Of course he would have been amazingly successful writing for others as he was known as a wonderful lyricist (36 writing credits for 1D along!) but we would have been denied his gorgeous, emotive vocals that move me like no one ever has. Each is unique and can stand on its own but together form a cohesive album both lyrically and sonically. In fact, his fans got one of the album tracks, Defenceless, to chart! louis really does try to bring a positive and hopeful message in all his songs, even something so horribly tragic like this. there is a version of this he did for charity - richard’s bucket list - and it’s so beautiful and inspiring. i think you would love it and it will really show you the man louis has become. very genuine, gentle, caring and kind. thank you and sorry for the tears!!

That was the first ever performance he did on the song. It was on release day with a small number of fans. I think you can see how nervous he was, he also got a small lyric wrong. It can't have been easy to perform that song for the first time, especially with such a small crowd and silence surrounding you. One of my favourite things about this song is the lyrics at the end, which are "we'll end just like we started, just you and me and no one else, I will hold you where my heart is, one life for the two of us". I just feel that those lyrics are particularly sad because his mum and he were by themselves for a long time, as Louis' biological dad abandoned them. And he thought he was going to be the first one to reunite with his mum, but unfortunately that wasn't the case as Felicité passed away literally a week after this song was released.

Yeah he used to send home 25 of those for his mom 🥺 And on his first ever sports day in school when he was like 5 years old he won 3 medals and gave them all away to his friends to make them happy. When he was really little, barely 2 years of age he used to sit in his buggy (stroller) and say “hi” and “good morning” to everyone he sees. I can go on all day with these stories, he’s an angel boy. Him and his mother also hosted A LOT of charity events to help others and make sick children happy, my favorite was the “Believe in magic cinderella ball” for terminally ill children. He's been through so much in so little time and my heart goes out to him. This song hits me hard every single time. I lost my mom suddenly (she had a stroke) pretty much a year after he lost his (December 15, 2017), I was 36 at the time, and I can't imagine what a mess I'd be if I had lost my mom as young as he did. I don't know how he's able to sing that song and not break down because I sure as heck cannot even get through listening to it without tears. He was young and so was his beautiful mom. I'm thankful for this song though, because it helped me with letting my emotions out instead of keeping it all in. I'm sorry this made you cry as well, but that was inevitable, you'd have to be cold-hearted to not cry with that one, and you definitely do not seem to be the kind of person who wouldn't.

I had a similar reaction the first time listening to it - and if the first verse might not bring the tears out fully, the second one definitely does and the bridge just kicks you when you're down even more. Truly a heartbreaking and beautiful song. He also said once that he didn't plan to write a song about his mother, but found that it was very cathartic and helped him process it better by putting what he feels into words🙏🏼
