I Made a Table Saw Lathe! | No Idea This Would Happen!

- See how I used my table saw to turn a vase. I don’t have a wood turning lathe, but I wanted to make a wood vase. Usually that would mean that I have a problem. But instead, I made a pretty cool woodworking jig that lets me to turn the vase on the table saw! This is a prototype lathe jig so there is probably a lot that can be modified to make it even better. But I have to say that I’m extremely happy with how great my vase turned out. One day I do plan to guy a traditional wood lathe and jump into wood turning. But because I don't have one I got creative and made a substitute. And as always, utilize your own safety precautions when using tools and techniques that are new to you.

I have never made something like this on the table saw. I'm happy with how it turned out and I feel like I learned a lot. Sometimes, we have to push our creative comfort zone a bit.
Hey , that’s pretty cool. I was thinking the top could be plexi glass and you would have a better view . Awesome project 👍
That worked out pretty well Billy! I've also seen it done having a shaft sticking through one end connected to the work piece with the other end chucked in a drill turning the work piece against the rotation of the blade. Do whatcha gotta do to do whatcha gotta do!! All the best buddy.
Inspiration for a lathe purchase....
Great idea!
I’m just starting to get into wood working. This jig and technique is freaking awesome. Love the ingenuity.
Appreciate it. It's great to try something completely different. That's how we all grow, regardless of how we've been at it.
Wow, I can’t believe it actually worked!
You and me both!
It worked! Interesting idea for sure. You could fasten the same type of jig over the router table maybe?
I totally dig that idea!
Nice idea
There are similar videos for jigs to make fat dowels that obviously use the other axis.
That would be a much faster way to cut down to a cylinder. Then you could switch to this jig to add the detail in this axis.
Think this would be really cool with clear piece of acrylic for the top piece so that you could more easily see what you're doing
Nicely done dude! Now my brain is already thinking about ways to make one with adjustable side wings for different widths/lengths...
Oh I'm sure you can make one way better than this. But as a proof of concept it ain't bad.
@@NewtonMakes Ain't bad? No my friend, this is awesome.
This is too cool man! What a great idea, especially by challenging yourself to do something that you don’t have a tool for! I love finding unique ways to use what I have instead of purchasing hundreds to thousands of dollars in new tools. How long did it take for you to make the jig?
Great job man!
There are probably a dozen different ways to use a table saw to make a shapely object, but I didn't watch any videos. I wanted to think about the problem in a vacuum and see what happens. Probably 20 minutes. I spent more time digging through my cans of bolts than I did with construction.
how about attaching a power drill instead of manual rotation and letting the jig slide in the other axis and be able to lock along the sled
That might work. I'm sure there are a few ways to accomplish the task. 👍
Macomb? Are you in Louisiana?
