  • Blown transmission, what's next!? I break down the basics on how a h22 transmission works internally and then I figure out how to get the Prelude running again :D Next up, we check the compression numbers on my freshly rebuilt motor, lets go!

    One small tip on checking compression. It is typically best to hold the throttle body open during the test. A closed throttle body has a chance to throw off your readings by a small percentage since it will prevent air from being able to move freely through the intake manifold. The difference varies by engine and intake valve condition, and the difference is usually minimal on a healthy engine. For example, if you had leaking intake valves, you would notice a bigger difference between testing with the throttle body closed versus open. Compression would test lower since an open throttle body would allow more air to escape past the problematic valves. Same applies for a leakdown test.
    Your compression numbers are great. I wouldn't be concerned at all. Re-test it after break-in and keep the throttle body closed so you get a test with the same condition, then test it a second time with the throttle open just to see.
    About the SH transmission, it does require being mated to a SH block. Same exact engine code but the casting is slightly different and will prevent usage of a base transmission on a SH. This is where it becomes a royal PITA for SH owners... If your block ever gets trashed, you must find a SH block, or you must swap to a base block & base transmission. It is really hard to find a good SH block. The go-to rebuild method is to sleeve your original block so you can keep your transmission.
    Thanks for being thorough with your transmission tear down. It was interesting to see. Props for learning about it all so quickly and for being so transparent with where your knowledge stops. Keep it up!

It's taken a bit, but my pearl white 01 sh is running pretty dam awesome now, don't give up on the lude. I my be able to help you through some issues if you need. Just watched your last post, and this little trick might help with the Speedo. Hold down both the gas and the brake (right down to the floor) turn the ignition to the on position with out starting. Hold gas and brake for 5 seconds then turn off ignition.let sit for 10 seconds, turn on ignition let sit for 10 seconds then start car. This process should reset your idle and Speedo. Good luck bro and once again awesome job

    Ok couple things. So as far as I know, a base model transmission will not bolt up to the motor in the SH, however i dont know if you can just swap the differential. The rest of the internals are the same though. I have a SH transmission sitting here collecting dust, rebuilt with carbon synchros. The block on the SH is physically different than the base model, even though they are both designated H22A4. One major difference is the physical location of the oil filter being relocated because of the ATTS system mounting location. Im fairly certain the bolt pattern is different too.
    As far as fluid, all we run in ours is the amsoil synchromesh for street cars. Have had amazing results. If you intend to track the car, you can run their 75w90 manual transmission fluid. BUT thats for when you get it hot at the track. Its too thick for normal daily driving, so dont leave it in there.

    • @Rawrkee
      @Rawrkee  Год назад +1

      Bro; I didn’t know that the base trans would not bolt up to the SH block. Thanks for clarifying that 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
      And awesome! I’ve thinking about flushing the Honda MTF after he break in period and replacing it with Amsoil Synchromesh. Thanks for the insight!

    • @Rawrkee
      @Rawrkee  Год назад

      So the mounting holes don’t line up? I’ve seen BBA alliance offer a block off plate for the ATTS unit which also acts as a mounting point for the intermediate shaft but that’s when you put a base trans on a SH block. I still don’t know how exactly the conversion works

    • @Rawrkee
      @Rawrkee  Год назад +1

      Mine does the same in both the heat and the cold but thats because I have a few upgraded electronics, ex: sub, speakers, 2 amps, resistors for the tailights. Everything is hooked up to my radio and so I simply disable everything before starting up the car by removing my radio face. If I couldn't do that, I would consider upgrading or cleaning your grounds. If that doesn't help, I would think your starter is going bad

  • @InClaymont
    @InClaymont Год назад +1

    By the way, what internals are in the engine? I had around 270psi of compression in my euro r block. I expect stock p5m pistons to make about 220psi of compression if the motor is broken in properly. I need to do another compression test on my fully built motor since I am now around 1000 miles on it. I haven't really been getting on it due to fueling issues so I am just hoping the rings sealed up like they should. What oil did you run for break in? I run Amsoil break in oil in the built motors. I have used Lucas and regular non detergent straight weight oil in stock blocks with good results before too though.

    • @Rawrkee
      @Rawrkee  Год назад

      My internals are all stock, I simply did a refresh on the motor, meaning I replaced the Piston Rings, Crank Bearings, Rod Bearings, Oil Pump, various seals and gaskets, all new Valves and Valve Caps. My motor still isn't fully broken in yet... should I wait till then to see if the compression numbers change?? 👀👀 I didn't hone the cylinders nor did I gap the rings because the rings are OEM and I assumed they were within spec from the manufacturer. Break In, I used the cheapest conventional oil I can find. Couldn't find break in oil at any of the local stores but you know, my motor isn't 'built' and so I don't think it was necessary to use specific break in oil

    @rawrkee!!!! I love the content just found you! GET THAT OIL OUT OF YOUR TRANSMISSION ASAP! If it’s the “Honda genuine manual transmission” oil from online. It feels smooth but it will 100% mess up your transmission. You’re better off with synchromesh from autozone. It’s thicker and that oil you got is too thin. I went through 2 transmissions with that oil in my h22 accord. Both got stuck in gear and wasn’t able to get it out!!

    • @Rawrkee
      @Rawrkee  Год назад

      Ahhh snapp, good thing I was planning on flushing the trans fluid after the break in period for the engine. Do you think Amsoil Synchromesh would be a good option?

    • @94mr_mike
      @94mr_mike Год назад

      @@Rawrkee I think it’d be fine. Personally I’d probably go with royal purple. Cause they’re top of the line. Yea it may be expensive. But you wouldn’t really need to change your oil for while. It’s been a while since I’ve had my Honda. So I can’t have much input on other brands cause I went through 2 using that same oil and then gave up. Be sure to not over fill it and I’d probably not go too fast for awhile and make sure to go through every gear. That’s just what I would do if I had another chance with it. I think the Honda mtf is more for newer transmissions cause it’s thinner And these 90s-2000s preludes and accords have miles under them. But yea bro just trying to help out with my experience and don’t want to see you go through another transmission like I did!
