- From the YESSONGS album and video. My favorite version of Starship Trooper. Only the end was included in the concert video. I created a whole video using other footage from the show and the real ending. It will have to do unless the original film surfaces.

I think I've listened this song more than ten million times for the last 40 years. Still not tired.
It is worthy.
Absolutely the best.
Stupendous tune, it wears rather well.... I'm only up to about 6.2 million myself :-)
Same here, I was 14 then_and saw Yes as one of the first bands I saw. have all albums on vinyl. strength of emotion I feel listening to Yes is just as powerful now as then
Dave Scheff
That guitar solo at the end in epic. Been listening to "yessongs" since 8th grade, never gets old.
Wakeman coming in with the mellotron choir during the guitar solo really elevates this performance. Pure magic.
Ikr, real cherry on the cake but at the same time so much more than just a cherry on a cake.
The Wurm.. Always near the 6 minute mark. One very good reason Chris was the true force on a Ricky. Howes double neck.. Rick's solos.. The 70's folks. The fucken' 70's!!
Lee Ross its a double neck
S G but thats ok.....he's a badass nomatter what he plays....♡☆☆☆☆☆♡
Amen
The 70s definitely RULED.
i feel ya, bro!
The 70's... Relayer, Selling England by the Pound, Animals, Brain Salad Surgery, Thick as a Brick, The Dark Side of the Moon...
Those last 4 minutes are absolutely breathtakingly epic
7:32 is arguably the most epic moment in prog rock keyboard history. All hail Rick Wakeman!!
No love for Keith Emerson? Also a few of Crimson's keyboardist even original Tony Kaye? Prog Rock=constant change in not only the songs but band members. Glad I got to see Wakeman, Emerson and Ian McDonald. Rare breed these keyboardist-very rare breed. Wish Bruford had joined King Crimson from their inception, think he was invited but declined joining" Mabel Greer's Toyshop." That's hear-say of course. Heard a few times at concerts.
Huzzah! Three cheers for the Wake Man!
@@kennethgilbertdds7249 Guess not... More keyboardist around than Rick-try searching for them on here.
@@chrisbaker9887 I love Emerson, Tony Banks, Kaye and McDonald. But I have to say that I agree that this is the definitive Minimoog solo.
I prefer the Keys to Ascension version.
Seriously, how do you down vote Starship Trooper? Anderson has the voice of an angelic alien. Chris Squire kills here. The whole band rocks. This is fucking perfection.
His singing feels effortless which to me is a sign of real natural talent.
My hipster bandmates made me listen to REM and Van Morrison back in the mid 90s....I made 'em listsen to this.
Sal Puma dude I agree. love REM but Yes was awesome!😎
Yes stood alone in their prime with progressve rock in musicianship and artistry. No band could come close to the pictures they would paint with their instruments and vocals. An ingredient that only they had blending blues and rock with classical, folk, jazz and fusion. The Ultimate Musicians Band that appealed to the masses in Music. So creative, inspired and influential was the music of the 1970's to me as a teenager. The most amazing decade in all music that will never be matched or ever flourish with musical ideas like that again either
Van Morrison was good. The trouble that I have with REM is that their songs all sound alike to me.
Crazy my two fav. bands R.E.M. and Yes!!!
lol.
RIP Chris Squire. Thank you for all the wonderful music.
It's not an easy decision, and it changes daily, but today my favorite band of all time is Yes. This music so so complex and so perfectly executed that it makes me weep with joy.
Can you not find something yes for every emotion mood
Amen!!!
Yes is not my favorite band, but there’s nothing like them. They reach this mystical place that taps into that British sense of magic and enchantment, better than Led Zeppelin. Their marriage of classical and rock music is wholly original. There’s a version of And You and I here on RUclips that I stumbled on. It took me to a place of pure joy, where I just was carried along by the variations in the theme. They are unequalled in this genre of rock.
Still is and always will be my favorite band. So much of my life and youth with this band. I love them.
and Howe
same for me & Whats not to love? used to follow them around And see them all over the midwest, You know Like
YES HEADS....TRUELY A
PHENOMENAL BAND...Pure Raw Excruciating Talent Here, Thankyou YES.... ♡☆☆☆☆☆♡
M 54. the complexities of
the music they were doing
as well as theyre intense
presence onstage, wow !
Seeing them in every stage
of their respective selves..
It freaked my friends out,
They just didn't get what
was going on, & thought I
was strange. ...Yes ...
Always Something Special
About Their Shows. "Love."
& ...once somthing Is
Fabulous Musically It Stays
That Way. Always.
Love Yes..♡☆☆☆☆☆♡
the most epic song ever written and/or performed on any planet
Oh man. I can't believe Chris is gone. Yes has been so much a a part of my life for so long. He will be missed..Rest in Peace, friend.
standingwave73 what do you mean chris is gone? please don't tell me chris has passed.the best bassist ever and YES the best FUCKIN group yhere ever was. John K.
John Kerrigan Yeah, he was all of that. He passed away June of 2015. RIP
amen...I was always entertained the many times I saw yes and i was at the taping of yes songs...rip Chris
standingwave73 wow chris Mcquire is gpne
Holy Shit. That was literally the best and most epic guitar solo I have ever heard in my life. I wish I could time travel.

And this one ... that guitar is only a little smaller than my first car! LOL
This is the live version off of the live album called Yessongs.
Howe still plays this live, the end of every one of his version of Yes shows. I have heard it live a dozen times
Bill Bruford pulled out of this tour just before the band left for the USA, Alan White stepped in at the last minute, and having never played with Yes before, learnt the full set lists within a couple of days, and played drums on this tour and for a long time after....brilliant to see them in their heyday again..just awesome
He probably fucked up alot at first.
When great bands ruled the world :)
I think that in modern times , people have forgotten just how effortlessly talented Rick is.
This is my favorite Yes song with the original members. Every member stands out especially Chris Squire.
Technically, only 2 original members on this recording.
As he was making his way to the revolving stage I got to shake his hand and thank him. Beautiful memory that will never die. I was 17.
Possibly one of the GREATEST guitar solos ever starting at 8;05. Incredible...
One of their best songs and the ending simply awesome
I am currently toasting this true genius of our time, Mr. Chris Squire. Peace, my friend, and cheers! You are already sadly missed.
Him and Alan are jamming again as we speak.
I love this song!! Play it over and over
Nothing can touch this song! A masterpiece!!!
Gotta love the Rickenbacker grumble. Chris Squire was an amazing bass player!
Second half of this performance always gives me chills
In 1974 they were the first band I ever saw live. This video gives me goosebumps even today.
I rarely get goosebumps from music-but this one did it. And then I read your post. Amazing. Only Yes.
Indeed. All these years later it sounds great. Here's to another 50+ years. RIP Fishy - you will be missed by those who know.
And It Will Always Give U Goose bumps. ..Once Somthing is This Good, It Remains This Good For All Time. Wow Here They Come Again & Again. Thankyou for This Crispy Excellent Mix On This. ♡☆☆☆☆☆♡
AH YES...
I believe this is their opus. I've been a Yes fan since forever and have heard each and every one of their songs at least 1000 times. Starship Trooper gets my vote as their best song. ✌
@Satanic Panic Fun and Games Yes' 2nd best composition (you call it) is better than the work of most bands, past or present.
I may say I have since 74!
This song, and specifically this version makes me incredibly sad, as it was the last song on the triple album, Yessongs, which was my first Yes purchase. I was hooked and have played the record, (and CD) thousands of times. Just introducing my teenaged kids to Yes. It's my Dad duty.
Saw them In the Round at the old International Amphitheater in 1979. Incredible Musicians! John Anderson on top of a spinning wedding cake of a stage!
The 70's were incredible
This starts off pleasantly mainstream enough with it's almost soft-rock melody, but a little after midway into the song, there is an ascent that crescendos to the unparalled pinnacle of rock. They be jammin'
Easily one of my favorite songs of all time. So grateful for outlets like RUclips so we can see footage like this.
I need a ciggarette after that....and none of my clothes were off......lol
In my humble opinion, Steve Howe can be mentioned in the same breath with Hendrix, Clapton, and Page. My all time personal favorite.
No disagreement from me. Steve Howe should be mentioned. Another guitarist that should be mentioned is Terry Kath from Chicago
@@cyyoung7840 Hendrix, I believe, proclaimed Kath to be his favorite guitarist
@@calvinmendoza7911 yeah Hendrix thought Terry Kath was amazing
Yep. Me too. Steve Howe is a genius.
And of course Chris Squire. His harmony vocals are unique.
Playing this yet again for how many times I just do not know but as time goes on it just gets better and takes me back to the Rainbow when I first saw them perform live simply blew me away
Im very sad today...
RIP Chris, and thank you.
Spent my life since i was 13 (I'm 59 today) listening to YES day after day. What a very sad sad news to hear that Chris as passed away on June of 2015 certainly one of the worst day of my life with those of Alvin Lee, Greg Lake, John Wetton and David Bowie.....And even today when I listen to that masterpiece (especially the outro) I always get goose bumps...YES forever 😍❤
I saw them 4 times and still couldn't get enough.
If I could 'liquify' this music I would take it in IV, 24/7, ... 365 :D
(Or at least 'pour' it into my thirsty ears)
"Tonight gentlemen, we wear.... CAPES!"
Absolutely the best version of this one.
O Ya it's all coming back to me now. Wait. Now close your eyes and remember, think hard. Yes its coming back now. 1975, Fall, Capitol Center outside Washington D.C. Saturday, there's 10 of my closest friends, been partying for hours. My beautiful girlfriend Sara with me. A flask of wine, some "bud" some micro-dot and Yes I remember. Yes, there was probably no other group better in concert then YES. The music, the mellow crowd, and what a show. Good times many, many years ago. I do remember.
Yes, we partied in style those days. Purple crazy, Colombia's finest, gorilla biscuits, etc. and all the great bands in their prime.
YES!! The best sound system and precision i ever heard besides Pink Floyd, Wish you were here tour.
Oh yes definitely purple microdot.........YES rules.
I was there, one of the best concerts ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reading your memories of this perfect band. Thanks guys. ❤️
The Yes album got absolutely thrashed when I bought it back in the day.....that & Dark side both classics 😍
Honestly, this is as good as live music gets. Astounding.
An incredibly underrated song. It throws everything at you in different parts. AWESOME!!!!
That why that blew our minds even more. To see YES especially back in the day was something to BEHOLD... on the deepest level. They were truly spiritual events with no exaggaration and we all knew it then how important this band was. So sad to see what's happened to them and that the mainstream hasn't a clue anymore
Saw jon live a few weeks ago with his new band. He looked and sounded amazing. Still has it going on at 75 years old.
7:32 Best MiniMoog solo ever.
Rick's and Steve's solos are mind blowing. I could listen to this a thousand more times. Light years better than anyone out there today, and they were just one of many great bands of the era.
The escalation back and forth between them towards the ebd :)
It is a seriously good instrumental. Wůrms
It's time to remaster Yessongs - it's been over 40 years. This is truly an extraordinary performance by incredible musicians.
grandpa ken they did it! Rhino records just put out Progeny: Seven Shows from 1972. All remastered from original multi-tracks, it sounds like it was recorded yesterday. No Starship Trooper on it, unfortunately.
Out of all the amazing songs yes has created this is my favorite
RIP Chris Squire, March 4 1948 - June 27 2015
My favorite Yes theme. Brilliant solo by Rick Wakeman in the end.
Don't forget Steve's solo...Fabulous !!!
The rhythm section is together again!
R.I.P. Alan and Chris
Thank you gentlemen!!!
🧠🌌♾❤
This is a great song. One of my favourite songs from Yes
I saw Yes on this tour but I still can't understand how Jon Anderson could hold that note 'follow ' , just makes my heart stop now even 💗🌹💗🎸💗
This is one of those songs I listen to that just instantly makes me happy.
God blessed us all with Yes. Just awesome. Thank you!
Lol 5 years past since my first comment. I still get that same joy i got 50 years ago when i play this song. 💖🤗💖
Steve Howe is a Rock God! Trevor Rabin wasn't too shabby either :o)
This song gives me life.
This song makes me weep with joy
Starship Trooper is probably my single favorite Yes song. It is a powerful, driving epic from beginning to end. Steve Howe is the greatest and most technically brilliant guitarist in rock music history, and he demonstrates his elite-level skill throughout this soaring masterpiece. I am a hard-core ELP and Seventies-era Genesis fan, and I believe that Starship Trooper rivals the outstanding compositions of both those bands. Yes was a rare group of virtuoso musicians and genious-level songwriters. They were and always will be giants in any musical genre.
We went to that concert at the Academy of Music in New Yorktook my mothers car it started snowing and we drove home following the snow plows to Long Island in about 8 inches of snow.
I saw them 3 times in the '70s. All I can say is that I'm grateful to have had the chance. Only one other artist (Neil Young) has meant as much to me throughout my life as Yes.
Oh, one other thing. There's a video now on RUclips I highly recommend for Yes fans. It's "Yes- The Lost Broadcasts- Remastered" The first few songs show Yes, Tony Banks on guitar, playing from Time And a Word. The last 2 songs are with Howe but still with the original keyboardist playing from the Yes Album. It's fascinating.
I play it on The Music Lounge during my 'throwback' show...Come like The Music Lounge on FB ~~DJ Rick
standingwave73Crazy Horse. It's hard to come to terms that our world is gone. by that I mean the human world is gone.
standingwave73 Maybe you should listen to RUSH?
Craig Manning Used to have one of their albums, actually. What I heard was long hard rock songs. Couldn't call it Prog though their technical abilities are impressive.
standingwave73 Peter Banks rather than Tony?
70 people didn't like the greatest outro of all time! :-( )
70 idiots
it's a great outro.
Pieterson
74 now! :/
ippolytos1 Most amazing outro that I never tire of listening to over and over again to be honest. Fantastic. Part of the reason I still am interested in playing guitar myself every time I get fed up with it. I believe that part is called Wurm. :)
Daniel Lawrence-Thomas There is no
holding place in my mind, or way for me
to process the reaction that I get from all
the people I have met over the years
regarding YES. I have met only 3 people
in my life who like YES, like I like YES.
How can I play this song for people, and have them not at least give
the credit for the consummate performance?
I can't help it, it tends to color how I think
of people who don't like YES. Everybody has
their personal preferences, but This Band
supersedes mere preference.
Their compositions are Masterworks!!
Still shocked by the passing of that legend Chris...RIP Chris,
Yes was a whole band of virtuoso musicians. All of them amazing at what they do. Steve Howe is an awesome guitar player, Jon Anderson is an exceptional singer with a great voice, Rick Wakeman is absolutely flawless at playing keyboards, Bill Bruford was arguably the one of the pioneers of Progressive rock drumming paving the way for Neil Peart and Chris Squire influenced a Legion of bass players for over 40 years! What an awesome band!
My very first concert was YES in 1972, on their CLOSE TO THE EDGE TOUR. (The Eagles, believe it or not, were their opening act.) They were amazing and overwhelming!
It should be an international crime to have a RUclips ad separate the solos of Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe.
Heard most of the live versions, jaw drops. Just WOW!!!
There will never be another Chris Squire! May he rest in peace.
OMG I saw Yes in Concert. Unbelievable. I still have the original Yessongs Vina oops.l. Those were the days you could see all the security standing there watching everyone smoking pot and doing nothing. YES
I'll never forget when KCFX played this album late at night when I was 12 lying in bed listening to this on headphones. Amazing.
Wakeman solo towards the end is something to behold.
A fun and beautiful song, this version is the way I liked it best!
excelente version en vivo de esta bella cancion,lo que me hace seguir,y seguir buscando mas musica de Yes,Genesis,y otras bandas afines...
This song always takes me on a trip. Whatever mood I was in when I start listening, changes to good. Thank you YES!
I remember them doing this song in '79 at the Spectrum in Philly" in the round".Rick Wakeman literally shook the building when he played.I'll never forget it!
I was there as well, the Spectrum version (video is on here) was the best ever, hands down.
I was at this show
R.i.p chris squire
Steve Howe's superb solo. Smooth!
Love Yes...meeting them in '99-01-'09 was wild but working & recording with Jon in 2010 was a mind blower "Amharica"...
You lucky person
In high school in the 70's turned on my friends to Yes after finding my sister's CTTE album and greatly digging it.... I caught all kinds of crap because it was so different from what we were used to.... needless to say, everyone in short time became total Yes-heads..... thank God I had my sis and all the great music she tuned me on to!
YES YES YES THEIR MUSIC MAKES ME FEEL SO GOOD! GOT MY ENDORPHINS FIRING!
BEST VERSION ON RUclips, thanks for making this!
Jim Patterson absolutely, I saw the movie Yessongs in 1975. After seeing the movie and hearing this rendition I became a Yes fan for life. Still my favorite version
I was fortunate to see them at Capital Center in Largo Md, Tales of Topographic Set. Still one of the fondest evenings of my life. I not only love this band, I love those who love this band. Godspeed.
Been 47 years since i saw yes on this tour. i loved there music then and still to this day. Sadly some are gone now but there music will live forever 🙏🏻
Chris may be gone but the music lives forever...He's the Starship Trooper now~~~~
Just found this. My gosh Howe was insanely good! A lot of names are tossed around as the greatest. To me a pointless argument prone to too much subjectivity. I will say this guy was up there with the most skilled. Complex patterns, with speed, and very melodic. More important, is that he played into the songs. It wasn't just a show case for his skills. The whole band was incredible and unique.
ive seen yes 11 times throughout my life and have never been let down.my all time favorite band.
Saw yes at Madison Square Garden NYC near 1975. Then saw Wakeman solo. One of my all time favorite bands. Such positive energy, still sounds fresh today. Such great times when an album contained multiple great songs and not just 1 MTV hit to get you to spend you money on. One of a kind sound nothing even comes close, there are some copy bands like starcastle but Yes was and is the real deal. Even the lyrics are other worldly, certainly raises the consciousness level.....Peace.....
astonishing...
I remember tripping to this song when I was young....lol
A great song to trip to.
@@billdunn8542 Yep, countless times. Wow, this brings back memories of what seems like a different world.
My favorite alltime guitarist, keyboard player, drummer (on the Imagine album)
and bass guitarist, (singer's not too shabby)...I've seen them many times since
1972 when I was in the 9th grade and am still in awe of the talent!
RIP Chris Squire...playing 3rds and 5ths against the root chord, lead passing lines, just innovating the hell out of the bass...My first bass was a Rick, and practiced to this LP when I started. It was a good education.
I don't know why, but this is the song I thought of immediately on seeing the news about Chris Squire's death. I always loved the line, and picked up the bass (35 years ago?!) as a kid because of CS. RIP
The best guitar solo ever,,,,
My friends, this is the pinnacle of rock and roll right here.
Howe's versatility shook me. The whole band. My cycle to school. Winter rides. With Yes in my little teenage head not cold at all. We were lucky with all this going on!
Anyone who has the balls to think Yes was not one of the most artistically perfect bands ever has never played a musical instrument. Having seen Yes only once, being a former guitar player, I had never seen such perfection in any band. And with well over 100 concerts from 1974 until this weekend, I've seen almost all the great bands. Yes is truly a legend!
It sounds good but explain what's so technically exceptional about it that was different from other great guitarists at that time.
I wish they had the actual video for this, like the rest of yessongs. I feel like something amazing was lost.
Its got to be out there somewhere because they showed the concert with this version of Starship Trooper on British television way back in 1973 or 74 on a show called "The old grey whistle test", I had never heard of the band in those days and so when I watched it as you can imagine I was blown away by it, So i have been a fan ever since.
Chris Sqire is totally amazing, so overlooked by so many people.
Steve Howe's guitar outro solo at the end has to be one of the best of all time.
