  • Ice Race - The Arctic: Border Conflicts about Oil | Arctic Documentary
    Ice Race - Oil and Gas in the Arctic: • Oil and Gas in the Arc...
    The Arctic is an area with massive reserves that are extremely important for billions of people - but with unclear borderlines. History has shown us that this is an extremely dangerous situation.
    “Border Conflict” explains that the borders in the Arctic are disputed and have not been finally determined despite the fact that they have been defined in accordance with international criteria.
    Zoia Vylka Ravna is a member of the indigenous Nenets people, but she has lived away from the Russian tundra for a long time. She is now returning to her homeland in the far north of Russia where she becomes witness to the fact that her people’s traditional grazing grounds have been invaded by a new industry. Like the members of many other indigenous groups around the Polar basin she feels as though she has been robbed and forgotten.
    Will the countries in the north comply with international regulations while a desperate hunt for energy resource is taking place? Will it be possible to share this area without any military conflicts arising - and will the exploitation of natural resources be able to occur peacefully?
    In the final episode of the series “Ice Race” we stand at an important and dangerous crossroads in our search for more oil and gas. Because even though we are starting to use new sources of energy, the world will be dependent on petroleum activities for many decades to come.
    Despite numerous expeditions, our knowledge about the seas around the North Pole is still almost non-existent. The sovereigny of the countries around the polar basin only extends for 200 nautical miles. The remaining polar areas are administered by the UN. The race to find oil and gas in the Arctic Ocean has meant that it is therefore even more important for the five Arctic countries, i.e. USA, Russia, Canada, Norway and Denmark, to secure more of the polar basin. All these countries are therefore fighting intensely over what are sometimes overlapping border claims. These claims extend all the way to the outer limits of the continental shelf, i.e. the shallow waters off these countries’ coasts. If the new race culminates in predatory activities and major conflict, the indigenous populations could become the first and greatest loosers!

    The Arctic is an area with massive reserves that are extremely important for the entire world - but with unclear borderlines. History has shown us this can lead to volatile situations.
    Border Conflicts explains the situation in the Arctic; they are disputed and have not been ultimately determined despite binding definitions in accordance with international agreements and criteria.
    Zola Vylka Ravna is a member of the indigenous Nenets people (also know as Samoyed, are a Samoyedic ethnic group, native to northern arctic Russia), but she has lived away from the Russian arctic tundra for many years since she went to St. Petersburg to study and work. Now, she returns to her birthplace in the far north of Russia where she witnesses the fact that her people's traditional grazing lands have been invaded by a new industry. Like members of so many other indigenous groups around the Polar basin, she feels as though she has been robbed and forgotten. Exploited and tossed aside.
    Will the countries in the North comply with the international regulations while a desperate hunt for energy resources is underway? Will it be possible to share this area without military conflicts and will the exploitation of natural resources be able to be stopped?
    In the final episode of our series Ice Race, we stand at a crossroads in the search for gas and oil. Despite numerous expeditions, our knowledge about the seas surrounding the Arctic and the North Pole is still almost non-existent. The sovereignty of the countries around the polar circle extends for 200 nautical miles. The remaining polar areas are administered by the United Nations. The race to exploit the Arctic Oceans' natural resources by the surrounding countries USA, Russia, Canada, Denmark, Norway due to overlapping border claims is on. And as always, the losers are the weakest - the indigenous people who have lived there for centuries and the animals.
    Predatory activities of the named countries mostly don't care a whole lot about the people and animals who have lived there for centuries when it comes to their own greed. We hope the increasing awareness for sustainable energy resources will save this and other areas like it in time.

      That's right. Go up there and sneak around in the bush and see how much of a toxic wasteland the entire area has been turned into, which is the complete opposite of what bribed politicians, and paid-off corporate media tell the world. At the same time, most of the Albertans aren't going to say anything because they are prostitutes of the oil industry. As long as they are making money and can buy their $100,000 trucks, and boats and ATVs and campers and million dollar homes, they'll turn a blind eye to reality.

    • @13minutestomidnight
      @13minutestomidnight 3 года назад

      Huh. Interesting. The documentary describes hundreds of thousands of people living that lifestyle, but one woman describing her family living on the tundra (which the documentary states btw for what it's worth) is what is important? Does adopting a different lifestyle mean this woman can't advocate for her people or defend her homeland? Or is it that one family suffering as their land is destroyed would validate the same problems an entire society struggles with?
      When advocates use the western system, using it to gain the ability to reach people, they are discredited. When they don't use the system no one can hear them.
