  • Just three short months after her perpetrator was sentenced to serve up to 15 years, a Utah woman learned the parole board had decided to grant his release without hearing from his multiple victims. That changed this week.

It shouldn't have taken the victims speaking out to stop his release. His crimes should have been enough to keep him locked up.

Why does the parole board get to override sentences in the first place? It feels like a miscarriage of justice. Thank you KSL for bringing awareness to this issue. The victims of these crimes do not deserve to be revictimized over and over again.

The board didnt override anything. Utah uses indeterminate sentencing for prison. A person is sentenced by a judge to an indeterminate range of time, in this case, it was a minimum of 0 to a maximum of 15 years. The board of pardons then determines how much of that range a person serves. So, here, it looks like the board almost decided to have him serve closer to the minimum before rescinding that decision.

The whole Utah parole board system should be renamed the "Victim Re-Victimisation Process." When victims can't rely on justice being done unless they repeatedly re-live their trauma in front of strangers, it starts to look like performative justice. What happens to victims who are not particularly articulate or relatable? Do they get the same level of justice that a victim who can articulate her emotional damage and ongoing fears get, even if the less relatable victim feels the same things?

He was sentenced up to 15 years, and 3 months after his sentencing the parole board decided to release him in one year.
Sentenced in October 2023 to ZERO to 15 years.
    Parole hearing date: 01/02/24
    Parole decision date: 01/12/24
    Release early 2025.
    Background:
Johnson reported to police in Cache County in 2017 that Haderlie drugged and sexually assaulted her. Despite Johnson reporting to police quickly and undergoing a forensic exam at the hospital, North Park police inactivated their investigation into Haderlie multiple times.
Detectives didn't attempt to contact Haderlie to ask him about Johnson's report until more than a year later, after a 16-year-old girl reported to police in a different county that Haderlie drugged and attempted to sexually assault her too.
Haderlie was sentenced in the case involving the teen in 2019. Then, in October last year, he was sentenced to zero to 15 years for lesser charges he pleaded guilty to in the case involving Johnson.
The police department needs to be held accountable. Shoddy work is never addressed.
The parole board needs to be identified. Who would let someone out after 1 yr with two victims?
