My favorite Indie Game channel. I learn about so many Indie titles through this that I would otherwise miss because they either weren't on my radar or I wouldn't have really looked at them otherwise.
Hey man, I bought Fallen Leaf thanks to your recommendation in a video a few time ago. The game is amazing, the perfect baby between Super Mario Bros 3 and Megaman. Masterpiece for platform fans.
I really appreciate the specific info about each game, like how Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus is in a rough spot because their publisher was shut down out of nowhere. These lists on their own are great, but the details behind them make these videos even better.
Honestly this new format is fine because we're all here for good indie games anyway and both original video types included games from all genres. You know, one might skip a video if it's a genre you don't like anyway, but both parent video types were about games across the board so it's all good :) .
Combining the two videos is a good call. The hidden gems video frequently has little of interest to me but I feel compelled to watch anyway, just in case.
As long as you put time stamps and what console each game is on, I will happily continue to subscribe and like every video released as soon as possible. This is an amazing channel because of those two elements.
Gestalt is fun to play. It's very short and EXTREMELY dialogue heavy. I personally don't mind either of those points, but some will. My biggest gripe is that N-O-T-H-I-N-G in the story heavy game is resolved. It literally ends on a cliffhanger. And instead of being excited, I felt disappointed and angry at the end because it. They spent so much time and energy building up a story, and it just falls completely flat at the finish line.
Agreed. A simple "Chosen One" story is fine, but my god they were heavy handed with it. Walk into a new area? Time to see what two different groups of people are talking about on the other side of the city. At the end we didn't even get a pay off! I don't know if they're planning dlc or a sequel, but I'm not looking forward to it.
Karate Survivor - Makes no bones about it being a "survivor" twist with an excellent karate chop an environmental manipulation thrown into the mix. Great idea by the dev and they fully deserve to cash-in! No Doubt the main character is called Hackie Shan ! Fallen Leaf - Really does look like the ace in the hole for retro platformer style mega-man with variant character styles x3. Definitely nailed what they wanted with this one. Farlands - alien planet farming sim in pixel graphics is a good spin on the usual stardew valley like games, also. I wonder what the space equivalent of farming Cauliflower might be? Roman Cauliflower with pink Polkadot variegated leaves? Abathor - Up to 4P platformer barbarian-conan Golden-Axe side-scrolling fun looks like the most fun of the lot so far! A must buy. Norland - This is Amazing! A rimworld-like Colony-Sim. Definitely a few early game bugs to iron out but otherwise has so much room to grow and become a deep complex interesting systems game. Bo: Path Of The Teal Lotus - Definitely the best art in any game I've seen this year and the air-mechanic jump for this metroidvania is imho a real treat of a skill to get to grips with. Another knock-out game this year. Does deserve content upgrades if the publisher issues can be solved. Cataclismo - Another excellent combo game of hordes fighting and base-building with progressing across the map and repeating the formula. Only heard goods thing about this one as well. Hard hitting top titles in this round-up: Right up there with some of the best indie game months on record.
Good stuff as alwaus, Clemmy. I'm curious but how old are you? You're extremely well-versed in classic arcade games from the 80s and 90s. I grew up in that era. Great time to be a kid!
I liked the two video format as oftentimes the hidden gems video would reveal games I genuinely hadn't heard of elsewhere :) Still, the content is quality and always appreciated
My feedback on the new format: - This video is great and gives the same kind of cogent comments as usual about 25 great games, which is what we hope for! - I'm only slightly worried that this is a lot of games presented all at once. 25 games plus a sponsored game all in one video kind of shines less of a spotlight on each individual game as they kind of melt together in our memory in this longer video. It will work for a focused viewer who is pausing and taking notes (or already has notes that this commentary can affirm or add nuance to), but for the average viewer they may click away at the end interested in only 1 or 2 games here. Whereas previously, they clicked away interested in 1 or 2 from the "best" video, and 1 or 2 from the "hidden gems" video. For me, 10 games is the "sweet spot" in a digest video -- each game feels spotlighted enough, but also there is enough variety (not always the case in a 5-game digest like some other channels present. 10 games is enough for every indie game fan to say: "oo, that's the one I want to look into!" just about every time. - In the end, you have to judge if the new format serves your channel traffic and workflow better. We love your indie game coverage, whichever way you present it. Thanks as always, Clemmy!
I understand there are probably to few to do, but I would love PS indie game episodes. More than half the games are PC exclusives and I will never do an ounce of work if I start playing games on my computer too.
I wonder, are you able at this point to play all of those games? For enough hours to claim if their good or not? It is feel like imposible for one person
If it's his full-time job (which is the case for quite a few YT'ers who make suggestion videos), then yes for sure! If he's producing this great channel in addition to another job, I trust that Clemmy is playing enough of each game that he recommends, to say whether they are good or not. This isn't a full review channel, and we all know that. That's not his job, and he would never claim so. The invaluable service Clemmy provides (better than any other indie voice on the internet imo), is "Which indies deserve your attention this month?" Then you take this list of 25, decide which ones appeal to you most, and go research them further before making your buying choices. This channel and a few other channels like it make it much harder for good games to escape our notice each month. Without this channel -- I don't know about you -- but I would have missed out completely on literally dozens of my favorite indie games over the last few years. I don't rank things the same way Clemmy does on this channel, but he helps me find my own favorites, even if they are "Rank #25" on his list (which haha actually is in my top 3 games of this month's video).
@@StewNWT For me it was three things. 1. There was so many breaks in the gameplay for off screen dialog. You'll be going into a new area and you'll have to stop to watch what two or more groups of people are talking about in the other side of the city. 2. The combat was not satisfying. Controls were good, but the flow of combat was off. Enemies have no hit stun so unlocking more attacks didn't matter because they could attack you while you were attacking. The dodge has close to a 2 second cool down. So agile fighting was impossible. 3. The game ends with nothing from the story paying off. No spoilers, but they are hyping an event. At the end the event is about to happen. We've been told we'll have to make a choice. Then the game ends. No idea is a dlc is coming to finish the game or if a sequel is planned. It feels like a show/movie/game where soon as the climax begins this game ends.
@@katanamaru1 great response thanks for taking the time to reply. I genuinely think I won't mind the first thing, the 2nd thing sounds pretty crucial and my god the 3rd, for real? ouch. I'll still get it but I hate it when games and movies do that
I like your video, but there are too much advertising on this one, got 4 even before the half and quit because I couldn't switch from game to game using the timecode.
It's not a numbered game on this list of 25. This channel is financially sponsored by a few indie game publishers to give their game some exposure in his videos, and when that is the case Clemmy wants to be transparent by telling his viewers: "Here is a SPONSOR's game you may like." He also almost always puts these sponsors' games 3rd in the videos (unless they rank, and therefore need to be placed higher).
Yeah I need a break. 2D metroidvanias and roguelikes as well ... REALLY need to stand out in some way and be a clear 9/10 game for me to consider buying in 2024. These three genres passed "genre saturation" a long time ago haha. More power to those who still love them, and just want to play em all! I know such people exist. That's how I was in the 90s and 00s collecting Japanese shmups. I had amassed literally hundreds of them to play, and wanted to play them all! But 100 farming sims? I personally can't do it.
Gestalt is VERY lackluster in all departments. It's mechanically unimpressive and nothing of note is added compared to any generic other metroidvania, the story is a generic "chosen one" plot that resolves absolutely nothing and ends on a cliffhanger and its only saving graces are sounddesign, setting and artstyle, all of which are really good. But overall, nothing makes me want to replay it, whereas I often find myself going back to the OGs like Metroid, SotN, Hollow Knight, etc. So at its core it is the most basic metroidvania I had the displeasure of paying for in a long time. Imho, it shouldn't be on this list.
Minds Beneath Us in 17th place? Behind stupid tower defenses, actions and similar garbage that no one has heard of? This game is a narrative masterpiece, with a 96% rating on Steam. These pseudo summaries are becoming more and more puzzling.
He says at the beginning of the video he is trying out this format instead, and wants feedback on whether we prefer this, or the old "Top 10" and "Hidden Gems 10" separately.
@@lautarofigueroa1467 It's a ranked list of the 25 games Clemmy thinks are the "Best Indie Games" of the month. To me, that means it is a top. Why would he put these 25 in a "Best" video, if he thinks there are a bunch of games better than #24 and #25?
Sad for the developers because they had some top talent and big names, but Gestalt was just too slow. The hype is gone. Had they released a year ago, they would have made triple the money. An unfortunate failed project at the end of the day. I strongly doubt they even broke even on this. A lesson for other developers on marketing and timelines.
