Man, thanks for this. I had some video from one of these cameras where the additional mics ended up clipping, and I thought I couldn't use the footage. But I managed to import the clips into Garage Band, mute them, then use just the audio from the internal mic. Really appreciate your time in making this video. It was super helpful!
Quick update. I recorded several songs using your tips. MOV\WAV files. One track my bass guitar direct input into to camera. One track audio of the tune I am playing direct to the camera and the other track the MOV file with the open air mic the camera came with. I downloaded Reaper DAW. Tonight I will try an edit as you mentioned in your video. Thank you again. CHEERS!
Cody, I cannot tell you how much you video has helped me along my journey of making bass covers of rock, metal, thrash, punk for RUclips. I started this a few years ago at the dawn of Covid. April 1st 2020 my 50th birthday. I knew nothing of shooting, editing and recording me playing songs. Seemed very easy to upload the videos and it was. However to make them sound great well there was a big learning curve for me. Started on my old iPad. Quickly found out my audio sucks, almost done with my story...lol...Bought new iPad ...app for editing ....new iPad shure mic. Then a computer and editing software finally we come to the Zoom Q8. I've owned a fostec 4 track in my 20's and video cameras has been with me just as long.. So I thought 4 track recorder and a camera, YEAH! That was only half of it. I no problem hooking the camera up, Recording and editing transferring files no problem. The audio still stunk. Then I saw your video. You explained all the things that I was missing for the audio part. If you only knew how many times I edited the video and had issues synching it up again. Pure Gold. I've found videos on how to navigate and record but your tip I hadn't heard before. So now I think I have this thing on track with your help I THANK YOU and in the coming weeks I will use the tips you gave and all the other shit I learned to make some more videos. If you have a moment check one of my videos and in a month come back and check out the audio difference after I applied you tips. I hope this day finds you healthy and happy! Richard Mack....That's me.
You've got some really nice beefy tone going already (esp. recent Danzig & Kiss covers) --can't wait to see the update. Keep me in the loop. Liked and subscribed!
@@CodyWeathers Thank you for sub & inspiration! Yeah man the Spector bass is beast! I am pretty stoked about the ZOOM Q8. I downloaded the Reaper DAW that you mentioned in the video. A bit of a learning curve for me. I appreciate the comment. Best thing about RUclips and social media I get to interact with all kinds of good people like yourself. Thank you Cody for the encouragement.
@@CodyWeathersAs promised. We chatted a few months ago and you were very helpful answered all my questions . 🎉MUCH APPRECIATED? Here is the first video I made after watching your video and using your tips. I must of watched your video a dozen times to fine tune and memorize your tips. This video I took every thing I learned making mistakes or was giving great advice by other RUclipsrs like you. I even have my first professional guest musician accompanying me on this tune. The end result I think turned out really well….I thank you again! Crank it up!! ruclips.net/video/ZEXkPEslDUc/видео.htmlsi=GNjIRikVtxg2Aiqb

@@CodyWeathers I ended up ditching a DAW, I carefully adjusted my direct input levels, music audio track one and my direct bass track two and let it rip. I’m still going to use the reaper .once I sit down and figure it out …Here is the video I used from your tips! ruclips.net/video/ZEXkPEslDUc/видео.htmlsi=bB1syNDwJq6HR_SA
I've been struggling with getting clean audio for many months. This video definitely inspired a "light bulb moment" for me. Now, I load my separated tracks into Ableton and season to taste. MOST importantly, the camera has a low pass filter. If you're getting muddy sound, especially with bass guitar, try adjusting the cut point until you lose the boom. It only lowers that frequency and below. It doesn't cut them completely. Definitely use a di or preamp di. Loud and strong are different things. My recordings without a di are clear but thin sounding, unless I really crank the eq. I peak at -12db at the camera and adjust levels at my daw. Thank you for the video bro!

Great extra tips for taking it to the next level!
@Cody Weathers I'm not sure if I'll need more help, but I'll sub anyway, as a thank you.
Hi,,,,excellent info on the Q8....can you tell us what video editor you use please?......thanks
I use Sony Vegas Pro, but any layered editor should be able to execute the same strategy detailed around 6:30
