I must admit, I find it cringe (at this point.) It's such a massive thing to lug around. There are far better, minimalist, sleek, unique water bottle choices to choose from in the world.
Plus, way easier to steal! A thief no longer has to get ahold of your bag or purse, all they need is for you to not be paying attention to your Stanley momentarily, and now they've got your cash, credit cards, ID, phone, keys, etc.
These things should always be kept safely in your purse, fanny pack or pocket..not out in the open like that, (all for the sake of being aesthetically pleasing/properly accessorized lol)

To play devils advocate on the nails- I purchased an LED lamp about 10 years ago, I literally still use it. I purchased base and top coat I’ve had for probably
5+ years? The acetone and alcohol lasts months as well. The only thing I can admit I’ve “over consumed” is new colors, which I don’t buy anymore since I’ve changed my consumption habits. At home nails to me is like anything else, you can go overboard or you can be pretty minimal about it and use and love the products for years.

My mom works in a salon and she would always give her their half empty bottles. I guess it's too annoying to tilt the bottle to dip the brush at that level so the salon just tosses them. We're talking hundreds of bottles. I would get several bottles of the same exact brand and color so I would combine them to get "full" bottles. It's insane how much would go to waste.

I will thrift halloween items and look for them online all year and then only buy a couple of new items when stores start stocking them. Currently they're on the lawn with swim trunks and a giant flamingo innertube. They redecorate them every month. The best part is unless one of their accessories is damaged or just doesn't survive storage, they use the same things season after season, which makes sense because finding clothing and accessories for skelletons that big can't be easy! But the way I've become better at not consuming as much is thrifting decor, diying, and making a list of things I really want so I don't impulse buy. Love this video Shelby! Halloween lover here! I agree with you for the most part and I avoid buying cheap plastic Halloween crap but I do like to add a couple of high-quality spooky items to my (year round) decor if I find something that really appeals to me, and that will essentially last me for the rest of my life. The trouble is that stores put out Halloween decor in July and August. By September it’s pretty much all gone and the stores are full of Christmas. So anyone who wishes to buy anything for Halloween has no choice but to buy it in the height of the miserable hot summer. We really need to get stores to put things out during the appropriate season, but they don’t seem to want to do that anymore. :-(

    • @poisonisley
      @poisonisley 3 месяца назад +5

Very good point. It's like the holiday never happened when it's only the beginning of October and the stores all have Christmas items out. It kills the fun. I don't mind as much for Halloween, since there's not a holiday right before it that the decorations would be in the way of. However, like you said, it does make people have to shop earlier when it's not even close to being fall weather.

    • @sarasynfox
      @sarasynfox 2 месяца назад

Halloween orders for shops are a lot smaller because with temporary theme stores like Spirit, a lot of other stores just can't compete, so they carry a very small stock that mostly sells early to excited shoppers before the seasonal costume shops open. Having worked in a craft store during the season, a lot of people just stop buying Halloween and fall the moment Christmas hits the shelves in August. That part is somewhat consumer driven.

It’s seeing these trends that make me so glad I live in a 3rd world very poor country. I’m so far removed from these things I’m shocked to hear them!!
My “neighbors” all just barrow everything from one another. When I first got here I thought it was so weird to use this ladies plates if I had a party but now I get it. It’s great! If we have a party or wedding you just write your name on the bottom and everyone brings as many plates as you can to the event and afterwards we have a wash party. All the “neighborhoods” do this here.

Concerning the Halloween decorations: My mum always had the decorations (like one or two boxes) for each season in the attic. We would all get it down and decorate together. Especially for Halloween, the pieces would be wrapped in old newspaper, because they were all ceramics. It was so much fun to unpack them, because a lot of the times we had forgotten some of the items (and also reading the newspaper we would re-use every year was fun). A lot of the lanterns we would fix when they were broken. My mum would only get new ones, if they were unfixable. I feel like people are so obsessed with going with trends and styles that they forget that nostalgia and memory can be equally as rewarding (and that some styles don‘t go out of style)

I think what would be a good supplemental video (possibly a short) of talking about the things you can buy if you don’t spend the money on hauls. Like for example, you could have saved up for a train trip across the United States, or taking a class you’ve been wanting to take, or invested in *insert something important to them*. I believe there’s a psychological component to these hauls, either them trying to fit in and feel a part of something or trying to find happiness in material items. People like it when they feel like they are gaining something.

    • @raapyna8544

Yeah. I have an anecdote. My friends asked me to go to a bar with them last week and it was bad timing, I would have had to buy buss tickets with night fees both ways, plus a minimum of one drink, I counted that's 20 euros I could donate to Gaza. 20 euros is a quite typical donation sum for me when I have some spare money. Put in that perspective spending that money just to see my friends in the middle of the night when I could see them during the day for free felt unreasonable.
I also recently learned that you can buy quite big areas of wetlands to conserve them with little money (where I live).
Learning things like this where little money goes a long way, has put some spending habits we have to perspective. Why are we so ready to spend 50€ for a bar night or shopping (basically throwing it away) but not donate 10€ to charity, or put on savings account to buy land, or something else that has meaning in the long run? You lose the money in the short term in both cases, but the other has meaning.

I realized the other day that my sewing room is filled with a ton of fabric stash that I have never considered using (mostly given fabrics) that are seasonal. I decided to start making fabric gift wrapping and seasonal sewn items (pot holders, bowl cozies etc.) that I want to switch out with the seasons. Two birds one stone: seasonal “decor” that is functional while also sewing down my stash.
Ballet flats: there are way too many out there that yes, are uncomfortable as all get out. I have two pairs of ballet flats from SAS that are my most worn shoes, they are super comfortable for my picky feet and are great 3 season shoes in OK, dressy enough for a work event while casual enough for errands.
I am with you on the crazy waterbottle trends. I too have multiple cups and bottles that are “mine” (vs my family’s) but they also each have a specific purpose and are regularly used rather than just bring collected. I did just buy a replacement tumbler but before that I hadn’t bought a bottle or cup in 6ish years (with the exception of replacement lids).

I feel like it’s so easy to get pulled into needing the “perfect” version of something when A version will do (and ofc the perfect version probably doesn’t exist). I find myself weakest to influence when it’s something I do need but I’m looking for a functional version or a replacement and get sucked into looking for the “perfect” version. Anti-haul all holiday themed clothing, specifically for children. I see so many 4th of July themed clothing items out right now and I refuse to buy holiday themed clothing, even second hand. I know so many people who run to Old Navy to buy their new 4th of July shirts EVERY year, even though they are essentially the same. For what? A family themed Instagram picture? Hard pass. Kids essentially only wear these items once, maybe twice and it’s so wasteful and unnecessary. Dress in red, white, or blue clothing items you already own if you want to be festive. This goes for every other holiday too. Better to invest in items for you and your children that can be worn for a whole season.

I will admit i did cave in and buy nail supplies really cheaply (bezos unfortunately ;_;) bc i wanted to start making nails for my gf instead of needing to go out and get them done and you can reuse the nails bc they're press ons. As a creative though, i have to disagree (for myself at least) bc i don't think that buying art supplies is unnecessary or perpetuating overconsumption. I do know color theory though so the only colors i bought were the primaries, black, and white. I honestly do feel bad for buying so many things new ESPECIALLY from Amazon but i did try to buy them on fb marketplace first i just couldn't find what i needed. That being said i do try to be as minimal and sustainable as possible with the supplies i buy and use them on a regular basis for other projects as well but this video did bring attention to my consumption of art supplies as an artist myself. I think it was good that i got called out because now i can do better and source things in a better way. Love your videos!

Could you anti-haul travel products? I see so many videos of “MUST HAVE!!!” travel gadgets that are actually such a waste and gimmicky and I’d love to hear your take on travel products

OMG ! I’m not living in US (and also not consuming a lot so probably that my social medias are not full of those) but wtf all these trendy things … I love the video and the fact that you explain to people why it’s not ok to follow this ! I would love to see more of them 😉 Sambas are also a huge trend in Europe, unfortunately, Stanleys also. Let’s make this world better together !

If you’re going through TSA security screening how does permanent jewelry work???? This is such an impractical trend.

I am also traumatized by ballet flats and their recent return to fashion. But I will say I have two pairs I found recently in the back of my closet from years ago that I’ve been trying to wear out (they’re too ratty to donate but still in good condition) so in a way their return has given me another reason to use what I already have. I’m not huge fan of them but I can wear them to the office and then once they’re wore out ill buy something that I like better and will last me a lot longer (and hopefully resolable, I’m on a mission to learn about shoes that can be repaired lol). So at least there is that positive about this recent unfortunate trend 🤷‍♀️. As always great video!!

What I hate these days is, someone would make a video about literally anything, they could be talking about a traumatic event or losing a loved one and people would be in the comments like “where did you get your boots from”, “link for your shirt”. 😑😑😑 The brain rot is real.

Yeaaaaah, but i live in Texas and i dream of Fall/Halloween season all year. I cant stand the heat and everything that comes with it. I know "Fall" doesnt mean the weather here gets glorious but i still love it. My Halloween village is up all year long bc it makes me happy. I dont usually buy any new decor bc it took me years to figure out the style i like and im happy with what i have.

I also live in Texas. And I do think fall is my favorite season for that exact reason but I can’t just create a season with consumerism 🙃 that’s all I was trying to say. The video I mentioned that I made about that topics specifically explains it a lot better haha

Yeah I’m still thinking about the coffee… Can I just point out the fact that they don’t sell those single use plastic cups in single packs. So anyone who is buying them has to buy them in a pack of at least 50-100 (if not more) and will probably not even use all of them before they go in the trash! So the consumerism goes much further than just that one wasteful TikTok. Also, if making the TikTok is 100% necessary then why not walk into a coffee shop and ask for a single cup and lid; you can surely get that for free!

I have THOUGHTS on what we should normalize when it comes to doing your nails at home. 1. When you need to get new/replace things buy from small businesses, local if possible. I found a wonderful WOC owned shop in the closest big city. 2. Those sets of small sample size polishes in a color pallet you like because you're way more likely to use it all if it's just a bit. Then go color match the ones you love at that small business if you run out. 3. Like Shelby said, share!
I've always loved nail art and I gave it up for a while in the name of sustainability but I've decided it brings me too much joy to give up forever so this is for all the girlies in the same boat.

I think the reason Halloween decor is coming out so early is because Christmas decor keeps being pushed out earlier and earlier. I remember being in early October and the stores were already pushing out Halloween to bring in Christmas stuff.

I enjoyed your video! I am so out of the loop I had no idea some of these things existed, let alone were trendy! Wowza. I've started thrifting so much since watching your channel. I actually used to buy too few clothes because I knew it was bad for the environment but didn't know what the solution was and now I'm deep into threadUP. I can't even think of any non-underwear, non-sock clothes I've bought new in the last year... maybe 2 years?
One thing that I find funny is I decided I wanted to get a straw travel mug because I don't like tipping my head back while driving which takes my eyes off of the road... and then I found out it was trendy and ended up not buying one for a long time because I agree that trendy things are usually dumb. I do actually really like having it but I'm certainly not building a collection =]
I like doing my nails with dip powder but wow some of those people have a lot of supplies. I appreciate that you talked about not giving up things that you love and focusing on other areas and I wanted to add some nail-context in case you found it interesting. One reason I do my nails is I fidget by picking at things and having the acrylic makes them too dull to pick. I also have weak nails (even before I ever did them or when I haven't done them in months, so it's not the acrylic powder causing them to be weak) and it makes them actually durable/functional! When I bought a dip powder set I did the math after using some of it up and figured that the manicures I get out of it cost me about $2 each so it can actually save a bunch of money compared to getting them done at a salon **if** you use the set up. I have a small collection of colors, but most of them have a bunch used and I think I will use them all up.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks the Samba shoes are ugly 😅 I think they make everyone’s feet look extra long.
I do love permanent jewelry though. It can be removed with scissors if necessary. But I love that I don’t have to put it on and take it off and worry about it tarnishing. I got a dainty bracelet and I’d like another one. I feel like they’re worth the money because I won’t have to throw it away because of tarnishing or fading. I haven’t seen much overconsumption in that area but maybe I haven’t been targeting for videos of filling your arms with permanent jewelry and then removing it soon.

For me it’s the Trader Joe’s mini freezer bags. I love Trader Joe’s reusable bags but I can’t think of a reason for needing a mini. Every time I use a freezer bag it’s for groceries or picnics or beach days and I like the room of the full size bag to put fruit, drinks, ect. I don’t get the use of a mini or how it is more useful than a full size bag. Yet there are signs everywhere saying they are sold out.

for portion control. i don't want to have to thaw a entire bag out. i put them in the mini bags and it is the perfect amount of whatever.
