Is It Possible To Survive The Music Industry?!

- How do you survive the rock & roll lifestyle? Dave Mustaine was interviewed by Joe Rogan recently about the dark the side of the music industry. They touch on why it is so difficult to survive in this industry, and how it's possible to navigate it. What is it about the "rock & roll" lifestyle that leaves people so damaged and often in need of "self-medicating" substances? Has anything changed? Do we still glorify the strung out rockstar? Do we enjoy the car-crash? Tell me what you think.

What do you think about the mystique of the "rock & roll lifestyle"?
Hello Justin. While playing it, I just "discovered" that radiohead's "fade out" chorus, is basically Visage's "fade to gray" - i need your opinion on this, i mean, it's Radiohead we are talking about, not some half-rapper!
It's just basically hedonism in it's purist form
Mick Shrimpton summed it up best 'As long as there's sex and drugs I could do without the rock n roll'
I think it could all be overhyped.I have been playing for years and it's 100% noticeable to folk when you are drunk or on something else🤪All the gigs I've been to watch of so called 'Hellraisers' have been superb and the playing is next level🔥
That rockstar lifestyle has helped a lot of my favorite artists die too young. That's about it
I'd love it if Justin had a podcast interviewing other musicians.
Rick Beato has done some good interviews, but yeah, Justin would make a good interviewer I think. Oh also Andertons music has some good interviews on their channel.
Maybe. But easier to slice, dice and excerpt.
HELL YES!! 🙏
This comment 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Lars Ulrich is also a surprisingly entertaining interviewer.
We really need a Justin Hawkins Autobiography. A non-salacious, honest account of your journey through the industry, drug abuse/recovery, and life in general. Justin Hawkins Writes Again, Again!
The autobiography I never knew I needed!
But I would need it to be read by Justin on Audible
I believe you are watching it every day on this channel.
excellent suggestion for a name the a book
My band opened for MD in New Zealand back in 91....Dave was strung out and constanly playing gameboy, but i do remember him coming into our dressing room to wish us a good gig, he tried to buy my Ibanez destroyer 2 but i declined his offer (still got that guitar) great night for us as a local metal band and Dave seemed like a cool dude....Cheers Justin.....
Cool. What was your bands name?

My question is... how desperate were they for opening acts? I saw Mayhem live in 2010 in Auckland and they used local bands as opening acts... it was embarassing to say the least.
Man! Really like this guy a lot! Justin is so introspective and intelligent. You can easily see that he spends lots of time pondering the things he sees, hears, and experiences in life. Genuine musing is what’s necessary for great songwriting. Guess that’s why we call it music. My kind of person, genuine.
I think it was Johnny Cash who said something along the lines of "Those kids today with their drugs, they take it for fun. We used to take it because we had to." Refering to having to take drugs just to be able to uphold their grueling touring scheduals in the days when transport was even way less conformtable.
Hipster bullshit. Every washed up member of the old generation hypocritically talks shit on the new generation. None of them "needed" their drugs. Losers who can't practice moderation project their weak wills on everyone else. Good riddance to bad attitude.
Cash suffered from childhoodtrauma. Substance abuse usually happens because traumatized people are numbing the pain. And ofcourse in some era’s/ social circles in rock n roll history they were cultivating abuse.
I really appreciate Dave. He's been through a lot.
Heh, funny name, heh…

It would be nice if he could better communicate those experiences and what he's learned.
Dave Mustaine, a living legend, one of the forefathers of thrash metal. He is also a survivor: he had severe nerve damage in his arm, so bad, he had to re-teach himself the guitar, he had spinal cord surgery and more recently cancer and of course the aforementioned substance abuse issues.
Relearning isn’t like learning it like new, I had a major stroke& relearned too.

I'd say self-sabotage for me is usually a reaction to fear of failure or fear of losing control. If I'm afraid I am going to fail anyway, I'll just fail in a way that I choose, so I'm the one in control and really it's a success since I planned to fail, isn't it?
For sure. I really don't see too many people self-sabotaging because they felt life was too easy.
Agreed. My self sabotage comes from fear. I wish it was because things were too easy.

Apparently Keith Moon heard “Substitute”, The Who’s new single on a radio and sought out the other members ranting that they had hired another drummer behind his back. They hadn’t, he just couldn’t remember the recording session.

David Bowie said once that he had no memory whatsoever of the recording sessions for Station to Station.

@@domenicgalata1470 Yeah, it’s unbelievable. Not glamorising the lifestyle because when Keith moved to L.A. 4:45 Stigmatism refers to image formation in optics.
Astigmatism is a refractive error due to abnormalities of the cornea/lens (surface, shape, curvature) that results in blurred vision.
Bulging of the eyes is called proptosis/exophthalmos and is most often caused by Graves disease (hyperthyroidism), where swelling of tissue behind/around the eye pushes the eyeball forward.
Right. But Dave would have done better with "stigma".
When stigma becomes ophthalmology - well done
It's good to listen to someone who has survived. I myself am one of those. I don't cut myself off from the past because I know it's part of me. It was and will be.

Justin, I'm so happy I've found your channel. Great insight into music and music business. And, you're a really great guy! Thanks so much and please go on and on and on. 🎸
I find Alice Cooper really inspiring for the way he’s helped others in the industry get clean and sober after he did so himself
Early in Megadeth's career he tried to warn Dave Mustaine about drugs and alcohol, yeah that didn't take. 😄
I don't think I've seen a better take on the industry than Justin Hawkins has. I really think it would be great if he had his own podcast and interviewed other musicians. He just does a great job talking about sensitive subjects. I feel like he could really get other artists to open up.
I think he nailed the point of "we should be supporting each other". I feel like what Rogan does is great, but it would be awesome if we had that for the music industry. A place where artists can go to just talk and be open and honest about things they deal with.
Just found your channel yesterday, subbed and have been binge watching past episodes. Great stuff!
So insightfull.... t'was a service then a product and back to a service again...... we have been saying this for a few years. Musicians (and artists in general) are so valuable to society the industry really needs to change, but we need to consider how we consume music..... I still love albums!
The thing that makes me laugh is countries, like Ireland for example, boast a heritage of artists, from writers, to poets, from panters to musicians, but try and get by as a young artist nowadays! You'll be snuffed out at every turn.
The notion that drug use is a symptom of rock & roll ignores how common heroin use was with Jazz musicians including some of the most famous ones such as Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, John Coltrane etc. Country and folk artists also indulged as well. Country legend Hank Williams was known mainly for his alcoholism but he also used heroin, cocaine and morphine.
People who are compelled to make stuff are often needing to self-medicate.
"Minnie The Moocher" mentions cocaine and heroin, in a somewhat coded way.
Country and Western stars were some of the heaviest users. Especially in the days when you could get speed and valium over the counter at chemists.
He was introduced to heroin by the Jazz guys he had in the band on the first two records (Chris Poland /Garr Samuelson ) , he actually bought it up in his biography .
There were hardcore addicts from the earliest days of jazz. Musicians who played with Bix Beiderbecke in the 20s had notes on their sheet music to "wake up Bix" for his solos as he would often be passed out during performances.
I have a renewed respect for C&W now thanks😁
Very thought provoking .....I think many people view the Rock and Roll lifestyle through the lens of how " cool and glamorous" fame and the musicians appear to be...and many don't even think about the pitfalls and temptations and the consequences thereof....I honestly admire anyone who is strong enough to come out of the "other side"of rock to a healthier lifestyle....especially when it is still so prevelant.
It’s a romantic notion, the idea of the quintessential rockstar. Someone who bares their soul to the world through their music, abuses substances to cope with the physical, mental, and emotional damage of public scrutiny and touring, then finally succumbs tragically to poor choices. I still think Amy Winehouse had a death wish and wanted to be part of the 27 club.
These videos you put out are killer. Very informative and presented brilliantly!
I love your understated sense of humour. You make the world a little bit happier. Cheers mate.

@@bubblybubbles9052 This comment makes no sense. lol Why would you at all be worried how someone spends their money. That's is legitimately weird, and borderline unhinged. I grew up in a time where I would spend 17 dollars of money I didnt have each week to buy my favorite bands CD. Simply because it made my life better. I could have downloaded it for free off Limewire, but I wanted to support the artist. Since people rarely buy music now, I think its more than fair to send someone that you feel is giving you some entertainment and possibly even insight 10 dollars. Thank you Jus, I'm old enough to remember some of those 60's & 70's rockers who did a lot of drugs, still alive (barely) to tell the tale, and each generation that comes through, thinks this is glamorous/won't happen to them/they know better etc. I also remember media fascination with the likes of Boy George, and the media camping outside his house waiting for him to die. Great video Justin. In fact, it's a consistently great channel. Dave has always been a total riff machine and I really respect his guitar work. The frustration I feel with him is that on one hand he laments the lack of people giving him frank advice, and on the other, he fires people at the drop of a hat. How can you expect people to tell you how it is if you're going to kick them out for saying so? However, his comments regarding self-medication are absolutely spot on and people should always be humble enough to listen to those who have been there, done that, and lived to tell the tale.
Nothing personal but unless you know of him firing any members explicitly for "telling him like it is" I don't really know how this is relevant. Could just be me but I don't particularly know of him firing any members for that. Also some members have quit of their own accord as opposed to Dave firing them both Broderick and Drover quit as well as Freidman. He fired Chris Poland and Gar Samuelson specifically for selling the bands gear to buy heroin and the entire "World Needs A Hero" lineup was essentially dismissed as part of Dave disbanding the band for two years. His return wasn't even supposed to be with a Megadeth album in that regard he wanted to start a solo career but was under contract for more Megadeth albums. He did have a second falling out with Chris Poland because according to Chris Dave or his management didn't want to pay Chris for his work on "The System Has Failed" which is pretty sleazy if true but I still don't think that's on topic.
It happened to him and the band that fired him ended up seeing some moderate success.... I think their name was Metallicat or Metalips? Some dude named Lars Newsted fired him.
I think it's worked for Megadeth though, had he kept the Killing is my business line up and not hired Marty and Nick, Countown to Extinction and Rust in Peace wouldn't have happened.... His line up right after that had the double live album was killer... And now he has Kiko on guitar, and a killer drummer. On the flip side of all that maybe Crushem and that awful album never would have happened had the members not been afraid to speak up.
@@Turk_2023 Nah it was James Hammett.
Correction on the beginning there: Dave Mustaine did play on Metallica's original first demo tape No Life Til' Leather playing some of the songs and essentially the same solos that ended up on their first official album Kill Em All. He was kicked out right before they recorded Kill Em All and Kirk Hammet is pretty much playing all the same solos Dave made because there wasn't time for him to write new ones.
He's also credited with contributing to the writing of songs up to mop, no? It's great how it worked out for fans of thrash but you have to wonder how Metallica's sound would have been without Dave getting booted for being a fuckhead. I know Lars founded the band but I can't believe met stuck with him, he's as annoying as his skills are subpar

TBO, Justin's "Straight in with the drugs n alcohol thing" line didn't sit right with me, so I wanted to hear for myself. As I expected, this was not the case. I think after playing a really kicking show to a large and appreciative audience, the buzz on stage must be awesome. Then the come down is massive and instant. So I can see why people would want the feeling to continue.

It's called a Gi Justin. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu seems to be very popular within the Hardcore and Punk Rock scene at the moment. It pretty much came from NYHC and the violence at shows, people including musicians needed to learn how to fight. I think Harley Flanagan and Ray Cappo from Cro Mags and Youth of Today kind of started the Jiu Jitsu thing amongst their peers.
I can appreciate that Dave’s toxicity stems from an incredibly traumatizing childhood but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s toxic.
!!! And you get this information from whom or where?
I actually used to run in the same circles as his illegitimate daughter (she didn't know he was her father at the time) and it's interesting because she was just as cold and abrasive as he is/was, so it was funny when she found out he was her father, because it made perfect sense (also, she absolutely looks like his daughter - same hair color, facial features, etc).
She was a lesbian though, and he had just become a Christian when they met for the first time, and he was sort of giving her shit for 'living a sinful lifestyle' and he also dogged her for playing bass in her band instead of guitar, because "bass is for people who aren't good enough to play guitar" 🤣
I haven't seen her around in years, but I genuinely hope they were able to find SOME sort of father/daughter relationship, even if there was of course no real chance of them becoming super close - it's always cool to be able to stay somewhat connected to your biological parents.
...whoa, the internet has sort of been wiped of any info regarding this. She actually wrote about it in the Seattle local alternative paper The Stranger, but that article apparently either never made it on to the internet or merely didn't survive long on it. How fascinating.
I think the main purpose of self sabotage is to eliminate others expectations.
True. Also some people have a deep seated self esteem issue where they panic when things go well for too long, or they feel they somehow don't deserve it.

I am always impressed with your thinking.
I'm anti drugs, but even I can't help believe that a lot of music wouldn't exist without them. 1990's Dance Music without ecstasy? Nope! 1980's Thrash Metal without Cocaine? Nope!. The drugs alter how people feel which alters the music that they create.
Same. I've never done drugs, but I love a lot drug assisted (induced?) music. I can't help but believe that it aids creativity... unfortunately while wrecking most everything else.
I think thrash was mainly crank fueled, not coke so much
Acid came first though. The dance scene as we understand it now began with raves fuel by acid. X didn't come along till after that.
As a musician myself.. I struggled with drugs and alcohol from my teens well into adulthood.. now sober for a few years.. and I can see how the lack of focus and being into that bubble totally fkd me over.. the years just passed and my ambition with it.. I would rather be alone in my room than with other musicians trying to make a living of it.. it did not serve me.
One period is enough.
Love those Martin Backpacers....used one as a boat paddle in Paraguay once.
I find it amazing that the one thing you picked out from this entire interview was a short segment about drugs.
Rust In Peace is amazing. One of the best albums ever recorded. The book about its making was disappointing.
I didn’t know there was a book. Who wrote it? Nevermind, I can look it up myself. But I agree, it is their most complete and consistent album. The songs, the solos, the production, the performances. Probably on par with Master Of Puppets in my opinion.
The man is a legend -- one of the progenitors of thrash and a man who says what he feels - even when his opinions are au contraire....and you've gotta admire someone who refuses to sit on the fence. His honesty and candidness are admirable.
Honesty isn’t a word normally associated with Dave Mustaine…who’s a well known bullshit merchant.
@@AxeMan2781 perhaps Chris Chantler from Metal Hammer says it better than I do,

But thank you for your attempted schooling. Much appreciated. I feel so enlightened now. 🤗
I never cared about The Darkness, but I love you as a host! My new fave channel!
Your commentary is brilliant 🤘🏿😎
Review the new August Is Falling track. Brilliant

Thank you! Peace, love, happiness 🥰
I love your channel....And The Darkness is an amazing band....

Great video dude! Appreciate your candor and wit! 🤘🏻👊🏻
I just discovered this podcast and I'm addicted. I love the insight into different songs by skilled songwriter and musician. I missed the boat on Justin's band and never considered myself a fan of the music but I absolutely love this podcast. Justin you're the man
