Swede here and oh yes i have eaten smörgårtårta maaaaanny times through out the years. I love the one with shrimp and often comes with boiled eggs on top. Either sliced or in quarters. So yummy! 😊
We have smörgåstårta when we have sellebration with lots of guseta. Example gradiation, baptise, wedding, birthday in spring and summer.
I think a lot of people who hasn't experienced sandwich cake, think of a cake, like an ordinary sweet cake, that someone just put savory items on it, and it sounds weird and disgusting, instead of thinking of it from the other direction, more like a sandwich, with all the savory fillings you like, in the shape of a cake.
You don't eat this during fika. You don't actually eat it for an ordinary dinner or lunch either, unless it's leftovers, this is typical family gathering events, for things like christenings, birthdays and funerals it's very filling and it looks pretty, so it's suitable for such things. It's quite easy to prepare, you can make most of it the day before, store it in the fridge, and then decorate it at the location of the event. Or you can just buy it at a bakery, caterer or even at some of the big supermarkets. But I making it exactly the way you like yourself beats that if you ask me. You should try it! It's not that hard, and it's pretty fun. Kids love making their own one, and decorate it the way they want. It's very creative!
It's usually "gravlax", cured salmon, or smoked salmon on smörgåstårta, never raw salmon as on sushi! But you can put anything on a smörgåstårta, you can make one that has meat instead of seafood, and put like thin slices of roast beef on it for instane. Anything that you could put on a sandwich you can put in/on a sandwich cake, let your own tastebuds decide!
In Sweden a "smörgås" is a sandwich, or more commonly an open faced sandwich. A sandwich is a special kind of "smörgås", that is the kind of sandwich you are more used to with two pieces of bread with something in between. Anything with bread and something on it is a "smörgås".
The "smörgåstårta" is often served as a cake instead of a birthday cake for grownups. Kids usually get a regular cake. It's also often eaten as a light lunch during the summer, or as a bit fuller fika when the next real meal is quite a while away. Ur just as something a bit fancier than normal. And since it tend to get better when it's rested, soaking up moist from the fillings and geting softer, you can keep the leftovers in the fridge and have later. The fillings tend to vary wildly and you pretty much use whatever you like.
We also have our own sort of pizza that's been around forever. It's called "varm macka". oh yeah, "macka" is slang for smörgås. It's just a piece of bread, butter and some stuff and finally a generous layer of cheese that you put in the owen. Once again, unlike your grilled cheese sandwich it's usually an open faced sandwich. We also have these round flat soft bread that can be used and they do reassemble a pizza. The main difference is that the pizza is made from dough that's baked with the pizza while a "varm macka" is made on already baked bread.
I also grew up with sandwich cake.
There are not only two different sandwich cakes, but there are a large number of different sandwich cakes. There are sandwich cakes with, as I said, seafood on it and even within this there are several different versions, then there are sandwich cakes with grilled chicken in different versions, sandwich cakes with reindeer meat in different versions, sandwich cakes with pork in different versions, sandwich cakes with beef in different versions. Yes, there are many versions of sandwich cakes, only the imagination puts an end. Many people choose sandwich cake for birthdays, weddings, funerals or simply to have a bite with fika.
Smörgåstårta is usually a main dish that we eat at different celebrations and/or gatherings, but you can have it for fika if you want to. Though it is savery and not sweet.
You often have a sandwich cake when someone has a birthday and you want it a bit food but don't want to stand and cook.
Then you can make or buy a sandwich cake.
Often they are big for like 12-15 people.

Everyone in Sweden knows what smörgåstårta is! It’s extremely popular and something that is often served at birthday parties along with birthday cakes so people can choose which they want or even take a bite of both. And If you go for a fika somewhere the place often have smörgåstårta on their ”menu”.

Love your channel. Smörgåstårta is basically a huge sandwich and you can fill it with whatever you like, really. It just comes in the shape of a cake. It's not sweet. It's savory. (But we also eat pancake-cake.That is sweet). And everybody has had it. Smörgåstårta I mean. But mostly for celebrations and anniversaries etc. Not so much an everyday dish. And you don't put RAW salmon on it. We don't eat RAW salmon! We eat smoked or cured(gravad) and you make sure it has been frozen before you eat it(to kill any parasites just in case) it is totally yummy though so please try it.👍😋 🐟🦐🎂🤩😂 Maybe try a less bland recipe(sorry she did a great job for someone who's never had it but still)
Just remember: putting whipped cream on a smörgåstårta is heresy. And it's never supposed to be sweet. Ever.
If you don't like seafood, you can always make a Smörgåstårta with ham and cheese. Google the versions.
Smörgåstårta kan be done with different breads, different fillings, different toppings. So there's very different outcomes, tastes etc. I prefer sandwich cake over regular sweet cake :) It does not have to be fish or shellfish.
My favourite smörgåstårta has tuna in it. It is heaven.
Trust me! IT IS good! And there are many different variants. Only your fantasy sets the limit. Prefer something like this over any sweet cake.
