Actually, Halloween is based on a Christian holiday. It is funny to see it celebrated in so many countries that are not Christian, especially Asian countries. Actually, the adoption of Christian holidays in non-Christian countries is funny, and sometimes goes awry. I one saw a photo from a store in a Chinese city. I think it was Hong Kong, but don't quote me on that. They had a Christmas promotion going on and as a prop they had Santa Claus hanging on a cross. Priceless. On the other hand, in the US, we do see some "foreign" holidays, mostly from China and India, but these are celebrated by the diaspora from those countries. One other funny Halloween situation I ran into was in England when I lived there early in the century. My sons were young and we went out trick or treating with them. A lot of people seemed not to be acquainted with the practice and didn't have candy to give the kids, so they gave them coins.
No it wasn't. Halloween was stolen from the Celtic pagans by the Catholics I believe, Christians further tried to use it to spread their religion. It's good like it's cousin holiday saturnalia in modernity it is becoming more secular as it's origins. A spirts day, a rather universal concept for the darkening days of winter. Rather strange that America even adopted Halloween since most of the puritans that fled there from being hated in places like Britain banned it as a pagan satanic practice... though they were also hated for banning Christmas. Think America added the cultural "treat" commercial part of it though as to why they might not have done so then, but strange to think that such a thing changed in our time. Though Mischief Night was a prevalent origin of "trick or treat" in England to do with old Halloween where youngsters would play tricks on those who did not give them gifts... like general vandalism... so you might have basically been accidentally mugging people lol. Or if sooner the coins you got were probably the popular golden chocolate coins you never opened...
Looking at Chinese young people, there might still be some hope for China, that there will be reform within the system. In Singapore, It’s horrible to see how authoritarian rule destroys imagination and humour. So maybe the situation in China is not as bad. Actually China, Hong Kong has become more like Singapore, that’s why it’s so soulless
