  • The uncut interview of Stephen Colbert's visit to Google's New York office. You can find Stephen's book on Google Play here: goo.gl/Jyujo .
    America Again: Re-Becoming the Greatness We Never Weren't is more of a coffee-table book, with large color pictures, and chapter photos that require the use of included 3-D glasses. It falls somewhere between I Am America and the Daily Show faux-textbooks America (The Book) and Earth (The Book), which used that organizing principle to their advantage. The premise follows the many apocalyptic views of the past four years, claiming America has gone off the rails and completely lost its way, and that only this book offers the true path to restore America's greatness. Which was never really gone, because it's America.
    The best idea America Again mocks is the one contained in its title. In particular, it skewers Newt Gingrich's 2011 book A Nation Like No Other, which claimed, "America's exceptional greatness is not based on that fact that we are the most powerful, most prosperous-and most generous-nation on earth. Rather, those things are the result of American Exceptionalism." That is one preposterously arrogant whopper, which America Again exploits as an illogical chicken/egg position. The subtle difference between a beneficial amount of pride and the unchecked belief in exceptionalism is ripe for mockery.
    Stephen Colbert has been playing Stephen T. Colbert since 2005. In those seven years, he's built an impressive mythology to his character, a funhouse mirror held up to shame all other egomaniacal pundits for their hubris. But while the shtick is still reliably funny on television, it doesn't translate as well into print, because a book doesn't have television's immediacy. There's no Super PAC plotline, just a bunch of chapters that respond to issues a bit too late. Colbert and his staff are still extraordinarily funny, but in reaching for a middle-of-the-road coffee table humor book, America Again finds the limits of their comedic talent.

And that I did, who could keep up with that genius. Guess what? I got laughs too, by listening and responding ( a take as its called). In the same way, who could keep up with Cobert's pace? Healthcare is not a "freebie" you need it to live. We're not talking about handing out free iphones. We're talking about insulin, inhalers, epipens. Should a child die because their parent can't afford their insulin? If your answer is yes, that's simple, you're just trash. Here is actually a study of UBI, which is the most handout-esque thing you can do, and it shows that UBI does not affect working hard, it actually boosts the economy. TRICKLE UP economics, because trickle down clearly isn't working. You can't say that a single mom with two kids who has two jobs is not a hard worker, If she can't afford groceries, rent and healthcare that means THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN. As for equal pay, numerous studies and research show black, hispanic, and women are not paid equally in proportion to white men for doing the exact same jobs.

    Loved it. Especially, the difference between the two people on stage who are seen as the flagships for the sciences and arts. There is a prevalent tendency to tag intelligence to people who apply themselves in the field of science, simply because you can make more tangible things with the sciences, which then become the evidence for their intelligence. But this clearly shows why the arts are just as important and wonderful in an intangible sense. In the end, the field really is irrelevant. Human intelligence is so malleable that it can be applied to a variety of avenues ranging from software engineering to stand-up comedy.

      i´m an atheist and i belive its bad for ppl in general to have faith in something without proof and specialy have faith in an organized religion but, not some but most of the great scientist of all time were indeed believers in god, some did criticise the catholic church but firmly belived in a higher power. nowadays scientists tend to be atheist especialy in europe. but faith in a higher power doesnt not mean your dumber that atheists. atheist fly the "science flag" because we belive in the principles of science and that how we view the universe, but some atheist go to extreme and say that belivers cant be serious scientists and thats been prooven incorrect.whats bad is both views of existence of god is that each other look at the other with a sense of superiority and that is whats bad.

    • @Judg3m3nt
      @Judg3m3nt 10 лет назад +1

      electrotrolha Religions stem from origin theory which, by its nature, cannot be further reveled through evidence. Nothing existed at the start so we have nothing to go on but what we have now. Atheists and most any religion share that quality of faith in something without proof. The Big Bang theory (or those similar in goal) are ideas of what we think could be the origin but there is no evidence directly suggesting it. Scientists have faith in their origins just as a Catholic would theirs. I can agree with the rest of your comment.

    • @electrotrolha
      @electrotrolha 10 лет назад +1

      Judg3m3nt
      well, the fact people belive in the big bag is not just because of faith, there are some observable events that support the theory (even tho i think we know way to little to explain something so major like the origin of everything) like for example the expantion of the universe. its not the same thing with religion, scientists need something observable and measurable to speculate on, like how the universe seams to be expanding.everything starts with something you see and from then on yes, theories are formed. with god its the other way around a theory is formed for something you cant observe or measure, thats why its fathe and not a theory.

    • @Judg3m3nt
      @Judg3m3nt 10 лет назад +1

      electrotrolha My point is that the expansion theory fails as an origin theory because it starts with nothing. Even the addition of "formless matter" is not really fixing the problem. So scientists are exhibiting faith that their guess is right. I suggest that their beliefs are faith because in a scholastic environment, these things are presented as fact. I don't see how that situation would be different than if someone took a bible in and said that a diving being started everything, aside from the fact that it doesn't observe the slow expansion of matter. I am simply pointing out that this idea that only traditional religions utilize faith to any extent is incorrect. Modern Scientists try to use observable evidence where it exists but they still rely on faith in their theories when it comes to this topic.

    Colbert is pretty smart. I'm impressed, I have not spend much time listening to him and just saw bits of his show previously. He is too smart to appeal to the ones who really need to understand the zen comedy that he creates, the ones who need it ... namely Republicans. They are not able to think so hard or to keep contradictory ideas in their heads.

      I will _ALWAYS_ make time for Stephen...his creativity and talent more that warrant me spending time taking in his views. Plus I never would've imagined we would be at an intersection of deep intellectual thought and witty political humor. It's remarkable that news blogs and Network outlets re-cap Stewart and Colbert daily. And now John Oliver is yet another one keeping people informed with actual news. (i wonder if people remember this was once the network of "Battle Bots" - oh how far they've come)
      Sad to see his character will be finished with the move to CBS, but excited about what he'll do with that massive budget. Not to mention the upgraded access he'll receive as a host on a major network...

      Tim Padgett Eric Hoffer taught at UC Berkeley and he was an autodidact. You believe Colbert is "not qualified to teach?' He doesn't have certification to teach at some levels, but I'd take the course if it were offered and I daresay he would teach the skills of diligence and critical thinking in any subject.

    Oh my god! Stephen's story about the Whale Song blackout scene reminds me of a time I did pretty much the exact same thing!
    It was during a family vacation, we were going on a road trip and we had to take two cars to fit everyone and our stuff. As this was back before cell phones became common products, we bought walkie talkies so we could communicate between cars. We treated the walkie talkies like toys for most of the trip, simply telling jokes back and forth to one another, so I was trying to think of a way of One Upping my sisters.
    So then suddenly I was struck by inspiration, picked up the walkie talkie, and in my best female radio DJ voice said:
    "And now for your listening pleasure, I present to you: Songs of the Whale." Then preceded to make whaling, clicking noises for a minute.
    Unbeknownst to me in the other car, everyone was losing their minds with laughter, and the Songs of the Whale bit turned into a running gag in family events for a long time.
