  • This is a short documentary about the first super hero who called himself...THE GHOST RIDER. Long before Marvel and the Nicholas Cage movie, The Ghost Rider brought evil doers to justice in the pages of numerous comic books published by Magazine Enterprises during the Golden Age of Comics. Also featured, Ghost Rider artists Dick Ayers and Frank Frazetta.

    The character still appears in updated versions, usually called the Phantom Rider now. I wrote a story for Marvel Comics Presents when I worked at Marvel using the version of Phantom Rider named "Hamilton Slade" (presumably a nod to Harrison Ford, with the intent to make him sort of an Indiana Jones-type hero).

      @@RockandrollNegro Carter Slade was an ancestor. The modern Phantom Rider (modern at the time of the West Coast Avengers appearances) was Hamilton Slade, a descendent. I'm working on memory only here, but I think there was a situation where Carter Slade maybe abducted Mockingbird, and Hamilton Slade helped rescue her. Time travelly stuff.

    I had this idea that if Phantom Rider was ever reintroduced in the comics, or some other media, that he could have a new design element where in the light, he would have his normal white outfit, but in the dark, he would look like the modern Ghost Rider. So he would have a flaming skull, body, and whip. Instead of him actually being on fire, it would be glow in the dark paint that is invisible in broad daylight. Say he was chasing a train on his horse, he would just look like the Phantom Rider, but once they went through a tunnel, it would reveal his "Ghost Rider" look. This would only happened if he did not possess the "Spirit of Vengeance."

    I've been a huge fan of the (Johnny Blaze) Ghost Rider since I was a kid. I knew about the Phantom Rider and I THOUGHT I knew the how the Ghost Rider came about but, apparently I was wrong! From what I had read the song: Ghost Riders in the sky, was the start of it all but, it seems there was A LOT that was left out!! I never heard of the Hell Rider. I'm glad I saw this video!!

    The John Blaze Ghost Rider's look was similar to that of the Marvel Golden Age character The Blazing Skull. The Blazing Skull (Mark Anthony Todd) had mostly different. Yet some similar powers. Immortality, superhuman strength , immune to fire, able to shoot fire from his hands, and repair himself from almost any type of injury. He also had a sardonic and bizarre sense of humor. The Blazing Skull still has a obvious connection to the Ghost Rider Mythos.

    One sad chapter in the saga of the Ghost Rider occurred in the pages of the WCA (West Coast Avengers) when they travelled back in time to his era. The (renamed) Phantom Rider became infatuated with Hawkeye's then wife, Mockingbird and kidnapped her. Shame shame on Marvel for besmirching the great history of a classic character

      I read that issue back in the day when I was collecting the WCA. That was my first introduction to the character. I remember enjoying the new "old" characters but don't remember the creepster stuff written into the character. Yeah, shameful but an interesting tidbit of weird comic book lore.

    I remember this comic as it appeared in one of the Western titles like Rawhide Kid or Two Gun Kid . As a kid since comics was a hobby , I tried my hand at drawing comics myself . The Ghost Rider was easy to draw . I contacted Gary Fredrich on Utube about the Ghost Rider and why wasn't it available in Marvel Masterworks , he said cuz of a bad rift between him and Lee prevented him from publishing it .

    • @FizzFop1

      I think Lee was jealous of Fredrich to some degree. In the mid 60s, he won awards for his writing...and some of those awards came outside of the comics industry. It's a guess on my part, but I think that added to the friction between them.

    Well done! Vey well researched. Marvel western Ghost Rider was a favorite of my early years of comic book reading. You forgot to mention that, after it's seven issues 1967 run, Ghost Rider's adventures continued in Marvel's 1970 anthology series Western Gunfighters for 7 more issues.

    • @Rangersly
      @Rangersly 8 лет назад +2

      WESTERN GUNFIGHTERS was an anthology western that ran for 33 issues. The early issues had new stuff mixt in with short filler reprints. Aside from continuing Ghost Rider after his own title was cancelled, the new series were Gunhawk (the first story was scripted by Jerry Siegel!), Renegades, Tales from Fort Rango, the Outcast (introduced in issue #3 with art by Barry Smith!). Aside from Ghost Rider and Gunhawk, I don't think that none of these new series lasted for more than an issue or two. Maybe they were just tryouts to test new concepts? By issue # 8 WESTERN GUNFIGHTERS would become an all reprints anthology just like it's older brother series MIGHTY MARVEL WESTERN. Still, these series are very enjoyable as they are the cheapest way to read Atlas era westerns drawn by great artists like Jack Kirby of course, but also rare Gene Colan, Al Williamson, Matt Baker, John Romita, Joe Maneely, John Severin, and lots more.

    • @FizzFop1
      @FizzFop1  8 лет назад

      I love those old Atlas books...they are awesome! Funny you mention Atlas...The next Lost Hero is going to talk a little about Atlas. The very first comic books I had were a three pack of cover-less Marvel Westerns...I remember Kid Colt and a character called the Black Rider, but I have no idea what titles they were.

    • @Rangersly
      @Rangersly 8 лет назад +2

      Wow! We have gone almost full circle! Reprints of the Black Rider actually replaced Ghost Rider on WESTERN GUNFIGHTERS starting with issue # 8!
      Kid Colt was one of Atlas/Marvel longuest running title for a while, with more than 200 issues and a series that ran from the late 40's to the late 70's. I collect old westerns in general. I wish I could afford more Atlas era because of the great artists they had on them: Doug Wildey on OUTLAW KID, John Romita on WESTERN KID, Jack Keller on KID COLT, Joe Maneely, John Severin, Russ Heath, Jack Kirby, etc. And I am so disappointed that, when Marvel were doing those cool Atlas Era Masterworks volumes, they didn't do any, not one single volume of any western characters, If you need any help researching western characters, I'll be happy to lend a hand.

    • @FizzFop1
      @FizzFop1  8 лет назад +1

      Thanks! I might take you up on that. Maybe I'll do a western hero episode. Maybe do a top 10 best western heroes of the golden age. I have a handful of Westerns in my collection. I think I have a couple of Atlas Wyatt Earps'. Strikes me that they have some awesome Jack Davis art in them. I have some Magazine Enterprise Ghost Riders and a couple of Dells...I think that's about it...I know websites like Comic Book Plus and Digital Comic Book Museum have complete scans of a lot of the public domain western title from the defunct publishers (Magazine Enterprises, Dell, Fawcett). You should check them out sometime.

The main character accidentally becomes ghost rider, went to astral protection, taking place in space. I don't know this sounding like a bravestar remake or fanfic. And make it animated and don't make him a superhero

    Revisiting this vid for the umpteenth time...I've always loved the ominous chills Riders In The Sky imparts...and if there was a Disney char that terrified my childhood more than the banshee in Darby O'Gill, it was the headless horseman in Ichabod Crane.
    And it just hit me...what a powerful impression it must've made to listen to the one & then see the other. It's much too bad that the makers of the Ghost Rider movie(s) with Nicholas Cage didn't follow that formula. 'Cause then we would have gotten a motion picture treatment with some serious shivers of horror.
    Sigh. One can always hope that some enterprising folk somewhere will work their way past the Capt Marvel SJW infatuation and take up the challange...kinda like also waiting for a decent movie version of the Fantastic Four.

    It could be so cool to see a western in the MCU! Phantom Rider, Red Wolf- could be a really cool throwback, and branch into the almost completely uncharted territory of a superhero fantasy/western

      I agree, I think the MCU is missing an opportunity here.

      They missed an opportunity to do a Midnight Sons-type universe that could've run parallel to the Marvel Netflix shows.
      A dark and mature-rated series that explores the supernatural.
      Blade, Ghost Rider, Werewolf by Night, The Living Mummy, etc.

    Excellent video, beautiful edits. The vocal affectation employed is effective for the introduction, and while not too much and apropos, is unnecessary for the entire video.

    Sadly Phantom Rider is known for two things: Being in the crappy Ghost Rider movie and raping Mockingbird who was Hawkeye’s fiancé at the time and it was a different guy at the time.

    • @secondcomingofbast9908
      @secondcomingofbast9908 5 лет назад

      That wasn't Carter Slade, though. It was one of his successors. A brother or maybe a nephew. But yeah, he raped Mockingbird, I think, who later married Hawkeye. She ended up killing that version of the Ghost Rider. Caused him to fall from a cliff or something.

    I saw Dick Ayers at my County convention center when I was a pre teen. VERY small venue BUT this was when they were bankrupt. He was doing sketches, he had his wife with him. I wish I fucking got one BUT on another day I met Joe Sinnott. Sinnott personalized Hulk fighting Thing.

    • @FizzFop1

      I saw Ayers at conventions for years...I have an excellent copy of Ghost Rider #1 from 1950...I never had it with me when he was there. Wish I could have gotten him to autograph it. I did watch him look over aspiring artists portfolios and drawings from little kids...he took the time to talk with them and even show them a few tricks of the trade. From what I could tell, he was a top notch guy.
