- We catch and cook parasitic lamprey. Find out how lamprey tastes! Order the MMM-GRILL here: www.shop.mmm-u...
I catch a parasitic lamprey in one of Lake Ontario tributaries which is attached to a live salmon. These lamprey attach to the outside of a fish and essentially consume their blood like a combination of a snake and blood sucker. They have nasty raspy teeth that suck on and hold tight, and don't let go. Although they do seem to release if they come out of the water such as when we land the fish.
The lamprey is very slimy and seems to hold a lot of fish oils as the smell and taste of fish is very strong. Since they don't have any bones at all, just cartilage, they are easy to clean, and prepare for cooking.
I cook the lamprey at the tarp shelter with a flour batter and egg wash with woodobo spices, cook in hot olive oil over an open fire using my MMM Grill.

Lampreys are an ancient extant lineage of jawless fish. Adult lamprey have toothed, funnel-like sucking mouth. The adult look like eels, are scaleless, and have elongated bodies, they have eyes, nostrils and gills out the sides of their head. Instead of vertebrae, they have a series of cartilaginous structures.
Lampreys are consumed where they are abundant as food for humans. King Henry I of England is
said to have been a big fan of lamprey eating and continued to eat them despite advice from his physician concerned by their richness. They are seen as a delicacy in Finland and in Latvia (where lamprey is routinely sold in supermarkets), larger lampreys are still a highly prized delicacy.
The mucus and serum of several lamprey species, including the Caspian lamprey, river lampreys and sea lamprey are known to be toxic, and require thorough cleaning before cooking and consumption.
In Britain, lampreys are commonly used as bait, normally as dead bait. Northern pike, perch, and chub all can be caught on lampreys.

*If you enjoyed the video, consider sharing it! The MMM-GRILL works awesome, perfect for backyard grilling:* www.shop.mmm-usa.com/grills
If you dry rub them in salt the slime will come off like a slug being salted
How did the whole ticket thing go for you. You plead guilty and pay it?
Cus thanks to all the out of towners that come to PH theyr gonna close the river acess again so people who live and pay taxes here cant use the river unless we take a similar course.
I love your vids. You remind me of trips me and my dad use to have back when I was a kid. He was really into off the grid living as well.
Did you think of skinning it before cooking. Many do snake that way.
If someone doesnt like heavy fish smell or generally fish smell you can always dump the fish into something with acid for a while e.g. lots of lemon juice or a mixture of vitamin c powder and water etc - because the origin of fishy smell is Thrimethylamine which is basic & the acid breaks it down :P
What great info! Thanks for sharing!!
@@trailtrashoutdoors8173 you are welcome :) Acid is also a trick for fish bones by the way. In case you don’t know: 1) filleting a e.g. trout 2) cupping (every 3-5 mm) the filets at the thicker part where the Y bones are 3) put something with acid on it & let it sit for a while. - then just season it & if everything worked out you should be able to eat the filet without caring about the bones anymore aka you shouldn’t even notice them. - Should work with any fish but depending on the bone size in the filet the time to let the acid sit varies.
Ceviche
Yess. Great tidbit of info!
@@GAFO777 - Thanks. I am one of those who can't stand the 'fishy smell' so I rarely eat fish. Mercury content is another consideration. But with the information you have shared I am more open to the idea. Although the 'fishy smell' left in the house would still have to be dealt with. Makes me want to retch.
You clearly went to some sort of a class in order to learn how to crack eggs so perfectly.
😂😂
I agree haha
Why didn’t you wash it off beforehand?!!!! And why did you eat the slime?!!🤢🤢🤢
Lamprey is pretty good, you just have to use salt on your hands and wipe down the lamprey and bleed it first. This will take off the mucus coat or slime, and get rid of the fishy taste. After that you should definitely gut it, it’s really good depending on how you clean it
my grandfather used to bring a few back from the lakes its not bad try it on a sandwich or with cheese and crackers kinda reminds me of sardines
Yes, they are good.
Could you give me a step by step instructions to cook and clean?
"you can actually eat the whole thing" . like that makes it more enticing. lol
Got me there :)
I would love to try lamprey. Without the spices *that's the ugh for me*
Hahahaha love it
@@vixis i agree but how much spice? there comes a point where you think whats the point of eating lamprey? all i can taste is spice. come to think of it, this may be a wooded beardsman woodobo selling ploy.
LOL - your egg cracking and emptying skills need practice :D
Egg cracking + filming duo skills LOL
Love the videos. But damn that egg cracking was hard to watch lol
I think he needs a field tripod lol
@@TheWoodedBeardsman hey bud if the egg you used is from your own chicken you need to check what you're feeding them. The shell breaking like that has a lot to do with their diet. It cracked way to much.
I’d probably scrub the slime off with salt, brine it in vinegar then braise it in booze...🐸
I really enjoyed this. Historically lampreys were eaten and valued, considered to be a delicacy. As with all foods there are ways to prepare them that make the most of what you have to start with. Seeing bloated white fuzzy five foot long spawned out dead ones in the stream I fished for brook trout in New Brunswick did not encourage me to try eating them but I am glad you did.Thank you.
almost dropped a thumbs down for the "egg crackin'" performance.
It was so uncomfortable and dissatisfying 😂😂😂
I think this is the first time a Wooded Beardsman video has made me wanna gag, and I've been around for a while
Made me wanna too lol
I learn a lot from your videos and later I use these skills when am trekking solo in the wild. Thanks a lot
The slime on fish can be removed using sand, regular soil or even snow. This will remove quite a bit of the fishy taste, or at least I think it does on catfish, Carp and Buffalo. Good video Chris.
And the Mature st man there said yep very edible, the more years you practice being hungry the better most food tastes.
So this needs a do-over! I bet Jeremy would like it, he can't taste anything :)
@@TheWoodedBeardsman He probably would not forget to cut around the exit hole either. LMBO He really seems to spend a lot of time doing that.... ;)
And just FYI you can wash the slime off with water and a dishcloth but DONOT LET THE WIFE SEE YOU DOING IT IN HER SINK!
You are welcome. ;)
I watch some Japanese cooking channels, and they deal with slimy seafood by basically rubbing it in salt. The salt essentially draws moisture away and helps you get the slime off. Which is a source of the fishy/smell flavour. And apparently using the salt to draw some moisture out of the flesh also helps get rid of the smell and fishiness. You do end up using a fair bit of salt doing this though.
I don't know if you're ever keen to eat lamprey again, but it might be worth a shot in the future.
Yes, vinegar also helps after you clean it with salt, specialy if your cooking catfish. The fishy smell will be gone and also the slime
OK 55 seconds to be notified... Dude you're officially back on top, lol well in my opinion anyway.
You are a brave soul, watching that slime pour off was making me gag... I think I might be a bit like Kevin lol.
Don't blame you, this was a tough one!
Where'd you learn to crack an egg? 😂 😂 😂
Seeing you crack those eggs hurt my soul.
Well now that’s the first time I’ve seen a lamprey cooked and eaten. I’ve read a few articles on the problems facing the Great Lakes due to invasive buggers. The thing always reminds me of the X-files episode featuring a humanoid lamprey. Cheers dude.🤙😎
Many people in rural Quebec eat lampreys. In my post I talk about having lamprey pie when growing up. I still make it when I have the chance
@@zekemedia1310
You made me real hungry just now.
@@DinnerForkTongue lol
Lamprey are freaky! Like the movie dream catcher. Dude! That pallet work in the green house is mean!nice grill my bro! I’m getting one! This is awesome.🐸🍺🤙🔥
Native American tribes along the Columbia River in the US smoke lampreys, maybe you should have tried that, after all they found a way to use those nasty little things that doesn't look too awful
NO bones, cartilage. Prehistoric animal that predates dinosaurs.
That looks delicious! If I ever caught a Lamprey I'd definitely try this.
We also eat lampreys. They are absolutely excellent when smoked or cooked over coals and then put to a sauce of vinegar. The blood must be washed away before preparing. Good job Beardsman
Man I’ve seen you eat you eat some crazy stuff but that nasty fish made me gag watching this 😂😂😂😂
ha ha Kevins reaction was so funny I would have thought it would taste like eel
You should have washed it in saltwater first I have some native friends who Target lamprey and smoking them is the best. love the videos
Of all the wild food you've eaten, this video was the grossest one.
Not necessarily the grossest food, just too much slime at the beginning for it to redeem itself lol
On the next segment of using food to mess with Kevin...🤣🤣🤣
At 2:52 House enjoying from plastik... Getting snow from Indonesia.. I like conten... I'm subscriber new, but So good
*Hello friends, good video,* *interesting channel. See how my* *dogs and rabbits live in the winter* *in -40, in such a cold I go fishing* *and hunting*
you should have used a landing net for a fish like that and not thrown it even if you were gonna kill it
Gosh i hate these things so much. Disgusting! I don't say this loosely...
delicacy for some, but normal food for some people
*Hello friends, good video,* *interesting channel. See how my* *dogs and rabbits live in the winter* *in -40, in such a cold I go fishing* *and hunting*

From to Vietnam 😆
I live in northern Sweden, It is still -11c, and the sun came out yesterday for 2 hours. It was bliss and I can definitely relate to you!
In Portugal its vrry common to eat lamprey. U should look for some portugueses recipes, they are simple, we use everything, we eat everything and in a delicious way ahahah love ur videos man!!
I was looking for Portuguese recipes when I found this video, so if you could recommend any specific videos on how it's cooked, I'd love to see some. The RUclips search has been failing me.
Even with it cooked. Your reaction really didn't make me want to try it. I love your videos Chris.
When the dog doesn't even want it :'(
Nope no more appetite. Eel maybe but not that creature. 🤮
I’ve never seen an egg cracked so horribly
"We're gonna eat that??
- Yeah"
Lmao trying woodobo on everything
Those were the worst egg cracks I've ever seen 😂👌
Interesting. I wonder if these could be a sustainable substitute for unagi?
Very likely, yes. Lamprey is not that different from eel, so long as you de-slime and bleed it.
Nmstay🙏 wooded beardsman love ❤️from india
I need to watch this vid any time I find myself wanting an unhealthy snack😂
I'm with you on that!
I've been wanting to drill holes in my crappy tire grill for awhile. The mmm grill idea is awesome.
The grill is amazing, super well built.
Consider using avocado oil or peanut oil when you're cooking at high temps. The smoke point on olive oil is pretty low and you're going to be consuming a lot of carcinogens if you use it to fry like that
I like using butter with some bacon grease when pan frying fish
I believe using tallow’s the healthiest way to cook high temp.
Lard is the best, I know plenty of people think that is bad. But those are people who have never used it. The 102 year old farmer who turned me onto it 35 years ago is still alive. Of course he was younger back then.
What you said about olive oil is absolute bullcrap. The smoke point has nothing to do with the oil breaking down and becoming toxic, that is only an issue when oils are repeatedly reheated and reused at high temps, as in bad fast food places. Olive oil has been proven by research to be the most stable and safest oil to consume at high temps, while it also retains its antioxidants compared to other inferior oils. The only down side is it imparts a heavier taste on the food youre frying, so it can become overpowering. Mediterranean nations use olive oil for everything, and they tend to be the longest living nations in Europe. That is reflected by their healthy dietary choices
Them Portuguese also love to eat Lampreys. The Willamette River in Oregon State has Lampreys in it.Check it out dog !!! ;)))))
In Japanese, lamprey is called yatsume unagi (八目鰻), or “eight eyed eel”. The most common preparation I’ve seen is called kabayaki (蒲焼), which is also how unagi is typically prepared in most Japanese restraurants. The fish is split down either the back or belly, gutted, and briefly steamed before being charred on a charcoal grill while being basted with a sweetened soy sauce-based glaze.
If its fishy... bleed it when you catch it. With the slime, trying rubbing the slime off with salt and a scorer. Then cook it the same way and see how it taste then. Do another video with it. I'm interest! We have nothing like that in Australia.
Oh those evil lamprey, they're the ticks of the waterways! Kevin grabbed one of the fattest pieces haha, at least he tried it though. God bless
I didn’t like Jeremy at first, I listened to all and I do have respect for him. You both are badass dudes!
Thank you for doing what you do. I have been binge watching all your videos and your friends. As a disabled person you have motivated me to try and become more outdoors person. Thank you and maybe one day if I make it to great white North we can go camping and you can teach me stuff.
Good morning from Melville Saskatchewan have a blessed day I luv your sense of adventure with the lamprey don’t know if I could that
When people say "it's a delicacy", it usually means it is something nasty and poor people's food xD
Keren
What would you do if a hungry aggressive wolf smells the lamprey you're cooking? Would you fight it or give it your lamprey?
That might be one of the only things I wouldn’t eat they are like aliens
I love fish, all fish but I think I'd be spitting it out and cleaning my mouth out with a snow sorbet too like Kevin! Don is crazy in a cool way!
Great video!
Lampreys are pretty common delicacy in western Finland. You can get them fried at the market like hotdogs.
And oh btw: i think their slime is toxic and they should be washed.
And the creepiest fish in the world goes to.... lamprey!! 👏👏👏
Even if you don't catch jack schit, you'll catch some fresh air.The great outdoor just can't be beat man !
Fun fact: King Henry The first died from eating too many sea lampreys.
Hahahahaha That was Soooo Funny and Awesomeness.......What a Weird Creature hahaha
How slimy is it compared to Eels? Eels are wicked slimy but so easy to clean n skin. And taste so yummy.
lol
I'm with Kevin on this one. Deep fried slime is not conducive to building a sugar shack. Interesting video though.
Confess that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart the God raised him from the dead, and you will be saved..you will receive the Holy Spirit
Repent of your sins. ("Repent" is Latin. It means "To Turn Away." Turn away from your sins, refuse to go back to who you once were.)
Be baptized. (Be completely submerged under water)
And the Holy Spirit will gift you.
JESUS CHRIST LOVES YOU
God bless you
It was great seeing you guys in my neck of the woods! A lot of local fisherman got a kick out of your discussion with the police. Good on you guys for knowing your rights.
i'm no cook or fisherman but can't you remove the sliminess with salt? might need some garlic or ginger (some asian cultures use galangal thats from the ginger family) to stop over powering tastes/smells
I looked up where you dip them in boiling water and take them out for easier cleaning. 👍
👍 for fish slime bite! What's next on the weird wild stuff menu, lamprey sandpaper mouth sashimi?😁
Your one handed egg cracking skills need some help lol. As for the Lamprey....no thanks.
The salmon are still running by you??
We caught this in the spring, just didn't have time to give it a proper cook.
Aap yahi sab kar te ho kya
Great video! I've never seen anyone cook and eat lamprey. On slimy fish, like Monkey-face Prickleback eels (it's actually a fish), try pouring hot water on the skin. The slime will clump up and you can scrape it off. On a scale of Survival Meat/Game, how does a lamprey rate? I've seen you eat tree "jerky", minnows, rabbit brains/organs, skunks, raccoons, coyotes, and now, lamprey. How does it rank? Full stop
You won’t 🤣🤣 omg you did 🤮 I’m from NYC and this is the first time I’ve ever heard of a lamprey, no offense at all, but I’d never. I love how adventurous yous are! I knew Kevin wouldn’t eat it. 🤣🤣 Let’s eat octopus instead. I’m a straight city slicker mama, but I absolutely love watching you and Kevin’s channels. Very educational and funny! Great vlog, thanks for posting.
"its just straight up slime boys, straight up slime" that part killed me XD
"Ehh, I'll try it. What the hell..." hahaha That guy is a-okay in my book! 👌🏻😂😊
The Sorted Food youtube channel just did a guess where this holiday food is from video, and one of the foods was a desert made of almond paste shapped into a lamprey and surrounded by sweet egg yolk strands (no actual fish involved). They said it was from Portugal and that lamprey were important there, so I went searching for Portuguese lamprey recipes, and found this video. I guess I need to try the search again in Portuguese.
Chris (please excuse the familiarity, I'm aware of etiquette but I am an American).
As one that watches your videoed adventures and appreciates your sense of humor, I'd like to tell you about these blood-sucking parasites that infest much of America. Strangely enough it's rumoured that they taste like beaver, but they smell fishy. They are commonly known as "barflies". And another curious thing about them is that they prefer to suck the blood from a particular area.
I, personally, have not tried them so you may decide to disregard this comment as I can only give you second-hand info.
Keep on surviving and laughing. Blessings to you and your family and Jeremy.
Awesome video! 've always wondered if Lamprey were edible!
OMG I can't believe you were outside in 2021 spreading COVID!!!!!
Crazy looking fish ! I'm very disappointed ,I was expecting u to eat it raw 😂😂u let the side down woodbeard lol! Don/Dom saved the day💯,I get a giggle outta Kevin's food tests 👍
😁😁😁👍👍👍Next time clean it using saalt/ash.......... Works on most of slimy fish 🐠
I think I would draw the line at lampry...although wouldn't turn down at least trying it once
also when doing lamprey you have to boil it for a min to get the slime off, then peal it. then you can coat it how ever you want. you would be set.
Those things are so protected over here in germany !!!!
its so crazy and they dont get half as big over here , and i also was told it tastes disgusting
I'm not even halfway through. Maybe I'll feel worse about the lamprey but man cracking those eggs made me cringe hard. Just do it off camera lol. I enjoy your videos though 😂😂😂
Throwing slimy fish into a bucket with a little but of lemon juice or vinegar works wonders in removing slime before gutting & Cleaning. But damn that's not a fish. That's just nasty
Lamprey is a delicacy when well prepared.
Keep the blood, skin, make a marinade with red wine and only then cook.
You can make stew (bordaleza) or mixed with broth rice
See Portuguese recipes ...
if you have trouble with egg shells, you can always run the eggs through a strainer after you whisk them.
Hey bud, Just a small tip; olive oil is bad for cooking over a fire. It smokes/ burns at a relatively low temperature. Use vegetable oil, or canola (cheaper than avocado or Peanut oil) or something with a high smoke point for frying or cooking on a fire.
Edit: You can mix oils/ fats together to raise the smoke point of the more volatile oil. like adding butter to olive oil will raise butters smoke point... adding saved bacon grease to oil is my favorite flavour enhancer.
You should try the SurStromming from Denmark.... yummy yummy!
Why not just take the parasite off and throw the fish back in? Poor guy probably would feel so much relief and he’s probably not the healthiest or most nutrient-packed fish to eat anyway, considering a blood-sucking parasite has been feasting on him for God knows how long.
Lamprey is a rich man's food where I'm from traditionally . It's one of my favorite foods . If you want you can also cook it unagi style but what ever you do make sure the grease drips off
Bro I lik ur vedios but , seeng u eating this parasite is 🤮 how ur women respond to this yaak thing
You know what? I am pretty much game for anything meat but I just don't think I could do this one. Greetings from Oshawa Ontario. Thank for posting.
