Hello everyone! IMPORTANT UPDATE here for those of you who can’t seem to figure the clipping mask / top layer section of this video (hope I can help here) here below are the following steps do you to create the mask: 1. First find your base layer ( in my case here, the layer ‘s’ that I have started the tutorial with 2. Tap on that layer, then hit the select option 3. On the options at the bottom of the UI of Procreate, tap on ‘INVERT’, in order to invert the selection, preparing you for the next step 4. Now back into the Layers panel, find your top White Layer (the one you have fully filled with white). Tap on that layer, and hit ‘MASK’. 5. That should create a layer mask on that white layer that reveals everything that is underneath it 👍✨ 6. That’s it! Hopefully this does it on your end - good luck everyone! And sorry for the rushed tutorial, will move slower on the next one
This didn’t work for me either. Did you set something as a reference layer at the beginning? I tried to slow down the video, and the text layer jumps in position and goes from being a reference layer to not being one a couple times. When I try to follow your text steps, I just get a white screen (from the fill mask). Nothing underneath the fill mask shows through. Does the text layer need to not have a color/be transparent somehow?
Won't work for me either, I've tried merging all layers inverting but can't get it to show if anyone knows thanks in advance. I know I'm Def doing something wrong but don't know what
I had the same issue. After you make your letter as big as possible, click on that layer (still editable text) and then click rasterize. Then follow all the steps in the video and the mask part should work. He shows this step in the video but doesn't verbally say to do it. Hope that helps.
Incredible, fast to the point, clear and precise instructions, great results. 👌btw I've seen dozens of tutorials on clipping mask and mask and for some reason when I think I have the hang of it a curve ball comes from nowhere
Thanks!! It was a great tutorial. Though I messed up with the “D” I tried. But nevertheless, will do it again. One bit of advice, you could slow down a bit specially for those who fear using Procreate for the first time. Looking forward for another tutorial. Thanks again!!
Thank you for the video. Really grateful. I wonder though why you skipped some steps where you changed the dark blue layer and the light blue s layer from being seperate to then joining them together to make the dark bits appear underneath the S so the shadows work differently? So the blue looks like it's underneath the light blue S rather than on top... you can see them seperate at 2:55 then merged as one at 3:12. How you do that?? Wh u no show that? :( Still a great lesson but there are parts missing :) Thanks again! Edit: I worked it out! Use the dark blue layer (in my case layer 8) tap on the layer the choose "select" then go to the S letter layer and cut out the selection from this layer. THEN duplicate it, desaturate and lower brightness THEN gaussian blur it. Then move the dark blue layer (8) below the shadow of the S layer. THen select all shadow layers and the dark blue is at the bottom! :)
This is a great tutorial and technique but I've realized that a lot of people couldn't finish the tutorial because they're getting confused with the layer settings. I couldn't figure it out either how you could get the result in your video after pressing invert because it looks like you have few "S" layers
This video was so helpful! I saw a different video on the cut paper effect, but it made it seem difficult and complex. You made it seem easier. Btw, I used a different tutorial of urs 2 make my profile pic
Hello this is amazing. Thank you. Im cant find that menu from the layered letter, it seems like i have an old version or something. I cant find where I make the letter less opacity. Help
Oh no worries - that layer is just the base layer from the very beginning of the video, I had move it all the way to the top in order to make it easier to show the step of creating a mask to the top white layer. As you can see that Layer 11 is even turned off, so it doesn’t really affect the illustration at all 👍✨ good luck! I hope you get to the finish line!
why do you say to make sure the text layer stays a text layer and that it's not rasterized, then you literally rasterize the layer to change the opacity. then when you say to make a layer that goes over all the layers and fill it with a bright color, you have like two layers there already, and an S that I couldn't see where you got it from... those parts make it hard to follow what otherwise would have been an easy to follow tutorial.
While I appreciate file size/upload- For me you moved too quickly. - there’s a wealth of info in this clip, but also having impaired eyesight, it was difficult also for me to see what you were selecting within the menus. Still gave a thumbs up!
I hope that you can go slower and working in bursts , and if necessary you can also press on the cog wheel icon on the RUclips player and set the playing speed of the video to 0.5 👍 hope this helps, Matt!
Same here. I was good until he got to the bright color, invert step. James Julier has a great way of showing how-to. I really like this cut-out paper tutorial, but not sure I’m going to be able to finish. I wish I could get a better - slower- look at what he’s doing in the layers menu. 😢
I find this is the case for most tutorials on any platform. Time and length are an issue, so speed is bumped up. I tend to have to watch all tutorials *at least* twice to master the new skill. If these speeds are too fast for a native speaker, can you imagine if you’re non-native?! 😮
It does not work, I do not get the paper cuts seen in the S. What is going wrong, I am really frustrated now ☹️☹️ it seems there is missing a step in showing
I like the tutorials you post, but you go way too fast for someone who isn’t as comfortable with the subject matter as you are. I actually had to give up on this after spending an hour trying to get through the mask/invert part. Sorry, dude. Kind of pointless to subscribe to something I can’t use....
Sorry Garvey, point taken - I had tried to make a tutorial that wasn’t too long, but I guess this one came up too short/fast. I’ll take that into the next one - and I have been thinking of making super slow versions of the tutorials in another platform such as Patreon, with the exercise files and everything 👍

Thank you so much for the step by step explanation, but unfortunately did not work , for sure my bad.

Thank you so much. This is the least complicated tutorial on this technique that I’ve ever seen. Subscribed!

Art is the journey of a free soul :)
Thank you so much- I forgot you can slow down the speed of the clip! (On full screen mode) Now I can follow!
great video! but I can't figure out how you created the textured paper layer
Thank you! The texture layers are just from unsplash - a website that offers free pictures, you can find paper textures there as well 👍
very helpful , thank you. !!

!im new to procreate and I’m learning a lot from your tutorials. You’re so generous ! Thank you😊
How did you create the texture paper?
Niiice!!! I should try this
👌
Thank you!! This was perfect!!

Thank you! How beautiful! ♥️🙏🏼♥️
Hello this is amazing. Thank you. Im cant find that menu from the layered letter, it seems like i have an old version or something. I cant find where I make the letter less opacity. Help
You now have to tap on the layer to find the opacity slider - or a double tap on the layer bring the opacity slider at the top of the UI
My menu is not the same as yours and I don’t know why
Rename
Select
Copy
Fill layer
Alpha lock
Etc but not opacity 🙈🤔
Well done! I learned a lot
I tried it and it looks so nice 🥰 thank you
Great piece 👌👌 good luck with your artwork and your channel. Massive 👍's up from a college artist.😊
Thank you! Good luck on your journey as well! 👍✨
thank you so much for this tutorial
Thx. Very expanding
awesome 👏
Awesome... wow
I tried to follow this tutorial and at 3:36 I don’t understand where that layer 11 came from?

Exactly!
Exactly
Very good work, however, the clipping mask did not work the way you explained.
Alright let me post a pinned comment for a solution for the clipping mask / Top layer part 👍

@@ghostpaper This works! Thanks so much for the tip!
Very nice thanks
It does not work, I do not get the paper cuts seen in the S. What is going wrong, I am really frustrated now ☹️☹️ it seems there is missing a step in showing
It would be nice if there's also a visual note typed in the video. Not just words coming out of the mouth.
i don't see rasturize
