They leave it up for a minute then paint over it quickly so school aged kids won't join loser gangs here much anymore. The focus is on academics and trying to do something positive instead of courting a life behind bars and seems to be working. Of course you have to be here during weekdays...we're a working class community, Compton, CA USA, now and the movie just tells a story about some guys who did their thing and the world now knows Compton due to the movie, etc. That was during the 80's and 90's...fast forward and on my block, just quiet and every once in awhile someone tries to do donuts at intersections here. Why risk your car grabbing loose gravel and maybe going into someone's house during such stupid maneuvers? I have no clue, but I hear them less and less since the Sheriffs patrol and own our streets here and every sworn officer does their best for the citizens here to keep us safer than ever. Knuckleheads do what they do but with the next bond issue there will be cameras at all intersections. If they come from Watts, to do bad things a unit will respond before the tires are warm, to invite them to leave here...so now you know what's up in the "Real" Compton of 2018...we're moving to better and wait until you see us in another decade, new streets, new street signs and we're getting an Aldi's Market in the Gateway Town Center soon...parent company of "Trader Joes" coming....the new Compton will be much better than ever...Wish you were here? Nope....got enough traffic on Rosecrans and Compton Boulevard and El Segundo already during peak periods as people go to their jobs to pay mortgages and rent and car notes. The best areas near us are in an area known as "Rosewood" unincorporated Los Angeles County, just off Rosecrans near the fire station I like to ride past on my urban bike, to Food 4 Less for cat food and hummus and pita bread. People here are either new home buyers looking for a safe community to raise kids in and working class or seniors who are well retired and living well. I know the gang areas but many are in jail or prison who used to be part of the problem here. And we voted to say no to dispensaries, except on our outskirts. They tried to open a few illegally, but the Sheriffs and city attorney's office denied them business licenses anyway... got enough across the borders of LA County and Gardena so if you got a car, drive there instead. We suffered much during crack cocaine's epidemic in the late 80's and I worked in a level one trauma center not far from where I live now, so I saw the damage AK-47's did to human bodies and family's lives during that time up front and personal. The new MLK Community Hospital in Willowbrook along with the Medical Magnet HS, the Willowbrook County Library and apartments for seniors near the teaching hospital and new E.R. are the nicest additions to our area and many have been treated at the newly built and staffed facility but in the days past, I saw many die due to GSW and trauma. Now I work in both music playing for ministry and working in IT, a skill I learned at the Watts based, Maxine Waters EPC that got me a job working with Dept of Commerce as an Asst Network Admin and later on the Sony Columbia lot installing and configuring software for Xerox on that account. So from Compton, many of us do work that's satisfying, professional and pays well. Still think you know Compton from this video? Sorry, different vantage points, more romance than actual fact if you know this city like some of us really do. We live here, our families thrive here and it's not what you think at all, Just good people, some azzholes who act up and get arrested, but mostly good people who like to have a good time just being themselves. Plus some nice cars too, folks who love to fix up and show off their whips sometimes. Main Street in Gateway, unincorporated LA County is the "strip" for street racing on weekends and has been for generations. Sometimes the cops leave them alone since no one it causing a problem...other times CHP does get them to leave due to the noise and resident's in the area complaining at times...so I see the real city, instead of something done for clicks and such...different perspective but I remember when it was crazy here...and glad things have been changing, though we're a bit rough in some parts...like a bad haircut at the local barber joint...one on Compton Blvd, legendary spot and the other off Central where generations get their weekly touch up...fun spots to hang out and listen to the trash talk while waiting to here, "Next!!". Been here for a very long time...and I love my city, despite the bad politics plaguing us at present. They'll get voted out if they don't blink too hard eventually, and if Dr. Dre keeps his word, and I'm sure he will...we'll have a movie spot of our own and a performing arts center. Aja Brown is the best thing to happen to our city since anything and she ever brought the William's Sisters back to our city to help us with those who have lost loved ones to street violence. I met them and their father a long time ago when I used to work in City Hall doing video production for the city and yeah, met EZ once while they were shooting a video in one of our alleys. Shot video but I think I know who has the 3/4 master tape and can't wait until he comes back from being a director and film editor in his present gig. We talked and he has the stuff we shot, that's never been seen since we shot it...in the alley during the "F the Police" video they were shooting and Eric and he were good friends back then, E stepped up to our cams and we shot some footage...that's my Compton. What's yours? Seriously...people imagine all sort of things from afar...we're just normal folks trying to get our city further ahead as a nice place to live and we tackle our problems here together. This isn't a movie set, it's real daily life around here. Just people, being themselves and getting on with life. Just like everywhere else. Nothing special, when you live here 24/7/365 and know it as well as I do. My parents are buried here and maybe one day...so will I be. It's home...always...and the music comes from being real with each other and not tripping. Kendrick hangs out when he want's to be normal here.
