- The final ardennes showdown and the third monument of the year, Liege-Bastogne-Liege featured a strong startlist but with the notable omissions of Wout van Aert, Mathieu van der Poel and Tom Pidcock. Roglic was the favourite in the betting markets but Tadej Pogacar and Alaphilippe would be tough to beat after the former was denied a chance at Fleche and Alaphilippe found his mojo back on the Mur.

"This video has got to be under 20min, so I can't show the full rear wheel change" - absolutely savage
I timed a Bora wheel change in LBL -with a battery drill - at 17 seconds.
was a funny line.
I love ur dry humor, that was to funny but true
People don't think disc brakes be like the be, but they done do.
LR firing shots at that UAE mechanic.
Probably more about the slow wheel change due to the disc brakes
By birth, I am a Pogacar fan, but how can't you love Rolga?! Such a class act & love seeing him win.
Dude! Do NOT make us choose between Pogačar and Roglič, we almost have a civil war in Slovenia because of that :D
lol
Some people who don't cycling think it's Doncic the real star, but there are 2 guys ahead of him I'm afraid...
Could be worse. In Ukraine, they are waiting for a coming real war
but the most friendly civil war in history of human kind
@@raskolnikov1242 that being said doncic going "fouling in love with you" to the female ref is one of the greatest jokes ive seen in sports for a while
Can we take a moment to appreciate, how much Lanterne stepped up his game during the past two years? I hope, this channel will turn out to be sufficiently profitable in order not to lose him to the established media outlets!
My heart says, Roglic.
My mind says, Pogacar
Love with your heart, use your head for everything else.
It's staggering how far you've come, in such a short space of time, from doing random classic race commentaries in a dark room, to creating the best cycling analysis channel on YT 🙏
Pogacar is looking like he will absolutely dominate GC's and hill classics the next years. Deepest of bows to Roglic, but pogi is set to be one of the all time greats, without a doubt.
Remco
I think MDVP has way more explosive power than the pog
Here I am again with more flexing to do, last week Thursday I was riding home from school and all of the sudden I saw a few quick step guys go past, 5 guys in normal kit and 1 in world champion kit. Checked strata later and saw that devenyns drove a training ride (only 27km so prob just to loosen up the legs) but yea Im 99.9% sure that I’ve cycled behind allaphilipe
That’s cool! How often does that happen?!
Nono flexing would be you saying you rode ahead of allaphilipe who was in a bigger group
@@philipmeisterl I mean he nearly drove into someone else who was going the other direction lol
now if you led him out in the sprint, NOW that would be something ;)
@@foldupaudi7645 next time this happens (aka never) i will try to stay ahead of them lol
Team Roglič all the way. Because of his unbelievable career story and never-give-up attitude. Plus he's simply a class act and a Sportsman with a capital S.
sportSman?
@@philipmeisterl Sorry for the misspelling but I see what you did there. :)
My respect for thiccboi Primoz Roglic is as high as it can be because the man just exudes grace and class. But Pogacar is the better bike rider, and also pretty damn classy. Must be nice being a Slovenian cycling fan right now!
yep🇸🇮🇸🇮🇸🇮
At any given race I couldn't pick between Primoz & Tadej. But considering their ages, it's insane how good both physically and psychologically mature Tadej is - off the charts!
Glad that you mentioned Pogacar's outstanding parcours knowledge. A true professional, he practised bike changes and rode Planche des Belles Filles several times when preparing for the Tour, I believe. Roglic seems to have a more casual attitude, which I also like. It might cost him some success, but people are different and that's a good and very entertaining thing.
There is NO “team Roglic” OR “team Pogacar”. They are both so likable that if you fancy one, then you fancy other one as well. Great guys. 🙌
absolutely correct
The moviestar DS comment really ended me hahahaha I can only imagine what they were screaming at him through that radio
I am Roglic fan, but I think Pogacar is stronger. I like Roglic becasue sometimes he is crazy and upredictable :)
ugh .. this
His interviews lately have been pretty hilarious too
I think he is unpredictable because he came to the sport late. Can't give a specific reason, he just hasn't had "the rules" drilled into him since day one.
roglic is a ""why not eh?" type of guy and i like that
@@benjaminauer Sure is better than watching the racers stare down their power meters.
Mate I subscribe to GCN race pass and don’t get me wrong it’s brilliant, but your recaps are just a whole other level of race insight compared to the highlight reels on gcn. I bow to you sir. Please never stop!
Pog is just on a another level very smart and very strong. But I would like to see roglic win tdf
Don't forget Pogacar had an unexpected weekend off last week, so maybe that had something to do with it.
@@linesided He wasn't riding amstel anyway. He only unexpected missed the fleche wallone on wednesday due to covid protocol, but he did a monster training instead. He's capable of winning every big one day and stage race on the calender, incredible.
@@koenverhelst5165 good infos, thanks for that!
Me too
Pog first TdF winner to take a Monument since Hinault in the 70s ... That is some stat !!
Winning as the last TdF winner. In between them, Nibali won the TdF in 2014 and then afterwards Lombardia twice and San Remo.
@@komazec Ah ok. Found it hard to believe. But yeah Nibali is the only other one that's won TdF and a Monument. I looked at Roche and Lemond, they must have come close, but never did it.
Fignon won San Remo twice in the late 80s after winning the TdF in '83 and '84.
@@komazec Of course. How did I forget that.
Bjarne riis won the Amstel gold in 1997 as defending tdf champ
I'm a fan of both Roglic & Pogacar but rooting for Roglic come TDF solely on his age and need for redemption
"Show them your Cohones" - Legend LR
A tope!
If you aren't going to shout that regardless of race situation, you don't belong in the movistar team car 🤣
Cojones.... learn to spell...
Thought this was a reference to the rear-view of the Carapaz quasi-supertuck when I initially read it.
@@bobbycorcoran1661 LMAO
I think Mohoric is the best Slovenian. Only the best athletes have to be limited by a rule change ;) He did invent the Supertuck :D
Very true. Junior worlds road race was first time I saw him do it.
The most aerodynamic cyclist on the planet and with no fear!
I thought Hirschi pulling while poga was in last position was a brilliant move. It might have been the trigger for valverde to start his sprint early, which was the perfect scenario for poga. Also Hirschi was quicker than both Mollema and Benoot so why not?
It was probably just to ensure a top 10 finish though, and can't blame him. Were he in another team, he would have been a favorite
Ita a win win, as seen pogacar is the fastest one in the first group if hirschi gets to the group im gonna argue he might be the 4th fastest in this group but defenetly fastest out of the guys hes bringing back
So if he closes the gap they have an advantage just on pure numbers
If they attack early in first group as they did they have an avantage because pogacar was in the best position
Excellent insight, great comment. UAE has directors almost as smart as DQS. I look forward to seeing them add more strong riders in the future.
@@garypremo Agreed. Pogacar would probably not have won the TDF without Allan Peiper.
Totally agree, camera angles are tricky, at that point, Hirschi knew he'll not get to the main group, so it was a different race for minor places already, so he tried to make the most of it.
I believe Pogacar and Roglic will give amazing scenes for us fans to be blown away!
Hope this "fight" lasts a lot.
I'm probably team Pogacar, but want Roglic to win TDF this year. After last year it would be tragic if he never won TDF.
Agree Pogacar is the most complete rider globally. Hard to deny that! Tour wins + one-day wins.
Dope
I love that Pogačar is racing a varied program, and that he is the first Tour champion to win at Liege since The Badger is fantastic company. I'm a huge fan, and I do think he is the best out there right now. I am so happy he didn't get dragged over to Ineos!
I second this, Inios thinks that money can buy you TdF
There's 1 or 2 threats to him if they develop fully. Remco evenepoel and vingegaard
Blimey you’re smashing it at the moment LR! 👏
“this video has be shorter than 20 minutes so there’s no time to show the whole wheel change” hahaha
I really want to be Team Roglic. Probably mostly due to his story. But I think, this spring, Pogacar has proven how dominant he's likely going to be over the next 10 years.
I read the sprint from Alaphilippe the same way you do. But Pogačar is a phenomenon. We live in a great time for competitive cycling!
Team Pogacarmstrong!! Kidding pogacar is one hell of a cyclist! And i love his expressive and bold but on the other hand humble nature.
This is one of the best recaps I have seen! Good stuff.
LR, this is absolutely the best race coverage available! These quick videos are amazing! Thank you. Team Tadej!
I'm team Roglič because when he exploded onto the scene, he was basically the only Slovenian rider who could contend with the best. It's weird that only a couple of years later we got Pogačar, who's basically better in every aspect and I think plenty other Slovenians are confused by that as well.
"can't show the whole rear wheel change" - haha good one. Honestly, these old school stages are relics now. Just lop 100km off the damn thing and make it more fun for everyone.
Just incredible commentary. Everything else falls flat in terms of pure content. I can't watch anything else with such a complete breakdown. I enjoy cycling so much more because of your particular talents, Lanterne. You are just awesome.
Thanks for your coverage. Helpful. Yes, I liked the photo at about 2:05 also, but I cannot say exactly why. Like you, it caught my eye.
Thanks....both of those riders are tough! Great teams. Be safe !
Pogacar is more nimble then Roglic. Rogluc sometimes make clumsy things, Pogacar rarely. and bedude that Pog has much. Much better team support. His team is usually there when he need it.
Great to finally see excellent commentary on Cycling! Please keep up the good work!
I like both Slovenians and have been team Roglic, but now I'm not so sure. Great race from Gaudu and I really feel for Woods, he is just always there in the final of an Ardennes but doesn't have the kick to win. I'm always amazed you put together such concise but thorough recaps so quickly. I love the dry humor. Keep 'em coming.
Mate, I really appreciate how you always make an effort to pronounce the name of the riders correctly! Of course, it's hard to get it completely right, but I would give your "Vingegaard" at 2:40 a solid 8/10. Big ups from Denmark!
Definitely Team POG here! Sending Formolo up the road to create the lead group of 5 and following Alaphillipe’s wheel in the sprint were classy moves. His talent is obvious but tactical intelligence and nous are what sets him apart from his countryman. Roglic is a legend but tends to rely on his team and good placing/power rather than cunning! It makes for great racing! Thanks for these breakdowns LR, your commentary is always fascinating.
2:07 Indeed that is a fantastic photo!
Pogacar is a better all-rounder than Roglic for sure, but I want Roglic to win the TDF this year.
It’s nice to see so called GC riders not being “one trick ponies” and riding & contending in the Classics!!! This is where Froome & Bernal get a thumbs down from me!! Sick of hearing “GC” this “GC” that...ALL the greats rode the grand tours AND the classics!! So fair play to both Pogacar & Roglic 👏🏻
It might look like Pogačar won the race but Valverde actually won after the race organisers accidentally placed the photo finish 300m from the line.
Hahahaha, that might have been so if Valverde was from Belgium 😉🤣🤣🤣
5:20 Bauke Mollema's headshake and resignation as the sprint begins in the second group down the road is a killer to watch.
They are both solid riders, I can't pick because I like them both. Wouldn't mind having either one of them on my team
Great review there LR!! It was shocking team management that Ineos got zero results from this race for the amount of effort they put in at one stage!!
This video has got to be under 20 minutes so I can't show the full rear wheel change. Completely straight voice. Love it!
Poglić vs Roglić. Can't wait to see them race more.
Same for Evenepoel.
Great recap. Thanks.
Nice recap! Only comment I want to make is that they were actually sprinting with a side/tailwind, which was coming from the north. You can also notice that from the flags at around 5.40 into the video.
Pogacar is incredible. He's such a complete rider and seems down to earth enough not to let the success ruin him. He's a joy to watch. Question for LR, if Alaphillipe had sprinted left would he not have blocked Woods or Gadu and been more likely to be in trouble for deviation off his line? And giving Pog even more scope to come past on the right?
Pogacar is simply the best rider of the world and there's no discussion about it!
I wonder why he’s only number two in pro rankings then?
I have been Team UAE 🇦🇪 and Team Pogačar from the beginning. Great win.
Pogachar is really a complete rider. GT, classics, ITT he can do them all. UAE made a huge mistake signing one-time Vuelta champion paying huge salary, but makes amend by signing Pogacar.
The final order was the inverse to the leadout , showing the decisive impact of the wind. Perhaps Hirshi was wanting too put pressure so the sprint would be launched early, which would benefit Pogacher who he could see well placed at the back. Very clever.
Another great video!
Well done.... As an avid cyclist and fan you do a very good job. Love the content!
as an all rounder i think i appreciate Pogi's skills better, like, this man can do fucking everything (and do it extraordinarily well, at that), but come on, I can't chose one over the other, Rogla is just as much of a fucking king
I think TDF 2020 made it evident that TJV is the best team, and Pogacar is the best individual cyclist in the pro peloton.
Man these GC contenders are so young lately unbelievable
Team ARANBURU! 🙌
Benji, no...
We're going to have to stage an intervention sooner or later..
Matron!
thanks for cycling news / race.
Straigt fire from LR
As much as I like to see how aggressive and a complete rider Pogi is, the thing that sticks in my mind and will always have a question mark of suspicion hanging over his every pedal
stroke is the Mauro Gianetti connection.
I am always amazed how riders can get back on to the peloton after having issues (mechanical, crashes, etc.). Sure, they can use the cars, but I imagine it is quite the effort, especially in the latter stages of the race. The guys in the front of the peloton are riding tempo, so you have to ride at least a bit harder than that to catch up.
Wonder how much it takes out of a rider. Seems like not too much in Pogacar's case ;)
Great vid but i think you undersold the work woods put in after the break was established
They are both crazy. Pogacar is probably the better rider? It's photo finish with Roglic at this moment though.
Happy for Pogačar but sad that Valverde didn't get a W on his birthday!
He has quite a few wins to reflect on and amazing he is so competitive at his age! Good for the young guys to be the next Valverde (or better).
I think the only thing that Roglic has over Pogacar is his altitude climbing, and when he's on his day they are even in the TT I think.
2:12 I agree great picture. Took a screenshot.
Hirschi probably knew they couldn’t catch the front group even he pulled as much as he can but at the same time wanted that 6th place.
Fortunately things are shaping up so we get to answer " Pog vs Rog?" at the Tour this year. Both have equal motivation and relevant experience, both should be in good form, and at this point I reckon the respective team support to be about equal - UAE have improved and JV seem to be missing Dumoulin.
Mike Woods has been looking good this year
Tell me lord Lanterne, how do you MANAGE to make these exactly 8:15 every time 😩
actually lol'ed at the thought of GVA in gold for the next ten years
I think pogacar is a more exciting rider and stronger overall but you can’t deny Roglic is Uber strong and respectable as well
Great coverage of a great classic season. Do you think it's possible for non-GC teams to race a Grand Tour like a series of one-day races? Can they make such a selection there and create chaos in the GC battle by forcing GC riders to use their energy everyday? Or the non mountain stages are not hard enough to do that?
I have one issue with Pogacar: Mauro Gianetti, the dirtiest man in cycling.
Roglic fan!
“Full potato” almost made me spit up my coffee!
This is the year they are closely matched. I'm afraid this is Rogla's last chance to win TDF .. As a long-time Primož fan I'm gutted but Tadej is a once in 50 years talent. Let him win another couple of Tours, then we'll really start the "greatness" debate.
In 10 years this will back on feeds
@LR it’s ‘ve con dos huevos (Bala)’ meaning ‘go with both your balls (Alejandro)’.
Pogi vs Pidcock is the question ... GC grand tours and hill classics
Hirschi chasing behind puts pressure on the other 4 to leadout the sprint faster. It allows pog to sit in. In this case the gap is too big for it to matter. If it were a smaller gap it would force one of the other 4 to ride harder on the front to not get caught. Pog could sit in with his teammate bridging. Even if Hirschi and others catch now pog has a leadout man.
So glad pogacar beat that crazy swerving frenchman in a fair sprint 👍
Pogacar is the most complete I think. But roglic is the better tt rider, so it's gonna be a great TDF.
Formolo in pink after stage 4? A boy can dream...
Pogacar with no questions at all is the best overall rider....He'll win TDF this year, and next year he'll go for Giro/Tour double, if Soccer World cup happen, they normally adds one more week in between bot Grand tours, so more recovery, just as Froome tried in 2018 and he was so close.
We need to wait for a couple of years for Remco, Bernal comes to his best, Ayuso (He'll be in UAE too) so pogacar can have real competition in the Grand tours
Valverde had to go first. He's not explosive enough right now to overcome Alaphilippe or Pogacar from the back. His only option is to go ahead, attack first, with a 4-5 metres of distance, and see if he could somehow break a gap with Woods/Gaudu.
Yes, this was the plan.
Some other years Valverde in this way escaped and won. This time not and not “expert” are screaming that he should wait or been behind.
No way.
Alright. Now we just need a video about Pagacar vs Evenepoel. Who do you Love the most, LR?
Team Rog all the way. but have to admit that Pogacar is the better and more complete rider.
@5:07 Isn't that just what Pogacar wants? He wants pressure on the front group so one of them flinches and he can get carried all the way to 75-50m into the headwinds.
I'm team Pogacar. He's on track to becoming the GOAT before he turns 25. If he keeps going 'til 30...
the only thing I know is that Slovenian water/air/food must be really special! :-P
.....u can bet it is...
I think almost every single slovenian knows Pogačar is better so everybody is rooting for Roglič
Because Roglič is simply a class act all around. Pogačar is an awesome cyclist but still a kid and maybe not as amiable as Roglič. And yes, we Slovenians love to root for ones we deem to be second best.
@@pipilajn Underdogs in general :)
@@RudeCorona Always. :)
regarding the sprint and which direction Alaphilippe takes...there was enoguh space for Pogacar and he was just simply faster. Don't see a big impact there
