★★ABOUT US★★
💬 We're Sean and Jessica from the USA and are now expats living in Amsterdam, the Netherlands since 2014. We travel all around Europe to discover new places, good food, and memorable experiences. You'll also find a bunch of Amsterdam content because we love our new home city! Follow our European travel adventures for food and fun 😄
When in Europe something is americanised that is considered a negative development in our society.
I have lived in the US for 10 years and I always find the service to be extremely RUSHED, overbearing and annoying. The waitstaff come over to take drinks orders before you have settled down and had a chance to look at the menu. Then you have to rush to figure out what you want to order before they come back with your drinks. And then they keep coming back asking "how the food is" or "if we need anything" and I feel like I can't relax. And then the check shows up the moment you are done. There's no time to relax and enjoy the food.
Why can't they just come once 5 minutes after we have sat down, take our order, and then leave us alone until asked for?
It's not the laid-back experience you'll have in other places, that's for sure!
For me they are like trained monkeys. Always repeating the same drill.
the faster the turnaround the more money they make. It’s simple like that. USA is about $ we don’t care about the experience and ppl that much.
It’s insane that I as a customer have to pay the workers in a restaurant. Why doesn’t the owner pay a livable wage as it is his business not mine
The age-old question
Don't pay them. If no one pays the staff leave. Not your problem.
It's thanks to lobbying (aka corrupt government bribing) that an entire industry is allowed to pay their workers less than minimum wage. It's an ongoing trend in the USA where this gives corporations more rights than their employees; not just setting ridiculous living wages but also getting away with horrendous lack of benefits (compared to the rest of the industrialized world).
But at least it's profitable, I guess. Yay capitalism.
@@tompiper9276 Thats upside down. Wages for them has to be harmonized.
Mine is why the rest are not paid by tips. They male the food, clean a.s.o.
@@jensholm5759 Sounds like a great idea. Let's start with your profession. You only get tips when you've done an outstanding job and your base-income is something like $5.00 per hour.
Going back to LA during Xmas time and going to Costco was insane. Americans are just obsessed with buying stuff they don’t need.
I avoided Costco 😂 I've tried to lose the Keeping Up with the Joneses mindset. I think I do pretty good but sometimes I slip
they buy stuff they don’t need with money they don’t have to impress people they don’t know
Cars have definitely gotten bigger. Just today, I had my 6-yr-old stand in front of a parked GMC to show her why she can’t cross the street alone - she’s barely visible above the hood. And thank you for mentioning how anxiety-producing it is to walk through big parking lots!
That's terrifying! I'm so glad you are teaching her this kind of safety! And the parking lots...it's weird how they are for people but not for people at the same time. And parking garages/decks?! The WORST for driving and walking.
The last time I was in the US (early 2018) there was a problem with my rental so they gave me another car. They gave me a Caddy. Talk about American icons.
... damn, man. I think my mother and I could have fit in the driver's seat together, and at 1'60m and 80 kilos I'm definitely not petite (that's about 5'3" and 175lb); she's a similar size, we can exchange clothing. Good thing it was automatic, because the gear lever was always further than I expected it to be!
And many more cars are now becoming SUV's US carmakers aren't making sedans as much as in the past.
here kids learn to cross the road at 3 to 4 years, so they are save if they walk next to streets!
at 6, they went to school alone, using public transport or even walk to school!
some already use their bicycles!
but i assume, you never went to Europe!
Its happening in europe to fortunatly not so much in the city's they just aren't practically there. Myself i have small car don't need a big one so why get a bigger one.
Wow, Jessica, such a good video! Great update in comparising USA to Europe! Always love those video's! 👍👍
Thank you for letting me know! These always make me think critically about my life here in Amsterdam and what it used to be like.
I love that you mention Not Just Bikes, I love that channel and I’m Dutch.
It's so good!
No matter how much I love nature, I'm kind of happy that we don't have bears in the Netherlands. I prefer our red squirrels.
Same. It's not something I miss!
Our little red ones are so cute.❤
They can give a nasty nip!
If you can just walk to a supermarket and pick up something fresh, you don't need big fridges or freezers. If you're in an oil-addict country where you have to drive to even get some food, you're gonna want to stock up.
These are some great insights! I hear you regarding the bad drivers. They are everywhere in Michigan where people will cut you off on a daily basis and will tailgate you even if you are going 10 MPH (16 km/h) over the speed limit. I don't really understand why that's a big thing here. While I do like the great service at restaurants here in the US, I always feel that servers come over too often to check in on you. They'll either ask how my food is either while I'm still waiting for it to cool down or when my mouth is full of food.
Yesssss! Asking how the food is when you haven't eaten yet is sooooo annoying 😂
In Europe they don’t have big fridges/freezers, because they can conveniently buy fresh food made that day. Here in USA we have to drive to the store so we buy week supply and stuff our fridge. We don’t eat fresh food much. Lots of preservatives and bad chemistry (some illegal to put in food in EU)
Exactly! We have outdoor markets multiple days a week, too. It's pretty nice!
When you're age 21 and up, in The Netherlands
minimum wage per hour is close to around 13,40 Usd
I find the Dutch minimum wage system so interesting!
@@aWanderlustForLife How so? To me it seems 'get paid 4 what you're workin' for.. 🙂
Mainly the change in amount by age vs a blanket minimum wage.
As far as I know, in The Netherlands, whenever you really need a glass of water, any restaurant or bar should provide you with one. So be specific in your order, and ask up front about tap water, just to be sure.
Ohhh I've had many conversations about this topic. Turns out that they don't need to give you tap water. It's not a requirement and in Amsterdam, it's probably more frequent that they don't just because it's so touristy.
I can't remember that I ever paid for water in a bar or restaurant in the Netherlands, I think that might be only a thing around the tourist traps like the centre of Amsterdam, Giethoorn, Volendam and Zaanse Schans. And my dog definitely gets free water without having to ask for it.
@@aWanderlustForLife There is no law that a cafe has to give you water, whoever if a person has a heatstroke or something like that and they find out that a cafe has refused water the cafe might get into trouble. As that there is a law that everyone has to put in a reasonable effort to help an other person in distress.
spend 6 months in the US, and i am really happy i never moved there.....
not even as a tourist i would go now...
i prefer France or north Italy, Switzerland is the most pretty country in the world and i dont need a passport to enter...
can you believe, there are no border checks for me inside the EU and this place consisting of 27 countries,
with own laws, languages and different people, while being an awesome place to easy travel!
Yes, the EU makes it easy to travel ☺️ I appreciate it!
3:01 wow, hadn't expected that one. Interesting how our brains train themselves in all kinds of strange ways.
I'm from Lithuania a small country in Europe and freezers are a thing in small towns and villages where people keep pigs etc. My grandparents has 3 🤣 And for shopping centers well there are insane numbers of shopping centers that you can buy everything pretty much from a needle to a car and anything in between. I live 5 - 6 km from oldtown/city center and in my area which is about 3sq/miles there are more that 20 shopping centers plus small shops, open markets and more. Most of European countries are very different little of bigger. I'ts very hard to make an accurate example when there more that 40 countries with overall very large population continent wise. Still good video👌
Absolutely! That's why I'm really comparing my experience in Amsterdam to my experience in Virginia.
I always love hearing/reading different people's life experience 😊
All of these are spot on! The first time I went back to the US, I got so overwhelmed at Target I had to leave.
In my area, at least Target isn't as crowded as Walmart and the aisles are bigger, so it helps. But these stores are just massive! My mom basically acted as tour guide. I would say I need XYZ and she would take me there 😂
Same! I’ve been back in the US for 5 years and target is still too overstimulating to me
There are bad drivers in the Netherlands too. Main difference is that at least in the Netherlands, they have had sufficient driver training and a hard exam to pass before they forgot what they learned and figure that they own the road because they have a BMW/ Audi/ Mercedes/ Volkswagen Golf...
Our infrastructure however doesn't let them do as much damage as they can. They can't race on 6 lane stroads here as we do not have those. Within a city, we're transferring back to 2 lanes as much as we can so we can give public transport and bicycles the priority they need to become viable alternatives to cars.
There are many levels of bad, for sure.
I drive a BMW and KNOW I don’t own the road. Heck, I even use my indicators all.the.time.
hm, you have 6 lane roads in the Netherlands...
@@Arltratloe used the word 6 lane 'stroad' that is something different from a 'road' ...
@@lws7394 cool, is he using a secret language??
I'd struggle to hide my disdain if someone referred to me as 'sweetie' or 'darlin'.
I think it's different when you grow up with it. But it definitely made me a bit uncomfortable this time. Not sure why!
i got called honey or sweety in a US diners...
that is like called Süßer here....and only prostitutes using it!
i only know i am driving in the Netherlands, because their traffic lights are different....street signs are the same as in China!
i am living between the Netherlands and China!
The one place I won't drink tapwater: the USA, not even when it is free.
Tap water is different in different parts of the USA. I used to have well-water growing up!
try a soda from a NYC McDumb!
on those"tipping jobs".
i believe you still have the same minimum wage when waitering, and your employer should pay the difference between tips received and minimum wage.
i think they just rather fire you than pay the difference.....
while we know that employers will never voluntary adhere to that, thus we have the same minimum wage requirement like any other sector.
Congrats, looks like you have been successfully NJB'd. 😉
'Orange pilled' seems to be the common term 🎉
There is a law now in the Netherlands that restaurants etc. have to serve free tapwater if the costumer asks for it.
I've heard that but not seen it. Do you have a link or anything? And there are still restaurants that will not serve it. I've been in them and would love to have the reference!
@@aWanderlustForLife I've never been refused a free glass of tap water in any Dutch restaurant - as long as i'm ordering something with it that i am paying for.
@@ollywright I have been refused free water many times, even in restaurants where I was ordering something expensive, like a salmon dish. They would say, "It's our policy; we only serve bottled water." Which is fine by me; I pay €3 for water and don't leave a €6 tip.
I've tried to find a reference to this new law, but I couldn't find anything about it. I did see that in Spain they've introduced a law for free tapwater in restaurants.
@@YouHaventSeenMeRight There is no law, @marjakeizer is wrong. And I don't think there ever will be. Not in the Netherlands.
Black bears are not something to be afraid of. They don't care about you and want nothing to do with you. Stop worrying about it, loud voice and you are gone. And i am in a town with 700 people, no stores, no gas, but my favorite thing is i never interact with anyone. No idea who my neighbors are and i can't see their house its too far away
While black bear attacks are rare, they happen and there's nothing wrong with me being cautious.
Isn't an English SVO sentence supposed to make sense. I am interested, get to the point please.🕊
