Fun things throughout the movie: 1. We all know how the garden in the other world looks like Coraline. But in the real world, the garden looks like the other mother. 2. It's implied that the well is another portal to the other world. Especially with what Wybie says about it, "it's so deep that if you fell to the bottom and looked up, you would see a sky full of stars in the middle of the day", and it's always nighttime in the other world. So this implies that the other mother has the key now... 3. If you look at all the scenes where they have dinner in the other world, the other mother never eats anything. There is nothing on her plate. In fact the only thing we actually see her eat is bugs. This is because she eats the souls of children to survive, and her last victim was Wybie's great aunt, so it's been a long time and she's literally deteriorating. She's replacing parts of her body with needles, and she was so desperate because Coraline was her last chance to survive. She literally says, "I'll die without you" . 4: the other mother can see out of anything with button eyes. (This is why Other Wybie wears a mask when he goes to rescue her). Also pay attention to the transitions. Whenever Coraline falls asleep, the other mother turns into the doll, which is always watching her. 5. With each soul she consumes, the more power she gets, but the longer she uses that power, the more she starts to lose control of it. 6. The song that the other father plays is a warning for coraline. If you listen to the lyrics, it's full of foreshadowing. There are a lot more small details that have an explanation, like why Mr. Bobinsky is blue, the paintings in the house, and even the cake Coraline eats, but you can look those up for yourself if you're interested.
So the ‘other mother’ is actually a creature called the Beldam, which in lore is basically an evil spirit from the woods in a woman’s body. She can shape-shift her body into what a person desires. So yah, basically this entire movie was based off that type of mythology.
These are some fun facts I learned about this movie: - The medal Mr. Bobinski wears is a medal awarded to those who helped with the Chernobyl cleanup, explaining his blue skin. - The ‘Welcome home!’ Cake has a double loop in the O, which is typically associated with the handwriting of liars. - The Bedlam’s needle hands are shown as hints throughout the film, like the creation of the doll at the beginning of the movie, appearing in lightning strikes or in the shape of the tree above Coralines head on the cover art. - Miss Spink and Miss Forcible are canonically a lesbian couple in the book, however it was taken out of the film since it’s for kids. - The Other Father is a creation from the Beldam the same as the rest of the world, and is punished by her throughout the film for trying to help Coraline escape, like the hints in the lyrics of the song he sings for her, the piano covering his mouth, the Other Mother dragging him out of the room when he starts talking about the key to the door and of course when he hands Coraline one of the ghost eyes before sinking under the bridge. - The soundtrack of the girls singing was deliberately written with the lyrics being just gibberish words, to give the song an unnerving otherworldly feel - As time goes on, the Other Mother wears clothes that more closely resemble her spider form, until the final night when she wears a dress with a skirt that resembles a spiders bonnet. - In the dining room of the other world, there are three pictures of children’s silhouettes. These represent the three ghost children the Other Mother has already taken - The first night that the Beldam and Other Father say goodnight to Coraline and sit by her bedside, the Other Mother’s shadow on the wall depicts her true form, while the Other Father has no shadow at all, hinting to his non existence outside of the Beldams intent. - It’s much more subtle, but throughout the movie the Beldam is deliberately posed so that the furniture or decorations behind her look like Devil horns on her head - The insects that guard the door in the other world are actually insects depicted on the wallpaper of the original worlds door
If you were paying attention to the Other Father's song, you'd realize that it was actually a warning. Making up a song about coraline. She's a peach (something to eat) she's a doll (how the other mother spies on her) she's a pal of mine (he actually cares about her.) She's a cute as a button to everyone who ever laid their eyes on coraline (buttons for eyes) When she comes exploring, mom and I will never ever make it boring (how the other mother plans to lure her into staying) Our eyes will be on coraline (sewing the buttons into her eyes) And then the pause right at the end, before he pulls away, he looks right at the camera like he's saying, "Did you get that?"
also when they give the buttons to coraline so she can decide if she wants the buttons sewn onto her eyes, the other father says “so sharp you won’t feel a thing” almost as if he’s trying to scare her off from doing it.
My guess is that she is taking out her anger at her parents' dismissal of her on someone else. No excuse for it but with her dad ignoring her and her mom snapping it makes some sense that she was more likely to lash out.
I mean he did jumpscare her with a bike, a weird mask, while screaming at the top of his lungs. I’d be pretty snappy too. Seems like they become at least friend _ly_ by the end, if not completely friends, so I guess it worked out.
lmao it’s an on purpose part of her character imo. for example, rival points out how childish coraline’s mom is in stating “maybe your other mother should buy all your clothes.” not saying get mom was necessarily cruel for this, but it’s very casually condescending and that’s how she acts towards coraline most of the movie. this might be why she has grown to be so individual and apparently almost jaded at her young age. she even has an RBF kinda like her mom 😭
The tunnel is meant to look inviting to unsuspecting victims to lure them in. But once the illusion is gone, you see it's covered in evidence from all the past children that tried to escape upon discovering the truth.
There’s also a little detail in the book that Coraline senses the tunnel is alive. So it’s either a separate entity, or an extension of the Other Mother aka the Beldam. There’s a theory that the tunnel is part of an inter-dimensional being, and the Other Mother was trapped inside its “belly”.
Glad you took the challenge. Saw this in theatres... in 3D. We all expected some fun adventure, no real scares. We all felt progressively duped. Like: Okay. Ok? o... k? Oh. OH NO. Idk. The trailers for this movie were pretty straight forward about the Other Mother's intentions, but you'd have had to see those to know something was up
The hardest scene they had to film for this movie was the mice circus performance. If you know anything about stop motion, you know it's ridiculously hard to pull off, especially like this.
So the well is considered the original portal to the ‘other world’ so when Coraline dropped the key I the well she essentially dropped it back into the world which is why I always thought the cat was able to disappear back at the end
@@-betagames- correct. The well may be a portal under the right conditions but it’s not to the dimension the beldam lives in which is why it was the safest place to put the key. The cats abilities are not very well explained but he has the ability to teleport between dimensions freely. Just because he teleported in the last scene doesn’t mean he went to the beldams dimension (why would he go back?) rather it’s just showcasing that he can teleport at whim to whatever other dimensions he’s aware of. The beldam is invariably doomed to die by starvation as you see in her true form she is very skinny and you can see her bones. And yes while she can eat bugs her life force/her immortality only continues while she can eat the “lives/souls” of others. She preys on children vs adults though because they are easier to appease and fool. What i love about this movie is that the ending isn't really a happy ending when you think about it: Earlier in the movie, Wybie talked about how you would be able to see the night sky if you were standing at the bottom of the well, that is a reference to the other world where it's always night time. The well is a portal to the other world and Coraline unknowingly handed the key to the beldam by throwing it down the well. The other world wasn't destroyed because when they were ''fighting'' the hand, we can see how the beldam is still alive, stuck behind the door. Which means that the other world is still there as well, this is confirmed in the final scene of the movie when the cat walks on top of the Pink Palace sign and is able to get to the other world because the portal still works. The garden in the final scene still resembles a face, but it is not from any of the lost children. It's not from Coraline either, but it is the face of the beldam. Her face is smiling, she has won.
Actually no, Coraline locked the door from both sides, so yes the bedlam has the key with her and she probably unlocked it from her side but she won’t be able to open the door from Coraline’s side; and since they threw the key back, no kids will have the opportunity to open it again (Unless the beldam manage to get the key back or something)
@@painauxraisins3131 the thing is, at the beginning of the movie, the door was already lock from coraline side but the beldam still manege to make coraline come to her world. If you need things explained, i recommend abitfrank's video's on it, she has done quite a few explaining and analizing the movie while comparing the differences with the original book
Something else someone pointed out to me: There's a hint from the first visit that the other mother was spying on her. Coraline complains about wanting to play outside in the rain, to get her mom's attention, not because she actually wants to. When she goes to the other world, the other mother suggests playing outside in the rain.
Try reading the book. Scariest book I’ve read tbh. To be fair, I don’t read much in the horror genre, I just watch it. Coraline still gave me nightmares about the Other Mother sewing buttons in my eyes. Oh, and the Other Father was infinitely more terrifying.
For the Other Spink and Forcible, when they were shouting "Thief! Give it back!" Those are actually their real voices. When they're singing or just speaking normally, they're altered, but their real voices are so creepy, for that one scene, they just said, "let's just use them as is!"
Be honest now... were you also lowkey terrified at this movie? Take a look over at www.patreon.com/RivalReacts for the full reaction to this & TV shows like The Boys, Loki, Rick & Morty and Invincible!
Other Mother made Other Father and Other Wybie to be a caring father and friend to Coraline - but she did it too well, they both really do love Coraline.
19:50 I think that's all the kids deaths in order. From the back to the front. The boy, the screaming girl and the one closest to the screen who was Wybies grandmother's sister. She also matches the doll the Beldam was taking apart at the beginning.
So something someone else stated on another react I watched is the reason why that guy is blue is because that badge he wears is actually a Chernobyl clean up badge. It’s also why he eats beets because beets are supposed to help against radiation.
Ooooo!!!! This is my favorite film!!!! Or one of at least. I think it does such a great job with leaning into the creepy aspect of things. Like, I wrote an essay my freshman year of art school and I used it as an example. The scene where Coraline is offered the buttons utilizes a very subtle Dutch angle to make us feel unsettled, even if we don’t realize what’s going on. Similarly, when the Other Father pulls his lower jaw down, it become uncanny valley because there’s an unrealized set of rules that we set for this film in our understanding of it as a stop motion (ergo, a real set that follows the rules of real life) means we understand that a set figure with a set skeleton shouldn’t be able to stretch like it does. There are other things but those I think stand out the best! Have you seen Kubo and the Two Strings? Is done by the same studio, and is just gorgeous to watch! The animation and story are absolutely phenomenal!
I loved this movie when it came out. I even got the dvd with red/blue 3d glasses! I always felt sorry for Other Wybie bcuz in the end, The Other Mother just used him as a prop to try and scare Coraline into not going in Mr. B's apartment. 👻
ever since i saw this movie i’ve loved it. even as a kid it never scared me i have always loved everything about it. have probably seen it 1000 times and can recite the entire movie honestly.😂 favorite movie
I saw this movie in the evening as a kid, and had a nightmare about it so yeah I was shaken up, but kinda forgot about it. Now I had showed my younger cousin and we can quote just about the whole movie script from how many times we've watched.
16:48 they transformed into their younger selves, who were stage/screen stars of some kind; coraline was looking at the old posters of them when she first met the real ones. you have to get around to "the dark crystal" one of these days
21:1124:43 The stone Coraline uses to see the ghost's eyes reminds me of the Seeing Stone from The Spiderwick Chronicles lol. I'd love to see a reaction to that film someday - it's *such* a good film, and so underated.
The only movie trailer i was ever really happy to see was coraline. I had watched it once before, but I assumed it was a dream & kind of forgot about it. Then while i was at my grandma's one day, I saw a movie trailer, and it was that scene in the kitchen when coraline first crawls through the door. I was honestly so amazed that that movie was actually real as i remembered it, and I was sooo excited to watch it again.
Also, the "other mother" is known as the Beldam, she started with the little pioneer boy which probably wasn't too hard assuming the roles he was forced to play in like 18-1900's. Then she feeds on their young lifeforms and the eyes make the world bigger and better, meaning the more eyes, the better the world. After she took the girl with the weird looking hat probably 1940's time and the Wybie's Grandma's twin. The longer time without eating again, the more desperate she becomes, hence the signs of impatience and even the people she makes like her dad and Wybie had their own mind and unlike the neighbors who were controlled by the Beldam. It's like she's a starving wolf who still has to wait for her food to be close enough. And ironically she can only take the eyes/lives with their consent.
I love how you say the intro with the creepy music doesn’t scare you and it’s just grooming, but that’s the creepiest part in my opinion. Idk, something about disassembling the doll, pulling its stitches, basically taking out its fluff like organs and leaving the skin or the corpse; it gives me chills. But I still love this movie!
Not a scary movie, but in the same stop-motion animation style, I'd recommend watching/reacting to Tim' Burton's, Corpse Bride movie... it's kinda short, though feels longer. There's also some references and gags to look out for!
This is the only scary movie I watch because it doesn't terrify me like other scary/creepy movies do, but still creeps me out enough. This movie came out when I was 13 and wanted to see it so bad! My dad got it for me (in 3D) and we watched it together. It was awesome! He was creeped out! I was creeped out! Can never show my mom this because she will be scared. It would be very funny though because she would think since it's a kids movie, it's probably not even that scary. Then she watches it and rethink this is scary for a kids movie...then kill me for her watching a scary movie because she hates scary movies haha
The reason that Moboski(If I spelled it correct) is blue is because he survived radation from a nuclear plant disaster and lived to tell the tale. he was earned a medal. He wears that Medal all the time. But hey its a theory.
Mr. B has the medal of the Chernobyl liquidators which were people who cleaned up radiation from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, which is why he has the blue skin. And he eats beets to deal with the radiation poisoning.
i have a theory that beldam actually controls her parents and make illusions for coraline. So, her parents suddently changed cause beldam was controlling them the whole movie to not give attention to their daughter so she could be more interested in the other world that has everything she wanted. And when coraline came back to the real world and her parents disappeard, actually beldam was controlling them to stay out of there (probably in the city), but when they came back they didn't remember or didn't noticed that they were out for so long. and also, just to answer your question, Bobinsky is blue and has this weird body shape because he was one of the Chernobyl Liquidadors, probably he was kinda infected by the radiation and just stayed like that, and that's also why he's so flexible. That's kinda confirmed cause he uses the medal that all the liquidators have recieved.
Love your hair😍 I think Coraline is just creepy but as it is based on Neil Gaiman's novella than it is understandable as it is his style 🙈 Great reaction 💪🏻🌺

- The soundtrack of the girls singing was deliberately written with the lyrics being just gibberish words, to give the song an unnerving otherworldly feel
- As time goes on, the Other Mother wears clothes that more closely resemble her spider form, until the final night when she wears a dress with a skirt that resembles a spiders bonnet.
- In the dining room of the other world, there are three pictures of children’s silhouettes. These represent the three ghost children the Other Mother has already taken

Yeah the fandom is surprisingly nontoxic and while out theories can be wild, we never go after each other.

Coraline is creepier than some adult horror movies, change my mind. I’m not even afraid of dolls but this movie scarred me for life as a child.
This is facts
Take a look over at www.patreon.com/RivalReacts for the full reaction to this & TV shows like The Boys, Loki, Rick & Morty and Invincible!
this was my comfort movie as a kid😂
This SPECIFIC movie made me scared to go near doors that I hear banging on as a kid.
✋💀
I was a Lil scared when I was a kid
VERY dude I couldn't watch that movie at night, cause if I did-
I was like 11 the first time I saw it, and we watched right before going to bed. I was so scared that I cried xD
Other Mother made Other Father and Other Wybie to be a caring father and friend to Coraline - but she did it too well, they both really do love Coraline.
this story is based on an experience that the writer lived quite terrifying also the cat its the best
AHHHH coraline!!! i was literally just watching another coraline commentary just before this! such a good movie 🤓
19:50 I think that's all the kids deaths in order. From the back to the front. The boy, the screaming girl and the one closest to the screen who was Wybies grandmother's sister. She also matches the doll the Beldam was taking apart at the beginning.
The years on the bowls of taffy are the years the ghost children went missing.
Where ?
@@a.g.demada5263 when they make her the finder of lost things. Before she goes back to find her parents and the kids' eyes.
Not him hitting on the beldam first chance he gets 😂💀
rival: “i think cats usually don’t talk but..whatever”
me: *HO HO HO just you wait.*
So something someone else stated on another react I watched is the reason why that guy is blue is because that badge he wears is actually a Chernobyl clean up badge. It’s also why he eats beets because beets are supposed to help against radiation.
👻 it’s definitely not so scary when you’re an adult, but as a child it freaked me out so much🙈😂
It’s scary as adult, just in a different way.
Coraline’s parents are terrifying.
I love this movie, I'm so happy you reacted to it
Henry Selik is a genius 😁 it's sad that most people think Tim Burton directed Nightmare before Christmas
The part where she bangs on the door scares me to this day
The cats voice is actually the wybie that couldn't talk
I truly love how all the reactors that i watch interact with each other, it’s so wholesome 🤍🤩👻👻
In the welcome home message on the cake, there's a unique loop in the O that symbolizes dishonesty.
She is welcome, but she is not home.
"Please check that chicken's poop." Rival 2021
I loved this movie when it came out. I even got the dvd with red/blue 3d glasses! I always felt sorry for Other Wybie bcuz in the end, The Other Mother just used him as a prop to try and scare Coraline into not going in Mr. B's apartment. 👻
IM PROUD OF YOU!!! 👻
Thanks becs 🥳
The fact that you were scared that every single comment was gonna be about girls pooping got me laughing a lil bit too much😂
Oh. And 👻
I'm so happy to see so many ppl reacting to this movie! Neil Gaiman is a genius!
It’s ironic how Coraline was my favorite at 2 and now I’m kinda scared of it lol
This MOVIE IS ICONIC. Still my favorite horror movie (animation) to this DAY. And im obsessed with the book.👻
ever since i saw this movie i’ve loved it. even as a kid it never scared me i have always loved everything about it. have probably seen it 1000 times and can recite the entire movie honestly.😂 favorite movie
I saw this movie in the evening as a kid, and had a nightmare about it so yeah I was shaken up, but kinda forgot about it. Now I had showed my younger cousin and we can quote just about the whole movie script from how many times we've watched.
Tysm for putting my comment on the video!
It has been like 10 years that i have seen that movie! It was fun to see it here again.
I am always impressed with the claymation of this movie 👻
Ayyye now its time for Kubo and the Two Strings..its got creepy elements as well and is so rich and epic
This film legit terrified me as a kid bro 😂
16:48 they transformed into their younger selves, who were stage/screen stars of some kind; coraline was looking at the old posters of them when she first met the real ones.
you have to get around to "the dark crystal" one of these days
Loved the reaction ! Please react to Prince of Egypt next, it's truly one of my favorite animated movies ever made.
21:11 24:43 The stone Coraline uses to see the ghost's eyes reminds me of the Seeing Stone from The Spiderwick Chronicles lol.
This movie used to scare me as kid.....
Tell a lie I’m still scared now lmaooo 💀😂
Absolutely no shame there 😂
This is the best ghost I can give you without my phone for emoji's: (>")>
LMAO we take thoseeee!
the other mother is just beyond creepy!
The years above the taffy represents when the kids were taken by the other mother at 21:05
The tea reading represents the other world as the hand and the georiffe is the normal world
Also, the "other mother" is known as the Beldam, she started with the little pioneer boy which probably wasn't too hard assuming the roles he was forced to play in like 18-1900's.
Literally love this movie. It was super popular and also many adults reported how terrified they were of it.
But I still love this movie!
this reaction makes my heart happy
This was my favourite movie as a kid, my parents hated me cause I wanted to watch it every day 😂 😂
it's not literally scary for me but intriguing.
I have little doors in my house and I was so scared of them when I was younger after I watching this movie
I watched a the theory videos on Coraline of The Theorizer. He makes really good videos and his theories on this film are pretty cool!
Love this movie.
Good reaction.
Also, Try Treasure Planet. Good movie as well.
Not a scary movie, but in the same stop-motion animation style, I'd recommend watching/reacting to Tim' Burton's, Corpse Bride movie... it's kinda short, though feels longer. There's also some references and gags to look out for!
love this movie like crazy, such a masterpiece!!!
DEFINITELY watch 'The Theorizer's' Coraline theory compilation (I think it has 13 parts) it's really really good, if quite disturbing
The reason that Moboski(If I spelled it correct) is blue is because he survived radation from a nuclear plant disaster
and lived to tell the tale. he was earned a medal. He wears that Medal all the time. But hey its a theory.
My boy the production value is getting much better. You look great. Hope this video gets 5k likes dude
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I loved it.it was diffrent
Love your hair😍 I think Coraline is just creepy but as it is based on Neil Gaiman's novella than it is understandable as it is his style 🙈 Great reaction 💪🏻🌺
Based on the book written by Neil Gaiman and directed by Henry Selick starring Dakota Fanning as Coraline with Teri Hatcher as Other Mother
The only thing I am early too is a Rival upload
This movie is a masterpiece. So amazing.
Also, just a tip; I don't immediately see it in your vids but if you haven't seen Anastasia yet, please do. It's so dark and beautiful.
It was always my favorite movie and I think it explains a lot
You should watch the theorizer he has a two hour long video of all his Coraline theories and they are AMAZING

Bro I entered the video and saw the other mothers "monster cake" and I was like I never noticed how thi-.... then you said "She's skinny but that waist" and I realized u were my favorite reactor cuz we think alike lol
LMAOO
Other father was trying to give subtle hints to Caroline
Great reaction!
They're two separate mice. There's the mice from the other mother and then there's the mice that the man upstairs has.
Thank you for reacting to my favorite movie!❤️👻
The theorizer has some of best theories on Coraline. You should check his channel out
