  • In this video I explain the main reasons why Epoxy should not be used outdoors and why it is not UV resistant.
    I also explain that if you want to waterproof a rooftop you should use a flexible product instead that has better resistance to UV
    Important Note: Polyurethane Clear Coats are not suitable to protect epoxy when exposed to the sun. They have been specifically designed to protect PU coats.

      There are many different types of resins used to manufacture coatings. Epoxy is a type of resin used. Epoxy resins cure together with a hardener

    I am from India. I am using 2 component Epoxy system having 80%elongation for concrete roof Waterproofing purpose. As a top coat I am using white 2 component PU over the epoxy coat surface, to protect the surface from UV as per manufacturer recommendations.
    Please advise

      @learncoatings-epoxyfloorin9448  4 года назад

      I am not familiar with the exact products. Epoxy with 80% elongation means it has probably been modified with plasticisers, I am not too keen on such products. When talking about roofs pu clear coats should only be used on pu waterproofing coatings

    Great video ! One question... what would you use to waterproof an exterior painted concrete wall ? Something very durable and weatherproof (in Canada).
    I was looking into Stormdry but it does not penetrate painted walls. Thanks !

    • @learncoatings-epoxyfloorin9448
      @learncoatings-epoxyfloorin9448  3 года назад +1

      Most exterior based walls are coated with acrylics, if you are looking for something more durable than your standard acrylic wall paint you may want to look into solvent based acrylics. These are far more durable and have better long term adhesion than water based products

    How come they apply west system epoxy on teak on boats and then add varnish for uv protection? Is this simply a matter of keeping up with the varnish?

    • @learncoatings-epoxyfloorin9448

      In the US the term epoxy is used for everything, even though often the chemical composition is not epoxy. So its most likely something else that they are using

    I wonder what impact will the UV exposure will have on the slab just outside the garage door. It gets about 4 hours of AZ sunlight a day. I would use a 100% solids epoxy with a heavy coat of color chips and Devoe HPU. They advertise this HPU as aliphatic polyurethane

    • @learncoatings-epoxyfloorin9448
      @learncoatings-epoxyfloorin9448  2 года назад

      The area outside the garage door will definitely start showing some yellowing. The flakes and the HPU will definitely help in limiting the yellowing and chalking. But the light can go right through transparent coatings whether they are UV resistant or not

    What are your thoughts on using polyaspartic aliphatic urethane for flakes system in driveway,patios outside concrete? Thanks you

    • @learncoatings-epoxyfloorin9448
      @learncoatings-epoxyfloorin9448  3 года назад

      polyaspartic is good for outdoors since it is UV resistant and has good behaviour. As for flakes systems outdoors make sure you have a smooth surface otherwise it will pickup a lot of dirt outdoors

    Great job Akis. We are learning alot from this platform.What of epoxies applied indoors but at the reception area with sunlight filtering in? I have seen a lot of yellowing in these areas.
    Would the epoxy, pigmented with leafing aluminium, withstand the UV effects if I were to paint a metallic structure outdoors.

    • @learncoatings-epoxyfloorin9448
      @learncoatings-epoxyfloorin9448  4 года назад

      Thanks Jesse, yes areas indoors that get sunlight will get some yellowing especially if the colour is white. As for your question I do not think that the aluminium is enough. The epoxy chains will breakdown in the sun regardless of the pigment

    I have an art piece table, its 4'x2'. It is an antique, the artist created a 1/2" thick clay fired mosaic into a table by gluing the clay mosaic to a cement slab 1/2" thick. After restoring it, the clay mosaic was all in pieces, the cement slab was intact though. We attached the cement base to a 1/2" plywood. The top was uneven, I poured a table top grade epoxy resin over it to flatten it out. The customer keeps it out in their screened in porch that is cold in the winter, in NH, so it gets down to 20 degrees. I know now that I should not have used this product for where they are storing it, but there is no way to remove it without damaging the artwork. The epoxy lifted on the sides from the mosaic when it was cold. Once it got warm out, I glued it down with clear gorilla glue which can take the cold. Is there anything I can clear coat it with that you can think of that can work for these conditions? Any suggestions?

    • @learncoatings-epoxyfloorin9448
      @learncoatings-epoxyfloorin9448  4 года назад

      If you have freezing temperatures you definitely need to work with a polyurethane that tends to be more elastic than epoxy. So yes with aliphatic Pu there should not be a problem

      Aliphatic polyurethane tends to be higher in solvents which means it should not be applied as a thick coating. If you apply make sure the coating is thin

      Both epoxy and polyurethane can be used but if you are looking for potable water very few products are approved as food safe. Also always wear a mask when coating in reservoirs there is no oxygen in there and the solvent does not evaporate
