#epoxy #garage #floor - Хобби
Great video Tim. I have to go through this explanation to at least half my customers. I can tell when they call that they've either been on the Googles or talked to a polyurea salesman. I appreciate this video and will link to it on my website, with a caption like "In spite of what some other doofus told you..."
You have great content. For a garage floor in northern illinois, which coating would you use?
Thanks much for all the information.
I am in Wisconsin, had a 1 day polyaspartic system installed. Its been three years and I large parts of the top with the flake popping off. The concrete under it looks fine where they performed the concrete repair on my original garage floor. Will they warranty this this issue?
Great video! You've raised important points about polyurea and polyaspartic coatings. Have you considered using a fast-drying moisture vapor barrier epoxy primer as a base coat?
Very informative. I appreciate the breakdown and comparison. Too bad you’re not located in Southern California
Great video! Does your business charge a down payment before performing work on floor? I’ve noticed a big split on companies for and against it
So appreciate these videos. DIY from big stores failed as mentioned. Live in Cleveland Ohio area now. Concrete garage floor with no moisture barrier installed (built in 1952). Additionally, the drain needs to be replaced and the entrance has cracked concrete. Questions: 1) Would the moisture barrier work in this scenario because moisure in the concrete is visible when it wet outside from rain (none seeping in from underneath)? 2) Would a concrete contractor need to be hired to replace the drain and repair the concrete edge into the garage? Thanks in advance for your responses! Wish you were here to hire for the work needed!
WhAt would u recommend for a grow room with since have led grow lights?
Great video! What about VOC content? Is there any difference? Also, in your opinion grey + black + white flakes Or grey + dark grey + white flakes? Which is the safer bet?
This is a great video. Thank you!!
Where do you buy the material ??
Great information. Once you have a nice garage floor, you'll never going back to having a regular garage floor.
👍🏻👍🏻
So who do you go through for materials
Is there anyway to not do flakes? Or does that degrade the product?
quick question: what is a typical price u charge a customer for
1. an epoxy floor with aspartic top coat.
2. a polyurea floor w aspartic top coat.
thanks,
Thanks Tim. I always enjoy your videos. I have a very similar approach to my jobs. On my estimates I talk about the same idea about the moisture content passing through the concrete differs at different times and that's why I do a vapor barrier. I've also had issues in the past and now I just incorporate it on every job. I've never heard of a pigmented vapor barrier that you can flake into. I'd love to be able to shave off a day. I'm currently at 3 days. Vapory barrier, epoxy with flake, and poly top coat. Any chance on sharing the manufacturer? Good things.
Hey Andrew! Thanks!
Can you send me a DM on IG?
Hi there Mate I have a house in the village in Europe and I dont want to waste money on new floor with Tiles because I don't use it to much...
- is better ,cheaper and safe to use epoxy for flooring instead of new tiles !?
Hi Tim, I own a one day coating company and love the coating industry. We also install epoxy & urethane coating in certain settings. Love this video and learning from you guys.
I would really like to try the polyaspartic/urethane top coat that you’re using to top off your garage floors. Can you share a link to the product please?
Thanks and God bless!
Do you do floors in the PA area? If so I’m looking for someone to do mine. You’re welcome to shoot me a email or text if you’d be interested.
You said in the video that “with the mvb you no longer have to worry about moisture vapor transmission delaminating the coating”. Every manufacturer states that an mvb must be installed neat to be able to perform to the level of the mitigation they claim on their TDS. Are you saying you don’t have to worry about it since it gives you more confidence, or just empirical evidence over the course of years?
@timdcva I like the look of flakes but I want a smooth surface so its easier to clean. The flakes made it hard to sweep in my last garage. What can I do differently for my new build?
Our floors are pretty smooth. Some people use a lower viscosity top coat that causes the finish to be rougher. I would say to make sure they use 90% solids or
higher and you should be okay.
You could also get a price for a second top coat and decide if you need it after you feel the first top coat.
I'm curious as to how you've been installing floor coatings for 20 years, yet you have so much of your knowledge, not completely wrong, however it's almost all- only partially correct?
Can you comment on acid prep verses grinding and its effect on the install quality/longevity? Many thank.
You should always grind.
Acid doesn’t get the floor rough enough.
I made a training that explains this in detail:

I want to do my basement floor. Do people use this in basements?
Do you do jobs in PA?
Bingo! Thank you for the video! Basically saying in a very nice way that these companies slamming epoxy are full of crap. Just a slimy sales pitch to scare people and charge them more money.
What do you think about porcelain tile in a garage? I'm also tempted to do a wood floor like and old barn. Everyone scoffs and says it won't survive, buy I've seen 100 year old wood barn floors with tractors sitting on them.
Weakest link would be installation. Quality thinset, and back buttering the tiles a must. Any cracks in concrete will telegraph, but there’s products like ditra for this. Cleaning of grout may be a pain.
Would you give up information of what products you suggest or use? Xtreme Polishing Systems?
I dont think it's necessarily the heat in hot tires. There are lots of oils, waxes, and fatty acids in rubber, which will permeate and soften pretty most polymers and make them susceptible to damage.
Not true with high quality modern materials
What if there is an interior room under my garage? Does that generally create more moisture?
We do garages like that from time to time. No issues.
Thanks, Tim. I'll use your video, so homeowners don't just think it's a sales pitch from me!
Haha. Thats great. I hope it’s helpful. 👍🏻👍🏻
Same here! I literally just sent this to a homeowner juggling polyurea or epoxy
I used to work for PPG, and sometimes I help a good friend who does residential & commercial epoxy floors (in between his drywall jobs).
The warehouse I worked at got the full treatment, from floor-paint in the isles to a multi-layer solid epoxy showroom floor w/PPG logo inset.
IMHO epoxy floors with flakes don't look as good, or perform as well as solid epoxy... Flakes are just a cheap way to increase thickness without the cost/time.
In my experience they tend to, well, flake apart. Likely from poor prep or flake application. Either way, it's less likely with no flakes !
A well done floor would never never have that issue
I'm not necessarily a car collector, but if I had lottery money, my car garage is gonna be approx about 9000 Sq ft , how many epoxy kits would I need
I would really like to see how this holds up in a commercial shop. Specifically heavy construction where tracked machines such as a bulldozer that drives on the concrete.
It wouldn’t hold up well. We use urethane cement for that type of environment. 👍🏻👍🏻
Is there a reason you grind and not shot blast? We always shot blast our floors. Very clean, no dust left on the floor or im the pores of the concrete
The grinder is more versatile than a shot blaster… so we keep that on the van.
We have a small shot blaster we use to get dust up after we grind.
@@TimDCVA always cool to see how others are doing it. I'm up in canada and there's a few small differences between your set up and mine. Exact same spikes tho 🤣
I have one question that isn’t covered a lot. I get a lot of calls to come out and “fix” jobs for people who’ve gotten services from companies who have used the system out pool decks. Hot, slippery…. just terrible. I have not used this outdoors due to the fear of the same result. How do you feel about this?
I try not to use this system outdoors for that exact reason.
Does this work with heated electric floors?
Yes it does. 👍🏻👍🏻
@@TimDCVA I mean, if the heat is not melting the material, doesn't produce some kind of smelly toxicity, etc.?
I’m sorry I didn’t catch the electric part the first time I replied.
We do floors like this that have heat in them all the time. They are usually heated with hot water that flows through tubes in the slab.
Im not sure how electric heat would work on a concrete floor.
You're wrong about "every professional switching over to polyaspartic topcoat?
Okay then, here's a question for you. What would you suggest for something like a quick lube shop in which the floor is constantly having different vehicle fluids dripping onto it and gets mopped with degreaser at the end of the day?
Urethane Cement.
What kind of yoyo wouldn't take those cabinets out before doing the floor?
Haha. We do a lot of garages with cabinets and I don’t think anyone has ever gone to the trouble to take them out. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
How about a garage the size about 9000 square ft😊
Why are you saying a "polyaspartic Urethane" topcoat? They're 2 different products.
Misled not mislead Tim!
🤦🏻♂️ thank you!
I was actually thinking about changing it to “they are misleading you about epoxy garage floors”
Not sure which is better. Ha.
@@TimDCVA Anytime my friend. Think the current one is great
💪💪💪
🙌🏻
EXACTLY, the can of paint sitting on the basement floor will not rust right away...🤔
