    If you appreciate and are interested in medium format for landscape photography (and anyone who has actually used one as opposed to read about one will be) but find the start-up costs of a new MF camera too high should look at a Pentax 645Z. It has been on the market for years so you can pick them up used now and there are some very good film era lenses that you can get for a very small price that will perform perfectly well for manual focus live view landscape photography. Medium format on a budget and I tell you the image quality and DR out of the 645Z is really astonishing - the same or better than the Fuji. I have to agree with this video though - the discernible differences between MF and full frame are minimal until you print large. But what landscape photographer doesn't want a 1.5m long print hanging on their wall?

    I like your comment about coming back to a place again and again. I have been photographing my local woodland, which is about a five minute walk from my house for the last year. It's a place where I walk the dog and take the camera. The more I shoot it, the more I get to know it, and the better the images I get. After you get the obvious stuff out of the way, you start to find more interesting compositions. I am more interested in creating a series of images that work together, rather than a single image.

    Very well said Adam. Fujifilm is killing it in the medium format realm. However, it is not a camera for everyone out there, although the price if you compare it with other medium format equivalents it's way better and more affordable compared to hasselblad OR a mamiya leaf. Imagine what is going to happen when they will introduce a 100MMP sensor. It is right around the corner and it will certainly not cost as much as a phase one. One thing is for sure, there are great things to come in the next few years.

    The colours are richer than others straight out of camera Fujifilm. Try CaptureOne for developing raw files. CaptureOne interprets the file with deeper colour.

  • @Les_Noar

    With file sizes over 8000 x 4000 your computer will have to work hard to cope with the data. They will take up a fair amount of storage too. Interesting to see how cameras are evolving. Especially when I think back to when digital cameras first came out and I paid about £300 for a point and shoot with 1.3 megapixels.

    • @gperpetuo
      @gperpetuo 5 лет назад

      Basically any computer can work it easily. Even with ~24mp cameras, if you make a panoramic shot, you'll have to work with bigger files.
      And regarding storage, 1Tb is soo cheap nowadays. Storing movie files is a far bigger challenge than "Big" pictures :)

  • @markharris5771

    I like your performance/cost curve, and everything you said makes sense. If what you say about the Fuji 50R comes to fruition it will be the most tempting camera for me since the 5DII.
    I already shoot 645 landscape but I keep have to put a funny roll of paper with some plastic like backing in it to make it work, the rear screen on it is rubbish as well.
    It would be nice if you did a vlog with your dad in it, somehow I imagine he’s a special guy because you have great values. It was a nice image you captured with him.
    I think, but I could be wrong, but doesn’t the Phase One already have a 100mp back? I’m not sure many who have the Hassey X1D Landscape Kit think it’s good value at £11.5k, so Fuji could be on to a great thing here.
    Am I right you have the new iMac Pro? How do you think an average 16-32GB RAM machine will cope with the file size? I know when scanning a 645 neg on my Windows 16GB it can be a slow process editing and I now only edit on my iMac with 32GB.
    A brilliant and very interesting video Adam, very well done indeed.

    • @Firstmanphotography
      @Firstmanphotography  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks Mark. Phase one have 150mp offering now with a price to match. It has Capture one built in which is interesting though.
      Yeah I do have an iMac pro. I initially edited the images on my 2015 Macbook Pro though. I created a new catalogue in Lightroom and it seemed to handle them just fine.
      Appreciate the support and comment as usual. I don't take them for granted.

    Fuji GFX is cool. You could use "old" manual glas as PENTAX-A 645 35/3,5 SMC, or MAMIYA 645 SEKOR-SHIFT-T 4,0/50 for landscape, very well. This would change your cost/performance chart dramatically ;)

    Didn't they send you lens hoods? Reason I'm asking is, I dropped my hood for my 32-64mm in Coniston Water. I couldn't find anyone with stock so I emailed Fuji to see if they could sell me one direct. They sent me their "office lens" lens hood free of charge. Imagine Nikon or Canon doing that!

    • @Firstmanphotography
      @Firstmanphotography  5 лет назад +1

      That’s some pretty great service. Yeah. I’ve got the lens hoods but I don’t use them normally so left them at home. Take up room in the bag so I just shade with my hand if required.

    Nice to see your editing process here Adam. Those cameras are great for landscapes as are the many medium format film cameras people still enjoy using. The way the lenses render images on the larger formats and the shallower DoF they allow compared to FF might be other reasons for choosing them. We are all just waiting for the prices to come down! 🙂

    Really interesting video Adam, it's very exciting to see Fuji bringing these cameras out at a very slightly more 'affordable' price. Definitely the lenses. The GFX system doesn't have coverage for the full holy trinity 16-200mm range. The lenses they have are great but I'm not willing to give any of that range up.

    • @SD_Alias
      @SD_Alias 5 лет назад

      @@Firstmanphotography thank you for your opinion.
      I am interested in the GFX but i am missing some lenses like a 24mm shift lens for architeqture. And general some faster wide lenses.
      You are right still some gaps in lens portfolio...
      I keep watching the GFX system and its development. They have now a 100-200mm but unfortunately only 5.6 not 4.0.
      But i love the RAWs. Nice colors and with CaptureOne phantastic IQ…

    I considered this camera during my recent switch to MF but those DVF's drive me mad. For me at least, finding and composing an image using the LCD is hard when you have been used to the OVF's of old. You can't beat a proper old fashioned mirror in my opinion, assuming your back and knees can take the hammering of carrying it around. Pixel peeping and dynamic range aside, the Pentax 645z, which I opted for produces beautiful images and is no doubt a beast by comparison to the GFX, but as was pointed out to me recently - shouldn't a medium format camera feel substantial...like you are working with something noteworthy? Thanks for your thoughts and effort and sorry sod's law got the better of your first image!
    It's saddening to see the squabbles developing below between people over which kit is best. It matters not if you are happy with what you have!

  • @oneeyedphotographer
    @oneeyedphotographer 5 лет назад

    I would like to see what you can do with these images using Capture One Express for Fujifilm.
    A big question for me is, "Can anyone tell from the finished print whether I used this, Hasselblad mirrorless, a Pentax 645D, a D850 or a 5DsR?"
    For those who can, my next question is whether they are creators or purchasers of photography.
    Phase One has at least one back that's monochrome. Instead of individual sensors dedicated to detecting different colours, they're all dedicated to distinguishing between luminosity.

    I bought one year ago the GFX and use my Canon lenses ( TSE17, TSE 24 and TSE45) and old Mamiya 645 very sharp and not expensive on Ebay (55-110, 210mm and 300mm) and use all of them with the focus peaking. It’s a very slow down camera and I enjoy, like you, to see my prints. If you may buy the GFX S, it’s the same sensor and will appriciate to work with.
    See you on your next video. Best regards.

    Hi Adam, as a new user of the fuji XT-2 I have found that lightroom's 40 on the sharpening can give that painterly, oil paint effect. I don't know if you have experienced this with the XT-3 you recently purchased. I now convert to DNG first.

    Great video Adam, yet again. I think it would be a nice to have at best at the moment having the med format camera at its current price but as you said, it will fall down the value curve and make one affordable. I still think at 3-4k, I would choose a high end full frame at this moment in time as my print requirements don't extend much beyond A3+. Time may change that I guess. Thanks again.

  • @Luigi13

    After you printed the image I see a big difference from when you showed it on the monitor. I see more purple on the sky instead of grey that the monitor showed could that be related to the Canon printer? I did some test by downloading some raw files from DP-review site of this camera and the R version and I felt that there was too much black or darkness but that also depends how the photographer shot the images. Comparing to the Nikon D-850 I preferred the Nikon look in general. Just my opinion here. I have the crop sensor Fuji XT3 and I think Fujifilm has a different sensors on the crop bodies the Xtran sensor are these larger sensor the same I think not? Cheers.

      @edwardjenner1381 5 лет назад +1

      As someone who has always printed my own, I can say it is definitely cheaper to use a 3rd party. The issues are a little different though. You probably have to decide if you are going to allow the 3rd party to do any automatic adjustments to the image. If yes, then fine, no problem and for most images this will be fine.
      If you don't want them touching the image - i.e. you are 100% confident in the file, then it is usually another process. In this case though I would suggest having at least a small printer to make proofs on (even a fully calibrated monitor might not be enough). I have done this for large prints, but had to embed the printer profile they are going to use into the image (they gave me the profile). Then they just send it to the printer and anything not right is your fault.

    Great video Adam. Shit luck about the lens. These things happen. Best thing about fuji....if that was your own gear you know they'd look after you in a heartbeat. Just a suggestion but re edit via capture one(even the free one) and print it again. You'll never edit a fuji file in LR again. Re the print, any pro lab worth their piss will give you better prints, better skin tones, gradiants, deeper blacks, longer print life span etc. Obviously depending on their machines. The trick is finding a lab that knows what they're doing and has invested in modern equipment. Desktop printing has come a long way but still not there yet. A simple way to explain it. Everyone can cook a steak at home. Some better than others. Every restaurant can cook steak(chemists and normal labs) . Few restaurants have the best meat and can cook amazing steaks. If you follow. Fuji are sending me out the xt3 and hs1 next week. Hoping they'll send me out this camera too...it's a long list before it gets to me 😂

    Great video and interesting camera, but your printer is only printing at 300dpi so the print will be the same as with your Canon? On a plus, I liked the graph and quick maths lesson!

    • @Firstmanphotography
      @Firstmanphotography  5 лет назад

      Yep, like I said. Not going to make much difference at that size. I still think it looks better though.....that could be the lens as much as anything though.

    Great insight into the Fuji medium format camera, and such a beautiful image from the coast. Did Fuji come up with an explanation about the rubbish performance of their 23mm lens?

    Nice video Adam. I think Fuji will need to make an equivalent lens to the full frame 16mm-35. Was the lens you used wide enough for landscape photography.

    • @Firstmanphotography
      @Firstmanphotography  5 лет назад

      Yeah the 23mm is equivalent to 18mm. The 32-64 is equivalent to 25 at the widest. Personally I would miss the 19-24mm range although it wouldn't be a deal breaker.

    Are you shooting at 4:3 or 3:2? I'm excited to get into medium format!

    • @Firstmanphotography
      @Firstmanphotography  5 лет назад

      4:3 uses the full sensor and you can crop down to 3:2 if required.

    Hi Adam, Yes thank you I did enjoy the video, I always do and I love your work ethos. You seem to be a typical nice yorkshire guy, straight talking - genuine. So I ask you, if an expensive lens has a problem/fault, and it is not as you repeat the manufacturers fault, who's fault is it? Also can I ask why your lovely photograph with the GREY ominous sky came out of the printer with a very Royal Blue sky? My own Canon printer does this too and it is not a good look.

    Do you worry about destroying the sensor by pointing a mirrorless into to the sun?

    Interesting to hear your thoughts on the MF camera Adam. Are you planning to try any other types of tests such as astro or street photography during the loan period?
    Was wondering if you took an image of Roseberry topping with the 5Div for your project or do you need to go back out after experiencing the lens issue

    • @Firstmanphotography
      @Firstmanphotography  5 лет назад +1

      When I checked the image in the field I zoomed into the centre and it looked ok. Didn't realise there was a problem until I got home on the big screen.
      I have to go back. Not really feeling that's a problem though!!

    I was just wondering.
    If you use medium size format sensor, do you get even shallower depth of field that you get on full frame?
    Was just wondering because sometimes i long to go back to crop size sensor just because of that thing...

    Is the point of this camera to create images that you would eventually want to print, possibly even on large sheets of paper? If so, would you get the same results for a lot less money by using good old 35 mm film in a nice vintage camera? Surely you're not going to waste a medium format image on Instagram to be displayed on a smart phone, are you?

    First image to my eyes looks as though you had some camera shake, I love my GFX, the 23mm prime and 45mm prime are exceptional. the 250mm is also a wonder to behold. Also they have announced the 50r at 4500 usd its a great price, I wouldn't be surprised if in the future even that price comes down. Lovely final image

    • @georgetrujillo9618
      @georgetrujillo9618 5 лет назад

      Did you confirm it was a bad copy lens, did you have the same issue show up in other photos? Do you have shake in your specular highlights towards the outer frame? The lens doesn’t have floating elements in it, so I would be surprised if you can take a sharp picture and then a shaky one.
