    There's another important thing about all Sennheiser MKH microphones. It's their operating principle. Sennheiser being a German company, the MKH stands for Mikrofon Kondensator Hochfrequenz. They're RF condenser microphones. They don't have a DC polarisation voltage applied to their capsules as in almost all other condenser microphones but their capsules are the capacitor in the LC circuit of an RF oscillator.
    Without wanting to go any further into the principle - there are lots of articles online describing how they work - here's the big advantage: the voltage across the capsule is much lower. Only a few volts. This makes them far less troublesome in places with low temps and/or high humidity. I've had Rode NT-5 give up with a loud bang on a beach in the North of France caused by arcing across the capsule in sub-zero temps. This will never happen with a MKH microphone.
    You could take them into a Turkish bath and they'd still work. Don't try this with any other type.

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  9 месяцев назад

      I fully agree! They’re very impressive, and what’s more, it’s an older technology.
      I would still feel less than comfortable taking an MKH-50 out in the rain. Haha. The 416 can handle anything though.
      Thanks for this great comment! I really look forward to these types of posts. Cheers!

    Now you've done it. You've thrown the gauntlet down; raised the bar. Now every self-respecting RUclips audio pro must preface their gear reviews with a feature film-quality clip just to stay competitive. But who among them all would have a wife like yours with skilled acting chops, or the attention to detail to place a slow-dialing rotary phone to heighten the tension? Not to mention having an NKH50 to borrow! Seriously, gear reviews are not supposed to be this entertaining. Or as beautifully executed. You rock.

    Wow the 416 has such an apparent introduction of room noise when compared to the 50. The EQ match helped but still had it there. The 416 profile on the MKH50 sounded good, but its hard to hide that noise.

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  27 дней назад

      The 416 is meant for outdoors. Due to the interference tube, phasing might occur when sounds bounce around the room and into the mic from the side at the same time as the end. This might be what you’re referring to.

    Like you I have also been wanting the MKH-50. Not only does it sound great but the self noise is pretty low at 12db. The less work I need to do in post as far as noise removal goes, the better. I was really hoping to hear the noise floor a bit when you compared the mics but all I could hear was the brief opening of gate and what sounded like a computer fan in the background. :-) Thanks for the overview and great job on the EQ work. Looking forward to future videos...
    Cheers,
    Greg

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  5 месяцев назад +1

      Oh. My apologies. I never use a gate. Perhaps it was just the way I edited the clips? The comparison part was pure raw mics with a limiter on the master just in case I peaked. I did use a little bit of C-Suite C-Vox noise suppression on the opening part because the street outside was lively. I also used a high pass and likely a limiter for that part. The rest is raw.
      I should’ve compared the noise. My apologies!
      But I’m glad you liked it!

    Love everything about this video. I think EQ matching is a great way to hear the true character of a microphone. I think that 50 kind of softens the sibilance a little bit, something about internal reflection, or different acoustic properties of the capsules and their surroundings. the sound of the 416 Reminds me of the acoustic presence boost you can get in some microphones that have an acoustic presence boost filter.

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  9 месяцев назад

      Hey thanks! I love trying to EQ match. When I was young and poor, I could never afford the expensive mics, but I always tried to figure out a way to make cheap mics sound a little more like the big guys. Haha.
      And yes. The 416 has that sharp edge on the top. It was originally designed to punch through on tape - which had a roll off on the highs.
      Thanks for watching!

    This is a video I've been waiting for. I have not heard a direct comparison of the Oktava and MKH50 before. The fact that the Oktava (as good as it is) can be emulated close to an MKH50 is very encouraging, but Fabfilter is out of my price range. This is another great video, and I love the skit at the beginning. The set design of the night stand area is fantastic. I have a phone from the 70's like that for a prop as well, and also another from 1940. Yes, I love to go to flea markets for such findings. They bring such a "feel" to scenes. Testing and comparing mics in a quiet room is not a challenging situation. You have to get out in the real world and deal with unwanted noise.
    Schoeps are better. I tried one. A lot of location recorders and classical music engineers are using DPA. These are double the cost. And there is the Sennheiser 80 series. Another step up from the MKH series. My MKH50 is a keeper and does the job well with no complaints. Money well spent.
    Disagree with the statement about not being made for music. These are great for live music production and recording. Especially classical acoustic instruments. Feedback resistant and good isolation. Super quiet in the studio.

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  4 месяца назад

      Hey. Thanks for the comment. Of course, as I’ve said in many of my videos, anything can be used for anything to achieve anything. It’s all about what works for you. Of course the MKH-50 can be used for music. Any mic can. But I feel like someone isn’t going to go out and spend $1300 on an MKH-50 to record music.
      Schoeps are certainly way more popular with sound recordists. You’re right. And they’ve got an amazing sound. I agree with you.
      As far as environment, you have a point, though this mic is primarily chosen for indoor booming. Generally film sets are relatively quiet in such situations. But, once again, as I always say in my videos, what do I know? I’m just some guy.

I do hear the reverb in my vids from the 416 but most people don’t hear or care because the quality still excels above most. Now I’m debating buying one and selling my 416 or keep both. I’m not booming outdoors and instead using wireless lav. I do like how small the 50 is and easy to get out of frame. Keep up the good work.

As a single person podcaster I always seem to want to buy everything especially microphones like this, but I keep telling myself, do you really need it? Hahaha! I know the feeling! I also collect mics nonstop. It’s called GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) and it’s real!
      Let me help you: as a podcaster, the greater masses that listen to you would never tell the difference between mics. They only know when something sounds bad. Not even when something sounds good (when it’s good, they don’t notice). So if you’re using a 50 or a 416 or a C-414 or a U87, they’ll never know it. Only you and a very select few fellow GAS guys. @@xavierstapleton9780 haha. No I don’t think so. They’re tailor made to the mic hosting the EQ curve.
      Luckily, I use a scientifically measured method of matching the mics, and I record all of my positions in order to do it. So I would only need to get ahold of the 4053b for an evening to match it to the 50 or any other mic I may have.
      Keep in mind that while the EQ curve can get close, it can never replace the sound of the mic being emulated. This is due to the differences in polar patterns, capsules, subtle compressions and distortions, etc.

      Hey. Yes. You’re right. It’s not that expensive when you consider it’s also a lifetime mic. You’ll have it forever.
      You can contact Line Audio and ask them if they ship to Malaysia. My hunch is that they do.
      The 440 is very different to the CM4 but you can generally do anything with anything and most won’t tell the difference.

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  3 месяца назад

      Honestly uou could use either without issue in that situation. The problem with a 416 indoors is the possibility of room reverb (bounce) coming into the interference tube and canceling out the spoken word. In a large open space, there shouldn’t be any issue with that.
      The 416 is great for rejecting sounds from the sides. The 50 is more of a supercardioid mic with less rejection. You could use a 50 outside and inside. But you might run into problems with a 416 inside if you haven’t treated your room properly (if it’s a small room).

    • @ChenProductionsCo
      @ChenProductionsCo 3 месяца назад +1
