Yeah! I started learning the guitar this year, at 38, due to the Covid19. Home office and no more commuting by subway gives me a lot of free time to practice. My teacher says I'm progressing quickly and I'm at lesson "Andante" p. 41-42 by Henrique Pinto. So proud of m'self, for someone soooo uncoordinated... lol! Foo Fighters' songs are my motivators to keep learning new chords and rhythm! And Kiko for his wise advice :) what matters is the drive. Why do you wanna play, you know. I picked up the guitar when i was 22 years old and i have been playing for over 17 years , it actually depends what kind of playing level you want to achieve technically with the instrument, depends on the genre of your playing. But the short answer to the question at 13:15 is it's never too late to learn the instrument, only set a goal what you like to play and express through the instrument and it will clarify you how much time it would take you to achieve that goal. It's only late when your on the death bed.
You're right. We need to kill the idea that guitar is not important unless you are some improvisational virtuoso. It's really about your own enjoyment and the bonus is if people like it. Too much weight on technique fed by youtube rather than entertainment. Kiko understands this even though he is a technician.
@@SanDimas234 exactly...and anyways, if you think about most bands, many of their best albums were recorded when they had only a few years of playing guitar, so even if you start at 50, by the time you're 60 (provided you dedicate enough time to it), you'll be able to play most stuff from your favorite artists.
Totally agree it is never too late to start learning to play the guitar. All depends what level you want to get to. For example if you want to play Kiko stuff or Paul Gilbert, then you need to have a plan. Get a decent teacher and practice every day. After about 9 to 12 months you and your teacher will know if you got what it takes to get to that level. It could take you 2 to 3 years or 5 years. However if you just want to be able to play classic songs , say chords and sing along to Bruce Springsteen, Beatles, Etc then you will be able to do that quite quickly. Again practice often and consistently with a good teacher or online course you will get there quickly. Finally the reason why it is often said that it is harder to learn something new when you get older is life takes over. By this we mean responsibilities creep in and take over. This could be your job or career, starting a family. Other priorities you may have like going to the gym or doing another hobby. But remember it is not impossible or hard, just depends how you prioritise and dedicate yourself to learning the guitar compared to other things in your life.
@@mauriciogago4465 If your practice routine is structured ( focus, no noodling, stop and take a break when you lose focus instead of pushing yourself) you will cut it in half and make it 5 years.
Q&A: what's it like touring with Lamb of God and Trivium? Both awesome bands/musicians and would love to see some behind the scenes interaction with them.
I too started at the age of around 19-20. I broke my guitar 2 years after I started learning and stopped playing for about 5 years after that. Fast forward from 2013 to 2018, I got myself a new inexpensive guitar (but it was kinda expensive for me because of our currency), few months after that, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and I don't go out much after that except for work, so that means I have a lot of free time. Decided use the free time to relearn the stuffs I used to know and learn new stuffs that I didn't know like basic music theory knowledge. I too had dreams of becoming a professional musician, but now, all I want to do is to just put as much time & effort as I could on the guitar and most importantly to just have fun with the instrument, even if I might not be able to be a professional musician. The advice I could give to Boyle would be, spend more time practicing and don't browse too much social media. Whenever we see a young kid who can play a million times better than us average players on Instagram or RUclips, self doubt would kick in and negativity would feed on them. I'm now 30yo, but this time I won't let my age or anything else stopping me from trying to learn the songs I've been wanting to learn or at least try writing my own stuffs, even if it's simple. I'm more obsessive than ever when it comes to learning about music in general nowadays. If there's an advice I could give to my 22yo self that broke the guitar, I would tell him: "Don't give up just yet, there is still time. And as long as you're willing to put in the effort, you too can make it. Everybody starts from zero and even your heroes struggled at one point." Also, thank you Kiko, for being ever inspiring.
I've been only playing for just under a year now and I'm 34, learning to play Guitar is the best decision I've ever made - not only did it fill the void of giving up old hobbies that had become more habbits but I'm also more healthier in body and mind. My family and friends can tell that I've changed alot this year and are incredibly happy for me, I'm also influencing others to seek fulfillment 🔥🤟 Ps. I have 3 little ones at home and they take up alot of my time, I've found a many ways to practice almost everyday so i feel I'm getting better all the time - which is important because it's what makes me come back tomorrow ❤
Question Kiko: I love all your albums (solo, Angra, etc) and one particular part I look forward to is your acoustic playing. Is there any chance of doing an classic acoustic guitar album?
6:32 kiko! The question was about the distance to the frets, not the neck, like distance in the x axis, not z. At the start i also used to play in the middle of the space between frets, then i saw a video by brandon acker talking about that and how much better intonation you get by playing near the fret. It took me like a month of exercises to retrain my hands, but its worth it.
I definitely agree that learning an instrument isn't that much about age, it's about how much time you can dedicate to learning it. Sure, as a kid your brain (and body) is more elastic which makes learning easier, but that doesn't mean that you can't learn a new skill as an adult. I picked up the guitar at the age of 13 but started practicing properly only at 19 and learning music theory at the age of 23. The piano I started learning at an age of 24. Now I'm 27 and studying music theory and composition at a University.
It is never too late. If you really want something just keep plugging away at it. Be serious, be professional and be willing to make the required sacrifices to support what you want when faced with those choices.
A video from your guitar tech's perspective of handling a string break in the middle of a song (switching guitars and getting the other re-strung and back to action) would be cool. Love the videos!
He was older than that from what I heard. I think he joined Judas Priest at 26- could be wrong, but what really impressed me is he started getting technical and doing sweeping after he was 40 years old
Eric Clapton was 13 when he got an acoustic guitar but he found it difficult and therefore lost interest. At 15 he was inspired by the blues and picked up the guitar again and practised hard.
I'm 47 and started a year ago. Recently I actually signed up for lessons as I wasnt progressing as fast as i thought i should be. We will see how this goes. Wish me luck!
I think it is so awesome that you (Kiko) spend some much time reaching out to your fans. Espeically for guitar players like myself. I have never seen someone as big as you (Megadeth!!!) that stays in touch with their fans. I really appreciate your humility and kindness. Your family raised you right and must be proud.
Your tips and advice are the most down to earth and these tips work with working with yourself, mental health and so. Try to improve daily but dont whip yourself if you skip a day or stumble, instead, congratulate yourself when you pick yourself up and try again. A master has failed more than the beginner has even tried
good answer for stringing a floyd. people also purchase an adjustable stop type thing that you screw in between your springs and that allows you to change all strings at one time.
Played piano all my life, and always wanted to play the guitar but my parents had me playing the cello instead. Finally at the age of 29 I got my first acoustic and electric guitars. How I wish I had learned guitar instead of the cello, but all I can do is move forward from here. At least we have access to such inspirational people such as Kiko here!
Great video, as far as being to old. Im 52 and keep improving. I love playing and that's what matters. Improved a ton just this year. 19, you have many years ahead of you. Don't compare yourself to others just keep improving your own skills.
About string change with a floating bridge, the simplest and fastest way is to block the trem withanything that woth damage it, then change the strings, stretch them, tune them, stretch until they're ok. Tune perfectly with the bridge blocked at the correct position, remove the block and adjust with the screws in the back until the lowest string is perfectly tune again. Seems long but can be done in 10 minutes when you have the correct block ;) Thanks again for all the works Kiko.
tip for changing strings w/ a floating trem quickest way.. install locking tuners. Block the trem, do one string at a time, cause it helps keep the trem balanced rather than removing all strings at once.
I’m waiting for more rehearsals videos. I like real videos like your regular time, how everything is set up before a show, is awesome to see hard work before big show 🇵🇦
Oh boy! When I was a teenager I was about 20 years old I started playing the electric guitar, for some reason I stopped playing the guitar between the ages of 15 and 20, I resumed it from 21 to 26 I was in various projects but nothing serious, until now I am 32 years old I'm about to turn 33 and I've been releasing albums on my own for 2 and a half years, for music there is no age it depends on what you want, if it's just fame or money your motivation, maybe you need to think more, art is art. Good luck if you want to follow this path, it is hard but it is worth every moment. Enjoy it, do not compare yourself, the technique does not make one better than the other, but the discourse that is given with the music.
Good sir, your music saved my life. I just want to thank you for the sound you make for us to enjoy. May God bless you and yours every day! Your humble fan, Robert
Hey Kiko, thanks for answering my question! 😊 I do understand how it can seem a silly idea being too old at 19, I’m probably just over thinking it ahah. Thanks again Kiko and keep killing it !🤘
I'm almost 40 now. While I started at around 15 or 16 (i think) I had lost my way of being a guitar player once I started being an adult and having all the responsibilities at I think around the 26/27 age. Started playing again in 2017 age 36 and tried to catch up with the times. Surprised myself that I could still improve to how my playing is now! Still lots and lots to learn, ways to improve and yeah, never too late to pursue your passion! Really love the advice and also Kiko you're an awesome, inspiring and humorous person!!! haha! Grew up listening to Megadeth and would really love to see you, Dave and the rest of the band live!
Hi Kiko, well just want to say thank you for all the effort in all your classes, and workshops, all the tips shared in videos. I've been a fan since the Rebirth album, but actually until I started Guitarhacks 1 year ago I really really noticed I 'm getting better. In one year I see my pinky finger doesn't fly anymore, and I can play songs that before seemed impossible. I'm not the fastest there is, but I can play much cleaner and thanks to you now I know how to practice and compose some own songs. Thank you man.
I have an RG550. It does takes a little to get used to changing strings on it. And you are right, I change one string at a time. They do make a block you can put on the bridge and do all six stings. Set up and tuning is a bear when doing all six at the same time. But that Ibanez is my favorite to play. So versatile.
That thumbnail picture for this video ages you pretty good :) As for the "Too Old" thing, I've been "Playing" guitar for 30 years but never improved. Thanks to the Pandemic I figured I'd really apply myself on Theory and over all guitar playing and made a lot of improvement. So yea never too old :)
Same story here : played guitar with not much results for years and at 45, decided to practice seriously, particularly over the last 18 months. My playing level has improved to a level that I thought I would never be able to achieve!
Kiko, As a professional touring musician, can you do a video explaining what all you do to maintain good playing condition and health? Have you ever experienced any physical conditions that interfered with your playing and what did you do to overcome them? Thanks.
Hi Kiko! I’m honored to have made it into one of your videos and your answer was awesome! And yes, it’s Victoria haha. I had a good laugh watching you try to say my username. Coming to see you in a few days in Boston! 🖤
At 49 I started when covid hit ..I always wanted to but parents would not let me.then a got married had kids.i am so glad I did .now all I think about is guitars and gear..
I'm a FOH engineer. When I was touring my pre show ritual was to Brush my teeth, floss and use mouthwash. Don't know how I exactly got on to that but I did. Also to the 19 year old person. Playing music knows no age unless you physically can't play.
Question for your next video: When did you start concerning yourself with tone? Style is one thing, but when was tone becoming important to your over all guitar style? For instance, trying different amplifiers, pedals, etc. Getting your unique sound.
Question to Kiko Hello Kiko, a long time ago I participated in your MasterClass in Bordeaux "France", for the album "No Gravity" (classes, photos, autographs ... the dream!!!), I was young and you too. Today I'm a father of four children. I wanted to ask you the following question: -What influence do your children, your family, have on your professional life, on your inspirations of music pieces etc.? Thanks to you Kiko and have a nice day.
I think this pandemic has taught people the importance of multiple streams of income, unfortunately having a job doesn't mean security rather having different investments is the real deal.

A questão é, onde vc quer chegar?
Q-A: are you excited to come to Portugal next year?? What do you think of the bands that are going to be present in VOA festival?
Alguma ajuda?
I used to be disappointed when I saw myself playing and my fingers never looked like they were doing much. I thought my hands looked boring because I saw other people with fingers moving so much. Then I saw Yngwie Malmsteen and I couldn't believe he could be so precise and make so much sound and his fingers hardly move at all! That made me feel better.
I think the question about placing your fingers close to the frets asks about why you put your fingers closer to the fret wire instead of in the center between two fret wires. I hope I'm explaining this right. When you put your fingers closer to the fret write you get better tone (that's what I noticed) and bending is easier and sounds cleaner.
Hi Kiko! I’d like to know more about how your time codes work. You’ve mentioned them in other videos. I know your guitar effects pedal switches based on those time codes. Can you make a video with the tech that can explain that process in more detail in a way I can understand? Thanks Kiko.
Boa tarde. Rock on.
Q: I know you've been playing music for a long while now, but do you still have a bucket list of countries you'd like to play in? I'm from South Africa and I would give anything to see Megadeth live!
The only downside to starting anything late is that you're gonna have to put in more time, instead of practicing a little on the weekends you're gonna need to do it every day for many hours a day if you wanna catch up to the level of experience and practice you'd have practicing every now and then from the age of say 15
Hello kiko!! What do you do after playing guitar? I mean do you wipe your strings? Because I too use the same string And in one week the string are all rusted.Even I practice full day...
Started at the age of 15 in school, played for few yrs only and now i don't have much time for practice so I haven't played much for 2 yrs :( now Will try to start again whenever i get the time
I started playing two months ago after 20 years since i sold the guitar i had, i have 42 now, i don´t find it any diferent, i just do it as a hobby, the key for me is ask yourself if yo do it as a hobby or you want to be a professional. If the goal is to be a professional whith the tons of information we have and hours of dedication being constant, i belive these days yo can do it in a few years. Some dacades ago it was much more difficult.
I got friends who started building their brands online in their 50s and are experiencing awesome success. It's never too late nowadays.

JUST MAKE YOURSELF AWESOME AND TALENTED and everyone will want MORE!
In one of my bands ("Twin Towers"), our frontman singer / talker was 71 years old!
But he was VERY INTERESTING and quirky and funny!
Hi~bro , you are same as me . I start learning since 21 years old. I hope I can keep playing just like you.
Everybody starts from zero and even your heroes struggled at one point."
Also, thank you Kiko, for being ever inspiring.
I've been only playing for just under a year now and I'm 34, learning to play Guitar is the best decision I've ever made - not only did it fill the void of giving up old hobbies that had become more habbits but I'm also more healthier in body and mind. My family and friends can tell that I've changed alot this year and are incredibly happy for me, I'm also influencing others to seek fulfillment 🔥🤟
Ps.
El abuelo Kiko en la miniatura.
Jaja si xd
the only way to make him old
XD
I'm 41 and started to play drums bro. Never give up your dreams.
Kiko, thanks for remaining connected with us while on tour.
Kiko, you're a really genuine guy with some solid advice. Also, hope you guys can play Western Canada in an upcoming tour! Keep up the good work!
Agree, really appriciated someone asking that question!! ⭐
Kiko, I'll see you on 22nd of September in Rogers, AR.
Yes! Tips for a Floyd Rose string change video would be great. Obrigado!
If I remember correctly, Glenn Tipton was around 18'ish when he started playing guitar. So never too old!
Seems long but can be done in 10 minutes when you have the correct block ;)
Thanks again for all the works Kiko.
tip for changing strings w/ a floating trem quickest way.. install locking tuners.
I have your signature guitar and I am a begginer, PLEASE do the floating bridge video!!!
use the free time to practice!! because when you are older things might change
Good sir, your music saved my life. I just want to thank you for the sound you make for us to enjoy. May God bless you and yours every day!
Your humble fan,
Robert
Q: What are your thoughts on Chris Poland's style of playing? And also would love to see you play Good Mourning/Black Friday!
Just pure class you are sir! Terveiset Suomesta!
The great Spanish guitarist Segovia was playing well into his 80's. He could still draw massive crowds even as an old man.
You are such a down to earth and wonderful human being Kiko
That thumbnail picture for this video ages you pretty good :)
As for the "Too Old" thing, I've been "Playing" guitar for 30 years but never improved.
+1
@@scottyecora any particular teachers or guitarists that helped you?
I like the saying "Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect".
Kiko,
As a professional touring musician, can you do a video explaining what all you do to maintain good playing condition and health? Have you ever experienced any physical conditions that interfered with your playing and what did you do to overcome them? Thanks.
wow would love to see videos of the routines and time spent before the show so cool thanks great stuff!
Saw you in Phoenix new superfan
You were playing right in front of us so mind blown
Thank you!!
It's great that you guys jam on the tour, maybe good ideas for a song come up
Chris Adler from Lamb of God started playing drums at 25 and he's a beast of a drummer
pack of cards for changing the strings on a floyd, doesnt damage the finish and you can add as many as you need to block it off
I'm a FOH engineer. When I was touring my pre show ritual was to Brush my teeth, floss and use mouthwash. Don't know how I exactly got on to that but I did. Also to the 19 year old person. Playing music knows no age unless you physically can't play.
Your english improvement living among natives is very impressive comparing with videos from two/three yers ago.
Question for your next video: When did you start concerning yourself with tone? Style is one thing, but when was tone becoming important to your over all guitar style? For instance, trying different amplifiers, pedals, etc. Getting your unique sound.
Can't wait to see you guys next week in Jersey! It's going to make my whole year!
Kiko, I saw your performance in Auburn and you awesome! When hangar 18 came on and you ran out it was just unbelievable. Keep rockin🤘!
Thank you!!
Yes! I played pro back late sixties early seventies.
Would love to see how you change your strings!
You are the best thank you for inspiration 💯💯😎🤘
Just saw you in Auburn. Really great job. It was very inspiring to watch you guys play those complex riffs
Question to Kiko
Hello Kiko,
a long time ago I participated in your MasterClass in Bordeaux "France", for the album "No Gravity" (classes, photos, autographs ... the dream!!!), I was young and you too. Today I'm a father of four children. I wanted to ask you the following question: -What influence do your children, your family, have on your professional life, on your inspirations of music pieces etc.? Thanks to you Kiko and have a nice day.
I have a question for you kiko, do you still get nervous before shows, or are you always ready to play live without being nervous?
You seem like a very cool dude Kiko, Keep up the great work.
Kiko great advice. I have a minor in classical guitar performance and never get to play due to adult responsibilities.
I think this pandemic has taught people the importance of multiple streams of income, unfortunately having a job doesn't mean security rather having different investments is the real deal.
The economic hardship, recession, unemployment and loss of jobs caused by covid 19 pandemic is enough to push people into financial ventures.
Well i'm so happy i just got into crypto trading and I made my first profit,i wish i knew about crypto earlier i would have made a lot of money by now.
I also got a chance to benefit from his services a few months ago and it has been a very smooth experience,it's amazing how accurate his market analysis are, and how good and patient he is with newbies.
I started trading with Jake Matthew as the pandemic lockdown increased, which greatly affected the economy.
His trading signals and strategy has been useful even to me as an old trader and mostly newbies out there.... I'm still earning daily and growing my wallet monthly with expert Jake daily signals.
The eternal lament of the guitarist and judo player: "I wish I had started earlier..."
Thanks so much Kiko, interesting questions & great answers. Thanks to Megadeth and you for posting shows for people in other countries to see. Best wishes out on the road!! 🖤🏴☠️⚡⚡⚡⚡
Boy you do look like the fonzi!!! Especially with the old face!!! 😅🖤👍you have kickass show in Chicago tonight!!!! 🎸⚡⭐🏴☠️
amazing video kiko, love from india ❤
🤘🤘🤘
A questão é, onde vc quer chegar?
Tony Stark and I, have the same t-shirt as you , definitely a good choice
Kiko turned into a nice Brazilian grandpa in the thumbnail.
Haha Kiko got me with the old man filter in the thumbnail. Actually scared the crap outta me for a second
Q-A: are you excited to come to Portugal next year?? What do you think of the bands that are going to be present in VOA festival?
Alguma ajuda?
Awesome! full of very interesting informations!thank you! nice shirt!
I’ll be there in Tinley Park tomorrow!
Very Informative. Thank you Kiko
Great answers Kiko, hope to catch one of your Midwest shows in September. Do you have a favorite guitarist/Metal/rocknroll biography?
Great to hear that you use Cubase. I just found you a few days ago. I think it's amazing that you are left handed but you play guitar right handed!
When you put your fingers closer to the fret write you get better tone (that's what I noticed) and bending is easier and sounds cleaner.
you are an absolute champ, bro
Would love to see some videos of the sound checks. That always interests me. Thanks Kiko You're always a cool, down to earth guy.
Kiki your the coolest man!
Hi Kiko! I’d like to know more about how your time codes work. You’ve mentioned them in other videos. I know your guitar effects pedal switches based on those time codes. Can you make a video with the tech that can explain that process in more detail in a way I can understand? Thanks Kiko.
Please, would love to see a re-string with a floyd rose :D
Boa tarde. Rock on.
that t-shirt though. Thanks Kiko. you rule
Thank you!!
Will we great to see the set up of the pick ups and the strings with floating bridge.
Hello kiko!!
What do you do after playing guitar?
I mean do you wipe your strings?
Because I too use the same string And in one week the string are all rusted.Even I practice full day...
Started at the age of 15 in school, played for few yrs only and now i don't have much time for practice so I haven't played much for 2 yrs :( now
Will try to start again whenever i get the time
Hi kiko i've asked this once, but what's your opinion on Chuck Shuldiner?
Also you're my biggest inspiration, keep up your wonderful work
What a band death where chuck died way too young.
