@itsgonnabeanaurfromme Talant comes from practice, study, and motivation. I'd rather be told that I have talent than that I've been blessed by someone's chosen deity. 😉
I have struggled a lot with the eye for quite some time now, but I was still able to wing it in the past. Having seen this video really made an impact on how I should paint the eyes. I'm now more confident.
I'm a week away from my finals and I'm really scared because I feel like I haven't learned enough due to the coronavirus, but tonight I want to try to relax by doing some painting. Even though I haven't picked up a brush in ages, I'm really looking forward to getting back into it and you're videos are a gift. Thank you for the clear explanation, you're videos are really helpful and the way you touch on every single brushstroke helps me understand the importance of every movement even better! Thanks again! 😊
I've been a landscape painter for more than 40 years but recently started a portrait in memory of my mom. My main problems are facial features. I've been through art school many years ago so I took many anatomy classes. I have good knowledge of that but painting them in oil has been a challenge. I'll keep at it until I get it right. This video is very helpful. Thanks for sharing your tips and talents, Rich.
Omg all these tips were so helpful! I never paid attention to the iris being lighter on the opposite side of the light reflection. Thanks a ton really!
Super helpful. Just getting into portrait painting & love your videos & tips! Thank you so much. Struggling financially rn, but when I get the funds, I want to purchase your course & support your good work. Appreciate how straightforward and helpful you are. Wish you every success.
I laughed so hard when you said, you render the eye fully than you have to do the other one!! Omg this is me hahaha and I'm working on learning to build them both at the same time. So yesihad a huge laugh and sooo understand! The main reason I'm commenting though is to tell you your explanation of how to paint the eye, more specifically to put the socket shape in first, then to remember the sphere behind the lids. I'm not sure if I'm wording it correctly but your wording of this for teaching is excellent, I could completely visualize what you were instructing. I have heard this explained so many times and although I understood couldn't visualize it. So if you ever decide to write a book ect. This would be a good snippit of your teachings to add. Just my opinion but I always value myself when a fellow artist shares. Just wanted to say... And have a great day :)
Good point to paint both eyes at the same time, and build them up with the surrounding anatomy. Nothing worse than painting one eye perfectly, and then realising that it's a few millimetres too low down and needs taking out and doing again. (Unless you've done it digitally in photoshop or something, in which chase you can draw the lasso around it and nudge it up...)
(Am i the only one that cant stand watching others painting ? The brush movement, or the way they hold it? But i love to watch because its like a magic show being explained. (I like slow motion to understand but i prefer speed because i cant stand the ''hesitation'' of the brush etc. Argh. ) Thank you soo much for all the videos explained and showing those techniques ! You are very kind!
Once again u nailed the topic at hand! I love how u describe the process from start to finish. Greatly informative. You are a fantastic teacher! Keep up the awesome work!
I just love your video's, I have learned so much from you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I'm a fairly new oil painter just started at age 63, now 67. Thinking of joining your patreon page soon. Thanks again ps just ordered Edgar Paynes book you recommended on composition, but my true passion is portraits, and they are also my downfall LOL. takes me 50 plus hours to do one and sometimes they just miss the mark, but I haven't given up.
I have a question about portraits that if we are making portraits it's important to make the portrait the same as the reference or 85 or 70% of the same facial features ?
this is very helpful! thank you so much..unfortunately I did not pick one of the two videos you recommended, so it was awkward, but I started painting right after and it was a tremendous improvement! Thank you.
Thank you so much for this video...I've been attempting to paint my son's portrait and it came out looking like middle school art class project so I've put it away so many times but finally thanks to you and especially this tutorial I am loving the results. So does my son! Again thank you!
Dude! You know your portrait skills are on point when a single eye, nose and mouth are recognizable as Sigourney Weaver x'D Seriously though, thank you for the great tips!
Your lips can look better if you make the shadow under the bottom lip just a tad little darker. Just a tiny dash under It will make them look more 3 dimensional. I consciously do this step even in minimal sketches because it can make the lips look well done, simply.
Hi Chris. Love your videos. Well presented and very informative. As a newbie to oil painting, I'm not sure of which brushes to get. The ones you recommend, are they primarily used for landscapes? I'm interested in doing portraits, too. Which ones would you recommend?
Yeah, I always start off confident with the mouth and end up swearing half way through. As usual best to forget it’s a mouth and paint shapes and values...
All good, Chris. One tip I would add to this and to all subjects but especially this subject:- Observe. i.e. look at the reference or model closely and always make an effort to work studiously from that. It seems obvious but for some reason we humans tend to think we know better than what our eyes tell us.
Thanks very much for this video, it was very useful. The book you mention - portrait painting by Michael Shane Neil is not available in the UK where I'm based. Is there somewhere you might know where I could order it. Thanks Andy
does anyone have any tips on how to make the eyes proportional to the head? i sturggle doing okay-ish skin and nose and lips, its the eyes i do that makes the whole painting look cartoonish. I always make them too large.
Paint coach...I was just curious.... Is alla prima the only technique u use for painting ? Or do u also sometimes layer on dry paint and work on paintings longer??
Maybe if I watch long enough I'll obsorb his talent💀
Lmao Mood
No, you need to paint.
Said Irv Rudley @dudewithacowboyhat7620
Never insult an artist's efforts and hard work by chalking it up to "talent".
@itsgonnabeanaurfromme Talant comes from practice, study, and motivation. I'd rather be told that I have talent than that I've been blessed by someone's chosen deity. 😉
You were spot on when you said that the mouth was the most difficult part to paint. I couldn't agree more
I have struggled a lot with the eye for quite some time now, but I was still able to wing it in the past. Having seen this video really made an impact on how I should paint the eyes. I'm now more confident.
I appreciate that he took normal, realistic examples for this (like a regular lip, not those blown up bratz-doll lips everyone seems to enjoy)

I followed your advice with flowers and my first oil painting turned out to be really good, I'm now more confident with oil paints.
Thanks! It looks little easier now for me

Because I watched this at work (no paint) I tried with pencil and my nose game became a contender! Cannot wait to paint at home!! Thank you Coach!
Great tips! I really liked how you painted and showed reference. The detail you got on camera really helped. Thank you for posting!
Thanks! You should check out the full tutorial on my Patreon
This was very helpful as I redid an oil painting following your advice and it's the nose for me as it happens.
Great video! I usually paint in acrylic and a friend of mine left me all of his oils.

Sure thing!
sigourney weavers little mouth...
I wanted to say those lips are Sigourney Weavers' lips but I thought I should check out if anyone else thought the same thing. So, here we are.
@@TheCubicplanet she has a cute mouth, small and thin lips distinct in subtle ways… im an artist amongst things… good call…
How do you get the proportions of the eye sockets right. Compared to the picture you're drawing?
helpful!
Looking for the link to the artist ( whose book was referenced early) Michael Shane Neal? I'm I overlooking it?
How do you decide the color of shadows?
Hello, please tell me the combination of skin colors thanks .
Bro, you been working out!
