Clever design. Returning the once-split wood back to the wedge is brilliant. The other changes are also very well thought out. I can't believe the number of people that use a splitter that is a foot or more too low. They will have back problems in later life.
Think thrice, measure twice, and build once.
Thank you very much!
I’m 70 now and I’ve been a custom fabricator all my working career and well this just makes me smile. Nicely done 👍
That is awesome!
Crazy to see how some small modifications can make such a drastic improvement in efficiency and enjoyment using this old unit.
Neighbor Doug, this is pretty cool. We folks from the south refer to that as Yankee Ingenuity and you sir can wear it as a badge of honor. thanks for sharing this project.
I’ll wear that badge proudly! Thank you!
Without fail, my favourite log splitter video ever! Amazing what is possible it’s patience and considered thought, just outstanding Doug!!
Old northern tool splitter. I bought the same one second hand 21 years ago and left it when I sold my house 7years ago. Was able to get it back two weeks ago and drop it at the shop for repair. It’s running again so I’ll be running a cord or two of wood thru it this winter. I love the mods you made.
I like the height but I love the split wood return!!! Well done!
I would not have thought about wiggle room for the return. Good idea. I wondered bout the trash dropping from that cool tray. Awwsome work and prethoght.
Lubricity. I think that's a Doug term and a great one. The Umbrella and drink store is genius.
Hi Doug. This was a brilliant design. I am surprised that you didn't install a burger griller on the heat shield. 😂
That sliding table is a great idea!
There is a fella up in Canada with a log splitter with a moving tray - Knott Wood Working is the name of his channel. Great build, thanks for sharing. Enjoy the journey - cheers
Wow! I'm continually amazed with the custom designs and workmanship that you provide. Can't get enough of this Doug. Well done.
One consideration is to add some small cleats to the push plate so logs that aren't cut square and/ or have twisted grain don't kick up out at you under pressure.
I think you have a great concept for your log splitter , one thing I would suggest is to take two foot high bottom half of the bladder from the IC tote to put under your splitter to catch all the debris’s so you do not have to rake it up later…
Great work as usual Doug. The return cradle is ideal. Well done.
Great ideas and great execution as always Doug!
Thank you
You may have lost your eyesight but you did not lose your vision. Very creative and useful upgrades on all that you do, but this splitter in particular. I will enjoy watching your videos for the years to come. Be blessed.
Oh thank you!
Easton Made come on get Doug an Axis and the target audience would be that casual wood yard guy that don't have a lot of time to use a slow splitter then Doug can put his project in the Log Splitter Hall of Fame.
Hahahahaha, thanks for the comment!!
Amazing project! I want to see many more of that style of videos. Extremely impressive transformation from an old, ugly, inefficient splitter to a beautiful efficient comfortable splitter for homeowners.
That is a great idea - There was a gentleman in Spooner WI that made these in the early 80s with a sliding log rack on both sides - Built more heavy duty than any splitter I have ever seen in 40 years - My dad purchased one in 1980 - I own and use it yet to this day, in fact just fabricated a hydraulic log lift that moves with the ram and cut one side of the rack off to accommodate. Your work looks very well fabricated.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
You are one impressive guy, super intelligent design ideas and great job at fabricating it all. Probably no one has seen many of these ideas before, but once a wood splitter manufacturer see your designs they will be used by many people I suspect.
Thank you
I love what you have done and the fabrication work. It appears to split a little faster than before. You can even use your heat shield to fry up some eggs. 😄 I am really loving those golf cart wheels. 👍🏻
Thank you very much!
Awesome mod's Doug👍🏻👍🏻 I would keep a close eye on that void in the sliding tray, making sure nothing gets lodged in there on the return stroke 🤔
Thanks 👍
You are unbelievable the way you customized that splitter. The sliding tray is beautiful.
Nice shop, great splitter after all your mods!
OEC, i`ve watched your build on this... my friend, you are on a different level. LOVE what you did here with this log splitter!!!!!
I`m an old skool machinist, tool & die maker, (long before CNC technology was ever known) i can surely appreciate what you`ve done here. Best MODS i`ve seen to date!
The only thing i can suggest is, put some wood gripping teeth on that push plate before a log jumps out of the split and hits you or someone standing near it while splitting.
EDIT: I HAD to sub and like your channel. So much good stuff here! Thank youuuuuu, for what you do!
Glad you enjoyed this one and thanks for subscribing!
Very cool. Love that moving tray, you should patent that. You are creative and very talente Doug. 👏 keep the great videos coming.
Thanks 👍
The moving table is a great idea. I also love the umbrella holder. Great to see you keeping an heirloom in service with some more practical features.
very cool upgrades, Doug !!!
Absolutely awesome Old guy ingenuity !!!👴🏼💪
Great mods Doug! I think you might need an extension on the lever to bring it closer to the slitting wedge. I noticed that you were always having to reach back a ways to engage the retract stroke....
Oh yeah Doug. U might want to get a patent on the fabrication parts. Love the Wheels too...
Very ingenuous modification of your old log splitter. Spectacular!
That was a very well thought out FAB. Cool wheels and all. 🤠
You sir, are a genius. Brilliant ideas that I didn't see coming. Might want to patent that sliding that though!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
This is like a useful Colin Furze. Really useful additions! I'd buy one.
Glad you like it!
Doug you may want to reconsider those black mailable firings, they are only rated for 150 psi. They do seem to out perform their rated value but one day they may not. Steel hydraulic fittings are generally used. Nice work on all those mods!
I will look into new fittings, thank you!
Pubricity- love learning new words. Nice rig. Way over engineered for use and semi-comfort!! A basket to catch the trash .
Great ideas as always Doug!! Nice job!!!
Thanks for watching
That thing is super cool Doug!
Hey Doug....nice job, only thing I would add to the push plate would be 5-6 sharp welded grippers. When you get into knotty wood the end of the round will want to fly left or right off the plate.....just my thought......other wise you are ready for production!!!!
Back to the drawing board for my splitter thanks for the great ideas
Hello Doug, 👏 Good Job, Slick setup! 🪵👍🏼🇺🇸
Thanks 👍
Couldn’t wait to see the final product after you one eyed this machine. You didn’t disappoint. Great job as always.
Oh that is sweet Dough, great video thumbs up.
Thats absolutely awesome Doug. Ive genuinely been checking youtube every 40 mins this morning here in N. Ireland waiting on this video. I love your ideas and creativity. Glad the stickers are on too ! I guarantee theres not another log splitter on the planet with Chrome wheels. I really hope your channel grows and you reap the rewards, i really enjoyed this one. Your living my dream- honestly.
Take care, good to see Adam helping out
Liam 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Aweesome Doug!! You are something the way you think these things out and they work!! Stay safe!!
Thanks, you too!
Great restore and upgrades!
Well done Doug! Excellent thought process, innovation and fabrication!
Very nice Doug!
I love the new wheels neighbor Doug!
Thanks!!
Doug you are amazing. I love what you have transformed this splitter into. I'm 75 years old and have been watching your channel since you started. You remind me of my Dad who could build anything. I did not get that trait. Keep up the good work. I enjoy watching your creations.
Great job Doug
I’m modifying my splitter
Giving me some great ideas!!
Have fun!
hi there you do a great job coming up with good ideas ,and then making them , well done john
Thanks John!
Love the tray and the ram return stopper! The only point of concern I have is that it appears you used malleable cast iron fittings on the pressure side of the pump to reconfigure the hose routing. These are only rated for 150 psi service. You should be using forged, machined hydraulic fittings from Parker, Weatherhead, Aeroquip, or the like as they are rated for high pressure, usually 5000 psi or so. They aren't expensive and can be had from your local hydraulic supplier.
Brilliant Doug
That’s a great idea with the sliding table.
I think you've done a wicked job, you're good at your job
At the One Eye Customs Big Box Store I think this upgraded splitter will sell for much more than $1,995! Tim in northern TN
nice job! Really like your sliding tray concept!
More great ideas, always thinking ahead. Great job keep up the great work
I added a bump stop on my splitter , it saves seconds per stroke, but you'll find a big difference by the end of the day. Like the shelf great idea.
Good job, Now replace the pump and engine, Find a 16 HP riding lawnmower for 100 bucks and you will have elect. start, battery charging then junk the rest. mount a big pump under it and off you go. A infeed table would be nice.
Doug, Great job! Really cool video. You do great work, the fabrication work is very impressive . Carl FONDEROSA FARMS MD
Thank you very much!
Only other place I’ve seen a sliding table was the knotty wood working channel , his splitter has that option, very cool.
You're so talented, the creativity and fabrication skills are so fun to watch. Before i got my eastonmade, i had a countyline box store splitter. I ended up shortening the stroke of the ram as well to increase the efficiency a bit. Instead of a rod that triggers the detent, i got crafty at the other end. I basically put a 6" steel block at the far end where the log rests against so it basically shortens the overall stroke but lets rhe ram full retract. If that makes sense lol
I just realized that wouldnt work for you though, my splitter wedge is part of the ram itself and it pushes it into the "extended" steel block i mentioned to shorten the stroke
The umbrella idea is something that has run through my head for mine at least a third times! The only difference is that you did it buddy!
You're a creative genious. Enjoy watching you create your imagination.
I love the log holder rack you made. I will look at my Country Line Log splitter and see if I can add something like that. Great videos, I enjoy your channel.
Cool, thanks!
Good job! I like watching you improve machines
I built a wood splitter a couple years ago as well and incorporated the sliding table as well. The difference between your machine and mine is that I set mine to split both ways, so there is not much wasted motion. I can figure out how to upload a photo so you will have to take my word for it.
Keep up the good work!

Amazing just when we think Dougifications couldn’t get any better you outdo yourself again. You must have some pretty interesting and productive dreams at night, you must keep a notebook near by, LOL. That sliding tray is just next level icing on the cake. 😊✨🪵✨👍👍👍
Outstanding concept and fabrication job.
Man thank you so much for the idea on the return stopper! Im going to make something like this for my splitter now.
You bet!
If you weld a plate on the end of the slide tray and wedge on the opposite side you can split wood on the return stroke
Hey Doug I love what you did with that log splitter everything keep up the good work I have an old log splitter just like that one might have you clean it up for the same way you did yours
Great job Doug, you are very talented! The only thing that concerns me is that you used cast steel fittings on the high pressure side of the hydraulic system. Those fittings are not rated for high pressure and can fail on you, just want to make sure you don’t get hurt.
I hope you can patent that sliding tray. This rebuild is friggin' awesome, with 1 exception: I'm guessing you have to put the old wheels back on so you can get Autumn's golf cart off those cement blocks!😅
Lol, you are almost spot on!
I keep saying this. Doug, "You're the man!" That moving tray is really something. Seriously, you should look into getting a patent for it. Another great video!
Nice fab work and a good looking, very functional machine. I tend to split everything in the vertical position since a high percentage of my firewood comes in very large rounds (20" to 36" diameter). I'm not too interested in lifting those up to the splitter at waist height, so I choose to roll them from the pile to split 'em, then toss the split pieces into my truck or trailer for hauling to the woodsheds.
What a great vision, great video. Awesome
Very impressive. Well thought out and designed. I can see doing some modifications to my own splitter. At least mine is already set up in the workable tongue opposite of the ram. The umbrella and drink holder is a nice touch. Hats off to you Doug nice project. Thanks for sharing.
I like it, but I also think you might have been better served to convert it to a moving wedge/stationary plate (like a box store splitter). I split and stack into IBC totes in the same manner and it works well for me. I built a staging table from an old roof rack/basket that sits on the opposite side of the splitter that I stage rounds onto. Eventually I'd like to add a log lift to that side, but for now I just flip the splitter up vertical or bust down big pieces with maul.
Don't be surprised if Adam takes your splitter back to his woodyard and leaves you the Axis. 😊
DOUG, (or is it... Freddy Fabricator?!) , Best transformation of the old Frankenstein splitter I have ever seen! The modifications are definitely 'custom' Doug!
That is a sweet piece of machinery i need to get you to build one for me Great job
Very nice job Doug..
Thanks 👍
Nice work as always Doug. 👍🏼 This was a fun series to watch. Did you ever find out what horsepower that Tecumseh motor is? With it being 25 years old I'm guessing it's a 3 and 1/2 horse.
Although it's not as nice as yours there is a log splitter out there that has a sliding catch tray. It's called a Mighty Mac. Made in Canada.
You should start producing your own splitter!
With all of your connections and experience in the tool and die and machining industry you already have a head start on parts sourcing!
This has been my favorite mini series you’ve done so far Doug. Thanks for sharing all the good ideas and simple things that can make a big difference. It’s also good to see neighbor Adam helping out ha!
Excellant ideas. Sir. Clickity click, always thinking. keep moving
I thought your idea of a hydraulic bumper shut off was great but I thought of something much simpler. Having been a farmer I remembered that they make split collars in various lengths that slip right over the cylinder shaft that make the cylinder “bottom “ out sooner, no need for a bumper rod. I loved your sliding cradle.
Hi Doug, very nice upgrade project on the splitter. I particularly like the relocation of the valve to bump stop it and the moving deck, great idea!
Nice! I’m going to add the umbrella holder to my rig!
Good choice!
I really like the umbrella you installed. Im going to put one on my Wolfe Ridge
It works very well!
You can put that supply line from the pump to the control valve under the front of the control valve over the ram, to tidy it up a bit.
I really like your design of the sliding table. It gets rid of the small pieces and returns wood to you. There’s gotta be some way to make that cylinder a bit faster for you. Not sure what that all entails. But I’m sure you could get it done. Nice work!!
I hope to make it a bit faster!
You attention to detail is wild. I appreciate your quality build on this innovative splitter. Maybe the log splitting manufacturers are taking notes. Great job
YES!!! I like it, good work and great design!
Awesome alterations.
Absolutely brilliant Doug, seeing how this log splitter looked from the beginning. That sliding tray bang on the money. That umbrella, drink holder, and of course those rims and tires. Cant forget the division made for the engine. ONE EYED CUSTOMS a fan👌🏻🔥🇨🇦
Thank you!
