I can't imagine what Mark went through from his loss of his family members to losing this race. I am glad he handled everything well while being hurt. A true class act! May Julian, Shelly, and Sarah Rest in Peace.

mind-blowing that there's no catchfence around turn 2 and the backstretch

I was at this race with my Aunt and Two Uncle's. Sunday August 16th, 1998. I sat in Stand 8, Section 104, Row 36, Seat 16. I was a big Dale Earnhardt fan, yet I was pulling for Mark that day. I remember on the final lap we were walking down the stairs from the Grandstand as Jeff Gordon just went past. I nodded with my index finger as he pulled away for the win. Jeff had the car at the end, it's racing. Great race, and being a Ohio State football fan it was my only trip to the Irish Hills of Michigan. Thanks for the upload!

And a whuppin at Bristol he delivered, in his words, thankfully.

Despite this moment, Mark Martin would kick butt the next week and win at the Bristol night race, one of his most spectacular wins of the season.

One of the best races at Michigan. They need to get rid of splitter and bring the airdam back

Yes, racing was so much freer then. The cars were not down in the track with that splitter. It makes racing very restrictive,

Funny how Gordon ran at the back of the top 10 yet changes two tires, and somehow is faster than the rest of the guys that took two tires. There was a lot of chicanery going on in the hendrick camp.

Of course. I'm not necessarily a Jeff Gordon hater but he did used to swipe wins right underneath the people's noses in the 90s out of nowhere sort of frequently.
Especially me being more of a Ford driver fan. I was a Davey Allison, Mark Martin fan. My favorite NASCAR driver is Rusty Wallace. I was a fan of Alan Kulwicki, Bill Elliott , Dale Jarrett.
I mean i like some of the Chevy drivers too but i was more of a Ford driver fan.
With that being said you know things come around. Jeff Gordon got a lot of luck and breaks that went his way in the 90s, but those breaks didn't go his way in the 2000s and 2010s very much.
Especially during the chase era, had the chase not exist he would've been 7 times champ. I think he would've been champion in 2004, 2007 and 2014. So it ended up coming around on him in the end eventually🤷🏿‍♂️

Gordon did not have the best car before that caution came out. It's just weird how he ended up winning.

And so that's exactly what he did the following weekend at Bristol......He went out there and "Whooped" them.

The reception when Gordon got out of the car was the loudest thing I've ever heard...just BOOS, swearing...was NOT a popular moment. Gordon's 2-tire tricks stopped after 1998. Earnhardt was yelling on radio that NASCAR better check to see what he has on that car. Rumors of soaked tires persisted. Wasn't able to pull off 2-tire vs 4-tire wins in 1999 or 2000. Weird....

Surely the teams owned by Hendrick would never cheat. Oh wait, who just got caught recently.
