- The Chinese GP sprint race for a while had a very different look about it: Lewis Hamilton led for Mercedes, chased by another F1 veteran - Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso. In P3, though, lurked Red Bull's Max Verstappen. In this video Peter Windsor describes what happened next - and why.

I remember looking at the gap between Lewis and Max, and it was like 1.8s. I grabbed my phone and sent my friend a message, then locked the screen and looked back at the TV. He was already glued to Hamilton. Then he passed. Then he was two seconds ahead. Then he disappeared. Incredible.
Lewis had a big fat lockup, that made it quite a bit easier for Max
And once perez got past the ferrari and alonso look how quickly he was closing on lewis

In the end business as usual. I liked this sprint race.

Lando Norris' reaction time was within one hundredth of a second to Hamilton's. That was not the issue. He got up to 200km/h slower than Hamilton and then Lando through lack of racecraft put himself out of contention for the win.
Lewis nearly always seems to get a good start. Particularly good reaction times? The car has really good traction? or the engine has a lot of low end grunt?
Peter, please consider posting your great reviews in the form of podcasts as well.
I'm sure I won't be the only one who would appreciate.
I simply enjoy podcasts during walks or drives.
And not always want to look at screens.
Thanks for considering.

what not many people saw or understand is how max pulled away from lewis after he just went by him. you can see it on the onboard camera. in the crossing point max took a different line then lewis and just when lewis wanted to speedup again having a better exit. max broke that line by crossing over. therefor for a split second lewis had to break while max gained speed and directly took 0.700 time from lewis. i do not know if done on purpose but it was beautiful to see.
Lewis let him past What's the point in him fighting a car that's that fast. He was always racing for p2.
@@rampageashton max in the beginning had setup problems. that is why he switched to mode 8. so lewis thought i have a chance to win if i can keep alonso behind. but the moment max settings worked and he got past alonso, lewis mind went into the shadow realm and made a breaking error, because of the pressure. then max went by him and again denied lewis a victory. i do not know how many victories max has snatched from lewis the last couple of years, but you can clearly see it is affecting lewis his mind. look at qualify later. P18. even in that car, lewis would not have to ended at P18. is the car of max good. yes it is. it is incredible. but what max is doing with the car no one can do. specially not lewis since he prefers understeer instead of oversteer. goodluck in beating that!
@@elecovanrenss1352Max should win every time in the RedBull. It’s a masterful machine. It’s a more than a second a lap faster than any other car in clean air. Do you think Max wins in the Merc? Not a chance. I like Max he’s a great driver but Lewis let him past today plain and simple it was pointless fighting. If you think he fought him your tripping he could have kept the inside line and held him for a lap maybe but that would damage Lewis’ race for no benefit as the RedBull is too strong he had ten laps left. At the chequered flag go forward two more laps and Checcos past Lewis no issue and in the race tomorrow they are 30 seconds upfront. No danger.
Stop fanboying it’s boring. At no point did I slag max off you lot are mental.
@@rampageashton If that's the case, that same logic should be applied to when Lewis was in w10 and w11 and the funny this is that the performance gap was even bigger. Max and Redbull seem to optimize their dominant machinery better than Lewis and Merc did over a season.
@@cxt5278 I don’t disagree with that at all. Redbull are smashing it. Well deserved. Perspective is needed though.
Dear Peter, it almost feels like an honor to listen to your reviews. I am an F1 fan since ages, but all your posts make me feel humble. Very insightful, really!
People keep saying Norris lost grip and ran wide, but what I saw was Lewis implementing his signature move of edging wide to force his opponent off the track. I'm not saying he broke the rules - although others who force people wide are often criticised - but that is a move he's done many many times through his career.
*EDIT* having watched it back I see it WAS Lando losing grip that took him off. Had that not happened he would have been in a good position going into turn 2, so I think he was right to go on the outside and just got unlucky with grip.
That's what I thought too, but actually, Lewis gave Lando enough space on the outside, but Lando lost grip. In this case it was not Lewis's fault.
@@yogishnn1945 just watched it again and you're right enough, it was Lando losing it that took him off. Given that's the case, had his tyres not slipped and he held his position he had a good chance of taking the place back in turn 2. I think he was right to do what he did and just got unlucky with the grip.
Weird isnt it losing grip on the dirty side of the track lol we all know if this was reversed and lulu got run wide he would complain and moan till norris gets a penalty for dangeorus driving

@@daveruda Dumbest saying ever
In stead of being all in awe of the sainz boy, he basically tore his tyres apart within two laps. Very intelligent. You could’ve mentioned Max obliterating all false hopes with a 13 second gap at the chequered flag of a 19 lap race…..#keeppushing
Great analysis. ❤
Sir Windsor. Delivering the goods. As usual
Do you not think DRS kept Sainz within striking distance of Fernando? Sainz lost out in sector 2 I think against him and DRS got him back into it on the straight. So DRS definitely helped I would say
Brilliant analysis
Thanks
The incident between Leclerc and Sainz was noted by the stewards.
No surprises here with Max and the RB20. Then drives off into the distance once he takes the lead. Sergio also made a brilliant pass for third place.

But the main question is: Why is there always a random guy standing with the drivers on the podium??
They are usually the winning Constructor's representative.
Pete Windsor needs his own show on Sky Sports 1. He is the goat !
One of the drivers in the post-sprint interviews commented that the track surface was terrible. I haven’t heard much about that this year. Has anyone else heard those comments? Or is that just hard feelings after the race?
everybody has said that the track surface at the china GP is terrible.
If your drivers start next to each other on the grid and you have two different tire strategies, all you’ve guaranteed is one to be wrong
I would love to see Lewis in the w11 and Max in the rb 19/20 on the same racetrack .
Peter please raise your volume! I doubt I am the only fan of yours that has challenged hearing.
it was a great start from Lewis.
What do you think about the sprint qualifying being removed and bring back fp2. The sprint should be a reverse grid of the previous Grand Prix results offering more points then it does currently for p1-10. I think that would be highly entertaining to watch.
Lets go
Lewis looks a grade 2 kid at school photo day.
Carlos killed his tires in the first rounds trying to attack Max. He lost more there than gained. He couldn’t defend against Checo and Charles. Not so smart
Gilles Villeneuve would have been proud of him

I don't think Lando ran out of grip - he ran out of track Peter, with Lewis doing a bit of good old fashion squeezing.
Lewis changed the setup for the racequaly and now he is p18 good job beter take the setup from the first driver
No comment on another RIDICULOUS penalty for Alonso?
Max is inevitable.
Would Redbull and Mercedes-Benz settle the discussion?
I'd be surprised if a weekend of Lewis vs Max wouldn't yield huge returns.
Format testing in Mercedes-Benz. Then tested in RedBulls. Then a short race Max in a merc vs Lewis in a Red Bull.
Then try all the possible variables.
I'd be surprised if Formula 1 didn't recover some fans.

Some don't like the sprint races, some love them, it's 50-50 as far as I can tell. At least something is happening, still, miles and miles better than the 2016 qualifications when the FIA came up with that hare-brained idea of eliminating the slowest driver every 90 seconds until the qualifying segment ended.
Seem like by your voice you just woke up Peter, anyways thanks for the sprint analysis spot on as usual 👌
It is hilarious that Lewis's fans think this was a fantastic performance from the goat. It was indeed a fantastic qualifying by Lewis, undoubtedly. If you really look at the race, it was the amazing driving skills of the Lion Alonso, who managed to keep much faster cars behind him and destroy their tyres. Lewis didn't have to do anything as Alonso was keeping the faster cars behind, including Max for a long time. I can't help laughing.

China has had a issue with its drs for quite a while , the cars can't get close enough on the banking and by the time they get to the drs zone it's too late
Alonso didn't even fight MadMax for position??
So long Hamilton!!
I don't think staying on the outside of the corner at all cost was a smart decision from Lando, he threw away the chance for a podium in turn one of the race.
Catch a cold?
Even Verstappen is sounding bored - in a sprint race starting 4th he still finishes over 13 seconds ahead and the result wasn't even unexpected. If it is going to continue in this vein Verstappen is going to start taking a book with him to read.
Oh he is not. And he's not sounding bored at all. I think you would do better with some self-reflection.
He “ran wide” ……Come on Peter... I know you love Lewis and all but he pushed him clean off the track, and he was initial to take that line but a bit more honest review on Lewis would make for a much balanced review.
