- In this brand new documentary, made for Channel 4, Guy follows in the footsteps of the brave young pilots of World War Two to discover if he could have been a fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain. If he makes the grade, he’ll face his toughest test yet: flying a Hawker Hurricane in a dogfight against a Messerschmitt 109. Truly remarkable you are Guy, a true British legend for the working class people in the U.K. doing a job you love to give pleasure to others. Total awesome videos you put out.
Now the Battle of Britain program was stunning. But god I wish you guys would do a full program on this amazing piece of kit. Such unsung hero’s who have been sadly mostly forgotten.
My grandfather was on the ASR launches, but on the ‘Whalebacks’. Initially they were painted yellow and had no armament. We watched the queen mother relaunch 102 a long time ago.
Reminds me of the CRASH Boats the US Army Air Corp used in WWII. The lone operational survivor hull number USAAF P-520 Patrol Rescue Boat is fully restored and still running out of Wilmington, California. They were a bit larger/heavier and were powered by three V-12 Packard built Merlin's, putting out between 1200-1500 horse power each. They were for all intensive purposes a larger version of the Patrol Torpedo Boats, but governed to a top speed of 35 knots instead of the PT's 45 knot speed.
Зачем мужику нужен лошадиный хвост?
It was me and a group of us who restored her 25 years ago . We found all the original crew who served aboard her . Her pick up record was impressive , 38 airmen during the battle of britain alone !
No surrender 🇬🇧
Thanks Phil and the group that had the will and vision of restoring this St Bernard's of the sea .An equal thank you to all that served in whatever capacity in Britains hour of need. Job well done 👍 ✔
Interesting. My father served on these as a wireless operator and I remember him telling me he was straffed by an ME109! Family legend has it that he also picked up a cousin on one occasion. Dad was born in 1922 but sadly died too young in 1983.. So many things I'd love to ask him now.
Well done, it's a beauty... does it still have Napier Sea Lion engines or is it something modern?
My father helped build these boats till his mum & dad finally let him join the navy.
respect
Where these the boats built in Teignmouth at the Morgan and Giles boat yard ?
Imagine if they started doing videos on 'things guy martin cant do'
The video would be like 30seconds long, cos this man, can turn his hand to absolutely anything, and really makes himself look good! Hes a good down to earth lad!
Places Steve Backshall has not been.
My dad served on these boats, he is 92 years old this weekend. Will this program air on tv he would love to see it
David if you go to the description click on "show more" and you will see that Guy has put a link to the full documentry !
Also if you go on to CH4's website you will probably be able to find out when it's being aired on TV👍
Happy Birthday to Mr Taylor Senior 92 years young eh🙂
Served for seven years on RAF marine craft as a marine mechanic, 1979 till the disbanding of the trade in 1986, funny thing is tell people you where in the RAF on boats and quite a few people are ready to call you a liar. Good days and even better people.
What happened to you guys when the Trade disappeared? We you re-trained to airframes/propulsion/avionics etc?
My father was a crew member of one of these boats during the 1950's. I have a photo of his boat number 444.
I was fortunate enough to be shown round this boat when at uni. It is absolutely beautiful inside with a whole host of high quality wooden fittings with fantastically done varnish.
My father worked for the RAF on the coastal patrol boats that used to be in bridlington harbour , sadly they are gone , but not sure if one has made it to HULL mariner 👌 much respect guy for giving these men the mention , they should have got when they served 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👍
Unfortunately, there were many unsung heroes that didn't get the recognition they so rightfully deserve, sadly.
My great uncle built these boats while working for The British Powerboat Company then he joined the RAF and served on them during the war.
I am seriously in love with this boat, such a beast and so elegantly designed and built. Great job Guy, as usual!
Thanks Guy, remembering my uncle Ronnie served on these from 1940 and the stories he told
It was a good time being involved with helping to restore this boat, was in a very sorry state when it first came to Fawley. Queen mother was there at the relaunch, in Calshot.
Great stuff! My grandfather served in RAF Air Sea Rescue on the Whaleback version HSL No.149 out of Ramsgate and Dover during WW2. Also operated out of Freetown, Sierra Leone. He was a Sgt and marine engineer looking after these monster engines.
I remember two of these airsea rescue boats moored in Lyme Regis harbour. They were absolutely immaculate with their clear view screens glittering in the sunshine. What an attraction they would be now.

I was at school in Bridlington from 1963 to 1968 and I remember there being two of these boats in the harbour, and a big pale blue boathouse, now gone. My Dad was a winchman at 202 Sqn at RAF Leconfield - also gone, and I have a couple of photos of him doing 'deck drills' on these boats. Then of course, Lawrence of Arabia (T E Lawrence, but using the alias A/C Ross) was stationed on the boats at Brid in the 30s. He's gone too.
Hi guys, that’s some rescue boat 🚣♀️, absolutely gorgeous. Awesome video Guy. 😎👍👍👍🇬🇧
You had me at "Napier". Any Napier motor. (I am stalker-fascinated by the Napier Sabre) They're just so flippin cool.
The only problem with the videos on this channel is there not long enough :(
They're snippets of full programmes filmed for TV 🍻
My Father was in the RAF stationed around Britain during WW2 on several of these vessels, the tails he could tell but rarely did... and
I strangely sailed with Mr Rose once
Excellent bonus content, thank you 👍🏻👍🏻
My late father was coxswain on 5442 high speed launch stationed at Gibraltar and Falmouth in the mid 50's . I took my father before he passed to see an airsea rescue launch at RAF Hendon his face light up when he saw it ,I wi never forget that day .
Used to love working on these amazing machines I worked on them for four years at RAF Mountbatten in the years just before the marine side closed down
MY father was in the first Higgins crash boat class and in the first U.S crash boat Squadron deployed during to north Africa by the U.S..
My father served in what became the ASRS from 1936 a 1960. For most of that time he was the Coxswain of a launch.
I spent a week on the hms Dittisham down in Dartmouth when I was in the Royal navy, it was a fantastic experience. Great fun to
Give it as much as you want , guy straight opens it up ha ha
My grandfather served on one of these
why oh why do C4 insist on an overlay of music which means you cant hear the engines which is the VERY reason most people watch !!! guys.... we are not americans that need to be told by music that we have to be amazed. at least they haven't used the incessant under 5s drumming yet ....... of wait ... they do. !!! spoils what are great programmes.
I agree.
That "americans" comment kinda hurt, but I guess we earned it.

We're basically responsible for all bad television. But we vote with our dollars, and I don't watch reality tv.
Brilliant that these pieces of 'kit' to use Guys terminology are preserved. Another vital cog in that overall effort that helped stop the Germans back in 1940
Don’t want to be pedantic but the RNLI’s E class and Atlantic 8m5’s can both do 40 knots. Brilliant piece of kit though this rescue boat!
4:00 - Misleading script, R.A.F. have no organized rescue service during Battle of Britain.
Directorate of Air Sea Rescue was created on 6 February 1941.
Ohhh eye that's proper that.
Kirmington massive
My grandfather was an LAC on some of these boats during the war
I recall chatting to I chap who was on one in the Isle of man. He said used to stop out over 4hrs so they became navy and got a rum ration
"And this boat had 3 off'em" 1:29
guy would be very dangerous during war
Now thats a neat boat. How much fuel does it run trough on full throttle?
With originally three 24 litre _petrol_ engines I imagine an awful lot. A data sheet I saw suggested 400m at 28 knots before 500 gallons used, which is actually better than I expected. She’s been re-engined twice, in 1996 and 2012, and now has diesels so I guess will be better again.
Yeah it is war , but there are some things you don't do. Even in war. Shooting down helpless parachting men for example. After all we aren't naz is are we? Cheers for the upload.
I agree. It would be daft to shoot at a rescue boat. The crew could be hoicking one of your own out of the water. Would the boat crew really say: Nah, he's the enemy, let him drown? I doubt it, even in war.
yes if we cant follow the laws of war we are the enemy
@James Walsh Agreed, as soon as he said and repeated shoot the rescue boat, I turned it off. Thumbs down, If allies rescued an Axis Pilot of member of a flight crew he would be interned for the duration of the war.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
💛💛💛🍸🍸
War dont have rules.
Followed only by the naive.
Part 2 Guy test the BAR on the sail boat
BREN NOT BAR!
Proper😬
You're not gonna let me one my life in peace, are you?
Martin Clunes has let himself go
The RAF TTLs were faster with 2 Rolls Royce Sea Griffin engines up to 50knots I know !!2772 live on .
Is that the boat that lives on the Norfolk broads?
Sadly in 1940 they just didn't have enough fast boats to pick up the numbers of aircrew baling out into the sea.
Great series but what language does e speak ?

Guy, is there anything you won't get to operate? You get to do things most of us only read about....or watch online.
Only problem I have with this vid is,even in war,I would try to preserve life, including my enemy. I would rescue, hold prisoner until hostilities are over, then let them get back to their families. So they can’t hurt our boys, but can’t help theirs.
Good to see you've had your hair cut Guy. So it's just a shave now...................
Just note that one of the fathers of this boat is Lawrence of Arabia...
More Guy content.
Otherwise we riot and ruin the parts of the city we don’t live in. 😂😂😂😂
WHAT ENGINES ARE IN HER NOW???
Love your comments Guy - you are old school, not the PC inducted zombies of today!
