From the living room to the studio in the beautiful city of Berlin, Germany; Street Fighters from five main capitals of the Fighting Games Community come together to sit on the couch and beat each other up for 25,000$. In what is to be considered the greatest 'money-matches' ever filmed, commentators Gootecks and Tasteless join your staple host, Dan "Frodan" Chou, to show you all the beat 'em ups that your heart could desire on ESGN Fight Night: Street Fighter.
I really like how Infiltration perceives the game, he and Daigo are pretty unique on that sense, they're both really perceptive on regards to their own play and even towards other things. Sako is also really interesting to listen to and he's been proving that he belongs to that same caliber as those two.
It's not in vain that they are that good, they're really perceptive people.

One thing I want to see improve from the editing of the show (not so much the commentary) is to always have the fight present on the screen. There was at least one instances where the camera moved to show the other players for 20 seconds and missed the beginning of a round. If they still want to do that, they should at least have the fight going on at the side or something.
Also, I'd rather not be spoiled by the titles of the videos. They should have more unique titles rather than the names of the fighters, because I was watching this on the playlist and it spoiled the ending of the episode I was watching.

tokido's style is very aggressive.. I felt infiltration would win because tokido was over aggressive in attacking and leaving a lot of openings once infiltration adjusted from being to defensive and became a little more aggressive he opened it up...
na, just one or two break in game 9 and game 10.
go back and watch if infiltration would have been more willing to let some attacks rip like dp's it would have been over sooner

As commentators they seem like they've never heard of a fighting game before doing this... Then they had to do a fuckton of research last second and didn't learn anything. These are like... Titans! The Titans of Street fighter all in one place (And filipino champ) and the announcers couldn't care less.

A lot of people talking crap about everything but I loved it. I love Street Fighter but have never watched pros play SFIV. I don't remember how I came across these Fight Night videos (there were 3 episodes of it when I started) but I was hooked. Can't wait for next season and will definitely start following SFIV tournaments from now on.
I don't think a lot of you guys understand that tasteless is commentating because he is there to bridge a gap between SF4 and SC2, essentially he's learning the game with them and help build our community. The commentary is boring to us because they have to explain things for people who may be considering picking up the game. This community needs to learn to compromise if we really want to grow, if epsorts wants one of their own guys to commentate with someone in the FGC at their own event then we have to deal with it. P.S. Tasteless does understand SF4 he plays at cafeid with infiltration and other korean players all the time, he just doesn't know a lot of things about commentating high level play, majority of the community probably can't even commentate well, so for being new to commentating this game he's doing well so cut the guy some slack and enjoy some matches.
It was pretty clear to me since the start of watching this coverage series. I don't understand the issue w/ all the community. Thank you for understanding how this works and for not making me feel like the only one out there. Good stuff!
There is nothing wrong in theory with something like that bridging a gap between communities etc. Nothing wrong with one commentator not knowing the game that well. In that role, Tasteless should have asked smart questions for the benefit of new viewers to the game, to draw more info out for them. He never did that. He mainly talked over the top of Gootecks, or tried to add his own very limited comments some of which were wrong or inane. Instead of trying to act like he knew the game (maybe he pulled it off for the non-FGC) he should have tried to get Gootecks to educate more (Gootecks did a decent job considering).
"He has nothing to do with SF4", "I've been watching tournaments for years." People with this type of mindset are part of the reason why this community hasn't grown much.

They are trying to hit some of the casual crowd with the commentary, obviously. That's why Gootecks spent a ridiculous amount of time explaining why its bad to have your back in the corner lol (among other explanations). Lets not burn it down yet FGC. We attack like piranha when you can tell someone isnt SF savvy (Adam Sessler comes to mind, but not even Jesus can forgive that guys gross negligence of the game).
Tasteless and Gootecks commentating did make a bit hard to watch at times, but If Tasteless learns some lingo I think the show will be ok. Im happy a high caliber production like this went down and I look forward to more.
I'm just discovering this series and think the idea is fantastic as well, but I'm in the camp that thinks the commentary needs a HUGE improvement.
I'm not a Street Fighter player, and even I can tell that Tasteless is clearly not knowledgeable about the game; Gootecks, on the other hand, is just not very interesting to listen to here (perhaps partly because he has nobody to bounce off of, and he feels the need to, as you say, reach out to the casual crowd).
James Chen and Ultra David, for example--tried-and-true commentators--are able to give excellent and informative play-by-play at a rapid clip, while maintaining great chemistry with each other which keeps the proceedings interesting even during lulls in a match. They're informative, quick, and entertaining.
I agree that people shouldn't go overboard in tearing this enterprise down, but right now the commentary is the missing element that, presentation-wise, could really send this ambitious series over the top. Right now it's very good, but with a team of informed, charismatic commentators, this could really be the start of something truly remarkable, and could attract a casual crowd fairly easily.

I can understand the girls, I agree they are unneeded, but that's the whole idea of ESGNtv Fight night, having pro players face off as entertainment in a fight night spoof kind of style.
It's designed to be over the top and unneeded, so in my opinion the girls fit the show, but I don't really care if they are or aren't there.
Awesome fights, and nice to see gootecks and tasteless cooperation improve. The casting was rocky in the beginning fine in the end.
Plus I mean, NFL has cheerleaders, NBA has cheerleaders, baseball doesn't but baseball is dying a rapid death. People get too caught up over T&A related to video games.
Can't wait for more fight night episodes. Keep it up ESGN.

Just my suggestion,i think this program can have a good longevity if they'll invite Daigo regularly(means obviously not all episodes).Almost everybody loves Daigo. Can hype everybody when he played top players. And also for curiosity and exposure, they must also invite those top online players like Proudstrawberry,Shiine,OMH, Wao,Smug, Ace IRin,etc.and dont forget with extra participation of jyobin.:)
Please bring in changing character on loss...will make the game more diverse per episode.

Came back years later to re watch these. Loving it all over again, but damn its painful to hear this guy talk about Street Fighter lol Glad Gootecks is here. Good shit none the less. Hope they bring this back even better...but not for SFV. Wait for SFVI

Liked these episodes. I appreciated how you tried to bring the game to "outsiders", even though the commentary felt unappropriate for more experienced viewers.

Eastern Players: Daigo, Sako, Bonchan, Gamerbee, Momochi,
Western Players: Justin Wong, Dieminion, PR Rog, Sanford Kelly, and SMUG!!
I still don't quite understand the format, but this set was really fun to watch. Re: the commentary discussion - they definitely need to switch something up. Either F-Word or Zhi would be excellent choices, Ultradavid too. Gootecks is a better interviewer and host than commentator, but he's okay - but it's just weird to have a commentator that doesn't know the game at all with him. It's bad for SF fans AND people trying to learn the game.

I think Infiltration is really strong in that he's so unpredictable. Tokido is good but my impression of him especially from his match in Brazil vs that champion Cammy player is that I think his tricks get old fast and doesn't adapt as fast. So his fancy tricks might come across as deluding at first but pro players usually adapt after a few rounds. Lativ has a similar problem too. Infiltration and Daigo don't seem to have this problem as much especially Infiltration. Xian also adapts faster than Tokido in my opinion.
For the next session, I'd love to see Haitani, Dieminion, PR Rog and of course Daigo Umehara.

So let me get this straight this was a whole week event and this guys didn't change their clothes?
They film these in one day maybe 2 then they release segments at regular intervals. Kinda like tv shows. Just broadcasting on the Web rather than on espn, HBO etc.
This commentary was no fun after all... There was almost NO HYPE support for the actual match.
I know a lot of other gusy watching this. But Fightings Games are also ALL ABOUT the HYPE! So get some better Commentary Guys. Please!

I stated clearly that Gootecks is not the problem. But they repeated themselves over and over again.
There was a lot of hpe moments in there. But they were too busy to repeating themselvs... and explaining fighting games in general. Instead of commenting the actual match.
rumsbumsable no not really... for someone thats been in the FGC for so long, his game knowledge is pretty a$$. Seriously pointing out that sagat vs akuma is 'a bad matchup' is like the extent of his commentary. He contributes very little to the match apart from just agreeing with tasteless once in awhile and saying things like 'nice crossup' and 'not looking good for X'. I like gooey as a FGC personality but in terms of commentary I would prefer having competent casters like F-Word, Ultradavid, Arturo, Spooky or even James Chen or Seth Killian. Gootecks doesnt know how to bring up hype or comment appropriately in a hype situation, at all imo.
Its not just this set, either. Theres a reason why you NEVER see Gootecks commentating, except for the odd nor/socal tourneys where he is also not contributing any significant game knowledge to the match.
People are giving Tasteless a lot of shit just because he is new to fighting games, imo he is a much better 'flavor' commentator and shouldve been paired up with someone who is more competent at commentating.
***** agreed, you gotta pull in the classic teams, you know? gootecks and mike on the mic would have made for a good show, mike and zhi were good at TGS, PIE Chun and Arturo are ULLLLLL, ultradavid and chen - these pairings have chemistry.
gootecks and tasteless aren't feeding off of eachother and gootecks has to commentate with an awareness of linking the FGC and the esports community - a trend he has been a strong proponent of.
the best thing for this program would be to get team rush hour in here.

Some subjective suggestions:
1. Tasteless is a funny and genuine guy but he knows virtually nothing about the game. Get Zhi for commentary - knowledge and humor.
2. Don't spoil outcomes via the intro - that was seriously stupid, sorry.
3. Maybe let in real spectators for some hype.
4. Get well known pros in there as well as people with great talent that yet have to prove themselfes. I am specifically talking about smug.
5. Mike Ross should be a permanent competitor :)
All in all I loved this new e-sportish format and am looking forward to the next one!

PLEASE do some "necessary" adjustment next time.
1) get rid of the "animated player scoreboard" after ever match. We can't see any expressions of the player. Especially in this set. Man was it annoying!
it doesn't add much to the "flashy" eSports feel to it, as you think.

2) get some BETTER commentary. This was NO HYPE after all. I repect Gootecks. Gotta love this dude. But you should get Zhii oder at least James Chen/Ultra David.

no but srs though. I'm loving this besides a few quirks, the shows format is pretty odd IMO(who plays who with the big ol' bent-yellow-floppy-rubber-stick+wheel of destiny thing... and character lock), cheeze-y schoolgirl intro(when I think video games... I think "sexy schoolgirl"... Kappa), player win poses(sometimes it would still be playing and the players have already started, they should tell the players to wait ~7 seconds or so to let it play out before they start at least) and rare cuts from the gameplay(a bit annoying, but at least they don't happen that often... kinda)
I don't mind the commentary(even though equivalent of John Madden for fighting games), I think the casual crowd will find them entertaining. JamesChen/UltraDavid commentary would be a lot better though(explaining/acknowledging things(good reads) quickly mid match in an easy to understand way, not paraphrasing what the other said... constantly). Gootecks and Tasteless have great synergy for commentating, no ackward or "umm..?" moments.
Keep up the good work though, it can only get better in Season 2.
Infiltration is great , but it's still a tall order for him to win his next 6 in a row. And obviously Tokido thought he can take out Infil. But it might of been a great idea for them to collude ...Just let Tokido win , and he only has to win 3 more matches to get the 25k. Then he can split 10k to Infil, and Tokido takes home 15k..since he would of done all the work.

for commentary i guess esports are more just straight forward commentary, professional style while we in the fgc are used to hype commentary with unique personalities in the mic not only just commentating but also entertaining the fans, one element esports should look into if they wanna bring new viewers as well as keep the fgc watchers entertained..so in a nutshell i guess the one problem i see on most comments is that the presentation isnt hype enough
