    He makes a good point. Layering scalemail over chainmail over a gambeson actually sounds like reasonably good protection.

      The Romans thought so. They called it lorica plumata.

      @@stevenschnepp576I don't really think it was a roman who wore it though. As far as I've read, it was worn by a nomad merc who came to Britain and was station there.
      Meaning, the only example found might be the only example found.

    I like scalemail most. The idea of combining chainmail with scalemail sounds like a match made in heaven!

      @hamasmillitant1 Год назад

      yep, the other way to approach it is system like chinese mountain symbol scale which solves weakness in a differnt way (it makes scale behave like mail, but because its scale you can make it much thicker metal than you could ever make chainmail due to wire thickness & ring size constraints. im currently making a plated mail/scale mail breastplate very similar to the roman example in this clip actually, i hadnt seen it before but its basically exactly what im building except scale shaped a little differnt on bottom on mine

    The Roman armour of scales integrated onto mail, lorica hamata squamatque, has an easier name - lorica plumata, a la plumage of a bird. Agree that it seems optimal for adventuring, assuming around 20 swg steel scales that have enough carbon in them to be heat-treated. -- a fellow armour nerd.

    Whuh I never knew that about "mail" referring specifically to chains. I would have blamed modern fantasy role playing enthusiasts but in the musical play "Camelot," Lancelot (no relation) purports that he could "climb a wall no one else can climb, cleave a dragon in record time, swim a moat in a coat of heavy iron mail" and that play debuted in 1960, supposedly 14 years before the first version of Dungeons and Dragons. it makes sense that the confusion would be older than any modern technology that romanticizes usage of the material.

    4-in-1 with interwoven scale is surprisingly good protection against impact. The commercial (steel) scales with one large hole at the top are OK, but we've been trialling some 'two hole, one slot' scales that lock it down a bit more. You don't lose as much flexibility as you might think, and it stiffens and almost acts like a non-Newtonian fluid when it gets hit.

    • @stevenschnepp576

      That's pretty close to what I was thinking of doing for some SCA armor. It seems such a natural answer to the problems of plate and maille.

    • @Gainn
      @Gainn 11 месяцев назад +1

      Some of the newer multi-linked designs are better at absorbing impact than the one hole types. Still not as good as plate, but enough that you'd survive (even if it didn't feel too good in the morning).

    Scale armor, depending on it's rigidity, could be referred to as scale maille for the same reason maille is referred to as maille. The term comes from the French word for "mesh" (or one of them, anyway). This is of course in reference to it's flexibility.

    Iirc the picture you've shown depicting lamellar armour is actually a scale armour - plates aren't ties together but sewn onto the fabric. Hell, in many (if not most) sources lamellar armour is just a type of scale armour since it is made out of metal scales, just attached differently

    • @leppeppel
      @leppeppel  4 года назад +3

      The picture at 2:31 is lamellar, according to the manufacturer.
      armstreet.com/store/armor/medieval-lamellar-stainless-steel-armor-body-suit
      Additionally, lamellar armour is technically armour which uses scales, yes, but when modern people (Matt, Lloyd, Skall, Shad, Dr. Capwell, etc.) talk about "scale armour," they're referring to scales sewn onto a backing. That's just what the term has come to mean. Here's a good Metatron video about the difference: ruclips.net/video/-z_aWdxWVuA/видео.html

    my scale armour is being built on Japanese 4x2 chain mail backing so if you stab under it you hit mail at a angle. it actually has 3mm hard ox(grind plate) scales so it would be bullet proof to a decent calibure looks a lot like the roman lorica hamadus qoumatiqa you show actually each scale has 2 holes with 2 rings at top that link it to one ring on mail shirt under it only differnce really is mine have a bevel on bottom and dont have those little sword breaking ridges(im planning on using it for reenactment ppl wouldnt like that at all lol)

    It is the heaviest type of armor. NOT lighter than plate. Plate is lighter than mail-per unit area. Mail plus a layer of scales which have overlaps is something o the order of TWICE as heavy as plate.

  • @MyCommentsGetGhosted

    The scale armor you show at the beginning of the video isn't really representative of what was used historically and was undoubtedly popular across Eurasia, according to historical records. Genuine scale armor has 4 holes in each scale, 2 on each side of the upper scale. The scales overlap not only vertically but horizontally, so that the 2 side holes of one scale overlap with the 2 side holes of the next horizontal scale. Some form of tie or attachment is then put through these overlapping holes and connected to the leather/fabric backing. While the scales aren't directly connected vertically, they overlap one another immensely, and due to the 2 holes on each side being vertically aligned, they stick closely to the fabric. Upward thrusts weren't that much of a problem, most likely, especially considering the posture of the warrior during combat.

    • @MyCommentsGetGhosted
      @MyCommentsGetGhosted 4 месяца назад

      Also, for the variants that only have 2 holes on the scale, the holes are vertically aligned and far apart so an upward thrust wouldn't be much of a problem for that variant either.

    I'm convinced scale armour is more effective than we think. I believe due to a lack of interest, modern reproductions fail to properly replicate the historic reality. A bit of experimental archaeology would likely produce a varied and superior armour than what we imagine.

    • @AlFonso-p6p
      @AlFonso-p6p 17 часов назад

      Well I have to imagine an integration of all 3 would be the most ideal depending on the area.
      Plate armor is incredibly useful as a defense with the exception of it's weakness,, the openings. Perhaps In these opened areas using scale maile would be a better armor? 🤔
