Bjüræ I have heard his song, “Opinion” where he describes it funny with an interview beforehand. Wish Courtney would release more old recordings from him. Too, bad, though.
A lot of In Utero's songs were written before 1993 or even during Nevermind's era, the only songs that may have been composed on 1993 are Heart Shaped Box and Milk It, rest on them were composed earlier. For example, All Apologies's first demo was played in 01/01/1991 along with an instrumental of Radio Friendly (which means both song were composed on 1990), Rape Me was written during Nevermind's production and Dumb and Pennyroyal Tea were written on 1990 too.
@Eme XII Just to clarify, I am not saying that Serve the Servants or others songs weren't written before or during Nevermind's era. Just that those particular two songs, may have been the only that were written and composed on 1993. The rest, are most likely that were written during 1990 - 1992.
@Eme XII Earliest demos of Serve the Servants and Very Ape are most likely from 1992, same as Frances Farmer, which in fact may or may not have been composed on 1991, we know that Tourette's was composed on 1992. So that just leave Milk It and Heart Shaped Box as the only songs that were composed on 1993, I would dare, tbh to say that Heart Shaped Box was composed on 1992, tho. Milk It, I am sure that it was a semi random jam that turns out to be an okay song during the Brazil's studio session, like, come on, it has the same style as Moist Vagina and Gallon of whatever Alcohol Rubbing down some shit.
JD 5 13 I believe they played RFUS at the Off Ramp Cafe, which was in 1990. There's only a few seconds of the beginning of it that's been recorded as far as I know. Either way, that does go to show that it's been around for quite a while before being on an album.
Kurt pretty much wrote all of his songs in like 2 or 3 years 1989-1991. It's hard to know how long the writing process began before 1989 since you can't find many recordings, him being so young. He could have been working on a lot of different parts of each song when he was in his early teens up in his room for all we know.
If you listen to the extras on the MTV unplugged performance Kurt himself mentions not wanting to play polly and dumb back to back because they're "the same song", and he does anyway and mentions that it's a tv show and it will be edited differently. It wasn't - but I'm not sure if it mattered
funny to see how kurt evolution in some songs was to get sad and others happy or more energetic like sad/sappy being bipolar was a great thing in his songwriting i guess srry for bad english not native speaker
i think like the song "and i love her"(which was way more "sad" than the beatles version which brings the real emotion of love which can be happy and awesome and sometimes just suck ass and sad) this version seems better and more true than the version on the in utero album cause it brings hapinnes and sadness cause the song is sad and happy and makes more sense cause being "ignorant" its sad and happy at the same time i think kinda, i really think this song portrays ignorance

Kurts style was based entirely around power chords which are neither Major or Minor they are somewhere in between , when the 3rd is removed , and it is a great sound , though here in places it sounds like he is hitting 7ths (in places) which gives the song a nice touch
Because he plays power chords with 2 fingers, he often slightly touches additional tone on upper scale. For example, sometimes he plays G5 like that -> 3 5 5 5 x x. This way he include 4th of upper scale. So, the chord became Gsus4. Probably at the beginning he do that unintentionally, but later he find it sound pretty good :)
Old age, dumb, and other songs all mixed into one. Unreal. Shows his process of how he had all of these ideas and then slowly crafted them each into their own masterpiece song. Brilliant
I could go on and on about how much I love this acoustic version of 'Dumb', but I want to take a sec to appreciate this photo choice. Worn-in front porch, Kurt sitting casually, and an open chair next to him inviting the viewer to take a seat. That, paired with the warmth of this song, creates a welcoming little moment. I feel agonizing loneliness everyday, but something about this song and photo makes me feel less so.💙
Anytime i think negatively about the internet, i have this to remind me of how wonderful it can actually be. Without it, most of us would have never heard this

Oh Kurt I was 13 when I saw you live and I can't believe I passed the 40 years old now. When I listen to this it's as if you're in my room with me. I miss you so much. If you could see what music became nowadays, no more soul, no more passion (or just for $$$), no more music deserving using that word. Even the good radios broadcasting nice things in the '90s became commercial af, so much that they became silent to me. I wish I could believe in God, I try but I can't. If I was one of His worshipers I would believe in Heaven and in the possibility to see you again after this life. Wherever you are, I think I'm dumb, or maybe just happy for having had, at least, the chance to see you once live. If ghosts exist please come and haunt me!

Yep, I think I'm dumb as well. Probably one of my top 5 Nirvana's song. This version in particular has something that makes it addicting af, can't stop listening to it.
Him and John Lennon had the ability to make it look so easy. Grunt into a tape recorder and have it come out as the catchiest thing you ever heard. Those 2 were wired different.
I like that it is, at the same time, more dissonant yet also more pop than the album version. Also just to comment one thing I always liked about Nirvana is that they had so many songs composed years before they were officially released that they used to play live and record as demos. I confess during my teens when I believed I would be a musician (a fucking rockstar, let’s be honest) it gave me hope and incentive to just keep creating no matter if it was basically a one-man effort.
You look at the sky, the darkness of the night surrounds you... Sun, moon have gone. But next to it there is only a light that shines, public lighting while with a guitar, drunk, drugged, sober, tired I don't know. You just feel like you're in the right place despite what happens in your life That to me is this song.
Fun Fact: The guitar he uses on this record is the same as Polly's, and Kurt once said in an interview that he had just bought it from a pawn shop, back in the 1990s.
this song takes me back... I used to skip school and not do any work because i hated school and life so much, I would go home and my dad would get so mad (reasonably so) because i never completed and work and I was going to fail the grade, of course I would always argue back because i don't know when to shut up, which just created more tension for the situation to turn into a vicious cycle for years and years, and i had become depressed. on this particular day I've had enough, while outside in my backyard to walk my dog i walked over to my fence planning to jump the fence and run away. I remember everything about that day the clothes i was wearing, the coldness of the winter air, and the feeling of the old wooden fence on my hand, everything was dull and seemed to be in shades of gray. for some reason this part 1:14 really reminds me of that day...
This is like the Beatles..when you thought you've seen every photo...a new one pops up. He sounds live just as he did on records. No altering his voice by engineers like some singers..

He's humming the parts on the chorus that became the cello parts on In Utero. Cool shit.
Or was it Chris that was humming?
Bjüræ if you listen closely there’s someone else humming
Bjüræ it doesn’t sound like that either, or else you would here the strumming for those notes
Yup good catch! He's humming a rudimentary version of those parts
Bjüræ I have heard his song, “Opinion” where he describes it funny with an interview beforehand. Wish Courtney would release more old recordings from him. Too, bad, though.
